***BACK IN PRINT ON NEW "OUTER SPACED" COLORED VINYL!!! "So you're addicted to hard rock from 1972 and getting tired of LPs that don't take you for the full ride. You check out tons of 'em. Stonewall? Hmmm... only the most potent and rare stuff can get you off nowadays. Kicks intense enough to remind you why you got into it in the first place. Jams you can't wait to lay on your friends so uncontrollably alive you know it's gonna wipe 'em out. Yeah... you really need Stonewall. It's ritual time. Drop the needle into the groove. Side One. Stoned swaggering confidence, attitude and energy right out of the gate. Stonewall immediately take charge with 'Right On,' an 'incite-the-audience, invoke-the-jams' renegade rocker akin to 'Are You Ready?' by Grand Funk or 'Combination of the Two' by Big Brother conceptually but taken way further. I can't say more without some sort of spoiler alert. To mess with your head, after a near cluster-fuck with the audience in the opening track comes 'Solitude.' After a savage encounter with 'Bloody Mary' the side ends with my favorite track. As soon as the guitar riff ignites 'Outer Spaced' you know you're gonna get crushed. I hear people all over the world saying Stonewall is a 'Holy Grail'. I agree. 'Holy Grail' status for an LP requires the most extreme and exciting combination of quality and rarity. That's not all. It has to have mystery. It has to reek of humanity. There can be no...

***"SALT LICK is the very new L.A. trio with heavy connections to Permanent Records, Mock Records, JESUS SONS and that particularly collector-y Bonehead Crunchers/Crushers/etc.-style blunt-object '70s rock ‘n’ roll. Enthusiastically working the same grinding vibes of that recently rediscovered wave of old-school weirdos who got lost somewhere between prog rock they couldn’t play and punk rock they didn’t get, and who’s we-just-wanna-rock! 45s ended up creating a whole micro-genre of longhair off-the-grid proto-proto-punk. (Salt Lick also claims as an influence 'the one good song on a bunch of major label LPs from the early 70s,' which is also very accurate—and Permanent / RidingEasy’s own Brown Acid comps also make a nice sampler of this sound.)"—LA Record. ***"Hey man, could you use a little serenity? GRAVE FLOWERS BONGO BAND thinks we could all use a little and they’re here to give it to us. In order to enjoy this record, you don’t have to get dressed. In fact, it’s probably better that you don’t. And you definitely don’t need to leave the house. This record is best experienced in the comforts of your own home, just as long as your home is as peaceful as it should be. If it’s not, Flower Pot should be enjoyed naturally. The organic vibes the Bongo Band project are just as soothing as they are psychedelic. There’s a lot going on here, but the record also feels very simplistic, like a more modern take on Ted Lucas, Sam Gopal, or Tyrannosaurus Rex. The journey is largely acoustic and serene, but the electric and slightly more chaotic moments compliment the rest of the instrumentation like honey on granola. Flower Pot is the perfect soundtrack for your next sacrificial effigy burning, but it’s also a record that you can make out to. It’ll ease you into the day or take you away after a long night. A perfect prescription for whatever ails you. I’m sure it’ll blow your mind, regardless of your mental state. Side note: It’d be a goddamn shame if the Bongo Band doesn’t turn into a cult, or at least develop a cult following." Edition of 150 copies packaged in hand-assembled, paste-on jackets.

