***Eleven songs by J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). Recorded at his Baltimore-based studio, The Magpie Cage, between 2021 and 2022 with the assistance of Brooks Harlan (bass), Darren Zentek (drums), Gordon Withers (cello and guitar), John Haggerty (guitar) and Dave Hadley (pedal steel). J. Robbins on Basilisk: 2020 gave us the pandemic, which despite all its awfulness also gave me a lot of opportunities to write and demo music—but everyone was terrified to get into the same room together to play. Finally, around February of 2021, I called up Brooks Harlan and Darren Zentek and asked if they be down to meet me at the studio and do a 2-day session and see how it turns out. Brooks and Darren were into the idea—we were all in full cabin fever mode at that point and dying to do anything—so I sent them the demos and we did it. The musical connection had always already been there, but the energy that came from all being in the same room doing this together—something we had just spent a year wondering if we’d ever get to do again—was wonderful. It felt like having been lost in the desert, and then finding an oasis. I’ve never been so happy with a session—both the results and the experience, and the out- come was exactly what I had wanted: something more stripped down and very immediate. We were all fired up and we did a second session in March 2022. In the interim I enlisted some...

Out of Step Outtakes by Minor Threat

Minor Threat

Out of Step Outtakes
Dischord

***In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the center piece of what became the Out of Step 12" EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song "Out of Step" with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as "Cashing In", a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, "Cashing In" was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, "Addams Family" and then recorded new versions of "In My Eyes" and "Filler" to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. "Addams Family" ended up being used as a coda to "Cashing In", but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitized in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of "Addams Family". These outtakes are now being released on a 7" to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Out of Step. The 7" will be available on...

DC Special by Scream

Scream

DC Special
Dischord

***Scream formed in 1979. Drummer Kent Stacks, bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson and the brothers Pete and Franz Stahl attended school together in Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia, when they began to discover the punk and new wave scene in DC and the provocative power of making music. Like most of the punk bands in DC, they were influenced by the Bad Brains, but their rock and roll sensibilities set them apart. In 1982, they went into Inner Ear Studio with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney to record Dischord's first full length album, Still Screaming. Scream followed this with a second full length album, This Side Up, in 1984. The band toured throughout the US and were one of the first US hardcore bands to tour Europe and the UK. In 1987, they released Banging the Drum, which was recorded at both Southern Studios in London and Inner Ear. In 1988, No More Censorship was released on reggae label RAS records. Scream returned to Dischord to release Fumble in 1993. They made a few line-up changes along the way, including the addition of their friend Harley Davidson on second guitar, and, when Kent Stacks left the band to start a family, they asked a young local drummer, Dave Grohl, to take over. After a number of years with "the Scream team," Dave went on to join Nirvana and form The Foo Fighters. In 1996, at a Christmas reunion show, Kent Stacks returned as Scream’s drummer; the show was recorded and released as the...

A Brief Moment in the Sun
Dischord

***Soulside formed in Washington, DC, in 1985, split up in 1989, then reformed in 2014 and has continued playing and writing music since then. After releasing their debut album on Sammich/Dischord, they recorded Trigger (Dischord, 1988) and Hot Bodi-Gram (Dischord, 1989), which were combined on the Soon Come Happy CD in 1990. The band toured extensively in the US and Europe during these years, including groundbreaking shows in Poland and East Berlin shortly before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. In 2020, Soulside put out a new 7-inch, This Ship, their first release in 30 years, which was recorded in Prague. In late 2022, Dischord will release a 12-song Soulside album, A Brief Moment in the Sun, which was written during the heart of the coronavirus pandemic and recorded in person by J. Robbins in November 2021.

