In April 2009, 20 Buck Spin released the Sacred Death split LP between Oakland's Laudanum and Stormcrow. That record featured two exclusive Laudanum tracks and led Cosmo Lee of the Invisible Oranges blog to claim Sacred Death "may be the heaviest split I've ever heard." While the band's two sludge / doom contributions clearly stood out from the pack, it is on their sophomore full-length album, The Coronation, that the band's world-eating heaviness is fully realized. Joining the husband-and-wife duo of Judd Hawk (overdriven string corrosion, ambient texture, and documentation) and Becky Hawk (battering ram and subsonic transmissions) are Greg Wilkinson (low-end frequency discharge, vocal disruption, and auditory experimentation; also of Brainoil, Pig Heart Transplant, Earhammer Studios) and the latest addition, Nathan Misterek on "battery acid, bellows, and blasphemy," or what most call vocals. Misterek, widely known as vocalist for the legendary Graves At Sea, adds an element of occult grimness previously absent from Laudanum's corrosive noise-doom wasteland--the final piece in the puzzle. On The Coronation, punishing, bruised sludge doom and bleak industrial noise experiments are fused ever more tightly together into a cohesive soundtrack for the slow collapse of modern life and culture. The intense low-frequency pummel of Wilkinson's bass rumble is itself an apparent cause for some of this collapse, such is its massive, earth-shaking power. Becky's crushing drum beats rival Dale Crover in sheer intensity and brute force; Judd's repetitive, stone-slab riffs carry the weight of the world; and Misterek's vocals, colliding with Becky's, coat the whole...

The Sleeping Eye by Iron Age

Iron Age

The Sleeping Eye
20 Buck Spin

In 2009 Iron Age unleashed their second album The Sleeping Eye upon the world like a many-tentacled monstrosity, ripping to shreds boundaries between epic heavy metal and punishing hardcore. Now, ten years on from its initial foray into earthly realms, The Sleeping Eye has awakened again as 20 Buck Spin re-releases the now legendary Texas crossover masterpiece.  Pushing forward from their 2006 Constant Struggle debut, The Sleeping Eye presents crossover with an arid, menacing desolation and bold spirit, confidently going beyond the genre’s limits to introduce tastefully complex arrangements and experimentation with style. Working equally as individual songs and a distinct conceptual whole, Iron Age forged an album of lasting importance and influence. Adorned with new artwork by Jerry “Wyrmwalk” Hionis to more fully embrace the deeply-rooted Lovecraftian madness at the album’s core, this albums remains, ten years later, as powerful as ever, reigniting the Iron Age, and its impact can be widely felt throughout the metal / hardcore scene of the last decade.

The idea for a collaboration between Canada's prolific neo-doom duo Nadja and New Zealand's pitch black droners Black Boned Angel was first hatched in conversations between 20 Buck Spin and Nadja's Aidan Baker around the time Nadja released their Truth Becomes Death EP on Alien8 Recordings in 2006. 20 Buck Spin ran the idea by Campbell Kneale of Black Boned Angel, who at that point was unfamiliar with Nadja. After Kneale heard their material, the complimentary potential was realized, and the groups began their cross-continental collaboration by digitally sending music back and forth. Both groups, along with Campbell's altar-ego Birchville Cat Motel, were extremely busy releasing their own material, but by the end of 2007, the collaborative effort had realized three fully formed tracks. One called "Christ Send Light" that included vocals was released in 2008 as a CD EP on Kneale's own Battlecruiser imprint; the other two make up this full-length release. With the CD being a collaborative effort, 20 Buck Spin convinced two close comrades, David D'Andrea and Stephen Kasner, to collaborate on artwork. Again, artistic collaborations take a great deal of time, and finally in 2009 both art and music have finally come together for this much-anticipated release. These two 20-plus-minute instrumental tracks have a less accessible vibe then the Jesu-like track on last year's Christ Send Light EP. They are comprised in equal parts of Nadja's fuzzed-out, lurching, hazy dream-doom, and Black Boned Angel's razor-sharp, metallic riff-shards. An extended passage of static noise bleeds one track...

