Using cheap amps, cheap mics, and cheap tricks, Seth Sutton has created a fantastic and fascinating body of work as Useless Eaters. Taking his name from a snotty Vomit Pigs track from a snotty Killed By Death compilation, Sutton has aligned himself with the losers, the forgotten, and the never-were-knowns of "back in the day." Think Legionaires Disease, or The Trend, or Tampax, or Unnatural Axe--all fantastic bands content to dwell in the gutter, spewing out noxious, humorous, untamed punk rock with cheap and nasty equipment. Barely out of high school, Sutton has absorbed all the lessons of punk rock's first thirty years and avoided the traps of sentimentality, phoniness, and the urge to impress anyone outside of the band. Useless Eaters hate fashion, hate proficiency, hate snobbery, and probably hate you. Singles on Jay Reatard's Shattered Records, Italy's Goodbye Boozy, and other obscure vinyl outposts worldwide are spreading the sound. Useless Eaters are the real deal. Get in on it now, and share the secret. Or don't--Useless Eaters really don't care.

Things Are Not Alright by Cococoma

Cococoma

Things Are Not Alright
Goner

Things Are Not All Right is the second album on Goner from the Chicago bash-and-crash pop trio CoCoComa. Comprised of husband-and-wife Bill and Lisa Roe on drums and guitar, respectively, plus Mike Fitzpatrick on bass and organ, the band is part garage, part psych pop, and all pure punk energy. Things Are Not All Right takes the catchy, spazzy push of their first album and adds depth and more realized production values without slowing down in the least.  "CoCoComa's songs sound rowdy and loose--the band's reckless, infectious enthusiasm makes them feel like they could run off the rails at any time, even on a recording." --Miles Raymer, Chicago Reader  "If the carnival had a carousel that had vibrating rockets instead of bobbing ponies, Rumplemintz and PBR instead of Icees, and roller coasters that rattled more than the Cyclone in a hurricane, then the music wouldn't just be a pipe organ wheezing calliope music--it'd be the fucked-up, off-the-rails, fast-as-you-can pumping of CoCoComa. Start with the guitar / drum spazzing of Bill and Lisa Roe, whirl in a mad dash of Mike Fitzpatrick's organ anchor, coat with Bill's shredding lead vocals, sprinkle with the "whoah-oh-oh"s and group shouting that only comes with the unabashed embracing of being sweaty and dirty for the sake of a good time, and you've got CoCoComa." --RCRDLBL.com  "CoCoComa is a record begging to be run to, climbed to, moved to, destroyed to." --Coke Machine Glow

***BACK IN STOCK!!! In a world where indie pop music has gone murky and mopey, songs by garage bands are used to sell cars on TV, and real punk rock is in hiding, it's nice to find a band that didn't get the memo. Of course, they are from Australia. Eddy Current Suppression Ring is four guys who worked together at a vinyl pressing plant in Melbourne and decided to start a band at the company Christmas bash after-party. Live practice tapes soon developed into sold-out singles and increasingly packed shows, and Eddy Current Suppression Ring grew into a uniquely sincere and simple band that creates increasingly indefinable music. Yes, there are discernible influences: The Stooges, Can, The Fall, or Devo. But they don't sound like any of those bands--or anyone else, for that matter.  In 2008, Goner released Primary Colours, Eddy Current Suppression Ring's second album, in North America to widespread critical acclaim. This is their debut that never made it out of Australia. A perfect companion piece for Primary Colours, their self-titled album is filled with all the elements that made Colours so great: razor-sharp guitar, rumbling bass, rat-a-tat drums, and lead singer Brendan Suppression's heavily accented squawk. Take it for a spin. "Three-plus decades after the initial dispensation, one more punk band out of the blue (Melbourne, but it could be anywhere in the English-speaking world) does the same thing punk bands have always done, only not exacsdtly, plus it sounds like they just thought of it...

