For the better part of the decade, San Francisco's Ludicra has cultivated a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest and most forward-thinking bands in the contemporary underground metal scene. They were one of the first inspired by the second wave of Norwegian black metal to fuse that sound with punk, traditional metal, and neo-folk elements, and alongside the now-legendary Weakling, they put Bay Area metal back on the map as a hotbed of artistic fervor. The band is comprised of experienced musicians who have traveled the underground for years: John Cobbett (Hammers of Misfortune), Ross Sewage (Impaled, Ghoul), Aesop Dekker (Agalloch), Laurie Shanaman (Queen Cobra), and Christy Cather. The Tenant, their fourth album, finds Ludicra at the height of their musical prowess. Possibly their most metal-sounding release yet (thanks in no small part to some infectious Metallica-esque dual guitar harmonics), the record also features a strong progressive edge reminiscent of 2006's Fex Urbis Lex Orbis--not to mention a return of the raw, punk-inflected black metal vibe with which the band first made their name. It is bound to be one of the most memorable releases of 2010.

Indianapolis's Apostle of Solitude was formed in 2004 by Chuck Brown, formerly of Gates of Slumber. While both bands play an epic style of doom metal, Brown's new project has carved its own niche within the genre. The band's music is rooted in themes of personal struggle, sadness and tragedy--a departure from the tales of wizards and warriors common to traditional doom bands. Apostle of Solitude's debut EP and 2008 full-length Sincerest Misery created a good buzz in the underground, drawing comparisons to doom legends Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Last Sunrise, their latest album, will solidify the band's standing in that elite circle. Packed with emotionally stirring odes, massive guitars and a pounding rhythm section, it is destined to go down as one of the best doom metal releases of 2010.

Working Together For Our Privacy by Wold

Wold

Working Together For Our Privacy
Profound Lore

Canada's Wold is among the most bizarre and extreme entities to have emerged from the black metal scene in recent years. Hailing from the vast, barren plains of Saskatchewan, they have three albums under their belt already--intense, punishing rituals comprised of layered frequencies and abstract noise that listeners deem either pure genius or unbearable madness. The band's latest opus, Working Together for Our Privacy, is a new kind of Wold album. At only three extended tracks, it is their first completely instrumental release--looping noise fragments pieced together into a flurry of blizzard-like sonic fury. This truly unique and transcendent exercise in pure audial hypnosis transports one to strange and otherworldly destinations.

Crypt Born And Tethered To Ruin by Vasaeleth

Vasaeleth

Crypt Born And Tethered To Ruin
Profound Lore

The North American underground death metal scene, a haven for the genre since its inception in the 1980s and peak in the early '90s, is in the midst of a resurgence. The only problem is many of the bands involved are not real death metal. Nevertheless, an elite set of new groups within the movement stay true to its pure elements--acts like Father Befouled, Funebrarum, Disma, and now Vasaeleth bring the darker, uglier side of death metal to the forefront. Hailing from Georgia and Texas, Vasaeleth are a new group featuring members from Legions of Astaroth and Dagon. They've released a well-received demo and EP, Adorned and Iridescent, both in limited quantities that sold out instantly. Crypt Born and Tethered to Ruin, their ultra-brutal, doomy debut album, will cement the band's place among the premiere acts in the death metal underground. Conjuring the specters of the legendary Incantation, Autopsy, and Mortician, it delivers a bracing reminder of the old-school glory days when raw, guttural death metal ruled supreme. Aptly titled, Crypt Born is a true expression of pure, unbridled death.

Dark ambient chamber rock group Worm Ouroboros, one of the most promising new Bay Area act to emerge this past year, present their self-titled debut album on Profound Lore Records. Featuring members from a number of still-active local legends including Amber Asylum and World Eater, Worm Ouroboros draws from similar influences. Most notably, bassist/singer Lorraine Rath shared songwriting duties with John Gossard (Asunder/Weakling) in The Gault. The doom-edged sound the band conjures on Worm Ouroboros is reminiscent of classic 4AD acts like This Mortal Coil and The Cocteau Twins. Delicately crafted structures counterbalance segments of distorted, down-tuned heaviness, resulting in an ethereal and atmospheric vibe that unfolds over the course of the album's nine tracks.  The cover was designed by Rath herself, an artist in her own right who also supplied the stunning artwork that graced the debut Hammers of Misfortune album The Bastard.

Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence by Impetuous Ritual

Impetuous Ritual

Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence
Profound Lore

Featuring two members of notorious death metal band Portal, Australia's Impetuous Ritual are destined to carve their name into the echelons of underground death metal with their brutally atmospheric debut album Relentless Execution of Ceremonial Excrescence. Conjuring the true essence of death metal, Impetuous Ritual comes across as a mix of early Incantation and legendary Aussie gods Bestial Warlust. Raw production and an overall evil sound mark the album as a milestone in underground death metal. Through surreal, submerged riffs, a pounding rhythm section, and deep, subterranean growls, Impetuous Ritual is an unearthly offering that will please fans who worship such classics as Onward to Golgotha, Blood and Valour, Transcendence into the Peripheral, or anything Portal-related. The band is aligned with a new breed of underground groups including Dead Congregation, Funebrarum, Necrovation, and Mitochondrion. You have been warned.

***AVAILABLE AGAIN ON CD!!! An enigma within the realm of death metal, Australia's Portal have defined themselves, over the course of two full-length albums and a handful of demos and EPs, as a bizarre and frightening entity with a unique and unparalleled sound. No other band currently in existence has such a polarizing effect on the underground metal scene--they are regarded as either pure geniuses or incomprehensible noisemakers. Their madness and chaos is the soundtrack to a F.W. Murnau film gone terribly awry. Profound Lore Records brought Portal the attention of the worldwide metal underground by reissuing their limited 2003 debut album, Seepia, and releasing its follow-up, Outre. Swarth, their highly anticipated new album, slowly crawls under the listener's skin and penetrates the psyche. This eight-track monolith combines the off-kilter dynamics of their debut with the surging atmospherics of Outre, taking their sound to new ungodly levels. No other album released this year is as unique or frightening as Swarth. Portal is the future of death metal.

Demon Haunted World by Crucifist

Crucifist

Demon Haunted World
Profound Lore

Since their formation in 2004, Rochester, NY's old-school black metal band Crucifist has established quite a reputation for themselves with a promising self-released demo and crushing live performances. Now, Profound Lore Records proudly unleashes their debut album on the hungry underground masses. Demon-Haunted World, which features bassist Danny Lilker (of Brutal Truth / Nuclear Assault / Anthrax / SOD fame) and members of thrash band Orodruin, is pure raw black metal headbanging fury that harkens back to the glory days of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Venom, and Bathory, with a twisted glory that also incorporates elements of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the doom 'n' gloom of Black Sabbath.  This eleven-song masterpiece includes an Angel Witch cover and some of the coolest artwork to grace a Profound Lore release yet.

The follow-up to their acclaimed Pheromone, Summon takes the nightmare Bloody Panda first explored on their split LP with experimentalists Kayo Dot even further into the depths. The album is a disturbing, cinematic vision of terror and frightening depravity that lurks within the dark chambers of doom metal horror.  Front-woman Yoshiko Ohara lifts Bloody Panda to a chilling new plateau with her death-defying wails, a cross between the lamenting and the operatic. Her rapturous vocal delivery is underpinned by the monolithic, dirge-like rhythm section that gives this beast its foundation. Ohara, an accomplished visual artist, is also responsible for the artwork that graces the cover. Summon comes as a dual-disc set that includes a DVD with an abstract visual interpretation of the 20-plus minute track "Miserere." Filmed in Brooklyn, New York, and Jaliluhur Dam, Indonesia, this dark and mysterious visual companion features renowned Butoh dancer Yuko Kaseki.

Amber Asylum is one of the most influential and respected acts in the neo-classical / dark ambient genre. Group leader, multi-instrumentalistn and producer Kris Force boasts a repertoire that includes collaborations with Neurosis and Swans as well as credits for penning soundtrack music for video games, television, and feature films. Her band is known for their distinct brand of chilling romantic mire and brooding darkness constructed with layers of violin, viola, cello, guitar, bass, percussion, and Force's alluring voice. Bitter River is the darkest and most devastating Amber Asylum album ever conceived. The perfect follow-up to the plunging Still Point, this introspective journey into lost love and lost innocence paints powerful sonic portraits of vast, lonely landscapes, dark chambers, rolling fog, and monumental twilight. For the recording, Force employed some of the most accomplished musicians in the underground: long-time Amber Asylum conspirator Jackie-Perez Gratz (Giant Squid, Grayceon) on cello; Leila Abdul-Rauf (Saros) on guitar, piano, and vocals; bass player Eric Wood (Bastard Noise); and drummer Chiyo Nukaga (Noothgrush), along with guest appearances by Sigrid Sheie (Hammers of Misfortune) on flute and Jarboe providing narration. Bitter River features artwork by David D'Andrea. "Amber Asylum pisses all over Sunn 0)))." --Terrorizer Magazine

