Joe "Shithead" Keithley, Canada's godfather of punk, has teamed with his cronies Floor Tom Jones (drums) and Dirty Dan Sedan (bass) for one of D.O.A.'s hardest-hitting albums yet. Talk - Action = 0 (not to be confused with the long-out-of-print 1991 live album Talk Minus Action Equals Zero) is the band's lucky 13th studio album and sees them returning to their roots; initial reports have drawn comparisons to D.O.A.'s classic first two albums: Something Better Change and Hardcore '81. There's plenty of what you would expect from the boys--power, politics and humor--with a few unique twists thrown in just to keep the punks on their toes.
Talk - Action = 0 opens with the blistering "That's Why I Am an Atheist," followed by the Eddie-Cochran-inspired "Rebel Kind." The angry anthem "Don't Bank on a Bank" and the all-too-timely "I Live in a Car" offer further proof that D.O.A. is an accurate barometer of the social climate. The reality does not stop there, though, as "The R.C.M.P." exposes the misdeeds of Canada's national police force. The band also hits some real highs with their ode to Star Trek, "Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Bones," as well covers of "The Times They Are A-Changin' "and "That's Amore."
The album was produced by chief punk Keithley along with Chon (Live Free or Die). As with all their releases, Talk - Action = 0 serves as a reminder of D.O.A's influence on three generations of fans and musicians, from Green Day, Rancid and the Offspring to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Henry Rollins--and the list goes on...