Upon its original release in 2005, the split LP by doom heavyweights Graves at Sea and Asunder was immediately hailed as the greatest doom split LP of all time. It captures both bands at their pinnacle and in fact turned out to be the swan song for the revered Graves at Sea. The original 20 Buck Spin vinyl release, featuring the captivating artwork of David D'Andrea, sold out within a few months and has been unavailable since except from eBay opportunists.  20 Buck Spin has been harassed constantly about repressing this LP ever since it went out of print over three years ago. Finally, the time has come to make this milestone release available again. Graves at Sea's side features the two strongest and well produced tunes they unleashed in their short lifespan. "Pariah" is one of the best, heaviest doom tracks ever recorded, with its warm wall of down-tuned Orange amplification, lumbering pace, and black-bile vokillz; "Reclamation" is another ten-minute marathon of treacherous, monolithic riffs and banshee screams.  Asunder's track, "Whited Sepulcher," came as the immediate follow-up to their stunning, landmark A Clarion Call album, widely recognized as their most essential work. This track follows on that album's monumentally heavy, but always structured and memorable approach. Highlighting influences like early Peaceville Records doom and covering it in the filth that only Oakland can harness, "Whited Sepulcher" is approximately 20 minutes of funereal doom that churns the bowls and empties the tear ducts all at once. A War For Wonder by Echtra

Echtra

A War For Wonder
20 Buck Spin

Echtra is the solo project of one-half of the apocalyptic atavist black metal duo Fauna. Originating from the green forests of Cascadia, Echtra's music reflects the deep sense of reverence that emanates from the surrounding rich natural landscape. Steeped in live ritual, Echtra transmutes betrayal and abandonment into wisdom on A War of Wonder, conjuring visions of the soul achieving its ultimate reintegration into the corpus of Spirit.  Conceived in 2004 and utilized for ritual performance two years later, A War for Wonder chronicles an experimental aural landscape, eschewing allegiance to the strict confines of black metal in the relentless pursuit of personal mastery. Consciousness is immersed in a musicality wherein the abstractions of "genre" drift away as the sound deepens and swirls, engaging the emotional and etheric bodies in tandem with the intellect.  As the wooden timelessness of the acoustic melds with the distorted vibration of electricity, a new gnosis is reached, shielded from the reductive eyes of reason and allowed to loosen the bonds of the true being within. Containing this liberation is the seed of Echtra, the heroic journey of the Self from the shadows.  "This is how performances should be. A dance that engages your senses, sight and sound, smell and touch. This was a dance that evoked pure visceral emotion. This was a journey that brought the viewer from the temporal world to a primordial consciousness within their self-being. It was an honor to be present at this event, and I know...

Stormcrow and Laudanum, two bands from Oakland, California (the same city that birthed Neurosis and was home to Dystopia, Brainoil, and Asunder), approach heavy music from different angles with equally devastating results.  Stormcrow has been fairly prolific over the last few years, releasing split records with Mass Grave, Skaven, and Sanctum. During this time the band has built a reputation as the heaviest and most epic metallic crust band since the mighty Bolt Thrower. Here, they deliver two more masterpieces of skullcrushing power, adding elements of doom and Swedish death metal into their sound--easily their best songs yet.  Laudanum released their largely overlooked debut, The Apotheker, back in 2004 and a 7-inch in 2007. They come from a much more doomed spectrum, as though The Melvins and Swans had been left to rot in some dank Oakland industrial zone. Indeed, Laudanum's sound is outright industrial-influenced noise interspersed with their gristled doom riffage. Their two tracks on Sacred Death anticipate their forthcoming full-length, The Coronation, due on 20 Buck Spin later this year.

Kylesa

Static Tensions
20 Buck Spin

Savannah, Georgia's Kylesa returns with their fourth full-length, their second as a five-piece with two drummers after 2006's monumental breakthrough Time Will Fuse Its Worth. Three years later, the band fully utilizes the many percussive possibilities that such a lineup provides, immediately apparent on the blistering opening track, "Scapegoat."  Kylesa has also progressed with their songwriting, both in terms of the psychedelia suggested on the previous LP and the sheer brute force and memorable structures for which they've become known over the course of their three albums and several EPs. The occasional blackened death metal feel of "Said and Done" and the piano-laced, Middle-Eastern-tinged "Running Red" highlight this diversity of sound, yet it remains distinctly Kylesa. The percussion-heavy "Unknown Awareness" is perhaps the most emotionally heavy tune the band has ever written.  Static Tensions is Kylesa's most definitive statement and will surely top year-end lists across the board. Featuring artwork by John Dyer Baizley of Baroness, the album's visual aesthetic matches the cerebral nature of the music. With a massive touring schedule planned throughout 2009, Kylesa will be out constantly in full support of their singular, unique vision.  EAST COAST DATES W/ AMEBIX 1/29 * Bowery Ballroom, NYC 1/30 * AS220, Providence, RI 1/31 * Starlite Theater, Phila, PA  JAPAN DATES W/ BIRUSHANAH 2/6 * Huck Finn, Nagoya 2/7 * Earthdom, Tokyo 2/8 * TBA, Tokyo 2/11 * 51, Gifu 2/13 * Graf, Fukuoka 2/14 * Club Squad, Yamaguchi 2/15 * Club Drop, Osaka  US...

