Navigating The Bronze, the fifth studio album from Seattle's AKIMBO, is their heaviest and most dynamic release to date. This battle axe of a record was sculpted at Head Bang and Kill Your Mama studio in Louisville, KY with Chris Owens (LORDS, ED GEIN, YOUNG WIDOWS, etc.) whose talent for capturing heavy-hitting bands culminated in ten songs sure to crumble the walls around your stereo. Navigating The Bronze, AKIMBO's second full-length on Alternative Tentacles (third including the 2007 reissue of Harshing Your Mellow - VIRUS 369) features a revamped lineup with fretboard wizard Aaron Walters on guitar and the familiar cement-tight rhythm section of founding members Nat Damm (drums) and Jon Weisnewski (bass/vocals). In addition to a refreshed guitar sound, Weisnewski's token throat-shredding has evolved into a deeper, more ferocious bellow, lending a primal quality to the vocals as well as fueling the inferno with new melodies. Tracks like "You Can Hear the Honey", "Wizard Van Wizard" and "Huge Muscles" will sound instantly familiar to the seasoned AKIMBO connoisseur with frantic pacing and more changes than one can count on two hands. However, Navigating The Bronze has its cache of surprises for old fans, including a classical tribute to Bach in "Megatherium" and drummer Nat Damm - a multiple Seattle Weekly Best Drummer nominee - doing his first ever solo track "Roman Coins." At once the most varied and sonically mature AKIMBO record thus far, Navigating The Bronze is certain to take the band to the next level. AKIMBO will...

When we at Alternative Tentacles see words like "reunion" or "recently reformed," we tend roll our eyes and pay no heed. So imagine our surprise when the reformed ZOLAR X wrote and performed some new songs that were seriously good, and fit snugly into their old oevre as heard in our ZOLAR X anthology Timeless (Virus 319). Jello calls ZOLAR X "the missing link between CHROME and THE STOOGES," Rock Scene called them "PINK FLOYD crossed with BLACK SABBATH"; however you do the math, X Marks The Spot features all new songs that are the triumphant result of an intergalactic cross-pollination of glam, power pop, proto-punk and a little bit of metal-and, of course, some advanced space elf aesthetic. While their 1970s attempt at intergalactic conquest didn't quite consummate, ZOLAR X's tireless ambition and diligent songwriting efforts pay off in yet another stellar work. You got over the alien antennae and Spock haircuts and loved Timeless. It's time to get over the "reunion" label and get ready for X Marks The Spot!

BACK IN STOCK!!! Note new price. The Alternative Tentacles "Reissues Of Necessity" is back! We've hooked another live one from the swirling depths of the most obscure, desirable, and just plain deranged. Like many early punk pioneers THE EAT operated in a near-total vacuum. This time in that infamous cesspool of clueless retirees and moronic sun worshippers known as South Florida. Their classic 7"s were rare and sought after from the moment they came out, distribution was nil, most were given away at shows and crushed on the spot, some even wound up lining parrot cages. As a result, Communist Radio and God Punishes The Eat are some of the most sought after and obscenely expensive Killed By Death items on eBay. Th e band's angle on the world has a lot to do with this. Political concerns like "Communist Radio", "Nut Cops", "Kneecappin" and "Nixon's Binoculars." Environmental awareness like "Manatee Smacker," "M-80 Ant Death" and "Living Like a Pig", and numerous celebrations of that seedy Florida lifestyle like "Catholic Love", "Silly Drug Songs", "Money for the Police" and "Psychotic McHale's Navy." THE EAT reappeared sporadically clear through the mid-'90s, yet still seemed unaware how wide their cult and notoriety had spread, especially among people who've never actually heard them. So now everyone can! Both early 7"s are here, the dropouts in the fi ve God Punishes songs fixed up at last, followed by the entire Scattered Wahoo Action cassette album and all the unreleased songs from their aborted Hialeah album...

