Highest Strangeness by Drugs Dragons

Drugs Dragons

Highest Strangeness
Dusty Medical

***The best of Milwaukee's worst!!! Drugs Dragons have drawn out another menacing LP from the sewers under Wisconsin's largest metro area. Packed with tales of gruesome abdication, seductive deprogramming and woeful cries of existence, HIghest Strangeness conjures images of horror driven by halting punk guitar, thunderboy bass, and caustic percussion surrounded by vocalist El Chappelle's caterwaul tantrums. Recorded in the basement of MotorCo Studios away from the sunlight and Mastered in the basement of Mystery Room mastering, also away from the sunlight. Pressed on black vinyl like the content of our souls. Recommend for fiends of: Butthole Surfers, Early Alice Cooper band, Can, Hawkwind, Sagger, Crime.

***“In these troubled and tumultuous times, the city of Milwaukee—nay, the entire world—needs the PLATINUM BOYS more than ever. The hard-rocking, hard-partying group has been a fixture of the local scene since 2013, preaching the virtues of, well, hard-rocking and hard-partying. Every time a can of High Life or PBR cracks open, the Platinum Boys will be there. Every time someone steps out in a cowboy hat and cutoff shorts, the Platinum Boys will approve. Every time your week needs a shot of good-natured mischief, the Platinum Boys will do their thing. Often at High Dive.”—Matt Wild (Milwaukee Record)

Cowboy Songs EP by Midwives

Cowboy Songs EP
Dusty Medical

***MIDWIVES are a four-piece hardcore punk band based in Milwaukee. Forming in June 2013, the band released their debut 7" in early 2014 via Direct Current Records. After following up with a 10 song LP earlier this year, here we are with their first Dusty Medical release, a 7" entitled Cowboy Songs. Engineered and mixed by SHANE HOCHSTETLER and mastered by JUSTIN PERKINS, Cowboy Songs finds the band continue their development of short and intense songwriting, its five songs clocking in at just a little over 8 minutes. Late '70s and early '80s hardcore punk is a clear influence here, but echoes of post punk and noise rock are present as well. For fans of: The Stooges, Nation of Ulysses, Pissed Jeans.

***BIRDS OF PARADISE pay homage to the great songwriters such as Lee Hazlewood, Leonard Cohen, Jason Molina and Townes Van Zandt. The songs are blues, pop rock and folk based, with electro-acoustic soundscapes and electronics. Their sound captures the dreamy atmosphere of '50s era pop and country music, yet could only be made in a contemporary setting. It is as if there is a ghost in the machine, and this ghost is love. After having played and recorded together for about three years under the moniker RED MASS, ROY VUCINO (also of SEXAREENOS, CPC GANGBANGS, PYPY) and HANNAH LEWIS now embark on a road trip with no end in sight. A dobro guitar, a micro korg, two small amps and a sampler that they can plug into their generator in the back of the car allows the project to tour with simple means like some of its earlier blues and folk heroes. They've already played shows in Istanbul and plan to bring their gospel to folks everywhere. Edition of 250 on black vinyl.

***The truly amazing thing about Milwaukee’s DRUGS DRAGONS is how close they come to distilling the essence of “rock” into recording. Live, they’re intense and unpredictable. Sweat, blood, whiskey, and beer appear in equal measure at their shows, and, like all good rock bands, volume is a necessary ingredient. Their new LP, II & I/II, is easily the equal of their live performance. Capturing the energy and vitriol of vocalist PUKE DRUGS’ sweaty snarl, as well as TONY SAGGER’s alternately brutal and psychedelic guitar part. Tony also handled bass duties on the album, and drums are courtesy of the reliable ERRORIC MILDEW.

***Whatever image that the name SPACE RAFT might conjure up for you, just forget it. They are not specifically a psych band, or a retro-glam outfit, or a blatant '70s throwback. They are, instead, a classically brilliant pop-rock combo which incorporates elements of all the above while working by their own rules, beholden to no genre. /Space Raft/, their debut album, is proof positive of this. Formed in 2012 by ex-MYSTERY GIRLS guitarist JORDAN DAVIS, former TEMPER TEMPER keyboardist TJAY CHRISTENSON, FATHER PHOENIX drummer TYLER CHICOREL who currently handles bass duties for the equally awesome CALL ME LIGHTNING) and GOODNiGHT LOViNG bassist COLIN SWINNEY, the band currently includes bassist SRINI RADHAKRISHNA (CIRCLES, FOOTBALL, FRANCE HAS THE BOMB), following Swinney's departure to California. The camaraderie amongst Space Raft's members is obvious upon listening to their music; there is a definite interplay between all of them that contributes to a fully-formed vision. Healthy helpings of melody, rhythmic diversity, and intriguing instrumentation make their self-titled debut LP a constantly shifting, magical entity. There's an almost science-fiction element to many of their songs, such as “Jupiter Calling” and “Anything is Possible,” which is completely in line with the effects-laden guitar lines and washes of keyboard. However, Space Raft can abruptly shift gears into songs such as “We Are Not Alone” or “Rescue Mission,” which are pop at its finest. Diversity is the key to Space Raft, a quality which, unfortunately, is sadly lacking in many modern bands. No Export to Europe.

