***AVAILABLE AGAIN!!! A central figure in Boston's sound art vanguard, Brendan Murray specifically shapes his repetitions and sinewy tonalities within the rigors of compositional frameworks and temporal restraints, setting himself apart from the conventional wisdom that drone-based music is an open-ended exercise into the "realm of the infinite." A single crescendo terminating at the end of forty-nine minutes, this epic investigates subtle harmonics and overtones expressed through layered slippages of pure sound conceived through guitar, analog synthesis, and plenty of digital manipulation. A worthy parallel to the work of Phill Niblock, Eliane Radigue, and Iannis Xenakis.

Nothing Else Matters (1-sided 12”) by Tiedye

Tiedye

Nothing Else Matters (1-sided 12”)
Italians Do It Better

***TIEDYE are part of the new crop of Scandanavian disco groups that have been making waves lately. Sharing the same attitude (and sometimes gigs) as Studio , Lindstrom, Todd Terje, and all those dudes- Tiedye are taking the notion of a live disco band to new dimensions. Not simply just a guy and a laptop making dance music, Tiedye is an actual band. Their debut single is a cover of "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica. A slow, balaeric/cosmic disco slayer! This is one-sided 12-inch with laser-etched B-side. One-time pressing of 1,000 copies.

***Between post-metal, psychedelic post-rock and whatever ever other post-genre label gets writers juiced comes Leeds based riff merchants HUMANFLY. Formed in the early part of the decade and including people from well known Brits CANVAS, Humanfly offer six vast, epic, metallic journeys through huge NeurISIS style heaviness and Pink Floyd via Mogwai atmospherics. Tunes like “Echoes Of The Roman Empire” and “Tjanargata / A Passage To Reykjavik” are given ample space to breathe and build before inevitably crashing into a mountain of mammoth, celestial volume. With the shortest track more than 8 minutes and the longest over 13, each song is a two or three part saga within itself. Vocals are used sparingly focusing primarily on building thematically through the music. Not yet well-known outside their native UK, the release of II by 20 Buck Spin will introduce Humanfly to a larger audience and push the band to the forefront of the post-post-rockmetal “genre.” (STREET DATE - 4/08/2008)

Feel Good Record of the Year by No Use For A Name

No Use For A Name

Feel Good Record of the Year
Fat Wreck Chords

***With more than 20 years under their belt, NO USE FOR A NAME are widely recognized as one of independent music’s most dominant and everlasting forces. Their ninth proper studio release, The Feel Good Record of the Year, serves to solidify their firm grip on the underground music scene. Laden with the perfect marriage of aggressive guitar work and the ear-catching, melodic hooks that NUFAN have become known for, this release promises to satiate long time fans and endear a plethora of new ones. The band recorded in Ft. Collins, CO at the Blasting Room with legendary producer BILL STEVENSON (Descendents, Black Flag, Only Crime). The production value and song quality are unsurpassed by any of their previous releases. Understandably the excitement surrounding this album is growing at a rapid pace and will only continue to build as the band embarks on the US FAT Tour 2008 with NOFX, followed by an extensive European tour and more dates in both the US and Japan.

Sci-fi bristles with cautionary tales of gene-splicing and its freakish consequences, but in an Alternative Tentacles tome, "freakish" is a desirable trait. Triclops!, a result of SF Bay Area inter-band splicing (featuring members of Bottles and Skulls and the Lower Forty-Eight fortified by personnel from AT stalwarts Victims Family and Fleshies), assaults the public with the best acid punk around today. Don't let their pedigree fool you: Triclops! turns the dial down on the bellicose punk/hardcore you might expect, instead opting for meandering yet tension-filled psychedelic epics.  The seven songs on Out of Africa, their first full-length, are reminiscent of the golden hits from the 1990s Touch and Go or Amphetamine Reptile catalogs, tweaked out on the exhilarating paranoia typical of America in the early aughts. Distorted vocals, oscillating bass lines, and jittery guitars form a nervous, seasick swath over the plodding drums. Songs unfurl into worlds of their own with byzantine lyrics--the lament of an Iraqi museum curator in one, an ode to the botfly (a tropical parasite) in another--while the music explores variations in tone and urgency. Positive reviews followed their EP on Sick Room and picture-disc 7-inch on GSL; expect gushing praises for this fine morsel of acid punk-prog.  "The Triclops! version of punk rock destabilizes preconceptions with every twisted minute. Best live band in San Francisco? Provided you like your music unpredictable, aggressive, and more than a little bit threatening--yes." --SF Weekly   "Super proggy acid-punk ... breaking down into some surprisingly melodic...