***Hammered Hulls' debut LP, Careening, may very well be the last record to be recorded and mixed at the famed Washington, D.C. area recording studio, Inner Ear. Engineered by studio owner Don Zientara and produced by Ian MacKaye, Careening was started right before the pandemic lockdown and completed in summer/fall of 2021. A new band of long-time players, Hammered Hulls' music hews close to some of their early influences. Alec MacKaye is the voice, Mark Cisneros is the guitarist, Mary Timony takes a nimble and rarely-heard turn as bassist, and Chris Wilson commands the drums. Each of them bring their individual imprint to the total sound. This concussion of strength upon strength, unified by vulnerable songs, only barely contained, is the signature sound of Hammered Hulls.

***This is the band's first new music since 1989 and was recorded during a brief run of European shows in autumn of 2019 at Jamor Studio in Prague with ONDREJ JEZEK. Formed in 1986, SOULSIDE was one of the strongest voices in the DC punk's third generation, alongside groups like Swiz and Shudder to Think. The band released a self-titled full-length on Sammich Records as well as a number of records on Dischord—the Trigger EP, the Bass/103 7", and the Hot Bodi-Gram LP—before parting ways. Anthropocosmic Nest by Messthetics, The

Messthetics, The

Anthropocosmic Nest
Dischord

***Anthropocosmic Nest is the second full-length by Washington, D.C.’s THE MESSTHETICS, who are ANTHONY PIROG (LOW WAYS QUARTET), JOE LALLY (FUGAZI) and BRENDAN CANTY (FUGAZI, DEATHFIX). Recorded at the band’s practice space throughout 2019, it’s an album that more perfectly captures the trio’s current live dynamic, complete with improvisational tangents, playful experimentation, and cathartic sprawl. When The Messthetics recorded their debut album in 2017, the trio had only done a handful of shows and had yet to fully find its footing on stage. In a way, those compositions were a template for the band that Pirog, Lally, and Canty hoped would come into being through subsequent work on the road. Since then, The Messthetics have played upwards of 200 shows across the US, Europe and Asia. Their dialog as a performing unit has necessarily focused and intensified. As a result, Anthropocosmic Nest offers a more varied vision of the band. It’s the loudest the trio has ever been and also the quietest.

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  HAMMERED HULLS are a brand new band from Washington D.C. made up of some very old connections. MARY TIMONY (bass) and ALEC MACKAYE (vocals) grew up in the same Washington neighborhood and have spent the better part of their lives in each other’s somewhat distant orbit. Always aware of each other, but never able to play together. MARK CISNEROS (guitar) has been in D.C. for more than a decade. He cut his teeth in Los Angeles listening to both Mary and Alec’s bands, but also a healthy dose of free jazz and garage. He is the man who plays everything with everyone, but this is his band. Hammered Hulls are rounded out by CHRIS WILSON (drums), a monstrous drummer with no shortage of love for all three of his bandmates. Every person in this band is a fan of every other person in this band. Mutual respect drives this train. But to say they are an odd collection of influences is to understate the point. If you tried you couldn’t imagine what this band might sound like. This single was recorded and mixed in a single day at Inner Ear studios, appropriate home to everyone in the DC scene.

Little Acts Of Destruction by Red Hare

Red Hare

Little Acts Of Destruction
Dischord

***RED HARE's roots run all the way back to the Washington D.C. music scene of the '80s and '90s, where SHAWN BROWN, JASON FARRELL and DAVE EIGHT immersed themselves in the braids and tangles of that city’s unique strain of hardcore. In 1987, Brown (the original [and current] singer of DAG NASTY) and guitarist Farrell founded SWIZ—a harsher take on melodic hardcore released via Dischord’s sister-label Sammich and their own freshly-minted label Hellfire. Eight joined Swiz on bass in 1989 and remained until the band wrapped it up in 1990. By 1995, Farrell and Eight reconvened to immerse themselves in the angular post-hardcore stylings of BLUETIP, yet found enough juice to again tap Brown for the short-lived Swiz reboot, SWEETBELLY FREAKDOWN. Meanwhile, JOE GORELICK was living a parallel existence drumming in the band GARDEN VARIETY. A fortuitous string of circumstances led him down the Jersey turnpike straight into Bluetip’s empty drum chair. Although Gorelick did not record with the band, his prowess was nonetheless noted and cataloged for future missions—first in 2002 with Farrell in RETISONIC and now with Brown, Farrell, Jason and Eight in Red Hare. Red Hare are set to release their second album Little Acts of Destruction on May 11th through a joint effort with Dischord and their own label Hellfire. Like their debut Nites of Midnite (2013) and their stop-gap 7”, Lexicon Mist (2016), the album was recorded and mixed by longtime collaborator and friend J. ROBBINS. Dischord