Having gained quite a reputation from their epic debut EP Sol and their recent UK tour with Norwegian legends Mayhem, Altar of Plagues have morphed their layered sound into an apocalyptic sonic maelstrom on White Tomb. The two-track album takes the band's black metal foundations and builds on them an expansive, ambient, experimental work--a bleak vision of desolate and abandoned urban wastelands. If bands like Wolves in the Throne Room conjure scenes of epic nature, massive cascading waterfalls, and engulfing forests, Altar of Plagues create stark images of crumbling skyscrapers, dying and rotten urban structures, empty highways, and desolate oceans.  The Irish band's talent lies in their innovative and visceral mix of styles, including the slow, trudging doom of Khanate and Burning Witch; the minimal electronica and haunting ambient industrial of Cold Meat Industry and Tesco bands; the towering apocalyptic vibes of Old Man Gloom and old-school Isis; and the instrumental wonders portrayed by Mogwai and Red Sparowes. White Tomb was mastered by Colin Marston (of Krallice / Behold... The Arctopus / Dysrhythmia) and features guest vocals from Nathan Misterek of the now-defunct doom gods Graves at Sea.

On 2007's Eater of Birds, Colorado's Cobalt set new standards for extreme underground blackened metal in the U.S. The unique opus of diseased avant-blackened violent ritualistic war metal set the underground scene aflame with its epic, atmospheric nature; no other album was quite like it.   The band gave their audience a glimpse of a new direction last year on the limited Landfill Breastmilk Beast EP. With Gin, the duo of Phil McSorley and Erik Wunder treads a darker path and carves out something with more depth and substance. This new album presents ten surreal, ritualistic observations on death, despair, and destruction, inspired by the writings of literary masters Ernest Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson. Former Swans singer Jarboe once again lends her vocal talents, appearing on the tracks "A Clean Well Lighted Place" and "Pregnant Insect."  Like a churning maelstrom ready to engulf and level all in its wake, Gin comes across as an extreme blackened metal cousin of Swans, Neurosis, or Killing Joke. Cobalt proves once again that they are in their own realm, untouchable.

Acrid Plains by Saros

Saros

Acrid Plains
Profound Lore

Along with Hammers of Misfortune, Asunder, Grayceon, and Ludicra--bands currently raising a fervor in the Bay Area--Saros is regarded as one of the most promising new acts to arrive on the underground metal scene.  Comprised of members from Amber Asylum, legendary black metal act Weakling, and Bastard Noise, Saros's unique progressive and epic extreme metal tastefully blends many styles. The four-piece draws influence from black metal, classic Bay Area metal (...And Justice For All-era Metallica), technical death metal (Symbolic-era Death), neo-classical chamber music (Saros could be considered the metal sister band of Amber Asylum, as singer/guitarist Leila Rauf is a full-time member of both bands while mastermind Kris Force makes an appearance on Acrid Plains), and neo-folk (Agalloch, Death in June).   Produced by the legendary Billy Anderson (known for his work with High on Fire, Neurosis, Sleep, The Melvins, and more), this gem will only serve to further the band's growing reputation.

Fields / Church Of Broken Glass by Hammers Of Misfortune

Hammers Of Misfortune

Fields / Church Of Broken Glass
Profound Lore

San Francisco's Hammers of Misfortune, currently one of the most praised acts in the metal underground, have tapped into something timeless, unique, and masterful since their inception in 2000. Their mix of traditional metal with NWOBHM, classic and obscure prog, '70s rock, and Broadway musical and theatrical elements has won the band critical acclaim for their three milestone releases, The Bastard, The August Engine, and The Locust Years.  Hammers of Misfortune's latest effort is something of an experiment for songwriter John Cobbett--his most ambitious undertaking as a musician yet. While the guitarist has always harbored the desire to craft an epic double-album, Fields / Church of Broken Glass is actually comprised of two distinct full-lengths packaged together and priced as a single album.  With new characters in the fold--male singer/guitarist Patrick Goodwin, female vocalist Jesse Quattro, and bassist Ron Nichols--Hammers of Misfortune heads in a new direction. Fields / Church of Broken Glass is both more vintage-sounding, with a clear '70s rock influence, and more prog-oriented. This is the band's most challenging material to date, reaffirming the fact that Hammers of Misfortune is among of the most unique and timeless acts in metal today.

