Call Of The Knife by Chain Whip

Chain Whip

Call Of The Knife
Neon Taste

***"At some point it becomes clear to all of us that trying to navigate life on The Darkest Timeline is pretty heavy going. Politics, economics, human rights… all that grown-up stuff you have to worry about as an adult. Turns out they’ve all been surrendered to ideological grifting and cynical culture wars, which should be enough to make you pretty fkn furious. And you know what? We’re gonna need a soundtrack to this that sounds equally pissed off; something loud, fast and ‘orrible that gives you the impetus to finally drive that bulldozer through the cop shop. In case you hadn’t guessed where this was going, please welcome the grand, timely and thoroughly welcome return of Chain Whip. Straight out of the gate, their second full-length Call Of The Knife is absolutely raging. The opening title track might have you squinting at the turntable for a couple of seconds to check that someone hasn’t reanimated the young Circle Jerks, but as soon as frontman Josh Nickel’s voice kicks in, hardcore cognoscenti will be under no illusions that they could possibly be listening to anyone else. His voice is a righteous, gravelly roar that cuts straight through the noise with the very loose subtext ‘I’m having a bad day and it’s imperative that you know about it’. There’s a vitality to it that helps make these Vancouver boys one of the best bands in punk today, and it helps that he’s backed up by a rattling, rolling collective who remind us...

More Than A Nightmare by Extensive Slaughter

Extensive Slaughter

More Than A Nightmare
Neon Taste

***Completely scorched-earth Crust. Extensive Slaughter blasted into the Vancouver scene with members playing in some of the best current Death Metal and Hardcore acts. Taking their moniker from UK Crust royalty, Excrement Of War, they’ve been the reason to get to the gig early for the last few months. For fans of Cotärd, Languid, Disclose, Disfear. First pressing of 400 on black vinyl.

***Headcheese' sophomore LP is 12 tracks of piss-pants frustration mocking loss prevention officers, moronic militias and certain label heads. Irreverent smashes of furious punk that doesn't give a shit what brand your leather jacket might be or how old your Black Flag tattoo is. What makes them so fucking insufferable is what is also the best part about them. They sound like what they are. This isn't fly-by-night garage pop that sticks around like half chewed gum to your shoes. It's turbulent, aggressive hardcore that's very likely to pull the ceiling tiles down out of your basement show and piss in the corner.

***From the darkest corners of Drew Owen's (Sick Thoughts, Total Hell) mind come these 6 tracks of Metal Mayhem. The recording was called forth from the stinking city streets of New Orleans and released as a cassette in the witching hours of 2022 but we knew this rot had to be released on proper vinyl format and we're happily risking damnation to do it. Fans of Transylvanian Hunger or the 7" period of Midnight will surely be pleased with this festering mess. Metal-Punk with no Motorhead riffing in sight. Just seething, horny darkness.

***Recorded after an insane Euro tour in 22 with the Autobahns which repeatedly brought "THE BOX" to the edge of heartattack, they recorded this hot mess of a debut LP almost immediately afterwards. This direct, tight power really comes through especially via the rythmsection who are just the most handsome and nicest guys in rpck today—FELIX of POKY and AMBULANZ and "MANGEL-ANGEL" DENES aka DEE BEE RICH who plays in every band in Germany including LIIEK and ONKELZ. An eager Youtube troll commented "this sounds exactly like the people who play in this band.", which either means LAFFF BOX sounds like 4 white cis-dudes from East Germany or refers to the other bands they play with, which on top of the ones above are EX-WHITE & VERRÄTER for JOANS and LASSIE for MARIAN. Well make of it what you want it's fast and modern ( but without synths ) Punk with rocking sometimes Thin Lizzy style double guitars. Lots of crew shout double vocals also. Let it melt ya face off buddy.

***Total Rock 'n' Roll Annihilation. Ferment Pagans, Carbonas and The Rings in the minds of some maladjusted Ontarians and you shouldn't be too surprised to hear them come up with something as svelte as this. Originally released as a limited run cassette, we demanded that it get the proper treatment and knew that it had a home on Neon Taste. There are plenty of self-proclaimed "Rock n Roll" bands running around under the moniker that have never even heard of Sonny Vincent. One more injustice in a brutal and undeserving world. At least Anxious Pleasers can be counted among the modern-day heroes that keep that pure fire alive. We're here to set the record straight. Rock 'n' Roll is alive and well. Consider this testimonial.

Lick The Boot, Lose Your Teeth: EPs by Bootlicker

Bootlicker

Lick The Boot, Lose Your Teeth: EPs
Neon Taste

***Compiling all EPs by Bootlicker, Lick The Boot, Lose Your Teeth presents 24 tracks originally released over four 7"s dating back to 2017. From the earliest incarnation of the band and the start of their signature production and sound to where they are now. With the overblown martial drumming, completely pinned clean guitar attack, Bootlicker has been a fresh take on D-Beat tradition with a handful of Oi/UK82 and American Hardcore influence on the side. Each 7" is compiled here and represents a different phase of the band. The completely broken speaker aggression of "Who Do You Serve", the slight Rock 'n' Roll influenced "Nuclear Family" and bare bones approach of the "Six Track E.P." all paved the way to a more realized sound in "How To Live Life". Instead of tracking down each out of print, individual E.P. Here they are for the taking. Neon Taste Records in North America. Static Shock Records in Europe.