***Formed in Washington, D.C. in January of 2014, the EFFECTS are DEVIN OCAMPO, MATTHEW DOWLING and DAVID RICH. A multi-instrumentalist, Ocampo is a former member of the bands FARAQUET, MEDICATIONS, SMART WENT CRAZY and DEATHFIX, all of whom released music on Dischord. He has also toured and recorded with Mary Timony, Beauty Pill, and J. Robbins. Dowling was the bassist and co-leader of DELETED SCENES, while Rich was the drummer in the instrumental group, BUILDINGS. Both released music on the experimental-minded (and now defunct) local record label, Sockets. Devin met both Matt and David years before and while there had been talk of a possible collaboration everyone had their own projects at the time. However, by 2014 all were between bands and it finally made sense to get together and start something new. For the trio, playing together was a nice change in routine. It was a new configuration of musicians, rather than a recombination of old friends and former bandmates, which happens regularly in the close-knit music scene of Washington D.C. Matt and David offered a fresh perspective and (possibly) gave the Devin a nudge out of his comfort zone. Since then, the Effectshave performed sporadically throughout the East Coast and digitally released four two-song singles.

***Fumble is the fifth and final full-length by Washington, DC’s SCREAM. It features nine songs recorded in December of 1989 by ELI JANNEY at Inner Ear Studios. Formed in Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia in 1981 by brothers PETER and FRANZ STAHL, bassist SKEETER THOMPSON and drummer KENT STAX, Scream released four albums on Dischord Records. DAVE GROHL, a punk kid who grew up in nearby Springfield, VA, replaced Stax on the drums in 1986. Complete First Demo
Dischord

***When THE TEEN IDLES and THE UNTOUCHABLES split up in 1980, singer NATHAN STREJCEK and drummer DANNY INGRAM—two of the first punk kids at Wilson High—formed a new band, YOUTH BRIGADE. The duo played with a few different bass and guitar players before settling on BERT QUEIROZ (also of The Untouchables) and TOM CLINTON to complete the lineup. The band played its first show in Washington, D.C. in March of 1981 at a restaurant called Food for Thought. Just ten days later, Youth Brigade had its second gig, joining Minor Threat at the 9:30 Club as the openers for Black Flag’s first show in D.C. Youth Brigade was active for a little less than a year and released only 11 songs. Eight came out on the 1981’s Possible EP—the title a tongue-in-cheek reference to one of the first Dischord ads, where, in a list of future releases, the label mentioned a "Possible EP" by Youth Brigade. The rest were released as part of Dischord’s Flex Your Head compilation.  Complete First Demo collects eight songs that Youth Brigade recorded with DON ZIENTARA and SKIP GROFF in the summer of 1981 during its first recording session. “I Object” appeared on the 20 Years of Dischord box set and “Last Word” was included on Flex Your Head. All other material is previously unreleased. This edition of the record has been pressed on orange vinyl.