The animated and impassioned ROBERT FISK is internationally known for his in-depth reporting from the Middle East for various newspapers, including The Guardian (UK) and the Times of London. On this CD he discusses the realities, risks, and rewards of covering one of the most complex political situations on the planet for the past 30 years. With unparalleled access to history-makers in the region, Fisk recounts the rise of Hezbollah, his interviews with Osama Bin Laden, and the growing Iraqi insurgency. The 76 minute audio CD includes a October 2005 lecture and an April 2005 interview with acclaimed Alternative Radio host, David Barsamian. The interview covers the rise of Hezbollah to their interest in the Iraqi insurgency, the likely cost and consequences of the US presence in the region, interviewing Bin Laden, and the role of hired mercenaries in Iraq. The lecture focuses on the roots of western domination in the Middle East through today, and on the tragic consequences of this sordid history. The booklet includes an exclusive transcript of an illuminating Q&A session between FISK and Barsamian from April 2006. "The most famous foreign correspondent in Britain"- New York Times ROBERT FISK is a Beirut-based correspondent for the Independent UK, and author of The Great War for Civilisation and Pity the Nation. He has lived in Beriut, Lebanon for the past 30 years. This is a split release with AK Press.

***GREG PALAST, New York Times best-selling author and award-winning investigative journalist has spent the last thirty years getting the goods on the corporate con men, political hucksters, and "free-trade" gurus who would auction off your children's future to the lowest bidder. Greg Palast Live from the Armed Madhouse, a follow-up to Weapon of Mass Instruction (Virus 312), is Palast's most provocative and caustically funny yet. Armed with over fifty classified documents, confidential memos, and secret plans liberated from the Pentagon, FBI, World Bank, and ExxonMobil, Palast cuts through the TV news baby-talk. It was Palast, for BBC TV, who first uncovered how Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris stole Election 2000. Harris calls him "twisted," and here's the new twist revealed in this CD: Palast tells you that Kerry won in 2004 and 2008 is already fixed. Palast's reports have been exiled from America to British Broadcasting Corporation's top current affairs show, Newsnight, and England's Guardian newspapers. Author of the New York Times bestseller, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, Palast turned his skills to journalism after two decades as a top investigator of corporate fraud and racketeering. Awards bestowed on his work include: George Orwell Courage in Journalism, Patron of the Trinity College Philosophical Society, Guerrilla News Network's Guerrilla of the Year, and many more. This speech was recorded in 2006 at the Fletcher Lounge, University of Tampa.

Originally released by Swedish jazz imprint Moserobie in 2003, this live album features a special one-time performance of Swedish political punk band THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY in collaboration with noted jazz musicians Jonas Kullhammar and Sven-Erik Dahlberg. Live In Oslo features songs from T(I)NC's first two albums on Epitaph, Survival Sickness and A New Morning, Changing Weather, transformed into more dreamy arrangements. While retaining the T(I)NC-ness of the original material, the band with their guest musicians improvise freely for some spaced-out jams. The fact that Dahlberg and Kullhammar, a five-time Swedish Grammy nominee, are accomplished jazz musicians is an icing on the cake of this surprise party. Reminiscent of political Dutch band THE EX's collaboration with avant garde cellist Tom Cora in the early 1990s, Live In Oslo demonstrates T(I)NC's willingness to take risks and collaborate with musicians practicing different genres to expand their sound successfully. Live In Oslo has never been available commercially in North America and is highly sought after by the bands large fan-base, making this the missing album in T(I)NC's catalog. Alternative Tentacles is proud to bring this album stateside, revealing a whole new facet to a familiar band with an established sound.

Considering today's Red State/Blue State dialectic, you'd think Alternative Tentacles, with our "San Francisco values", and a Southern-fried party band from Baton Rouge (which translates to "RED stick"), Louisiana would be like oil and water, an assumption that couldn't be more wrong! AT and DASH RIP ROCK continue the joint enterprise that began with their twenty-year retrospective Recyclone (Virus 329) in 2005 with Hee Haw Hell, an all new album by the undisputed kings of Southern country punk. Hee Haw Hell blows any stereotypes about Red staters, punks and country rockers out of the water with the genius of its conceit: it's a country punk opera based on...Dante's Inferno! With spoken parts and good ol' rock-n-roll, DASH RIP ROCK tells the story of Donkey's tour of Hell (populated by ghosts of LYNRD SKYNRD and hippie jam bands) with Ol' Virg. As if a country-punkifi ed version of a 14th century Italian epic poem isn't over the top, guest stars MOJO NIXON and JELLO BIAFRA, among others, guarantee that Hee Haw Hell will be a thespian and musical piece de resistance. If you can party to a Southern rock legend and learn about Dante by osmosis at the same time, then what you got there is called a win-win situation.