***It's 2021 and Vancouver’s Bootlicker are back with their first full length. Experimenting with various lineups and sounds since 2017, these 14 original tracks flesh out their most realized expression. Following four EP’s and two demos, their self-titled debut stays true to the noise cultivated in the previous offerings. That raw, blown-out production countered with clean guitar sound and Internationally-informed take on a UK82 delivery remains. Everything that made the band what they were on their previous output is polished into a ball of fire that will not be contained. Their mid-tempo, menacing posture of tracks like "Herd The Sheep" and "State Of Fever" give way to the D-beat totality of "Master" or "Two Faced" proving there are still ideas in the tank. There won’t be much left but scorched earth by the time it comes to rest. FFO: Mau Maus, Discharge, SSD.

Two Steps To Hell by Chain Whip

Chain Whip

Two Steps To Hell
Neon Taste

***Six tracks of Vancouver, BC hardcore. Chain Whip formed in 2018 with the sole intention of playing their favorite blend of hardcore punk. Part KBD, part California beach, part grimy Vancouver. This 12" E.P. finds the band in a faster, more furious mode with five original tracks written and recorded in the height of the 2020 Pandemic. 3 tracks are re-recorded and polished versions from their 2020 Demo (being pressed on LP RIGHT NOW by No Spirit in Germany) while the others are brand new Chain Whip recordings. The final track, Death Was Too Kind was written by Brian Goble and recorded by the Subhumans.

Silencio Absoluto by Cotard

Cotard

Silencio Absoluto
Neon Taste

***San Luis Potosí's Cotärd have been shovelling the grime in Mexico since their initial inception back in 2018. They've established themselves as major players in the Mexican, DIY Punk Scene booking tours, driving bands and playing a perfected '90s style Swedish/UK, D-Beat/Crust. This new, 4 Track EP finds them laying into their particular blend of the dark and dismal and is their first release since their 2020 Demo and in their most focused and punishing form. The winded exasperations call back to the vocal stylings of classics like Doom and the musical D-Beat/Crust attack reminiscent of juggernauts like Disgust and Napalm Raid are clear and not unfounded comparisons. There's a bleak levity weaving through the relentlessness and it showcases that incessant brooding of the human existence. A not-so-subtle cry for a way out in a world gone mad.

***DEAD CELLS out of Vancouver do it dark, desperate, and minimal. An archaic sound from the gothic ages of punk - when punk was catchy, but also dangerous. Going back to the three chord song, with downstrokes, vicious energy, and the two minute deadline. Sacred by the outstaning artwork, it's night church in the post apocalyptic wasteland. Their first LP and follow-up to their 2018 demo tape which was overheared by many people. Desperation, angst and frustration pepper the words that twist and turn like daggers to the back of emperors. Twin guitar attacks carry melody and smart chord changes backed by a rhythm section that runs the risk of falling off the edge of the cliff. It's complimented by a brooding vocalist that half shouts-half sings.

Collection 1979-1982 by Easy Money

Easy Money

Collection 1979-1982
Neon Taste

***Canada has a long and storied history of New Wave. We had some of the best records of the varying styles from Pointed Sticks to Viletones and DOA to Neos. Even our own KBD monsters like Dry Heaves and Siggy Magic. Powerpop wasn't just the previously mentioned Pointed Sticks though. In Victoria BC Canada there was a band that released two strong singles in 1980 on Richards Records and broke up 2 years later. Active for only 3 years, these singles were quickly forgotten and overshadowed by the blistering hardcore of the cities 2nd wave. The band was called Easy Money. Fast Forward a 2 or 3 decades. Piecing together Canada's involvement in punk and new wave has been a hobby of mine for years. Finding the obscurities, the mistakes, the forgotten and the outright terrible has been fun and frustrating. Talking to old rockers, punks, promoters and fans, probing the local fanzines and looking for the things no one has heard before presents a whole slough of different emotions. It also presents a pretty stand-out record collection. To think that there were demo quality recordings of Easy Money—enough to make an LP—lying around un-comped and unheard with exceptional sound quality was truly dumbfounding. Solid songs, excellent playing, infectious, live off the floor, 2 track jamspace demos. They had to be heard. And now they can. Hosehead Records and Neon Taste Records in conjunction with the band are co-releasing Easy Money's demo LP with both singles for your listening pleasure...

***Gripe hail from Santiago, Chile and play Hardcore served up just the way we like it. Quick, hook-filled smashes that are perfect for the skatepark, late-night vandalism sprees and running from the pigs. Each track is short with no time left to fall into frills, breakdowns or other energy saps. Just pure, unadulterated Punk Muzik with a vocalist that sounds like he collapses after each track lets up. Sounds like Formaldehyde Junkies covering Circle Jerks. So, you know. Perfect. Included in this 12" is the new 9 track recording recorded last year as well as an incredible demo from 2020 that was released as a cassette and digitally in the same year.

***First official reissue of the Canadian classic. A monster rarity from the inception of Punk Rock on the West Coast was actually a soundtrack to a film of the same name. 1978's Commercials For Free is a 20 minute DIY film about a young man leaving the suburbs in search for a life more exciting. It's a film full of chain-wielding punkettes, broken dreams, getting ripped off and also some fabulous archive footage of early punk in Vancouver including early Subhumans footage and a wacky storyline that follows Siggy and his experience with the New Wave. Shortly after the film release a small, one-time pressing of 200 copies was released, quickly snapped up by locals. Commercials For Free flew under the radar and was generally an unknown piece of punk rock history complete with false-starts, maniacal singing and raw manic energy. The excellent Smash The State Compilation series drew some more attention to this rare artifact and compiled 3 of its 4 tracks on the 3rd edition, removing some more of the mystery that made up this release.

***The drudgery of the last few months are over and we've got 4 new tracks of punk rock expressed through what sounds like plaque-caked teeth and furry tongues. "Blood On The Beach" is made up of four drunken gospels to the gods of Nowhere and Boredom.