Fields / Church Of Broken Glass by Hammers Of Misfortune

Hammers Of Misfortune

Fields / Church Of Broken Glass
20 Buck Spin

The theater of San Francisco's Hammers of Misfortune return to the stage again with its latest performance piece, Fields / Church of Broken Glass. Master auteur John Cobbett (also of the blackened Ludicra) delivers a work specifically written for the double-vinyl format. Two distinct and separate albums, each with its own theme and aesthetic, joined at the spine. And with the its progressive and overtly '70s sound, it recalls a time when the double-vinyl format meant a unique dual thematic experience rather than a single album that was simply too long for two sides.  On Fields / Church of Broken Glass, Hammers of Misfortune continue with the political allegories and metaphors that were featured prominently on their previous LP, The Locust Years. As with all aspects of the band, a great deal of care was taken with the lyrical presentation of the album, avoiding the usual progressive and metal cliches. The sound goes further into the vintage sound of 1970s space travelers like Hawkwind, and the organ/keyboard/piano elements and female vocals feature more prominently then ever. Additionally, new singer Patrick Goodwin ably fills previous lead vocalist Mike Scalzi's large shoes with a voice perfectly suited to the warmer, analog vibe of the newer songs.  A new Hammers of Misfortune record is always an event for the band's vast worldwide following. Only one previous Hammers LP has actually been pressed to vinyl, and with the arrival of Fields / Church of Broken Glass on the deluxe double-LP format, the...

***REISSUED ON CD!!! The first full-length from Seattle's Book of Black Earth, originally released in 2006, The Feast is reissued here in remastered form in anticipation of their forthcoming Prosthetic Records (Kylesa, Neuraxis) debut, Horoskopus, and their October 2008 US tour supporting Sweden's mighty Watain.  Punishing and memorable blackened death metal similar to early Amorphis (Karelian Isthmus-era) meeting head on with Deicide is the territory The Feast treads. Subtle keyboard strains throughout give an epic and vast quality to the songs (yes, actual songs). Vocalist TJ Cowgill's (Teen Cthulhu) menacing and layered guttural delivery coupled with the assault of Joe Axler's (Skarp) double-bass drum march propel the songs comfortably alongside far more experienced and noteworthy bands in the genre (Nile, Hate Eternal, Behemoth). Contrary to most death metal, The Feast is precise and over soon enough to leave the listener wanting more.  Their new album "Horoskopus" is being released on Prosthetic Records the same day.   "Both on disc and live, Book of Black Earth excels at playing dark, aggressive music that is absolutely mesmerizing." --Soundofthesound.com   "A first-class exercise in what an aggressive, symphonic black metal album should be: vicious, catchy and uncompromising." --Voidofexpression.net   "Everything is as cold as death and as black as an unwashed funeral shroud." --Terrorizer Magazine

Life’s Trade by Samothrace

Samothrace

Life’s Trade
20 Buck Spin

20 Buck Spin first heard Samothrace at a party in Austin during SXSW 2007. It was a crude rehearsal recording, but the label instantly recognized how amazing these songs were and was soon in touch with the Lawrence, Kansas band to release their debut record.  Samothrace plays ultra-heavy doom with harsh, alcohol-soaked vocals. A somber melodic sense also permeates the four long tracks on the record--not in the overused, weepy Euro-doom tradition, but distinctly Midwestern, soulful, and blues-inflected. The songs shimmer with desperation, hopelessness, and pain. The melodic interplay of guitarist Bryan Spinks and Renata Castagna is distinct for such a heavy doom band, and each song is meticulously crafted for maximum emotional impact.  With several US tours under their belts, Samothrace have already familiarized themselves to their audience and won over doom fanatics across the country. With an upcoming 70-date Fall tour, the band will be out in heavy support of Life's Trade during 2008, with more US and Europe touring planned for early 2009. Recorded and mixed by Sanford Parker (Buried At Sea, Pelican, Nachtmystium), Life's Trade rates as a stunning debut by a band soon to be on top of the doom genre.