After being out of print for years, early 2007 brings the re-release of AT touring machine AKIMBO's debut release Harshing Your Mellow. Released in 2001 on start-up label Amalagate Records, this is the original album that got AKIMBO moving like a pissed-off snowball. All original 10 songs are here, plus an additional scorching cover of "Vertigo" by LA punk legends SCREAMERS, which was recorded in the same session under the mastery of Wes Weresch (C AVERAGE, ENEMYMINE, VALIS). This vicious, frantic, menacing album captures the band's intense early years before they embraced the more heavy and paced sound that characterized their blistering 2006 Alternative Tentacles debut Forging Steel And Laying Stone. Fans of '80s style driving punk rock (BLACK FLAG, NOMEANSNO, DEAD KENNEDYS) take note, this is the modern album that should have been released on Alternative Tentacles back in the early years. Featuring the original AKIMBO line-up of Jon Weisnewski, Nat Damm and Jared Burke Eglington, the album will be reissued with all new artwork in digipack format.

With Iraq gone to hell in a handbasket, Rome falling at home, and the so-called opposition Democrats "searching for a message" as they throw another election, it's high time for BIAFRA and his merry mouth to tip the cow and set the barn on fire. As always, JELLO whacks the moles wherever he finds them in spoken word extravaganza #8. Buried Iraq facts, vote fraud disease, the Arnold puetsch, the blue state/red state "values" myth, Paris in Abu Ghraib, Satanic Santas, a visit to New Orleans and the return of a strange geometry teacher are all part of the info-tainment stew. Other highlights of In the Grip of Official Treason include an expanded version of the MINISTRY song "Ass Clown" from their latest album Rio Grande Blood plus an all-new update of the Gulf War I primal scream classic "Die for Oil, Sucker." Includes all new art by Winston Smith. Live dates and more music shows with the Melvins are planned around the album's release.

"Man, the enemy of men!!! White caucasian cancer corroding life mercilessly." These sweet words open RATOS DE PORAO's new album, Homem Inimigo do Homem, their first release since Onisciente Coletivo (Virus 265) in 2003. This album marks the band's 25th anniversary making them one of the oldest, continually active, and still one of the most intense bands in hardcore. Mixing riffs inspired by thrash metal with the most furious elements of the punk from the last 30 years, Homem Inimigo do Homem is simultaneously a return to their mid '80s sound and an antidote to the extinct trends RDP survived over the years. The verbal machinegun that is so peculiar to RATOS DE PORAO is a form of "Punk Journalism," spotlighting topics such as corruption and sex scandals in the Catholic Church, the still-existing problem of slavery in the Brazilian countryside, and the latest wave of commercial pop punk/emo frauds. Engineer Bernardo Pacheco and producer Daniel Ganjaman, who works with some of Brazil's biggest names in hip hop and rock, captures RDP's intentions, and gives Homem Inimigo do Homem a straight-ahead, organic sound that translates the '80s idiom into the modern age. In a country where nothing is ever certain, one can be sure that 25 years from now, RATOS DE PORAO will still be standing strong, dirtier and more aggressive than ever. For a band that has survived drugs, violence, trends and even morbid obesity, another quarter of a century will be a piece of cake.

LUDICRA takes the title of their second Alternative Tentacles release Fex Urbis, Lex Orbis--the Latin phrase meaning "dregs of the city, law of the earth"--from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. While the pop culture machine managed to make a hit Broadway musical out of it, LUDICRA's emotional and seemingly humanistic approach to black metal seems strangely more faithful to Hugo's vision. Musically, everyone seems to agree that LUDICRA is a one-of-a-kind band: their complex instrumentation and untraditional songwriting transcend the typical bounds of black metal (like fellow SF black metal hordes LEVIATHAN, DRAUGAR, WEAKLING, etc.), incorporating elements of crust, avant-rock and death metal. Fex Urbis, Lex Orbis builds upon their previous release Another Great Love Song (Virus 321), continuing with the musical motifs of corrosive urban decay filled with despair and nihilism. With an ever-expanding fanbase straddling many scenes and a groundswell of critical acclaim from key publications, LUDICRA's Fex Urbis, Lex Orbis is sure to be one of the highlights of 2006 and continues an Alternative Tentacles tradition of releasing the best in progressive heavy sounds (ie. NEUROSIS, ZENI GEVA, COMETS ON FIRE, SKARP, etc).