***Never before has a debut album so seamlessly mixed all the best subgenres of 60 years of rock into such a fantastic crystalline stalactite. If the sounds contained within these grooves could be distilled down to something edible, even the smallest dose would be lethal. Recorded under the influence of Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, Black Sabbath and NEU! HOOVERIII is BERT HOOVER from MIND MELD and JESUS SONS on vocals and guitar, GABE FLORES from BABYLON on guitar, KAZ MIRBLOUK of NUMB.ER on bass, SHAUGHNESSY of Jesus Sons and TRIPTIDES on drums, and JAIQ STYNE of various LA bands on synth.   “For those unfamiliar with Hooveriii, the vibe is that of a driving, psychedelic space rock band, with enough shred-laden, dual-guitar work to impress the heads and more hooks than a Peter Pan (pirate?) convention. This batch of songs blends sweetness and crunch better than your favorite breakfast cereal and the effect lasts longer too. One listen and you’ll have these melodic riffs and caloric choruses buried in your mind grapes so deep you’ll need to have them surgically extracted. If you enjoyed the songs Bert wrote for Mind Meld, you won’t be disappointed by the penmanship Hoover has brought to the table here and there’s even more sonic layers to sink your canines into. It’s not surprising that this version of the band has stuck longer than any other and they’ve already shared stages with Fuzz, ORB, and more. Soon enough, you’ll be seeing them at the...

Doctor (of Love) by Salt Lick

Salt Lick

Doctor (of Love)

***The early '70s were an incredible time for RocknRoll. Music had lost it’s virginity and abuse of all sorts was running rampant. Bands were turning up, de-tuning, and dropping out left and right. Bad trips and other people’s battles were bumming everybody out and the discontent was palpable. These vibes are what informed SALT LICK's first recordings. Informed and influenced by the Motor City scene as much as the boneheaded side of the American underground, Salt Lick recorded these two crunchy tunes in one short late-night session in a seedy LA neighborhood. Bargain basement beer flowed like wine and you can almost hear the pull-tabs being popped over the hiss of the tape machine. The men of Salt Lick came together over a collective disdain of the castrated rock they’d been hearing and wanted to toughen things up a bit, all while keeping it groovy. “If the ladies ain’t having a good time, no one is.”, one member recalls thinking. No picture sleeve necessary. Everything you need to see is on the label.   Recommended if you like: Brown Acid, Acid Nightmares, regular Acid, The Stooges, MC5, Leaf Hound, Jerusalem, Josefus, Blues Creation, Sir Lord Baltimore, Grand Funk, Floating Bridge, Les Variations, and the one good song on a bunch of major label LPs from the early 70s.

Never before has a debut single so seamlessly mixed all the best subgenres of 60 years of rock into such a fantastic crystalline stalactite. If the sounds contained within these grooves could be distilled down to something edible, even the smallest dose would be lethal. Both tracks were recorded and mixed in 6 hours with Mark Rains at Station House in Los Angeles, CA. The A-side is a chugging minimal number with a hooking riff. The song is about cutting your brain in half and letting your fears pour out. The flip is an improvised instrumental jam inspired by Krautrock staples like Can & Amon Düül II.

SPECIAL EDITION!!! This gatefold edition never to be pressed again. Limited edition of 150 black copies. Hailing from the vast sprawl of Los Angeles, MIND MELD became one in the early daze of 2015. Their melodic brand of heavy garage-psych is catchier and more fully-realized than 99.9% of their peers and their hooks will grab you like a paddle cactus quill and bury themselves deep under your skin, but there will be no pain. Members of the unit have played with and/or are current members of other bands, but Mind Meld's sum is greater than it's parts. Something about the band's sound is so natural and organic that it immediately feels like something you've heard before, but you won't be able to place it because it's all original. Influences include, but aren't limited to the Gories, the Stooges, Hawkwind, Edgar Broughton Band (they slay a cover of "Why Can't Somebody Love Me") and a mix of modern Garage and Psychedelic Rock. Mind Meld's poppier numbers still have a air of heaviness to them, while their heavy jams can hold their own with the densest of them. The rhythm section is rock solid. Always in the pocket, not too simple, but not overly complex. The guitar is tastefully ripping, grooving along with the drums and bass most of the time, but soaring to the outer limits at just the right moments. A perfect rock'n'roll recipe.

