They weren’t as influential as Pavement, as industrious as Guided By Voices, as idiosyncratic as Unrest, or as ubiquitous as Superchunk. But the part that Versus played in the indie rock underground of the 1990s can’t be overlooked. In some ways, Versus were the quintessential indie rock band.” —Pitchfork Versus are pioneers of the early ’90s indie rock revolution. Formed in 1990 in New York City by Detroit-bred brothers Richard and Ed Baluyut and Texan Fontaine Toups, Versus named themselves after Mission Of Burma’s debut album. After recording a few singles on various labels, Let’s Electrify! was self-released by the band on CD and was out-of-print shortly thereafter. It was the first and last release on their Remora imprint. This is the first time it will be available on vinyl and the first time in 28 years that it will be available on any format. The six-song Let’s Electrify is their debut and was released September of 1993 just eight months before their stellar debut album, The Stars Are Insane. This is just as good and while it has six songs, it clocks in at a healthy 25 minutes. It was recorded by Adam Lasus (Yo La Tengo, Helium, Lilys). Remastered in 2021 by Scott Anthony of Storybook Sound. This marks a return to the Teen-Beat label for the band after stints with Merge and Caroline. The original line up is still together together and still based in New York. They released a new album in 2019 on the...

A documentary film from Mark Robinson (Unrest, Teen-Beat), about his favorite rock star, Butch Willis. Butch Willis is a Washington, D.C. rock legend. Born and raised in 1960s suburban Maryland, he came of age in the late ’70s post-hippie subculture. After sharing an apartment with infamous local music icon Root Boy Slim, Butch was inspired to become a rock’n’ roll star himself. The unique and unusual brand of “outsider music” that Butch Willis & The Rocks created captivated the local music scene beginning with their appearance at the seminal Primitive Night in 1984. Amateur On Plastic chronicles Butch’s life and career from the beginning all the way through to present day. It features a host of Butch-appointed band managers Joe Lee (Joe’s Record Paradise), Jeff Mentges (No Trend), Jeff Krulik (Heavy Metal Parking Lot), and director Mark Robinson (Unrest/Teen-Beat). Also co-starring is Al Breon, the Rocks’ innovative “throat guitarist.” The film combines archival footage, interviews, and performances of his hit songs “Drugs,” “The Garden’s Outside,” “TV’s From Outer Space,” and “The Girl’s on My Mind.” Amateur On Plastic also parallels the 1990’s era of seminal indie record label Teen-Beat. Behind-the-scenes glimpses of the label’s concerts and private parties provide much of the background and feature members of the bands Unrest, Versus, Tuscadero and more. “Butch Willis has quickly moved into the most select of rock’n’roll territories, that of the inspirational primitive. Undaunted, he dreams the rock’n’roll dream.” —Washington Post “In the mind of Butch Willis, he and his...

***Singer & songwriter JONNY COHEN founded THE LOVE MACHINE in 1987 after moving into a Silver Spring, Maryland house he shared with DC rock legend Root Boy Slim. The house was the site of frequent basement jam sessions with Unrest, Butch Willis & The Rocks, & other local bands. Those sessions inspired Jonny to form his own band. After hearing a tape of the song “I’m Not An Aorexic,” Teen Beat released their debut album in 1989. Other local label Simple Machines followed with a 7" single. This is the band’s 1st album in 19 years. Jonny Cohen evokes the outsider music of Daniel Johnston, Jad Fair, & The Shaggs. Comes in full color digipak. (STREET DATE - 1/15/2016)

***Debut from D.C. instrumentalists is 16 tracks that defy genre and yet each track seems to have a genre of it’s own. Underlying each song is a strong sense of pop melody with an experimental backbone. Their sound has the mysteriousness of The Residents, the instrumental quirkyness of The Books, the melodic notes of The Velvet Underground, the badass-ness of Suicide, and the excitement of Captain Beefheart. ***Former semi-pro skateboard and current organic farmer/guitarist/singer/composer, LAWRENCE MCDONALD, releases his fifth album under the moniker BELLS OF. The band started off with members of Dischord bands FAITH and RITES OF SPRING, but Lawrence has always remained the one constant member. The band has evolved into something not at all hardcore, but something like a song-based free jazz indie-pop band. Lightning-quick guitar work, unusual melodies and spoken/sung scratchy vocal delivery comes together as experimental-improv pop music. (STREET DATE - 4/27/2010)

***This new album combines TREVOR KAMPMANN’s endless energy with his great electronic melodies fleshed out here with spastic guitars and piano. Kampmann is somewhat musically prescient. As proof, you need only give HOLLAND’s 1997 album Your Orgasm a cursory listen and then jump ten years hence and listen to anything by The Postal Service. Jettison the rough sonic edges on that early disc and trade out his sexually explicit lyrics for some saccharine ‘emotional’ ones and you’re onto the recipe. (STREET DATE - 3/23/2010)