Temporary Antennae by Caina

Caina

Temporary Antennae
Profound Lore

Not often in today's underground does a young talent forge a distinct and expansive musical entity. Twenty-two-year-old Andrew Curtis Brignell, one of the UK's most promising young musicians, did just that when he created the raw and primitive black metal enigma known as Caina. Despite remaining a one-man act, Brignell fulfills the promise of sonic expansion hinted at since the beginning, and his development as a multi-instrumentalist is something to behold.   In 2006, after several demo tapes, Caina released their debut, Some People Fall, which found Brignell trying to progress beyond the black metal paradigm while still maintaining its essence. A year later, Caina delivered Mourner, its first collaboration with Profound Lore, and Brignell truly took the Caina sound to a new plateau. With elements ranging from black metal, drone/experimental, and post rock, to song-oriented acoustic folk and shoegaze, Mourner was hailed as a modern-day black metal masterwork, landing at the #20 spot on Decibel Magazine's top album list of 2007.   Temporary Antennae, Brignell's most consistent full-length, is not only his most oppressive, intense, and uneasy sounding work yet, but also his most accessible.   Beginning where these two polar opposite musical forces confront each other, Temporary Antennae journeys through a surreal landscape where Caina's black metal origins meet post-rock, experimental, and even '80s new wave and pop influences. With so many layers to the madness adding depth and substance to the album, Temporary Antennae is Caina's most accomplished release to date.

Ii: Points At Infinity by Atavist / Nadja

Atavist / Nadja

Ii: Points At Infinity
Profound Lore

Points at Infinity is the second collaboration between the UK's most infamous doom/sludge metal band, Atavist, and the most prolific and respected act in experimental/drone/doom/ambient music today, Nadja.  The first collaboration, titled 12012291920/1414101 and released last year through Invada Records (owned by Portishead main songwriter Geoff Barrow), was merely an experiment--one that was actually initiated by Profound Lore Records. This second collaboration presents a sound picture with significantly more substance and depth; while still experimental in nature, Points at Infinity exemplifies growth and expansion by both of these enigmatic bands.  PRAISE FOR 12012291920/1414101: "This collaboration between the UK's Atavist and Canadian doom mongers Nadja is a rare old treat. Across two lengthy pieces, the bands square up to deliver a disc's worth of bottom-heavy sludge and floating drones. Far from being a cold-hearted excursion into dark metal, the resultant pieces are a surprisingly warm blend of distortion, glacial chord changes and nebulous atmospherics. Opening with 'Twentyfour:Sixteen,' the collaborators launch themselves into an unexpectedly melodic domain only to soak up more challenging sonic elements as the piece progresses; by about halfway through you'll hear glistening feedback tones beginning to intrude, and by the time we arrive at the half-hour long second track, 'Twentynine:Thirtyseven,' the bands are bathing their sound in oceans of noise and hollowed-out electronic tones with a distinct emphasis placed on the lowest end of the frequency spectrum. By its close, the piece gathers a sub-bass-driven weight that Stephen O'Malley could be proud of, all cloaked in...

Recognized as one of the most virtuosic guitar wizards today, Mick Barr displays his awe-inspiring six-string histrionics in such bizarre outfits as Ocrilim (Hydra Head) and Orthrelm (Ipecac), bending and stretching the rules of modern-day playing and giving new meaning to progressive guitar-work. Nonetheless, Barr (who has also collaborated with the likes of John Zorn and Mike Patton) is quite the enigma today.  Colin Marston, one of the most prolific and recognized musicians in technical / extreme progressive metal, also boasts an impressive pedigree, having played in Behold... The Arctopus (Black Market/Metal Blade), Dysrhythmia (Relapse), Byla, etc., as well as founded his own recording studio, Thousand Caves (in which he recently recorded the latest Jarboe solo album).  On their self-titled debut, Krallice treads the musical landscape familiar to Barr and Marston, but this time the pair translates it into a visceral, tremolo-layered black metal monolith. Comprised of six epic, time-stretching hymns, the album is a vitriolic and hypnotizing assault on the senses that brings to mind early Burzum, Nattens Madrigal-era Ulver, Gorgoroth (Antichrist in particular), and US legends Weakling. Krallice is Barr and Marston's unique vision--singular in the realm of US black metal today.

