***CHRONIC SUBMISSION started to play during the classic first wave of T,O.H.C. They were kids and full of attitude. They were Shit disturbers—the stories that make a band legendary. They hated preppies, cops and probably anything that wasn't PUNK!! My kinda kids. Chronic Submission were known for playing faster than their contemporaries and were soon known for their stop on a dime precision, They perfected a start and stop sound that was amplified once bands such as M.D.C. and D.R.I. started to hit town. This is pure ‘80s hardcore mania. pressing of 300 copies.

Tomorrow Is Too Late by Direct Action

Direct Action

Tomorrow Is Too Late
Schizophrenic

***1984 was a pivotal moment for hardcore punk. After several years of rapid progression and intensification, outfits around the world were beginning to add a new heaviness to the sound, fortifying the speedy rush of the early eighties with a burlier, even more aggressive delivery. Taking the basic Discharge model as their template but amping up every element, groups like Britain’s Chaos UK and Varukers, Sweden’s Mob 47 and Anti-Cimex, America’s Poison Idea and COC, and Italy’s Raw Power and Wretched dropped 1984 records that marked the next step in this music’s evolution—and DIRECT ACTION's first tape was Canada’s contribution to that evolution. There’s little in the way of subtlety here, few concessions to nuance or melody: what Direct Action provide is sheer firepower, an attack of blazing speed and monochromatic aggro that reflects the group’s name perfectly in its simplicity and overwhelmingly energy, but nonetheless boasts a certain metallic heft absent from earlier hardcore outfits. Capturing the band raw and unrefined, the urgency and rage of this music make it the definitive Direct Action recording, and some of the most impressive punk rock that Toronto has ever produced. This new LP is the full session’s first-ever appearance on vinyl, complete with new title based on the TOHC book of the same name.

Empty Heads Poison Darts by Chronic Submission

Chronic Submission

Empty Heads Poison Darts
Schizophrenic

***CHRONIC SUBMISSION were a young band during the golden age of Toronto Hardcore—1982-84. The band turned heads when they hit their stage with their vicious stop on a dime thrash, They were amongst the youngest of the bands on the scene and quickly became an influential crossover style band. Tim Yo in 1984 reviewed their tape and wrote—“This is a viciously intense and powerful tape—it’s a full out and superbly recorded. 16 songs onslaught if thrash at its best”. Those words stand many years later. Chronic Submission's Empty Heads Poison Darts is now available on LP. Limited to 300 copies.

***Schizophrenic Records presents a slab of unhinged, lasting ephemera from Hamilton’s UNCONTROLLABLE URGE (a group comprised of ANGIE LANZA alongside three-quarters of the members of TV FREAKS). Freshly minted and naturally forged in free thought, UU emit a stash of ten reductive ear worms. Common restraints do not factor into this equation, their self-titled debut finds them grappling with the absurdity of life through a hazy lens. This is punk music for the post-alt-whatever leaners: songs for the overworked, misinformed and the perpetually connected. RIYL: Kleenex/Liliput, Wire, Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Gang of Four.

Dyot / The Pits by Tv Freaks

Tv Freaks

Dyot / The Pits
Schizophrenic

***On the tail of their third LP Bad Luck Charms, the latest buzzsaw guitar-rock barrage from TV FREAKS delivers two new essential cuts on March 11, 2016. Following a clutch of releases they’ve come home to Hamilton, ON’s long-running Schizophrenic Records. Recorded to eight-track in a single night, this two-song 7” reveals the band painting their typical wide-reaching emotional palette, or lackthereof. “D.Y.O.T.” is an epic mid-tempo jam, pulling sonic cues from anything and everything without compromise, seemingly less concerned with “punk” as a sound while still inevitably being just that. The flip side on the other hand is that, a frothing-at-the-mouth garage-punk burner more in line with something off the Rip Off Records catalogue of past. One of Canada’s best punk bands show off their range while continuing, as always, to do their own thing. Limited to 500 copies, all housed in a beautifully screen-printed die-cut sleeve.

***Some bands implode, but in the aftermath of Turbo 1, this band crushed themselves. Eventually they came back to life in Hamilton, and this hot little number is the result. Mixing part Black Flag, BIg Black, Mission Of Burma and Chrome can be a sometimes volatile mix…this is no different. Come on in, the water is scorching hot. You’ve been warned. ***Schizophrenic Records is going back to its roots and is pleased to present MAGIC CHRISTIAN featuring GORD LEWIS. The lineage on this 7-inch is pure history, in that Magic Christian are a San Francisco supergroup featuring FLAMIN’ GROOVIES’ CYRIL GORDON, BLONDIE’S CLEM BURKE, PLIMSOULS’ EDDIE MUNNOZ, and vocalist PAUL KOPFT. During a fun filled recording session at Hamilton in January 2009, Magic Christian teamed up with TEENAGE HEAD’s GORD LEWIS and Hamilton scene alumni DAVE RAVE and MICHAEL FONFARA to record Flamin’ Groovies’ “Teenage Head” and Teenage Head’s “Let’s Shake.” Cyril and Gord’s distinct guitar sounds respectively shaped generations of music and encouraged thousands of kids to pick up a guitar and rock out! This historic trip down memory lane was produced by CHRIS HOUSTON.

***Hamilton's TV FREAKS are busting at the seams with energy and spit. As if you were gazing at a school shooter's instagram account, the cover art here is nihilistically gorgeous with a child playing with dad's gun pressing it against his head, all smiles in the sun while the band's logo sprays out prophetically in white blood spatter from the other side. One way of making your Sunday afternoon in the park a real bummer. The sleeve speaks volumes about the music inside and that music is loud and scathing. The vocals are just as distorted as the guitar.  There is a smug cynicism that sits on top of every song. An angry din of frustrated chord pounding, shouting and the drumming like they're trying to stab through cymbals and skins. Perhaps the last minute of the record is relative to the next frame of the cute kid in overalls playing roulette on the grass? Whatever it is, it's a glorious mess and leaves the same type of experience that you'd get out of a Flipper album. TV Freaks do a great job of taking some classic and modern influences to come up with their own unique and fresh sound. This is pure punk rock that looks better in blood on a guitar than spray painted on a leather jacket and I'm sure if the gods of good taste get off their asses you'll see both.