Endless Coming Into Life by Black Boned Angel

Black Boned Angel

Endless Coming Into Life
20 Buck Spin

Campbell Kneale, of prolific one-man bliss drone project Birchville Cat Motel, returns to his metallic alter-ego Black Boned Angel.   Both projects chase a similar idea from different ends of the spectrum. The Endless Coming Into Life is Kneale's third full-length release as Black Boned Angel (in addition to a slew of CDR EPs), all released by 20 Buck Spin. This work is perhaps Kneale's most obvious combination of the extreme minimalism of his ambient tendencies and the extreme maximalism of his forays into the center of the subterranean metal guitar riff. The album first lulls one into a meditative state of relative calm before plummeting into the chasm created by the vibrations of a single, snarling riff so heavy it could rip a hole in the heavens.   Consisting of a sole one-hour track, The Endless Coming Into Life sits comfortably alongside the darker end of Kneale's ever-growing catalog of work dedicated to finding the light (or dark) source of the universal drone.

Light’s Bane by Trees

Trees

Light’s Bane
20 Buck Spin

The darkened sky and rain-soaked soil of Portland, Oregon, gave birth to the sickly black doom of Trees. Their two-track debut is a shivering trudge through murky, thick, sub-bass sludge riffs with an occasional beat or two.   Recalling the early days of Sub Pop-era Earth and the diseased doom of Burning Witch, Trees continue in the fine tradition of low-end wreckage that the Pacific Northwest seems to breed in its purest (de)form. With a vocalist who would terrify even Graves At Sea with his depraved screams and oral exorcisms, Trees create an atmosphere of psychic terror, like an acid trip gone horribly awry. The members of the band are all long-time adherents to the art of the slow-motion concussion; some share time in Portland drone wizards Tecumseh.   This vinyl version of Light's Bane is strictly limited to a one-time pressing of only 500 copies.

20 Buck Spin

* Re-issue!!!***20 Buck Spin finally unleashes the first vinyl repress of Coffins’ seminal, long-out-of-print third album Buried Death to commemorate the release of their new full-length on Relapse Records, their first in five years. This edition is available on both black vinyl and blue / white “haze” colored vinyl and duplicates the original’s layout including gatefold sleeve. On Buried Death, the Tokyo band established themselves as one of the underground’s leading purveyors of neanderthal-paced doom / death metal. Previous releases, The Other Side of Blasphemy and Mortuary in Darkness, introduced Coffins’ black-tar dirge to an audience eager for slowppressive, maniac riffs and songs that dragged like the knuckles of a lumbering simian. This is derivative and true rather then progressive and new, with an effectiveness unmatched in today’s underground. Immediately battering the listener with the opening sledgehammer “Under the Stench,” Buried Death crawls forward through the band’s catchiest tracks ever, such as the Celtic-Frost-at-16-RPM narcoplunder of “Cadaver Blood.” The patented brick-heavy guitar tone remains, while the band delivers some additional solos and high vocal screams, hinted at on 2006’s The Other Side of Blasphemy album. Rather than toy with forced “evolution,” Coffins has instead sharpened and honed its devolved sound further toward primitive singlemindedness.  “... seas of fire that dare to cease into one great phallic tree of scorched black magma; plate-shifting, fault-felling divergence. That’s goddamned guitar tone.” —Stewart Voegtlin, Dusted

Taking the foundations of the genre’s forebears (Crossed Out, No Comment, MITB, etc) and streamlining it for today’s harsh realities, The Endless Blockade is furious hardcore meets crawling sludge. Primitive is the Blockade’s second LP, following the debut LP Turn Illness Into A Weapon, several EPs and split LPs (with Iron Lung, Warzone Womyn and Hatred Surge). Primitive is the band’s most fully realized work thus far, with great care taken in tying the album together musically, visually and lyrically. SCOTT HULL’s mix is both clear and raw while GLYN SMYTH’s artwork visually represents the doomsday cults, fanatics and radicals that provide the backdrop for the LP’s deranged pace and surgically precise twists and turns. From his work with the pioneering black industrial band MZ.412 to his many solo ventures under his own name, to collaborations with MERZBOW, to other projects like FOLKSTORM and TOROIDH, Bjorkk has been prolific to say the least. The common element in all his work has been overwhelming darkness and dread. Under the VARGR moniker, Bjorkk returns to his roots in a way. Crimson Umbrella by Rakhim