***"It's a month into twenty fuckin' fifteen and the best thing I've listened to so far is a band called Rectal Hygienics. I know what you're thinking, and yeah, this can go one of two ways. No, they're not a joke. Yes, this is a terrifyingly heavy album. Honestly, adjectives like heavy, violent, and brutal don't really do this record justice. I saw a blog post or forum comment somewhere where Rectal Hygienics were referred to endearingly as "pigfuck." Is that a genre? I'm not sure, but it encapsulates their sound nicely. This is a steaming pile of pigfuck. Anyway, if you dig early Swans and you're looking for a modern band with songwriting chops and an abrasive, noise-sludge aesthetic, you've found it. ***In our constant search to feed our vinyl addiction, in which the next score is always needed now and crate digging is a matter of life and death, sometimes we get to unearth a gem that's been yet to be discovered. That may seem impossible these days, but sitting in someone's closet, basement or garage is a tape reel or acetate that just never got to be pressed. A band with a six minute vision, a two sided RnR epiphany never shared with the world. And when we get our hands on such an unbridled, unadulterated sonic treasure we know that it is both our duty and our pleasure to give that obscure band their 45 rpms in the spotlight. Hence BAD AXE! As garage faded, psych imploded and rock n roll took its bloated FM dominance to arenas nationwide, there were scores of bands that sought to ingest those Zep/Sabbath/Deep Purple/Blue Cheer moves and make them their own rally cry. Call it a second wave of "garage bands" but this time the music was more fitted for dark, hazy wood paneled basements with the requisite hi-fis, joints and cheap beers stolen from dad. These kids just outta high school, rejecting AM pop and the idealism of their hippie older siblings, set out to make their own way in the dystopian ‘70s. Cut from the same cloth as Jerusalem, Morgen, Sainte Anthony's Fyre, Iron Claw, Bent Wind and other like-minded, bonehead crunchin' acid archives RnR weirdos, Bad Axe briefly aimed...

Fans of Terry Riley, Kraftwerk, Conrad Schntizler, and Kosmische Musik in general take note!  BITCHIN BAJAS has returned to Permanent Records (following their split single with Moon Duo) with a brand new record of side-long transcendental synth workouts. This is Bitchin Bajas most accessible and autobahn ready delivery to date! Bitchin Bajas began as a side project, but COOPER CRAIN of CAVE and DAN QUINLIVAN formerly of MAHJONGG have been spending as much time, if not more, with Bitchin Bajas as they have with the aforementioned groups and they've been progressing very quickly.  In just two or so years, Bitchin Bajas have released three critically acclaimed LPs (one on Important Records and two on Kallestei Editions), two incredible splits (one with Moon Duo and the other with the Peaking Lights-related Faceplant), and one very limited edition cassette tape. The two side-long pieces on this nearly 40 minute EP were written on their 2012 European tour and recorded and mixed over three days by Bitchin Bajas at Minbal Studio in Chicago, Illinois. ***A reissue of BIL VERMETTE’s phenomenal private press LP, Katha Visions, from 1984. “Fans of all things SYNTH absolutely must hear this LP. Bil is a synthesizer aficionado and it shows. The first track on the ‘dark side’ is ‘Mountain Funeral,’ an aptly titled ambient synth dirge if there ever was one. The title track ventures into territory that was likely influenced by Terry Riley and could’ve easily been an influence on Bitchin’ Bajas. It’s a repetitive, layered, and soothingly long centerpiece to the album. ‘Long Trail Down’ closes out the A-side with effects that sound like seagulls floating over the top of the layered synth chord drones and melodies. It’s an easy track to get lost in, but then again, so is this whole record. The ‘light side’ (aka Side B) begins with ‘Morning Dance’ an upbeat number featuring the first appearance of synthetic rhythms. Up to this point, Katha Visions has been completely instrumental, but ‘Someday Soon’ features the only appearance by guest vocalist DAN COOPER. Cooper’s voice is melancholic and robotic, which fits in with the rest of the track perfectly. ‘Staircase’ sounds like a long-lost John Carpenter horror flick theme while the album’s closer ‘Opposites Attract’ is the curveball track on Katha Visions. It includes the first and only appearance by BRUCE WALTERS, an old high school chum of Vermette’s. Bruce disrupts the synth-clusiveness of the record with some soaring guitar lines that have us wondering what else he was up to around this time. We...

