Live At Roadburn 2011 by Acid King

Acid King

Live At Roadburn 2011
Burning World

***Stoner faves ACID KING's live set from the 2011 Roadburn Festival now available courtesy of the band. ”As punters filtered into the venue, the smell of hashish washed over the crowd, and as a projection of Horror and Biker flicks was kicked into motion, the blistering opening riff of 2 Wheel Nation splintered through the crowd. As the cosmic riff grooved along, LORI’s sultry and hypnotic vocals took hold, and soon the bands sheer presence and powerful sound became captivating. The bands lumbering, bluesy sound perfectly evoked the atmosphere of the festival and through many of their tracks, the bass rumbled through the jiving crowd. Through each planet destroying riff a multitude of scorching lights shone over the crowd, soon the room was a hot, sweaty vortex of sound. While the band played a wide range of songs from their numerous albums, it was great to hear 'Silent Circle,' 'Electric Machine,' 'Busse Woods' and 'Sunshine and Sorrow' in a live setting, the stunning sound system was incredibly immersive and complemented the music perfectly.”—Paul Robertson.

In A Dark Tongue by Harvestman

Harvestman

In A Dark Tongue
Burning World

***Harvestman is the brainchild of Neurosis vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till, who considers In a Dark Tongue a venture into an imagined past. The album is inspired by Hawkwind, Fairport Convention, Tangerine Dream, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Skullflower, Caspar Brotzman, and Loop, among others. It is a massive meeting point of styles and influences, all of which boil down to a surreal and inspired sound. Long known for blazing guitar trails in the heavy music realm, Von Till once again turns his attention to a world of pure yet abstract psychedelic rock guitar. This second record as Harvestman is even more loosely hung upon the framework of traditional music--these pieces are distilled and distorted into something else entirely. Traditional melodies and tunes lie lovingly wrecked and ruined in the wake of rediscovery. It may be blasphemous to folk purists, but this odd brew is sonic heaven for heads that dream to the drone of fuzz guitar. While these recordings contain a heavy dose of the subtle sounds and textures that are distinctly "Neurot" in tenor, they are window on the inner working of Von Till's psyche--or at least some of what goes on in his private studio late at night.

L’arrivee De La Terne Mort by Gnaw Their Tongues

Gnaw Their Tongues

L’arrivee De La Terne Mort
Burning World

***Spawned from the ruins of hatred and frustration in 2005, GNAW THEIR TONGUES was created to expose a darker reality to the world through sonic nightmares. The band's sound encompasses dark ambient, black metal, doom, drone and orchestral avant-garde music, with all of these elements smeared over and under each other like the work of an imprisoned lunatic smearing his faeces all over the walls in a grotesque manifestation of filthy art. Until now four full-lengths, countless splits, EP's, vinyl only releases, cassettes, free downloads have been vomited forth to much critical acclaim. Never steering away from its original 'no boundaries' ethos, 2010 sees its fifth album being dragged into the sunlight. A terrifying and depressing horror filled abomination. Having spend time in the sewers with murderers, rapist, war atrocities and the filth of mankind, this time GTT visits even deeper wells of the ultimate saviour: DEATH. A bleak and depressing concept album, harsh, bombastic and very sinister.

***LUSTMORD’s soundtrack to the 1999 film Zoetrope. Zoetrope (1999) is an experimental avant-garde short film by music-video director Charlie Deaux. It presents a haunting, apocalyptic story of man’s metaphysical existence. Inspired by Franz Kafka’s story In the Penal Colony, the film is an attempt to transfer Kafka’s dark, nightmarish vision and gloomy atmosphere to celluloid. The film was shot by music-video cinematographer James Hawkinson. The 3D animation for the film was created by Robert Beebe. Shot on 35mm film on extremely smooth black-and-white stock, the film features dark and surreal visuals. This 18-minute work features a dark ambient soundscape by musician and sound designer Lustmord (aka BRIAN WILLIAMS) and was released on DVD in 2005 by Soleilmoon Recordings.