Crimson Umbrella

***What if Z’ev had written the intro to Darkthrone’s Blaze In The Northern Sky? With that question in mind Finland’s RAKHIM unearth Crimson Umbrella, a two-track fit of kraut-noise psychosis, schizophrenic percussive clatter and layers of effects and over-processed vocal chants and screams. The nightmarish deconstruction of “Transylvanian Error” and “Ultimate Sword” bare only trace elements of main members KRYPT and RUDIMENTOR’s day jobs in CIRCLE and PHARAOH OVERLORD, with Rakhim indulging in sonic terror too far gone for the aforementioned bands. Although the album’s title makes reference to Finland’s great Jesters Of Destiny, Rakhim would more aptly call to mind Wolf Eyes filtered through a lengthy Faust tape jam. Best experienced through headphones at appropriately ear-bleeding volume.

***NOW AVAILABLE ON CD!!! WORMWOOD originated in Lawrence, Kansas back in 1997. 10 years and a move to Seattle later Starvation, the band’s second full-length epic, is ready to be unleashed. Building on the foundations laid out on 2000’s debut LP Requiescat, Starvation is a swirling vortex of psychedelic panic, doom-crusted metal and somber minor key prog mania. Imagine Souls At Zero-era Neurosis with the apocalypse turned inward, or Tarantula Hawk and Crash Worship on a black doom metal bender. Not surprisingly BILLY ANDERSON’s (Neurosis, Swans, Sleep) production signature graces Starvation, highlighting the double bass guitar technicality and sample-laden paranoia. Starvation is an album that must be digested over the course of multiple listens to fully comprehend everything going on in its vast, insular 70-minute-plus mental web.

Bliss & Void Inseparable by Black Boned Angel

Black Boned Angel

Bliss & Void Inseparable
20 Buck Spin

***The latest and greatest from Campbell Kneale’s Black Boned Angel alter-ego. Another one-hour metallic drone epic that picks up where the critically unclaimed Supereclipse fiasco left off. Less suffocating than its unbearably caustic predecessor, Bliss & Void Inseparable sees Kneale creating a funereal dirge that merges the ferocious power of Black Boned Angel with the blissful dronespace of his main project Birchville Cat Motel. This makes for a journey that is both meditative and monumentally metallic satiating those into the more spacious forays of CORRUPTED, the Sub-Pop era recordings of EARTH or GODHEADSILO and the existential eccentricities of Z’EV or TRIBES OF NEUROT.

Documents Of Grief by Graves At Sea

Graves At Sea

Documents Of Grief
20 Buck Spin

***GRAVES AT SEA from Arizona have made a lot of noise in the underground the past few years. Already considered one of the best Doom bands in existence the band has yet to issue their debut LP (coming later this year on a much bigger label)! Documents Of Grief was self-released by the band back in 2003 and quickly sold out and hasn’t been seen since. The band followed it up with an EP for the SOUTHERN LORD 7 inch series and then last years highly praised split album with ASUNDER (released by 20 BUCK SPIN on vinyl). 20 BUCK SPIN loved Documents Of Grief so much that we convinced the band to let us release it officially in anticipation of their debut LP and their upcoming May 2006 tour, and for those who missed out before. This is an essential document of Doom’s present and future!

Blood Tantra by Mrtyu

Mrtyu

Blood Tantra
20 Buck Spin

***Imagine a fucked up crossbreed of (Salt Marie Celeste era) NURSE WITH WOUND, KHANATE and THROBBING GRISTLE and you can start to imagine the sound of New Zealand’s MRTYU! MRTYU! is Antony Milton of the PseudoArcana label, NETHER DAWN, a BLACK BONED ANGEL member, and a proflific solo artist with releases on LAST VISIBLE DOG, JEWELLED ANTLER, CELEBRATE PSI, etc... The sound is a mix of back woods New Zealand and modern urban decay. When the deep bass detonations lash out on “Rites of Death in Body Temple” you’re not quite sure whether it’s the sound of an ancient Aboriginal ritual or the menacing 808 war march of a midnight low-rider with its lights low and sawed-offs strapped. Harsh noise, Industrial Sludge & Narco-Metal meeting at the crossing of the Styx.
