Legendary English underground band Zounds first came to prominence in the early 1980s with a string of independent chart hits on Rough Trade and Crass Records. Growing out of the London-area squatter communities, they quickly became key figures in the burgeoning DIY / anarcho-punk scene and toured Europe with contemporaries such as The Mob, Poison Girls, Crass, The Birthday Party and many others. On record, their sound was more expansive than most punk of the era. In Rough Trade: Labels Unlimited, author Rob Young describes Zounds as “a distinctively paranoid and claustrophobic sonic crush that avoid[s] formulaic protest song.” Their Rough Trade album The Curse of Zounds! is now recognized as a classic of the genre and one of the most inspirational albums of the post-punk period. A notorious recluse, songwriter and lead singer Steve Lake has reunited Zounds only intermittently since the band’s early ’80s heyday, despite receiving numerous requests to record and tour. The ten songs he has written for The Redemption of Zounds retain all the hallmarks of the classic template: incisive lyrics, sharp guitars, satirical overtones, emotional terror and great, memorable tunes. It sounds totally at home in a modern world that Lake claims “is as bewildering, absurd, tragic and joyful as it ever was.”

Dadfag’s soaring and orchestral creations are the work of two guitarists (Eva Hannan, Danielle Benson) and one insane drummer (Alan Miknis). Since forming in 2008, the band has released a pair of albums, touring the States last year in support of their Broken Rekids LP, Scenic Abuse. Dadfag are a blistering young San Francisco three-piece that has been kicking the West Coast's ass for a couple of years at house parties, warehouses, and clubs. The band members--two girls on vocals, a boy on drums--fled from the South, sweaty, bored, and sick of explaining themselves. The trio started practicing as Dadfag shortly thereafter in a borrowed practice space in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood. One year, 30 songs and 17,000 shows later, Eva Hannan, Alan Miknis, and Danielle Benson are still playing with dildos, baking pies, and making people uncomfortable. The Broken Rekids promotional department would like to mention that the music and vocals are reminiscent of Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch mixed with hardcore punk. Opération S was Cecilia and Iwan’s project after their beloved garage punk band The No-Talents broke up in 1999. They took their music in a powerful and melodic new direction, adding a keyboard and only singing in French. Their sole full-length sounds like a long-lost album from a late-’70s punk / new wave band. Broken Rekids has reissued a small pressing on red vinyl with a download card using the original parts as a companion to The No-Talents reissue. The band members have had many projects since both re- cords were released but are now looking back and forwards at the same time—The No-Talents have a reunion show in Spain at the end of October and Cecilia has toured this year up and down the West Coast promoting new releases with her current band Sex Crime.