***Italian heartthrobs MISS CHAIN & THE BROKEN HEELS return once again to American shores. After four singles that sold out in a flash, an album for one of the most prestigious power-pop labels already in its second pressing, rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, two US tours and lots of dates all across Europe, Miss Chain & The Broken Heels return with The Dawn. Having already sold out of the first pressing on Austria's Bachelor Records, the album now sees a US vinyl release here on Dusty Medical. The Dawn stems from the common effort of the band together with producer PIERLUIGI BALLARIN (The R's) at T.U.P. Studio in Brescia (Italy). Two weeks of live recordings on tape to capture the joy of experimenting in a studio yielded a perfect blend of warm, thick and surrounding sound: it is a complex record that deploys a vast array of sounds, so deep that sometimes you find yourself drifting away with your eyes closed, totally immersed in a mixture of country, rhythm'n'blues, pop and Beatlesesque melodies, surrounded by dreamy landscapes, sometimes even bordering on psychedelia. References to Sixties melodies and sunshine pop are the ideal framing for a record whose sound and content is at the same moment timeless and steeped in the contemporary, the soundtrack to an internal journey which contemplates life and its baggage but it's not afraid of its dark corners. Limited to 300 copies.

***Forming in 1998 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, THE MISTREATERS played their first show that New Year's Eve. Over the next few years they built a reputation as one of the Midwest's most celebrated underground rock and roll bands due to an explosive live show and relentless touring. The band released a 7" in 1999 on Buffalo, NY's Big Neck Records, and their debut full length for the same label the following year. They released several more singles on labels like Flying Bomb (Michigan), Goodbye Boozy (Italy) and Yakisakana (France). Cross country treks and appearances at the Rust Belt Revolt, Horizontal Action Blackout and South By Southwest solidified the band's following and in 2003 the legendary Estrus Records released their sophomore album. That year also saw the band make their maiden voyage to Europe. Over the next few years, more singles and another trip to Europe followed, and the band released a live LP on guitarist KEVIN MISTREATER’s label Dusty Medical Records. On December 30, 2011 the band played their final live show, at Milwaukee's Cactus Club. A few months prior, they got together to record the last 4 songs from their repertoire—songs written when the band was still playing regularly but had not gotten down on tape. These songs form the nucleus of their swan song The Mistreaters—a compilation of hard-to-find 7" and compilation tracks, as well as a couple other previously unreleased songs. At 26 songs in all, this collection spans the band's entire career, going back all the way...

***Rock'n'roll is an elusive beast; only a small percentage of those who attempt to harness it can even come close. Rock isn't about selling out Madison Square Garden, it's about getting a room full of people to believe in what you're doing; to subscribe to your version of the gospel. The truly amazing thing about Milwaukee, WI's DRUGS DRAGONS is how close they come to distilling the essence of "rock" into a recording. Live, they're intense and unpredictable. Sweat, blood, and beer appear in equal measure at their shows, and, like all good rock bands, volume is a necessary ingredient. Astoundingly, The Milorganight EP is easily the equal of their live performance, capturing the energy and vitriol of vocalist PUKE DRUGS’ sweaty snarl, as well as guitarist TONY SAGGER’s chunky chording and the on-the-edge rhythm section of bassist ZORACH DRAGONS and drummer ERRORIC MILDEW. Drugs Dragons formed in spring 2009 from the remnants of Milwaukee's beloved NIGHT TERRORS. Although their stated influences range from early Alice Cooper, the Cramps and the Dead Boys to such modern icons as Clone Defects and the A-Frames, Drugs Dragons have forged their own path among the two million or so bands currently active. They're not interested in climbing the charts; they want to get in your face. And this record will do exactly that. Coming fresh off the release of their Dusty Medical Records' debut (following a pair of 7" releases on their own Terror Trash label) this EP is set to take the...

To All The Good People by Red Mass

Red Mass

To All The Good People
Dusty Medical

***RED MASS is the brainchild of ROY VUCINO of CPC GANGBANGS and LES SEXAREENOS fame, but functions more as a collaborative art project meets doomsday cult. Releasing scores of material at a near constant pace without sacrificing quality or originality, Red Mass serves up new directions in current rock n roll from mind blowing psych, trashcan free-jazz, electronic infused punk, and just about anything else Mr. Vucino can throw into a song. On this Dusty Medical 7-inch, Red Mass looks backwards with the excellent A-side "To All the Good People," finding common ground between his previous bands while updating the sound to kick a hole in today's mutating sonic wasteland. The B-side, "The Truth About Baby Jane," is a weirdly atmospheric and psychedelic piece buzzing with bizarre electronic noises perfect for late night paranoia or early morning shame. Like all Red Mass releases to date, this record is essential to anyone navigating the historical river of true modern rock n roll as it pioneers into strange new territories. Edition of 500 copies.

***Dusty Medical records proudly serves up another Brew City classic with the debut 7-inch from STICKS N STONES. Founded after the untimely demise of TUFF BANANAS, Sticks N' Stones includes core members PAUL KALFAHS and JON HEIBLER of CATHOLIC BOYS and NATALIE CLARK of THE TEARS playing an insanely catchy take on the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s American power pop exemplified by Cheap Trick, Shoes or The Nerves, that sticks in your mind like candy melted to the bench you just sat on. The A side "Red Light," with its guitar power chord crunch, full, bouncy bass and danceable drums, comes on like a forgotten roller rink jam or classic theme song to a B-grade retro teenage comedy, while the flipside "Time Change" mines similar nostalgic territory with wistful longings for the simplicity of the past. This debut is a scorcher, anyone wise enough to add this to their collection will be eagerly awaiting the next record's worth of hyper, sugar-glazed pop. Edition of 500 copies.
