***"Vinny Earley is the brain (floating in a jar) behind the LA based band Vaguess. You might have seen him around. He's pretty tall, kind of looks like a mix between Hulk Hogan and Bart Simpson and is probably standing in the corner of a house party flicking lit matches at the wall, and talking about how GG Allin wasn't even really that gross. In reality, Earley would more likely be seen surfing, skating, telling a hilarious fart joke, or ripping guitar or drums in one of a handful of heady bands in the LA scene like Diode, 2m8o, and Scam Likely. Vaguess, however, is Vinny's lifeblood. Since 2012, the band has released a dozen or so LPs and EPs, touring extensively with a rotating cast of Earley's close buds building a cult following. Vinny fearlessly traverses genres, seamlessly switching between glitchy synth punk, jangly art rock, and twangy cowpunk melded together with his singular approach to songwriting, production, and unique voice. On his latest release Thanks No Thanks, Vaguess joins forces with Under the Gun Records embarking on an odyssey of bigger and bolder production, infectious melody, and introspective songwriting propelled by dialed, head-bobbing rhythms. With Thanks No Thanks, the vibe of the music shifts in controlled bipolarity as the songs flow from snotty punk tune to heart-felt ballad to dancy Indie banger. Bite My Tongue follows up on the project's 2021 debut Glad To Be Forgotten, with four new songs due August 24 through LA's Under The Gun Records and German label Turbo Discos. While conceived as a lockdown distraction for Patrick McEachnie, the project's since blossomed into a fully realized four-piece. ***"Pressure Pin is a project that essentially came out of nowhere, from one Kenny Smith, the drummer of the new disco-art punk group La Sécurité. As Pressure Pin, his debut EP, Superficial Feature, is a four-song practice of art-punk and post-hardcore new wave and it’s frenetically mesmerizing. It’s a bit Squid and New Fries and I was hooked right as the weird pitch guitar and thick bass picked up on the opening track 'A New Movie.' The switch between the almost depressing robotic vocals and hysterical screams is lightning in a bottle. The mixing is also fantastic with a cacophony of horns under scratchy chugging guitars. The vocals also come off as public advisory statements as in 'Complete Impulse Directive,' where Smith categorizes exactly what is wrong with society, rhyming in prose that seems like a pure stream of consciousness with a surreal agitated edge. He finally left the swamplands of Florida for Portland and is gearing up for a massive tour with fellow freaks and UTG alumni Gee Tee and Research Reactor Corp. Before getting out of the hellhole, Kyle recorded one last punk rock EP before giving the middle finger to the sunshine state for good. Entirely produced by Kyle (Art, Production, Songwriting, the usual trilogy) Cherry Radio sees Kyle exploring sweeter melodies and less wired riffage. Whereas the self titled LP sounded like a panic attack, this EP is more like a picnic with friends in the middle of a volcano.
