***Pleased to announce that after two years as a digital only release Little Wings' Froggy's is now available on vinyl!! We've been fans of Little Wings for 20 years now so to be able to release a new record from the brilliantly prolific Kyle Field is a dream come true! Not to mention Froggy's is one of the weirder and most amazing Little Wings albums we've heard and we're thrilled to have it here on Astral Editions. Based on a now defunct restaurant in Topanga Canyon California, Froggy's in it's hey day was an inconsistent slap dash affair with some vibrant and rotten nooks and crannies, filled with gloom and haunted sound, mood and libation, much like this creation here. Originally built in 19*coughcoughcough* as the first Topanga Canyon schoolhouse and later bought and owned by Mr. Neil Young (don't know when doesn't matter) this seemingly cursed location has traded hands and been scam wise bought and resold many many times, but it's function never seems to stick.

"The songs pull at you like the dream realm when you are trying to focus on daily life. The songs act as if they’re about to burst into a song you’ve enjoyed a hundred times before but they don’t — their path is sideways, backwards, upside down. And also completely straight, just to fuck with you." -- Bill Callahan

Without Human Permission by Equipment Pointed Ankh

Equipment Pointed Ankh

Without Human Permission
Astral Editions

***Throughout the years EQUIPMENT POINTED ANKH has focused on a sort of long-form blown out raga, noise, drone vibe with various players joining JIM MARLOWE at varying intervals. Within the past 2 years we've seen this core group of five come together as a unit—Marlowe with CHRIS BUSH (Flanger Magazine, CABOLADIES, FLOWER MAN), RYAN DAVIS (STATE CHAMPION, TROPICAL TRASH), SHUTARO NOGUCHI (Feeding Tube artiste) and DAN DAVIS (Tropical Trash). Sometimes it can be a bit cliche to harp on "their new album is a game changer, new direction, etc.," I'll admit, I'm guilty of this. But seriously, Without Human Permission, is an an absolute game changer and new direction for Equipment Pointed Ankh. Go listen to as many of their earlier albums as you'd like (it's worthwhile). You still will not be prepared for Without Human Permission.

***The second album from the Amsterdam-based group Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido, aka Jeroen Kimman's large scale project (on this recording he has 21 co-conspirators) featuring his own compositions. Kimman may not be as well known in the States (hopefully we can rectify that) but he has made a varied and impressive career in Amsterdam as a composer, hired gun guitarist and doing about anything you could imagine. Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido features a who's who of the Amsterdam-scene (and beyond): Leo Svirsky, Jasper Stadhouders, Anna voor de Wind, Tristan Renfrow, Mark Morse, Onno Govaert, John Dikeman, Koen Nutters and on and on. The music on traantjes is about as varied and difficult to fully describe as Kimman himself, but the album lands as a truly modern take on Exotica (not the '90s version either or just cheeky throwback references) that borrows from the worlds of soundtrack music, improvisation/jazz, folk music and so much more. A kaleidoscopic work that somehow never sacrifices melody amidst the shifting rhythms and complex arrangements. A rare feat to harness such a succinct and clear sound from such a large group and varied sonic palette, see especially "bubble," "bye bye things," and "feels." (STREET DATE - 8/27/2021)

***"Underground music is filled with all kinds of characters, personalities, and peculiarities. Rare are the musical/artistic soul mates who have forged life, as well as creative, partnerships. Foundationally, the work of couples like Alice and John Coltrane or La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela set standards of artists who share a complete aesthetic worldview, in which the pair complement and lift each other to higher vistas, the newly created work completely collaborative and unable to be untangled from its divine union. More recently, soul mate musicians like Wayne Rogers and Kate Village, or Rick Brown and Sue Garner, continue in this seemingly impossible tradition, a lifetime of musical co-expression. Jen Powers and Matthew Rolin, as the Powers/Rolin Duo, are the latest, fully realized musical version of this unique dynamic. On their new album Strange Fortune, for the Astral Spirits sister label Astral Editions, the pair offers a sage-scented, instrumental love poem, which straddles the lines of psychedelic and folk idioms. Over the course of four extended tracks, including the sidelong “Amaranth,” showers of 12-string acoustic guitar and hammered dulcimer mix to dizzying heights as the two players weave in and out of each other's melodies, finishing each other's musical sentences. The sounds of the instruments commingle, yielding a cosmic sense of compatibility as if there is little distinction between the players. Over the past few years, the Powers/Rolin duo has spread its developments over a string of limited LP releases and hard to find cassettes. Strange Fortune, which was recorded...

Anáhuac's use of minimal objects/percussion, small electronics, extended bass techniques and treated obscure found footage vinyl creates a perplexed sound world shifting from one obscure state to the next with sometimes film like atmospheres. The resulting music arises from a shared interest in an abstracted electro-acoustic aesthetic that is at times densely static and dynamically disorienting. Having initially met during the 2015 No Idea Festival in Austin, Texas, Chris Cogburn, Juan Garcia and Ignaz Schick started to work as a trio in Mexico City in 2016. The trio soon embarked on two extensive tours of Mexico (May 2016; October 2017), performing and recording in Mexico City, Morelia, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Oaxaca.