Real Lessons In Cynicism
Dischord

***Real Lessons in Cynicism is the second full-length album by Washington, DC’s SOCCER TEAM. It arrives 9 years after the band’s debut, "Volunteered" Civility and Professionalism. Why did it take so long? Moves. Jobs. Skateboarding. Friendly scuffles between those who would favor analog over digital recording styles. Look, don’t worry about it. They have crossed the finish line and that’s what matters. RYAN NELSON (BEAUTY PILL, MINUTES) and MELISSA QUINLEY formed Soccer Team in 2005. They are long-time friends who have both, at various times in the past two decades, been employees of Dischord Records. He played drums and guitar and she played bass. Each contributed vocals. In 2006, Soccer Team released “Volunteered” Civility and Professionalism, which was recorded at Nelson’s home in Southeast DC. Not long afterward, he decided to relocate to Kalamazoo, MI and the band began a multi-year hiatus. Though the project was largely dormant throughout this time, the pair was able to reunite briefly to record a three-song single, which was released on Lovitt Records in 2011. Upon Nelson’s return to the DC-area in 2012, Soccer Team reconvened and expanded to include drummer DENNIS KANE and guitarist/keyboardist JASON HUTTO (AQUARIUM, WARM SUN). The group began recording the following summer and wrapped up late last year. The record includes 14 songs that were tracked live in a basement using a Tascam 388 tape machine and then ported into a computer, where they were further tweaked and embellished. ***JAWBOX was formed in Washington, DC in 1989 by guitarist/vocalist J. ROBBINS, bassist KIM COLETTA, and drummer ADAM WADE. The trio released their debut 7” in 1990 as a split between Dischord Records and their own label, DeSoto. Over the next three years, Jawbox put out two albums and three 7” singles. Grippe, released in ’91, was the band’s first full-length. Second guitarist/singer BILL BARBOT joined the line-up in time to record ’92’s Novelty. Both albums were released on Dischord. ZACH BAROCAS took over drumming duties that same year, performing on For Your Own Special Sweetheart, which was released in 1994 on Atlantic Records.  Recorded in Hoboken, NJ with JOHN AGNELLO in winter of 1995, Jawbox was the band’s fourth and final album. If Sweetheart presented the band’s music in a straightforward and unembellished state, Jawbox found the group more open to experimentation. Arrangement-wise, it contains some of the band’s densest compositions (“Chinese Fork Tie”), but also some of its most concise and tuneful songwriting (“Excandescent”). While the basic tracks were recorded more or less live, the songs were later augmented with sounds—toy drum kit, Hammond B3 organ, and saxophone—that were outside of the band’s established palate. Long out of print, Jawbox has been remastered on LP by DAN COUTANT at Sunroom Audio and is reissued by Dischord and DeSoto Records.

First Demo by Fugazi

Fugazi

First Demo
Dischord

***BACK IN STOCK ON LIMITED BLUE VINYL!!!  Received a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork. In early January 1988 and after only ten shows, FUGAZI decided to go into Inner Ear Studio to see what their music sounded like on tape. Despite the fact that IAN, JOE, and BRENDAN, had been playing together for nearly a year, it was still early days for the band. GUY had only been a full member of Fugazi for a few months and only sang lead on one song ("Break In"). It would be nearly another year before he would start playing guitar with the band. At that time, the studio was still located in the basement of engineer DON ZIENTARA’s family house. It was a familiar space as almost all of the members of Fugazi had recorded there with their previous bands (TEEN IDLES, MINOR THREAT, DEADLINE, INSURRECTION, RITES OF SPRING, SKEWBALD, EMBRACE, and ONE LAST WISH). JOEY PICURI (aka JOEY P), who would later become one of Fugazi's longtime sound engineers, joined the band for the initial tracking. The sessions only lasted a couple of days, but tour dates and indecision about the tape would delay the final mix for another two months. Though the band was at first pleased with the results, it soon became clear that this tape would remain a demo as new songs were being written and the older songs were evolving and changing shape while the band was out on tour. It was decided that...