PILOT SCOTT TRACY is a brainchild of Scott and Tracy Cox-Stanton, formerly of THE CAUSEY WAY--a literal flight of fantasy based on the good old days of air travel when stewardesses coddled you with free beverages and fluffed pillows. Their music, described by one critic as "aggressively homo," is sometimes raw, sometimes pretty, sometimes serious, sometimes silly, a delicious collision of early punk and new wave. The spark of inspiration was set off when Mark Mothersbaugh gave Scott and Tracy a personal tour of the DEVO HQ, schooling them on vintage keyboards, equipment and sounds. As with their last AT outing Any City (Virus 328), Scott dishes out the jagged guitar attacks with his frantic, paranoid vocals while Tracy counteracts with her serene, dreamy voice on the slow numbers, including a sublime cover of the SMITHS' "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out." For We Cut Loose, the lineup has been fortified by four additional members whose resumes include MAN...OR ASTROMAN, MOONEY SUZUKI, etc. Strip away the air travel theme, and you have a solid eff ort that references a slew of original New Wave greats like DEVO, THE B-52S, etc. If you missed the '80s the first time around, then think LADYTRON, STEREO TOTAL or THE POLYSICS. While real-life airlines stagnate and fizzle away into bankruptcy, PST Airlines' stock continues to rise as the general public catches onto the New Wave-Punk hybrid these kids pioneered back in their CAUSEY days. It's time to cash in your frequent flyer...

In Canada's glorious punk history, few embodied the greatness of the 1978-82 era like THE SUBHUMANS (not to be confused with the UK SUBHUMANS). This titan of Vancouver punk engaged with the burgeoning worldwide movement and shared stages with BLACK FLAG, DEAD KENNEDYS and BAD BRAINS. They also lived by their ideology, with Gerry Hannah's involvement in Direct Action protests in the 1980s. New Dark Age Parade, unleashes 14 new songs, the first written by original members Mike Graham, Brian Goble and Gerry Hannah since 1982! Joined by drummer Jon Card (SNFU/DOA), the new songs are every bit as dynamic, powerful and poignant as the band's beloved early material. They rock out with seething intelligence and soulfulness. The sound is both classic and unique; BIAFRA says "you can tell who it is right away," and these guys have been around too long to bother imitating anyone else! Rather than rehashing the past, SUBHUMANS forge ahead with compelling vitality.

Alternative Tentacles is proud to announce the release of Technicolour Mother, San Francisco's TURN ME ON DEAD MAN's anticipated follow-up to God Bless the Electric Freak (Virus 340). TMODM's sophomore effort expands on their signature soundscape of psychedelic peaks and heavy metal/stoner rock depths--"heavydelic" is the band's contribution to the lexicon of music genres--offering a more diverse cadre of songs than their debut. Th e seemingly unlikely team of Eli Crews (BEULAH) and Tim Green (NATION OF ULYSSES, FUCKING CHAMPS)--with TMODM frontman and songwriting wizard Mykill Ziggy at their side--recorded and produced Technicolour Mother, adding yet another layer to the musical complexity with bigger, fuller production than their debut. Simply put, TURN ME ON DEAD MAN plays heavy crush bliss rock breaking the sound barrier on their own private Lear jet headed straight to hell. So put on your headphones, turn up the volume, and let us turn you on to a place where Rock is religion, and religion is loud!

England's THE HEADS have long been considered the lysergic gold standard of the stoner/space rock, psych and garage universe by those in the know. More FUN HOUSE and HAWKWIND than ZEPPELIN, this is the same HEADS that released a compilation CD and two paint-peeling 10"s on Man's Ruin. Think early MUDHONEY but way further off the deep end, blasting off on a hypno-space jam trajectory, without losing track of the songs or that perfect, deadly riff. On their West Coast tour with NEBULA, JELLO BIAFRA was among those floored by THE HEADS: "Wow, two Helios Creeds in one band!" On this, their fifth album, THE HEADS stretch out once again with a bit harder edge than the last outing or two, yet proving they're still the supreme masters of all things wah-wah. An unhealthy obsession with Kraut-rock rears its "head" as well. Expect the back catalog and possible collaboration with JELLO BIAFRA in the not too distant future.