The Julie Mittens are a Dutch power trio who specialize in extended improvisation at extreme volume. Inspired by John Coltrane's The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording and the knowledge that Fushitsusha has more to do with Thelonius Monk than Blue Cheer, guitarist Aart-Jan Schakenbos, bassist Michael van Dam, and drummer Leo Fabriek consistently wreak havoc with lavish, textural, speaker-blowing meltdown jams; they surge with psychedelic power and a stellar rhythm section on the four studio recordings here.  About the name--it allegedly means something to the members of the group, but they won't say what. A Dutch thing? Just don't ask the guitar player to see his pick.  "... guitarist Aart-Jan Schakenbos, bassist Michael van Dam and drummer Leo Fabriek walk a harrowing path between amplifier anarchy and balanced interaction, never failing to make the two meet. Schakenbos provides the skyscraping as he warps and mutilates single notes with the centrifugal force of massive feedback. Van Dam either drops terrifying bass bombs that fill the vacuum Schakenbos leaves in his wake, drones ominously, or dialogues. Fabriek, however, harnesses the others' energy, as he resists the urge to flail away, and instead inserts a fill when it increases tension, thumps steadily when a groove is needed, or colors when space beckons." --Matthew Wuethrich, Dusted  "A kind of spiritual anarchy surfaces through the distorted bedlam, illuminating a full spectrum of frequencies which gives their most feverish moments the effect of coma-inducing psychical bliss landing somewhere between head banging and...

Talent is an asset and Detroit's Dirtbombs surely have it. To accompany their new album, We Have You Surrounded, is this brand new 7-inch single on which the band pays homage to label-mates (and one of their favorite bands) Sparks. Side A is "Sherlock Holmes" (a cut also featured on the new album) which was originally released on Sparks' Angst In My Pants. Side B, available exclusively on this single, is "Nothing To Do," a song originally released on the 1975 Big Beat LP.   This single comes in a handsome color picture sleeve, which also pays tribute to Sparks' record covers.

Wrapping one's head around what exactly Capsule does on their debut album is damn-near impossible, as these three post-ADD maniacs have created one of the strangest heavy-music albums in years. Blue is a confounding conglomeration of blasting time-signatures, galloping punk spirit, and a ghostly vocal chorus that buzzes through a mountain of guitar and bass. Blurry, buried shouts are surrounded by thunderous songs played at every tempo in the punk and metal spectra. Intricate melodies in bizarre tunings sneak their way into an overall unnerving amalgamation of genres, creating an anxiety-filled album of fevered beauty. Capsule sounds like no other band, and this is the most unique and one of the most interesting albums Robotic Empire has released to date.  Attempting to keep up with the packaging precedent set by Miami brethren Torche's In Return 10-inch+CD release, Capsule's Blue only comes as two formats together, with a deluxe gatefold jacket housing both a CD and 12-inch vinyl record. A high-gloss spot varnish accompanies this full-color, die-cut jacket with printed black interior. The minimalistic design perfectly contrasts Capsule's varied creations on this stunning debut.

Hobo Handshake by Black Twig Pickers

Black Twig Pickers

Hobo Handshake
Vhf

Hobo Handshake, the fourth full-length from the Black Twig Pickers, finds a slightly reshuffled lineup and a renewed emphasis on kicking out raw, percussive takes on both traditional Appalachian and original material. With Ralph Berrier Jr.'s retirement from the group, Mike Gangloff has added fiddle to his already considerable arsenal, and along with stalwart guitarist Isak Howell, brought in Nathan Bowles (Pelt, Spiral Joy Band) on percussion and several guests who make substantial contributions to the party.   The Twigs work the fine line between the Friday night old-time dance party and the wellspring of grim and evocative tragedy that runs through the tradition, delivering these laments, travelogues, and wild whoops with sawing, rocking joy. This is a sprawling collection, with visceral group takes on "Crossing the James," "Cherry River Line," and "Old Joe Clark." Charlie Parr and Lane Prekker join the crew on "Last Kind Word Blues," "Train 45" and "Twin Sisters" (first essayed by Pelt way back in '98) with Parr's amazing, ragged voice leading the charge over Bowles and Prekker's driving percussion. Along with the full group material, the Twigs throw in other welcome oddities such as Howell's Fahey-like "At the Head of Every Creek," "P.E.A. Vine Blues," an arrangement of a tune from Portuguese Africa, and a book-ending solo version of "Crossing the James," with Gangloff on baritone banjo.

Blood Pressure Sessions by Naked On The Vague

Naked On The Vague

Blood Pressure Sessions
Siltbreeze

Lucy Phelan and M.P. Hopkins hail from Sydney, Australia. Behind a basic framework of keyboard, bass, and vocals (and all manner of tinkered-with percussion) Naked on the Vague's distinct aggregate of sound calls to mind everything from SPK to Mars and beyond. Or, as they're fond of calling them in Philly, "the Death Star version of Times New Viking."  Originally released in 2007 on CD by the fearless Australian Dual Plover label, The Blood Pressure Sessions ventures into a darker realm than their debut 7-inch (also on Dual Plover) had erroneously suggested. Propelled by the sharp, rhythmic snare drum beat and anchored by thunderous, fuzzed bass-lines and stinging, swinging organ and synth fills, Phelan and Hopkins take turns rounding out the vocal duties, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Betraying a gallows wit, the band refers to their music as "apocalyptic pop," which could be construed as both drowning and waving.  Coming from the label that brought the world both The Dead C and Shadow Ring, Naked On The Vague is a perfect fit in the Siltbreeze discography. Look for them at the upcoming SXSW and on tour throughout the US in the spring of 2008.