Soda Pop Rip-off by Slant 6

Slant 6

Soda Pop Rip-off
Dischord

***Formed in 1992, SLANT 6 was CHRISTINA BILLOTTE, MYRA POWER, and MARGE MARSHALL. Prior to forming Slant 6, Billotte had played bass in AUTOCLAVE, who released a 7" single as a collaboration between Dischord and K Records and a post-humous 10" on Billotte's label, Mira Records (both were later compiled onto a single CD by Dischord). When that band split up in 1991 the other members—Mary Timony, Nikki Chapman, and Melissa Berkoff—moved out of town and Christina went to finding a new set of collaborators in DC. While living at The Embassy—the Mount Pleasant group house that was also home to members of Nation of Ulysses—she met Myra Power, who had just moved to the area from Appalachia, and asked her to play bass while she moved over to guitar. The pair wrote a number of songs and performed their first show in the summer of 1992 on a dare from NOU bass player Steve Gamboa, who had agreed to sit in on drums. Power and Billotte would play with a few more drummers—including Rachel Carnes, of the New York City Band Kicking Giant, and James Canty—before recruiting Marge Marshall to take the gig on a permanent basis. Marshall, who was Billotte and Power’s co-worker at the restaurant Food For Thought, was a piano player, but had little experience playing drums. After only a few months of practice and playing shows, Slant 6 recorded a 3-song single, What Kind of Monster Are You, for Dischord Records. All three ended up...

Trigger / Bass-103 by Soul Side

Soul Side

Trigger / Bass-103
Dischord

***In 1985, a younger punk scene was emerging in Washington, DC around Sammich Records, a label co-founded by IAN MACKAYE’s younger sister, AMANDA MACKAYE. The label's first release was a split 7" EP called Thanks. One side featured Mission Impossible, a band from Arlington, Virginia with Dave Grohl—then a high school freshman—on drums. The other side belonged to a new band out of Wilson High School, LUNCHMEAT. Not long afterward, Lunchmeat—singer BOBBY SULLIVAN, guitarist SCOTT MCCLOUD, drummer ALEXIS FLEISIG and bassist CHRIS THOMSON—switched its name to SOUL SIDE. Within a year, Soul Side would become one of the strongest voices in the DC punk's third generation, alongside groups like Swiz and Shudder to Think. After completing a self-titled full-length—also released on Sammich—Thomson parted company with the band and JOHNNY TEMPLE joined on bass. In December, 1987, the quartet booked time at Inner Ear Studios with Ian MacKaye and DON ZIENTARA and recorded the eight song Trigger EP, Soul Side's debut release for Dischord Records. Though Soul Side initially played music that emulated the fast and heavy sound of their DC forebears, Trigger found the band evolving a more unique style, with oblique song structures and a strong reggae and hip hop influence in the rhythm section. Informed by the progressive punk culture of Revolution Summer, Sullivan's lyrics also became more politically conscious. This release compiles Trigger with the band's three-song single, Bass·103, both of which have been out-of-print on vinyl since the early '90s. The record has been remastered for...

***ORANGE VINYL PRESSING!!! After more than a decade out of print, JAWBOX’s second full-length album, Novelty, is finally back on vinyl. Novelty was recorded at Arlington, Virginia’s Inner Ear Studios in January of 1992 with producer IAIN BURGESS. The record has been remastered and recut by BOB WESTON at Chicago Mastering Studios and will be pressed onto clear-colored vinyl with revised artwork. The LP also includes a digital download coupon featuring the original album tracks plus the 2-song Tongues single. J. ROBBINS, KIM COLETTA and ADAM WADE formed Jawbox in July of 1989. Not long after, the band began to tour and record, releasing its first EP, Tools & Chrome, in 1990 as a split between Desoto and Dischord Records. Following the release of the Jawbox’s debut LP, Grippe, on Dischord in 1991, the band recruited a second guitarist, BILL BARBOT. In 1993, Jawbox left Dischord to sign with Atlantic Records, where it would release two more albums—For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Jawbox—before disbanding in 1997.