Formed in 1999, DISASTER STRIKES has crafted its own unique brand of punk and hardcore inspired by the likes of ECONOCHRIST, DRI, AUS ROTTEN, CRASS and early ANTHRAX, while channeling the influence of their Boston predecessors SLAPSHOT, MISSION OF BURMA and THE PROLETARIAT. Singer J.R.'s life experience as a full-time union organizer infuses the lyrics (comparable to lyrics by JELLO BIAFRA or MDC at their height) with truth and political edge that can't be bought at Hot Topic. For their Alternative Tentacles debut Liberty Toast, DISASTER STRIKES brought on underground sound sculptor and TODAY IS THE DAY frontman Steve Austin (CONVERGE, UNSANE), who bolsters the album with production that is neither stone cold nor bionic. DISASTER STRIKES' renown has grown continually with inclusion of members from Boston hardcore legends TREE, and their stints supporting such bands as BOY SETS FIRE, RATOS DE PORAO, THE CASUALTIES, TOXIC NARCOTIC and THE UNSEEN. Featuring a guest appearance by JELLO BIAFRA as well as artwork by AT partner-in-crime Winston Smith, Liberty Toast is a quintessentially Alternative Tentacles release, a one-two punch of political awareness and punk backbone, from our ever-expanding arsenal of incendiary East Coast punk acts.

FISH KARMA is not a jam band--he's a person, representing the delicious dementia side of our label that gave you WESLEY WILLIS, BLOWFLY and the CRUCIFUCKS. Born, raised and infected in Tucson, AZ, FISH turned heads, blew minds and tickled funny bones with two previous albums on Mojo Nixon's Triple Nixon imprint, and more recently Lunch With The Devil. His songs feature his unique skewerings of the dark side of Americana as mutated into the sun-damaged retirees, townies and pleasure-seekers only Arizona could create. Music is more basement rock than acoustic this time, recorded once again with FISH's longtime pal, Al Perry (of CATTLE fame). Now relocated to Texas, FISH once again provides badly needed relief from our increasingly Branch Davidian-like government and all those obnoxious, large, golden crosses shackled around puppet celebrity necks at the Grammy Awards. Kind of outsider, kind of blind-sider, with a barb or two at supply-siders, FISH KARMA's in the tent to enlighten and mangle your mind. Artwork by Winston Smith.

After three long years, we have you here a new album by FLESHIES, a loud band from beautiful Oakland, CA, who have released two loved-to-death-by-the-kids albums on Alternative Tentacles. After their second full-length Th e Sicilian (Virus 297) and years of body/mind-warping worldwide tour marathon, FLESHIES withdrew into drummer Brian Hamiltron's Sugar Mountain Studios to work on a new opus. Breaking away from the punk rock tradition of banging out a record in a few days, they took their damned sweet time making the most ridiculous album possible. Scrape Th e Walls is a spirited 17-song eff ort to molest punk rock in a similar manner that SPARKS unwholesomely molested glitter rock, THE MELVINS mauled rock, or THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS maimed music in general. (Speaking of SPARKS, this album includes a delightful cover of "Happy Hunting Ground" with JELLO BIAFRA on guest vocals.) Scrape Th e Walls bounces everywhere from somewhat sunny-dispositioned pseudo anthems to sludgy, stoner rock-esque castings, all glazed with FLESHIES' inimitable sense of fuck-you humor. But honestly, no 200-word summary can neatly tie up the disorderly strands of ideas and musical chaos that is FLESHIES--and we wouldn't want to do them such disservice--so we will just say Scrape Th e Walls is exactly the kind of record AT should be releasing and leave it at that. Alternative Tentacles tosses our well-worn thinking cap into the no-holds-barred, no-child-left-behind ring of Educore with Hell Bent for Letters, the latest outing by Seattle's BLOODHAG. Formed in 1995 to stimulate a communion between literacy and punk/metal, BLOODHAG boasts a lineup of noted science fiction authors Prof. J. B. Stratton, Dr. J. M. McNulty, Sir Zachary Orgel and the shadowy occultist Master Brent Carpenter. They created the genre of Edu-core and operate under the motto "Th e faster you go deaf, the more time you have to read." While BLOODHAG's minute-long songs have the common theme of esteemed authors such as George Orwell and Philip K. Dick--and their live shows include between-song mini-lectures as well as pelting of the audience with books--the music counters with the blunt force of bands like BRUJERIA, PANTERA, SEPULTURA, etc. It's open to debate whether Edu-core can actually pummel literary history into the hungry minds of head-banging youth, but we certainly can't blame BLOODHAG for trying to bridge the gap between death metal tombs and Pulizerwilling tomes or the beer-soaked venues and pristine libraries (yes, they really tour public libraries). With their neckties and pocket protectors cocked and loaded, BLOODHAG is ready to stave off the dumbing down of America. So, invest in the leaders of tomorrow! Buy Hell Bent for Letters today!
