As if to explain his gushing fountain of creativity, Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, has time and again paid tribute to both his inspirations and affections, ranging from Springsteen and Graham Nash all the way to R. Kelly and Mariah Carey. Hell, he’s gone so far as to cover himself. This time out, Oldham sticks with influences, rendering American country master Merle Haggard’s “Because of Your Eyes “ and British folk legend Roy Harper’s “I’ll See You Again” in respectful yet distinct efforts. As always, Oldham’s soulfully solemn voice comes to the fore in these spare arrangements. The bottom line is utter beauty.