First Demo 12/29/80
Dischord

***AVAILABLE AGAIN!!! HENRY GARFIELD formed STATE OF ALERT (S.O.A) in October of 1980 with guitarist MICHAEL HAMPTON, bassist WENDEL BLOW, and drummer SIMON JACOBSEN. The band released 13 songs—three on the Flex Your Head compilation record and ten on the No Policy EP (Dischord’s second-ever release)—and performed a total of nine shows before calling it quits in July of 1981. Garfield had been a long-time friend of Dischord Records co-founder, Ian MacKaye—both worked at the Georgetown movie theater and Häagen Dazs ice cream store—and also a roadie for his band, Teen Idles. Though he was a fixture of the early DC punk scene, S.O.A would be Garfield’s first group. The band performed its first show on December 13th, 1980 at a house party with The Untouchables, Black Market Baby, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat (who were also making their debut that evening). At the time, Garfield was 19-years old and his bandmates between 15 and 16. S.O.A was in a hurry to record, so the band booked studio time with SKIP GROFF, who owned the Rockville, Maryland-based record store Yesterday and Today and who had recorded the Teen Idles’ single earlier that year. At this point, S.O.A had played only three shows—the house gig and two appearances at the Unheard of Music Festival at DC Space. This single collects the eight songs that S.O.A recorded with Groff in that first session. Two of the songs (“Disease” and “Stepping Stone Party”) were released on the Flex Your Head...

***REISSUED ON VINYL!!! Following the breakup of D.C. punk mainstay GOVERNMENT ISSUE in June, 1989, ex-GI JAY ROBBINS made the switch from bass to guitar and within a month, JAWBOX began rehearsing. By September of 1989 the band had played its first show, a sold-out housing rights benefit with local heroes Shudder to Think and Fugazi. Jawbox released its self-titled 7” debut EP in March of 1990 on the collective DeSoto label with help from Dischord Records. Grippe is Jawbox’s first full-length album, recorded with ELI JANNEY at Inner Ear Studios in October, 1990. It captures the original three-piece lineup of the band, which included Robbins, bassist KIM COLETTA, and drummer ADAM WADE. Jawbox would go on to release three more albums—Novelty, For Your Own Special Sweetheart, and Jawbox, before disbanding in 1997. This repress of Grippe, the first in over 10 years, has been recut by BOB WESTON at Chicago Mastering Service. The LP comes with a complimentary download card, which includes the complete record plus five extra songs—the four tracks from Jawbox’s self-titled debut EP and the song “Footbinder,” which first appeared on the Simple Machines compilation EP, Screw.

***PLEASE CHECK STOCK!!! DEATHFIX formed in 2009 after BRENDAN CANTY (FUGAZI) and RICH MOREL (MOREL, BLOWOFF) met while touring in Bob Mould's band. Having discovered a shared affinity for the sounds of 1972—particularly glam and progressive rock—they started getting together to work on music at Canty’s warehouse studio space. Two years later, hoping to graduate the band from its studio-shut-in phase to its live ensemble phase, they recruited DEVIN OCAMPO (FARAQUET, MEDICATIONS) and MARK CISNEROS (Medications) to hold down the rhythm section. Both talented multi-instrumentalists and producers in their own right, Cisneros and Ocampo quickly started contributing their own riffs and arrangement ideas. The band’s self-titled debut includes seven songs that were recorded throughout 2012 at Canty’s studio. During that time, Morel and Canty’s demos were torn up and expanded through extensive improv sessions alongside Ocampo and Cisneros. Tracks that started out small and introspective were blown up to a size and volume more befitting of the group’s cavernous practice space. The tone is dark, but the lyrics—which cover themes covers themes like sickness, breakups, corruption, drugs, fame, and losing ones mind—shouldn’t be read as straight biography. They’re works of fiction; character studies that just happen to touch on topics that are close to home. Deathfix will tour the U.S. throughout spring 2013 and will perform at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. LP includes a download.

