Ghost Ramp

Our last record, The Unlawful Trade Of Greco-Roman Art, took us forever to write and record. It was about two years to write and six months to record. We didn't want to do that again so we tried to write it way faster this time. I think it took less than a year to write and we recorded, mixed, and mastered it with our dear friend, Pat Hills at Earth Tone studio, in a month. We finished it a year ago and we expected it to be released on Honor Press, the label that put out our first album. Things were up in the air for a long time and we didn't know what was happening or if it was going to get released and finally, it all fell apart, but sweet Patrick came to the rescue and graciously offered to release our little rock and roll album on Ghost Ramp. Working with Patrick is rad, but you already know that.   As far as making the record, we were definitely less focused on a specific sound when we were writing this. We wanted the last one to be cold and digital sounding and really harsh to listen to, which I think it is. It's exhausting. This one is pretty harsh too, but we also allowed ourselves to kind of do whatever we wanted as long as all three of us liked it and it was fun to play. That's why there are some quieter songs and it's not...

In Oct. 2014, a two-track 7” heralded the arrival of the smog-soaked pop trio Spirit Club. Nearly two years later, the group is stepping out of the haze and into the sun for their second full-length record, Slouch.  Composed of Nathan Williams (Wavves/Sweet Valley), Kynan Williams (Sweet Valley/Safe In Hell) and Andrew Caddick (Jeans Wilder), Spirit Club formed during the summer of 2014. The childhood friends were reconnecting after several years apart and Caddick, coming out of a rough break-up, sent Nathan a song demo that was originally intended for another project. Nathan and Kynan enjoyed the track and asked to help Caddick, which would ultimately lead to the first Spirit Club single, “Eye Dozer.” “We didn’t have any aspirations,” says Caddick, “but we found very quickly that we made a very cohesive unit.” By the following spring, Spirit Club had released its debut LP, Spirit Club, via Nathan Williams’ Ghost Ramp label. The self-titled record drew considerable acclaim. Exclaim praised Spirit Club’s “cerebral and experimental” pop inclinations, while Stereogum drew attention to the album’s “queasy psychedelic sensibility.” The 405 compared the group’s songs to “the orange glow of summer dusk,” while noting the potential for an “incredible” follow-up record. Slouch, Spirit Club’s sophomore full-length effort, is the result of three pop auteurs coming together and hitting their stride in sync. The album almost sounds lost-in-time, blurring the lines between old and new, familiar and exploratory. Packed with stunning vocal harmonies, earworm hooks and some of the best songwriting...

“Here’s the great thing about Fat Tony & Kyle Mabson, neither one are afraid of switching it up. One is a Nigerian goofball from Third Ward whose most famous single also has video with him as a baby in a shopping cart. The other is a LA DIY wiz whose kept electronic sounds in his back pocket everyday. Together, they’re Charge It To The Game, a duo that’s so old school and retro, they’re releasing their debut project on a tape. Sadly, Charge It To The Game isn’t the name of the duo’s album, that honor belongs to Urban Hall of Fame. But, any album from them, regardless of title should be a fun ride if the self-titled single is any indicator. Fat Tony is literally rapping some of his most diabolical lines here, able to make “cripples still krump” and delivering all with a deadpan deliver to show he’s ULTRA SERIOUS about this shit.”—Day & A Dream

Steep Leans is the project of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Gray Somers. Developed in late 2012 after the trauma of a death in the family caused Somers to pack up and leave everything behind, going from Boston for New York City, leaving behind a long term relationship, which consequently left him drifting broke and alone in Brooklyn. As a way out of the turmoil, he sold his car and used the money to start the original recordings of Grips On Heat with Jonny Schenke (of Eaters, producer of Parquet Courts Light Up Gold Fame).  Steep Leans began to gain some promising momentum that was quickly foiled as a troubled relationship, constant moving, and lack of stability took its toll. Even the original recordings guided by Schenke were lost. All of this loss left Gray with a clean slate, on home turf and he took advantage.   He immediately put together a live band, and began playing shows around the Boston area. This band took on various members over the last two years, with the most instrumental members being John Brown (World Cup, who Somers plays bass for) and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Eddleston.  Soon after, in the Summer of 2013, Somers, along with Eddleston and Brown, went back into the studio with engineer/producer Shaun Curran in Somerville, MA to begin recording what would become Grips On Heat. The recording process was an intensely cathartic experience, which led to many long sleepless nights, where songs were in a constant...

Gracie has essentially one goal: maintaining complex harmonies within a simple presentation. This involves a number of distinctly different styles and approaches, melded with the songwriting stylings of leader Gracie Jackson. Citing pulp surf and dreamy girl group music-Gracie wants to sound like a ghost. She focuses on guitar driven music with rhythm and vocal harmony taking precedence over lead lines. These songs (often called 'bummer jams') take a more melancholic approach, with low tunings and strong-man drums pushing the sound forwards. This band is full of strong men. Gracie's self-titled debut album will be released September 18th via Nathan Williams' Ghost Ramp imprint.

***“Meet BIRTH DEFECTS, your new favorite garage rock band. No seriously, this band is basically the Justice League of garage rock. These dudes have a lot working in their favor—they've got PETEY DAMMIT from THEE OH SEES, former BLEACHED drummer JONATHAN SAFLEY, and have a new album produced by TY SEGALL being released on NATHAN WILLIAMS’ (WAVVES) record label, Ghost Ramp.”—Nosiey / Vice

No Life For Me is the highly anticipated collaborative album between Nathan Williams of Wavves and Dylan Baldi of Cloud Nothings via Williams’s own imprint, Ghost Ramp. The album was recorded at Williams’s home during sessions in March and June of 2014, with production from Sweet Valley.  “For all their differences, a Wavves / Cloud Nothings collaboration makes a good deal of sense, and fans have been eagerly anticipating an album since it was officially announced back in March…. [The album] is a summery slice of punk that’s more SoCal than Ohio, even if Baldi can’t help but smear his unique brand of melancholy all over standout tracks like ‘Nervous’ and ‘Nothing Hurts’…. “No Life For Me is deeply indebted to early 1980s Southern California punk, a scene that’s probably buried deep in the soil of Williams’ mind by this point…. This is pop music executed with the no-frills precision of hardcore….” —Consequence of Sound

***SPIRIT CLUB is NATHAN WILLIAMS (WAVVES), ANDREW CADDICK (JEANS WILDER), and JOEL WILLIAMS (SWEET VALLEY). Brothers Joel and Nathan, alongside childhood best friend Andrew make music about loss that frays at the seams. Soaring harmonies over sludgy guitars and lush production create a sound all their own.