The Magic Kids are a mysterious band of pop pranksters from Memphis featuring members of The Barbaras and Girls of the Gravitron who, after they're banished from the kingdom, discover a secret bohemian forest shanty. There, they work tirelessly to create the magical sound that will lift the spell and grant them entrance back into the castle. The Kids channel Jan and Dean, Brian Wilson, and Phil Spector for Hey Boy, their first single. Will it be enough to appease the King and his court? Only time will tell. "These guys seem much too young to cram this much boy/girl-group-three-part-harmony-wall-of-sound-Phil-Spector-reloading madness into one song, but I guess that's the way they raise them in Memphis these days. Whether or not they've lived it, they've heard it, and ultimately that's half the battle. If you can't score the movie playing in your head to this song, consider getting a new movie." --RCRD LBL  "One of the many bands that made a big impression on folks at SXSW this past week was Memphis, TN's the Magic Kids. This multi-member band seems like an educated bunch on 'Hey Boy.' Riffing on the '60s pop songbook, they lift the micro-orchestrations of Phil Spector or Brian Wilson for a wall-of-sound led by a Mike Love-like lead vocal, some skronking horn, and some delectable three-part harmonies." --Exclaim!

Alice And Friends by Box Elders

Box Elders

Alice And Friends
Goner

Box Elders is the brainchild of brothers Clayton and Jeremiah McIntyre, who began making music in Friday night goof-off sessions that originally featured their mom on drums. Adopting a name from the bugs that infested their house, they started gigging around Omaha, Nebraska, and soon added drummer Dave Goldberg, who signed on after catching the band at a free performance in a local park. Rather than search for a fourth band member, the McIntyres suggested Goldberg play both drums and organ simultaneously. It took some practice. In January 2008, Box Elders released their debut 7-inch on Grotto Records and spent much of the year touring the USA. The fuzzy, off-kilter pop of the record caught the attention of Memphis, Tennessee's Goner Records and earned them a slot at the label's annual music festival, Goner Fest, as well as a spot on the Goner roster, alongside acts ranging from Guitar Wolf and Jay Reatard to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ty Segall, and Reigning Sound. As soon as they returned to Omaha, Box Elders began working on their first full-length, Alice and Friends, named after their favorite cult-run vegan Korean BBQ joint. Featuring fourteen tracks and cover art drawn by Michael Gruber, Alice and Friends is destined to be one of the most-talked about debuts of 2009. "Crackles with a kind of rambunctious, infectious pop energy you just can't fake.... One of the most impressive bands at this year's SXSW festival." --Tripwire

It’s Getting Hot by No Comply

No Comply

It’s Getting Hot
Goner

It's Getting Hot from Memphis's No Comply is a ferocious debut based in brutal '80s / '90s hardcore like Copout and Born Against. These recordings feature Angry Bob, ex-Deathreat, on bass, a spot currently occupied by Joe T, ex-Rat Traps. Drummer Tony was in Left For Dead and Blank Is Born. South by Southwest appearances and regional shows have built an underground buzz in hardcore circles. Frontman Matt "Pappy" Johnson revists a vocal attack worthy of John Brannon (Negative Approach, Laughing Hyenas, Easy Action), guaranteed to run off cute-punks and their mall-clothed friends at every show. For those who can't keep their fingers away from the sockets...

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Burying '60s sing-alongs and dance crazes beneath waves of reverb and giddy thud, Ty Segall has carved out his own shelf in the San Francisco neo-psych garage alongside local compatriots and collaborators Sic Alps and Thee Oh Sees. After shattering the Bay Area underground as a frantic one-man band that was devoured by the local press, Segall has now given up the solo act for a three-piece group that destroys sonic and melodic boundaries with manic glee. This new live setup is a better reflection of his studio work.  As an exploration of the space between Cro-Magnon fuzz and atmospheric acoustic psych, Lemons is the natural next step after his celebrated self-titled 2008 debut on Castle Face. "Look out Jay Reatard, this Bay Area one-man band has even scuzzier static in his garage." --SPIN

