The Goddess Is Dancing by D.K.

The Goddess Is Dancing
Good Morning Tapes

“Arriving in the wake of Good Morning Tapes' prized vinyl editions from Jonnine (HTRK), XVARR, Anthony Naples, Tapes and more, ‘The Goddess Is Dancing’ is an extended trip that revolves around lilting, rhythmelodic percussion and aqueous atmospheres expressing D.K.’s imaginary interpretation of music used in Vietnamese ritual music. It unfolds as a ceremony in five parts honouring the mystical goddesses of Forest, Water and Heaven, with music both relaxing and energising in a way that’s intended to aid dancers’ transmogrification from human vessels into spirited beings. The results are some of D.K.’s lushest in a catalogue that now stretches back to 2014 and takes in mystic club music and sanguine home listening for everyone from Antinote to Melody As Truth and 12th Isle. In careful progression, the EP moves from the deliquescent shimmers and breathy choral synth spirits of ‘The Three Realms’ to the exquisitely poised dream motion of the title track and the hypnotic percolations of ‘Going Into Trance’ on the A-side, before stretching out on the B-side into slow, balmy elegance of ‘Forest Palace’, and ultimately dissolving any remaining tensions with the dematerialised, 12 minute design of ’Summoning The Spirits’. In a current field awash with new age ambient references and a searching sense of spirituality, D.K.’s offering is exceptional for the execution of its never cloying, timelessly enchanted appeal.”—Boomkat

“Warm hug introduction to Good Morning Tapes’ roving roster of worldly dub-pop-psych styles featuring exclusive tracks by Tapes, Anthony Naples, Kiki Kudo, Eszaid, INNSYTER, Eddie Ruscha…  Chasing up standout EPs by HTRK’s Jonnine Standish and UK synthesist, XVARR, the ’All Welcome’ 12” pairs three previously tape-only tracks with a trio of exclusives on a killer compilation from the promising French label. Supplying a varied and engaging experience ranging from Tapes’ classical Indian invocations to Eszaid’s gutted D&B and Kiki Kudo’s fizzy electro-dub, ‘All Welcome’ renders the label’s aesthetic wide open with a wonderfully shine-eyed appeal to mutual, empathetic ambient souls and lovers of electronic magick.  Tapes, aka South London enigma Jackson Bailey, coaxes the EP into action with the woozy title tune of his tape ’Silence Please’, meshing electronic tanpura drone with mysterious winds and tabla drums in a respectful tradition of English artists including Robert Wyatt and Shackleton, before Eddie Ruscha’s Only Thingz spies Eno via The Orb and Vangelis in the glyding synth pads and smeared brass tone of ‘All Eyes Open’, and Berlin-based Brazilian artist INNSYTER follows a deliciously groggy ambient hunch in ‘Morning Blend’. The label then play it closer to home with an eviscerated D&B dub by Eszaid, co-owner of the Paris-based Collapsing Market label, with ‘The Most Sacred Syllable’, and Anthony Naples takes it to NYC with an extended mix of his scudding piano house workout ‘Goodness’ off the ‘Take Me With You’ tape (not found on the LP released by ANS!),...

Written and produced by Jonnine Standish (HTRK) with additional production and mixing by Nathan Corbin. 'Super Natural' is Jonnine's first solo release.  "Jonnine’s songs swim in part-spoken, part-sung suspension, sophisticated wordplay amid languorous instruments and devotional invocations with allegorical weight. Imagined as a soundtrack to the surreal Venice-set feature film she and Zebrablood (Blazer Sound System / Psychic 9-5 Club) are destined to one day make together, it is a testament to eight years of friendship and musical / visual collaboration. Super Natural has a chimeric quality – fleeting and, like any good thriller, pulsing with potential but paced with restraint (as Jonnine says, "it’s what you don’t see that keeps you imagining"). Jonnine’s first solitary offering carries the refinement of her work in the Australian band HTRK. With this EP, a creative block was overcome after years of being urged by her therapist to forge a solo musical identity. It began with a first attempt to play her brother’s broken stringed guitar, unused since 2001, and became these four songs. Written and recorded in Puerto Maldonado, Peru, Big Island, Hawaii and Dandenong Ranges, Australia

“Enchanted UK synth alchemist XVARR blesses Good Morning Tapes’ vinyl series with a gorgeous suite of ambient electronics certain to resonate with disciples of 0PN, Eno, Zoviet France, Colin Potter.  An eldritch beauty ripe with autumnal tone and mushied lushness, ‘She Healed Him In Her Sleep’ follows in the creeping vein of XVARR’s acclaimed 2018 tape ‘Serpent Power’ to bloom his sound with an organic, elemental quality and energy that binds Sufi trance to original kosmische and the kind of quietly humming, pastoral vibe typical of early British synth music.  In four tracks XVARR paints rolling sinewave vistas that unfurl with a timelessly slow-burning and romantic vision, ranging from cinematic sentiments that Eno would be proud of, to passages of amniotic ambient atavism and dream sequence arps that seduce listeners to the sweetest soporific states of mind and distract from everyday reality. The gently elegiac synth-brass fanfare and strings of the title song unmistakably owe as much to 0PN as Eno’s stately early work, while the plangent jangle of ‘Past Masters’ surely recalls the hiraeth and pull of the sea and land found in Zoviet France’s enigmatic rituals. The pulsing ‘Echoes of Time’ most poignantly brims with the Eastern-oriented optimism of ‘60s and ‘70s electronics, channelling Harmonia via JD Emmanuel, and ‘Terminal Manoeuvre’ instinctively dowses a bout of BoC-like nostalgia in 3 minutes of lilting melody and elliptical oscillator wooze. We could hardly imagine a lovelier fanfare for the change of the seasons. Time it all with sunset,...