Landfill Breastmilk Beast
Profound Lore

With last year's Eater of Birds, Cobalt solidified their standing as one of the strongest forces in the North American black metal scene, unleashing a unique and epic work of avant-war-metal art that turned heads and unhinged jaws. What's more, it was the first extreme metal album to feature an appearance by ex-Swans singer Jarboe.  Their blood flowing strong, the Colorado duo builds anticipation for their next full-length with this limited-edition stopgap release, a glorified EP entitled Landfill Breastmilk Beast. Clocking in at over 50 minutes, the four-song CD previews new and exclusive Cobalt material--most notably the "Ritual Use of Fire" track in its entirety. Initially broken up into three acoustic interludes on Eater of Birds, the complete version of "Ritual Use of Fire" is an epic 35+ minute atmospheric/ambient journey through a landscape of desolation, loneliness, and desperation.   Landfill Breastmilk Beast also includes a new Cobalt track, "Stomach," which will appear on the upcoming full-length due out in 2009, a cover of "Extinction" by crust punk anarchists Nausea, and a hidden experimental track.

Stratification by Wold

Wold

Stratification
Profound Lore

Not only is Wold among Canada's most notorious, provocative, and recognized black metal outfits, they are one of the most unique, surreal, and bizarre extreme music bands in the underground today.   By melding the primitive and raw aspects of black metal and noise, Wold have established quite a reputation. Treading wholly in their own realm, untouched by others, the band creates a sound unlike anything else; they have provoked and confused, while at the same time critics hail them as one of the most important acts in black metal.   Through waves of distorted noise, layers of buzzsaw guitar fuzz, hypnotic trance loops, and harsh screaming, Stratification takes Wold's brand of philosophical black metal terror to a new level that penetrates ever deeper within the psyche of the North American black metal scene. Not for the weak at heart, the album depicts the wrath of the violent, desolate winters that plague the prairie lands where the band dwells--a work of victorious, elite black metal art.

It was only a matter of time before Indianapolis, Indiana's The Gates of Slumber gained recognition as one of the most prominent true doom/heavy metal acts in the country. Spawned in the late '90s, the band emerged in 2004 after several demos with their debut, The Awakening, a breath of fresh air in the metal underground. The album harnessed their influences--Black Sabbath, Pentagram, St. Vitus, Cirith Ungol, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy--as a solid foundation for their sound. Its follow-up, Suffer No Guilt, was hailed as one of the best albums of its kind to come out in 2006.  With The Gates of Slumber securing a North American label for the first time, the much-anticipated Conqueror is the band's first album released domestically--and rightfully so, as it is their most accomplished, tight, and focused to date. Featuring surging melodies, passionate vocals, crushing riffs, wailing solos, and a storming rhythm section, the epic Conqueror is a landmark release in underground metal.  With plans to do some serious Stateside touring in support of Conqueror, The Gates Of Slumber will prove once more their standing as one of the most exceptional true heavy metal acts in North America today.

***Profound Lore’s second collaboration with NADJA comes in the form of the revamped, augmented, and altered Bliss Torn From Emptiness. Given the ultimate facelift from its original CDR release, and now expanded into a massive three-track plunge (with a mastering job via JAMES PLOTKIN), Bliss Torn From Emptiness is a sprawling and meticulously crafted epic where controlled ambience and static crawls through a murk of claustrophobic cerebral chaos. Yet through the sprawling mass of overbearing feedback and noise, Bliss Torn From Emptiness, just like Bodycage (and what has been a characteristic within Nadja’s music) also employs a character of pure celestial grace through an elegantly deposited sound picture that brings the cinematic vibe of Nadja to new heights. ***“Australia's enigmatic PORTAL have undoubtedly released their most oppressing work of art yet. Christened Outre, the new album sees the band take their unconventional sound and take it even more towards the beyond than what they conjured up with Seepia. With more of an emphasis on atmosfear and ambiance, this whirlwind of vortex-like surreal death metal terror is not for the weak at heart or for those who like their death metal safe, triggered, clean, sterile, and ultimately standard and boring. In what will go over the heads of the majority of trendy death metal fans today, Outre will once again prove that Portal are indeed outcasts in such a genre. And want nothing to do with it whatsoever... Eater Of Birds by Cobalt

Eater Of Birds
Profound Lore

After many years Profound Lore Records is proud to release the proper vinyl edition of Cobalt’s seminal “Eater Of Birds” album (which some people claim as the best Cobalt album), the album that truly made the band a unique force to be reckoned within the US extreme metal scene. At the time (July 2007) there was no band in extreme metal doing what Cobalt were doing. This vinyl re-issue / edition is the defining vinyl version of “Eater Of Birds” (admittedly, a very inferior version by another label was previously released on vinyl many years ago), re-mastered as the way it was meant to be.