***JACK OBLIVIAN has developed a cult following exploiting everything that makes rock and roll great—raw inept punk, lo-fi blues, distorto pop, rot-gut soul, fuzz-drenched twang... His story started in the ‘90s as a member of the COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS and THE OBLIVIANS, but Yarber has honed his craft on his five solo records since. Disco Outlaw is his first album on Memphis label Goner Records. "Yarber clearly knows his way around a catchy chorus, a memorable melody, and a mean guitar lick. In the end, these songs succeed in their simplicity and exquisite lack of bullshit."—Dusted

Live At Goner Records by Reigning Sound

Reigning Sound

Live At Goner Records
Goner

It all happened on a rainy afternoon in June, 2005, at the Goner Shop. Following a sweaty Saturday night gig at Memphis’ favorite dive bar, The Buccaneer, Reigning Sound sets up in front of a roomful of hungover heathens and blazes through fifteen-and-a-half pounders, including covers of The Sham’s “Black Sheep,” The Swingin’ Yo-Yo’s’ “Do Something,” and of course, Carl Perkins’ “Tennessee.” Scream with shock and delight as Greg Cartwright gets electrocuted during a Compulsive Gamblers song! Originally released as a limited-edition CDR to raise funds for Katrina victims in late ’05, and nationally on vinyl the next year, the LP has been out of print for over half a decade. This new pressing includes a complimentary digital download. It’s a document of an amazing band and an amazing show, in glorious full fidelity. It’s Reigning Sound: Live at Goner Records!

Too Thirsty 4 Love by Quintron

Too Thirsty 4 Love
Goner

***"The tenth full length QUINTRON record and the first to be released on legendary Memphis label Goner Records. It's about fucking time. This album was recorded entirely live in a bizarre 2-track studio set deep in the heart of New Orleans’ now famous 9th Ward. The live tracks were then played back and sung over. Lets call this the ‘6th grade bedroom style’ of multi-tracking. For any interested equipment nerds, the Spellcaster Lodge studio consists of 4 microphones, one custom Neotek Series 1 board, and a 2 track tape deck. And a corkscrew. Quintron's musical partner MISS PUSSYCAT plays maracas and sings backup as well as entertaining all age groups with her highly amusing technicolor puppet shows. She has just recently finished filming a 10-episode puppet drama called Trixie And The Tree Trunks for VBS (Vice) TV.”

***In 2002 DIGITAL LEATHER were two young men playing keyboards: DL Mastermind SHAWN FOREE and RYAN WONG (Destruction Unit, Tokyo Electron, Reatards). Electronic karate chops and drill sergeant drum simulators created fuzzed out synth punk at warehouse punk shows to punk rock kids that hated keyboards and hated Digital Leather. They then had their faces melted. Several similar shows played a role, directly or indirectly, in shaping an underground music revolution. Flash forward several years—and Digital Leather has become a shape shifting force in the new "it" genre of synth punk. With a handful of sold out singles and LPs under his leather jock strap, Shawn Foree is now preparing his magic wand for the masses. He's traded his synthesizer for a guitar, and Ryan Wong for a full band. He's still recording songs himself in a bedroom in Arizona. He brings his band and the a disc of recordings to Memphis for Gonerfest 2, then drops a sonic A-bomb of a set at the Buccaneer Lounge in the middle of the afternoon. Luckily it is all captured on multi-track by a crack guerilla recording team. Home recordings from that time become Side A to Sorcerer; Side B is the live recording. Layered synthetic sounds come together with stark beats and dry vocals to create a lonely mechanical epic that reminds us of man's impending doom. Chillingly delicate and abrasively aggressive, Sorcerer masterfully negotiates the spaces between minimal electronic music and ferocious synth punk.

Goner

The much-anticipated third album from Atlanta pop-edged punkers THE CARBONAS. “A taut, brilliant blast of both pop and punk. Given the record's running time, there's 'nary a wasted moment, riff or breath, as the band crams in a host of late-'70s/early-'80s Antipodean and East Coast rock influences, and strains those sounds through the Carbonas' distinctively greasy Southern sonic filter.”—Bob Mehr, Commercial Appeal