***JUSTIN MOYER—aka EDIE SEDWICK, the Warhol starlet who died of a barbiturate overdose in 1971—spent much of the last decade schlepping around the globe in a wig and a dress, imparting his/her wisdom on celebrity culture to the masses. Sometimes, he brought a live band. Other nights, he made due with an iPod. But following the release of his third LP, Love Gets Lovelier Every Day, in 2011, Moyer understood that it was time to change that shit up. After all, ten years is a long time, man. Since Edie first stepped to the mic in 1999, four of Moyer’s other bands—EL GUAPO, SUPERSYSTEM, ANTELOPE and SPRCSS—came and went. Entire scenes, genres, and record labels were born and passed from this Earth. So, Edie became E.D. And the group became Moyer’s central musical outlet, rather than a side-project indulged between tours. He recruited a full-time-ish backing band, and consigned his tattered silver frock to the closet. Now, E.D. wears white. Incidentally, We Wear White is also the title of his new record. Recorded by TJ LIPPLE at Inner Ear and mixed by Trans Am’s PHIL MANLEY at his San Francisco HQ, Lucky Cat Recording, We Wear White is a more aggressive, dirtier batch of songs. In fact, the first song is called, “Dirty.” E.D.’s lyrics have drifted away from the pages of People magazine and toward topics relevant to the here and now—retro-fetishism, gentrification, and why it was totally a mistake for you to get that DC flag tattoo. It...

***RITES OF SPRING were among the most important and beloved bands to emerge from the DC underground music scene in the mid-80s. Formed by GUY PICCIOTTO (vocals/guitar), MIKE FELLOWS (bass), BRENDAN CANTY (drums), and EDDIE JANNEY (guitar) in 1984, the quartet released a self-titled LP and a 7” single before disbanding in 1986. They were central to what came to be known as 'Revolution Summer', a period of redefinition and creative burst from the DC scene in 1985. Before that—before they even played a show—the band recorded a six-song demo tape at Inner Ear with DON ZIENTARA and IAN MACKAYE. After the dissolution of their previous band, INSURRECTION, in 1983, Canty, Picciotto, and Fellows joined with FAITH guitarist Eddie Janney and began writing new songs. Unfortunately, just as they became ready to play out, Fellows announced plans to relocate to Los Angeles, effectively ending the band before it even got started. Before the bassist departed, the group decided to go to Inner Ear to document the handful of finished songs that they had written. At this point, not only had they never played a show, Rites of Spring hadn’t even settled on a name (on the tapes, Zientara listed the sessions as Insurrection II). But already, the music marked a musical shift for the DC punk community, consciously breaking away from the macho-clichés that had come to plague hardcore music. The sessions were notable for being the first time that anybody had heard Picciotto sing. At the time, few bands...

Destination: Love; Live At Cold Rice
Dischord

***REISSUED ON VINYL!!! MAKE-UP was a group which composed superior, original music, performed that music dynamically in spaces and nightclubs, and organized the performances at which they appeared across the U.S.A. and the world. These performances were characterized by the freneticism, catharsis and spirituality of what can only be described as GOSPEL YEH-YEH music. They were a total departure from the boring pantomime of rock 'n' roll as we know it, inflicting a sublime theatre on their audience which resembled a baptism, or perhaps an orgy. Their 'singer' was typically employed as a lead-chanter, while the others perpetrated a rhythmic drone on the subjects of their "Rhythm Hive". They were: on guitar, microphone and organ, JAMES CANTY; on center microphone, IAN SVENONIUS; on bass guitar and microphone, MICHELLE MAE and on the drum kit, STEVE GAMOBA. Ian, Steve and James once were part of the NATION OF ULYSSES, while Michelle took part in a project called FRUMPIES. The three were from Washington, DC while the one was from Olympia, Washington, but they formed in February 1995 to present their international vision to a world they are sure is steeped in stultifying cynicism. The band played its first show in the spring of 1987 at d.c. space in Washington, DC. Ignition played for three years and toured extensively, including a long European trip, making them one of the first Dischord bands to play overseas. Their shows were chaotic and unpredictable, with one ending before the band had finished even a single song after Chris smashed his guitar and amp in a fit of frustration. This is possibly the shortest set ever played by a DC band.