***In late 2010 a record came out of nowhere and blew our minds. That record was "Eyewash Silver" by KING BLOOD. Unfortunately, it was issued in a limited edition of 100 copies and it disappeared faster than a fugitive at a busted up coke party. We initially discovered the record through a very enticing review that Doug Mosurock over at Still Single / Dusted wrote and our minds were blown when we received the records and realized that there was absolutely no hyperbole or exaggeration in Doug's review. For your reference, here's said review: "Little anonymous fuzz guitar rudiment blowdown from ex-SNAKE APARTMENT guitarist RYLAND WHARTON (also the man behind the excellent Skulltones and Twonicorn labels). As King Blood, he lays down eight instrumental four-trackers rendered over a three-year period, nothing but guitar, bass and cymbal to keep time, and in that space the artist gets real, with simple themes repeated in a noisy, low-rent, yet meditative space. For as thick as these vibes get, the music itself is not necessarily aggressive, which is why these big, billowing songs sound gentle and bluesy and introspective, even in the overblown treatment most of them receive. Early Wooden Shjips or the Purling Hiss LP (and above all, Les Rallizes Denudes) would be good signposts for this album, but without the obvious psych moves like wah-solos and acid burn motifs, or the heavy drumming to keep time; King Blood wants to get you down by volume, and in that it is a drifting,...

***Permanent Records is proud to be releasing the digital edition of the very limited 12-inch split EP between two of America's finest underground psychedelic rock bands, PURLING HISS and PUFFY AREOLAS. Philly's Purling Hiss have quickly made a name for themselves and in just over a year have already released 3 critically acclaimed LPs on Permanent, Richie, and Woodsist in addition to an upcoming 12-inch release on Mexican Summer. They've toured with Kurt Vile and the Violators and share members with BIRDS OF MAYA. They've released a handful of 7-inch singles and a well-received LP on Siltbreeze within the last year and are still raging across America leaving nothing but crushed beer cans, empty pill bottles, and roaches in their wake. Puffy Areolas' side of this split is a doom-y noise psych annihilator that clocks in a just under 8 minutes.  Not for the faint of heart.

***COSMONAUTS are Orange County's premier garage psych group and they're barely old enough to drink legally. These kids have only been making music together for a short while, but they've already shared stages with and are garnering comparisons to well-known garage and psych acts like Black Angels, Ty Segall, and Thee Oh Sees. Although Cosmonauts share some similar influences with these groups, their sound is much grittier, more repetitive, and more Spacemen 3 influenced. Cassette tape tastemakers, Burger Records, released the Cosmonauts debut on tape back in 2010 and now it's available on wax for the first time courtesy of Permanent Records. Fans of the aforementioned bands will absolutely be calling themselves Cosmonauts fans before the year is out.

***“RUNNING is one of America's best psych/punk bands. Running sounds to us like Clockcleaner, if they played twice as fast and half as long. The vocals are reverbed beyond recognition, the drums are pummeling, and the bass and guitar are abrasive feedback-laden. After pumping out a couple of incredible cassette tape only releases, Running went into the studio and recorded some of their material (semi) professionally. Those recordings have now been preserved to wax as Running's debut 12-inch EP. This eponymous EP comes housed in a jacket with really interestingly created artwork and contains exactly 13 totally brutal weird punk songs. If these guys were jockier, they'd be a hardcore band. Thankfully, they're too arty for that ish. We'd love to point you in the direction of the band's Myspace page for a preview, but they don't have one. Trust us on this one, or preview ‘#1 Dad’ on the Permanent Records Chicago Myspace page. This record fucking rips! The first pressing is limited to 525 copies!”—Permanent

