One of Poland's most astounding musical collectives, Atman have spent nearly two decades quietly releasing tapes on their own FLY (Freak Living Yourself) Music label between conducting workshops in instrument building and forestry. As you might expect, Atman's "forest music"—created with Tibetan liturgical instruments and acoustic instruments such as guitar, dulcimer and indigenous lutes—is the most masterful swirling paleo-delic ethno-folk hybrid in existence. Tradition features guest vocalist and long time collaborator ANNA NACHER, joining the core members of the group MAREK STYCZYNSKI, MAREK LESZCZYNSKI, and PIOTR KOELCKI, all multi-instrumentalists bringing life to a range of implements (from Slovakian pastoral fujara to baby rattles and zithers). Atman have expanded even further to include THOMASZ RADZIUK (bass guitar), TOMEK GULINSKI (vocals, harmonium, hand drums) and many other guests throughout the 65 minutes. Tradition ranges from green-blood-culling, acoustic dulcimer forest magic to blinding moves through rock territory, most brilliantly illustrated on a cover of HENDRIX's "Third Stone From The Sun," all capped off by the wailing punctuation of Anna Nacher (who sounds like Liz Frazier and Patti Smith rolled into an Eastern European forest mother). Created as a swan song response to the dissolution of Galaxie 500, More Sad Hits was recorded with Galaxie producer Mark Kramer, and is just as cutting a reaction to the sinister allure of fame as it was when released back in 1992. The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship with Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own.Damon & Naomi originally released More Sad Hits on Shimmy Disc one year after the breakup of Galaxie 500, when Dean Wareham left the group to pursue a career with Luna on Elektra Records. With no intention of doing any more recording, the duo were nonetheless convinced to go into the studio after Kramer told them he'd assist with both recording and release. While Damon & Naomi have remained publicly silent regarding Wareham's recent autobiography, this album serves as all the answers anyone needs concerning their side of the drama. And with a shimmering and lonely beauty as only they can achieve, the two made a series of songs as emotionally stark as you're likely to hear. It was recently voted one of the "Top Twenty Most Overlooked Psychedelic Albums" along with Skip Spence and 13th Floor Elevators. This remastered reissue will contain new liner notes and photos. In advance of the release, Damon & Naomi will be touring the states for a serious of special shows with Masaki...

***A second collection of personally insightful and hi-larious songs from this overly-prolific, schizophrenic Chicago cult-fave compiled by his biggest fan, Jello Biafra. Culled from over 700 songs spread across Wesley's 30 self-released CDs it would appear there's plenty left for additional compilations. Scream, Dracula, scream, cuz there's liner notes by Biafra, and covers of songs by Duran Duran and Pure Prairie League. Could we get a little less vocals in the head monitors, please?

The long-awaited City Of Sorrows is Sandra Bell's first full-length release since 1995. From the musically fertile South Island of New Zealand, Sandra has previously recorded for Turbulence, IMD, and of course the legendary genre-defining Xpressway label. Recorded during a temporary relocation to Berlin, City Of Sorrows finds Sandra turning back toward the more austere and emotional style of her Xpressway debut, Dreams Of Falling. Her voice and guitar blend perfectly with cello, accordian, and on a couple of tracks, a full but rough-around-the-edges band featuring Nicholas Young, Bill Direen, Uli Glosauer, Lars Reinhardt and Ekki Solms. Sandra's lyrics and alternately deadpan and harrowing delivery accurately convey an atmosphere of dissolution and decay, creating an emotional landscape available to only a special few artists.

***This debut album is the latest in a long, highly enjoyable series of fucked up punk rock action from the kitty-tweaked brain of MICK COLLINS (Gories, Blacktop, Dirtbombs, etc.). Riding shotgun on Collins' newest rampage through the halls of sobriety and good manners are fellow window-smashing goons: TERRI WAHL of the RED AUNTS; DAN BROWN of ROYAL TRUX, '68 COMEBACK and JOHNNY HASH; and MARTY MOORE also of '68 Comeback and Johnny Hash. Do people ransack everything in sight just because? People do. Twelve hate-filled classics all louder, more bombastic and meaner than even Mick's usual but not ordinary lo-fi garage wail. Warped blues, wacked jungle rhythms and enough distorted guitar to pierce the brain of any listener caught without a helmet. Includes covers of tracks by Redd Kross, The Mad, and Francis Xavier Zappa.

Devil Between My Toes was the debut album by Guided By Voices, originally self-released by the group in February 1987 in an edition of 300 copies. Disillusioned by the lukewarm reception to the band’s debut EP the previous year, Robert Pollard resolved that this record would be conceived for an audience of one: “(it) is strictly for me and me only. Because no one’s going to buy it, no one gives a fuck, but I’m still gonna do it. So I might as well put only what I want on it, for me. An album for me.” Even amongst the 30-odd proper GBV albums, Devil Between My Toes remains unique, and not simply because it was the first to be released. Much like its out-of-focus cover photo of the mean rooster next door (Big Daddy), the album’s vibe is dark, minimalist, and mysterious. Most of the album was recorded as a trio, and it contains more instrumentals than any other GBV album, but like the best LPs in their catalog, the sequencing renders these tracks essential to the flow and mood of the LP. While there are the expected Brit Invasion hook-fests sprinkled throughout, we’re also treated to career highlights like the monolithic “A Portrait Destroyed by Fire” (Tobin Sprout’s first GBV appearance) and “Cyclops,” a track that would be right at home on Vampire On Titus had it been recorded more crudely.

This was the first live show of the songs from EVOL, at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas. The next day we would sputter through a set for New Music America in Houston, outdoors like a sideshow act on some sort of weird float, our music vanishing amongst the tall ugly bldgs downtown, in broad daylight. This night, however, things felt pretty good, despite borrowed amps+ drums (thanks to Furniture) and a set of (almost) all new songs-untried, stepping off the cliff. Our future soundman Terry Pearson was part owner of the Continental at the time, and he did the house sound for this and hundreds of other gigs there. The original cassette recording was made by Austin film-maker Bill Daniels; Wharton Tiers transferred it to digital.

The two powerful, stirring recordings on this EP represent a once in a lifetime collaboration documented live int he Rogue Lounge at Terrastock in Providence, Rhode Island during the spring of 1997. Performers included Dave Pearce from Flying Saucer Attack, Jason DiEmilio and Jason Knight from the Azusa Plane and Carl Hultgren from Windy & Carl with the brothers Gibbons from Bardo Pond joining in on the second track. Their efforts were entirely symbolic of the weekend's open attitude towards music and life. Lightning never strikes twice in the same place, and 'Providence' will remain a starkly eloquent statement proving just that. -Henry Owings 29Sep97