***Back in early 2009, Permanent issued CACAW’s debut Get A Brain EP and quickly sold through the first pressing of 300 copies. There was an immediate repress, which has also since sold out. Here we are just over a year and a half later, proudly offering Cacaw's follow-up eponymous LP which has been pressed in a limited first edition of 500 copies. If you dug the brutal noise rock sounds crammed onto the one side of their debut EP, you're gonna flip over their brand new LP. It's heavier, louder, and longer. That's right, two full sides of Cacaw's signature noise rock brutality. A big selling point for their first release was the fact that two of the COUGHS are in Cacaw, however, Cacaw have since garnered their own audience and the Coughs reference seems barely worth mentioning any longer. For those of you who haven't heard them yet, Cacaw takes the Coughs sound and distills it down to a more minimal yet no less intense brand of really fucking groovy noise rock. Cacaw have quickly become one of Chicago’s most popular underground rock bands. Fans who have witnessed their live shows always seem to leave begging for more. Cacaw’s second record, just like their first release, is a doozie both sonically and visually.

God And Hair by Heater

Heater

God And Hair
Permanent

***HEATER is a three-piece Columbia super group, if such a thing exists. Heater's guitarist and lead singer, ZACH "ZZ" MCLUCKIE, used to be a member of CAVE and SNEAKERS), among others. Heater's bassist / second guitarist, JEREMY “JERUSALEM” FREEZE also plays guitar in JERUSALEM and the STARBASKETS, and both he and Heater's drummer, JON “WUJJ”, formerly jammed together in CALIFORNIA RAISINS (their only release was a split 10-inch with Cave, also on Permanent). God and Hair is a super upbeat, melodic pop record in essence, but as mentioned before, these guys come from a very DIY background. It's got some fast repetitive lo-fi punk rock jams with reverb enhanced vocals similar to those found on the Sneakers Children Into People EP, and some Clean-esque pop elements, but it's also got tracks with a great laid back summertime '90s alt-pop vibe not too dissimilar from the least noisy '90s moments of Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. All of these elements come together and make for a unique sound, and make for one hell of a summertime DIY pop jammer.

Phantom Power by Black Math

Black Math

Phantom Power

***WFMU aptly described BLACK MATH’s debut LP from 2009 as “Dark-wave buried in tape hiss, with grinding synth, electric cello, and drum machine. The three piece lists Depeche Mode and Big Black as influences, but they’re straight up 80s.” The band will also tell you that Siouxsie and the Banshees are a big influence, but Black Math has a completely compelling and catchy, but quite dark and mysterious sound all their own. Nine killer tracks of dark-wave pop including a cover of the Anals’ “Commando of Love.” First pressing of 500 copies.

Survival Scrolls by Brain Idea

LAST COPIES - OUT OF PRINT!!! BRAIN IDEA is one of Chicago’s most exciting new bands. Their second release is also their debut full-length on Permanent Records. It’s fulla stripped down, super upbeat, catchy and totally DIY-style rock’n’roll jams, heavily influenced by New Zealand’s legendary DIY indie rockers, The Clean and ‘90s bedroom recording pop savants. The band took most of the material on their out-of-print and highly sought after demo tape and re-recorded it with much more depth and reverb, especially on the vocals. They’ve added some great instrumental interludes that tie the tracks together which are quite kraut-y in nature.

EXPO ’70 bass/synth player MATT HILL has gone solo. His debut LP under the UMBERTO moniker is an analog masterpiece heavily influenced by the classic film score work of Goblin, except arguably better. From the moment you drop the needle, you’ll be transported to Italy as an extra in a vintage horror flick directed by Dario Argento. This is some of the most accessible, yet totally authentic sounding music of the “giallo” genre we’ve ever heard. It was previously only available as a hyper limited edition CDR and cassette tape via Sonic Meditations. For fans of Goblin, John Carpenter, Zombi, and classic Italian horror soundtracks.”—Permanent Records.