Located within the Trapani Province of Sicily, Oper'azione Nafta considers their self-described "un-rock" as "a blowjob from Luigi Russolo." There's little doubt the great Futurist author of the The Art Of Noises manifesto would be anything but chuffed by such salacious bravado. Indeed, the trio pours on the racket and sounds like they were hatched in a custom-built Russolo intonarumori. Successfully putting the on back in bonkers, Oper'azione Nafta doles out only The Berserk, which might be why, at any given time, their unstoppable onslaught taps into rock/improv fizz a la Sun City Girls, Etron Fou Leloublan or the Butthole Surfers, various FMP blat, and MEV-like electronic scramble. When they claim "We are Oper'azione Nafta and we kill Bambi!" who among us would question it? Besides, a nice bowl of Sicilian-styled venison ragout would really hit the spot.  Released in a vinyl-only, one-time edition of 500, Cavuru is the band's debut release.

Sharron Kraus is a singer/musician/songwriter with a gift for beautiful and heartbreaking songs from a deep-seated storytelling mythology. Her music, rooted in the folk traditions of England and Appalachia, is characterized by soil-rich vocals, haunting banjo, fine acoustic guitar, and visionary word-craft. Kraus's songs are populated by a carnival array of fatally charismatic characters, telling tales of enslavement, perversion, incest, obsession, love and death, and her live performances are stark, compelling, and delicate. She is like the roving storyteller, bringing tales of terror, sadness and joy to a stranger's hearth on a dark and stormy night.  The Fox's Wedding, Kraus's stunning new album, offers eleven original songs and a cover of "Trice Toss These Oaken Ashes" written by Thomas Campion.   Kraus has been featured in The Wire, Dirty Linen, New Folk Sounds, Arthur Magazine, Ptolemaic Terrascope and Broken Face. She has been interviewed on BBC Radio 3 and recorded sessions for BBC Radio Scotland, Freakzone on Radio 6, and independent radio stations across the US. Her fanbase includes veteran folkies Shirley Collins and Archie Fisher as well as indie figureheads Michael Gira, David Tibet, and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore.

"... one LP what got a lot've play while I was gone was the debut by Who's Your Favorite Son, God? and man, is it a keeper! See'em live down at SXSW was great, but the record fans the flames of hybridized (post) prog-swoggle and (proto) metal-mania like just about nobody else. What with this talk about brain transplants 'n' all, Who's Your Favorite Son, God? could almost be described as a union of Magma (mind) and MX-80 Sound (matter). I don't know about you, but I was jonesin' to hear somethin screamin' after Crowd Conrol (to no avail) and hey, if Christian Zander had kidnapped Rich Stim and Bruce Anderson, perhaps Attahk might've sounded as rad as this album. Who's Your Favorite Son, God? ably combine the dramatic and operatic pretense of Magma with the cool, aggressive delivery of MX-80 Sound and if you're thinkin' "that's somethin I gotta hear," you're right. My mom (remember her?) says they sound like Mahavishnu Orchestra should've if they were men (once you hear this you'll know what she means). Even the little Greek dude who delivers my beer opined "everything that Heavy The World isn't, Who's Your Favorite Son, God? is." And who am I to argue with a Greek? They invented civilization, buster! What have you ever done?" --Roland Woodbe, Siltblog

Dead Fires & The Lonely Spark by Last Harbour

Last Harbour

Dead Fires & The Lonely Spark
Little Red Rabbit

‘Dead Fires & the Lonely Spark’ is the third album from Manchester-based collective Last Harbour, following previous highly-acclaimed releases and recent tours with Willard Grant Conspiracy and Mark Mulcahy. The seven-piece have returned with their most ambitious record yet, which veers from elegantly orchestrated soundscapes to full-blown electric dramas, encompassing birth, marriage and death along the way. Working with producer Richard Formby (Spacemen 3, Herman Dune, Dakota Suite), Last Harbour have turned their backs on the digital revolution, instead using antique equipment to record in glorious analogue onto 2” tape, creating a warm and atmospheric record.  At first, ‘Dead Fires & the Lonely Spark’ might appear to be concerned primarily with the quiet disintegration of relationships, and it certainly focuses on the violence and tenderness of simple human fallibility. There are riotous and drunken weddings (‘Saint Luminous Bride’, ‘No-one Ever Said’) and lives torn apart by things done and those unsaid (‘The Further Field’). And, whilst there is no central narrative or character and each song inhabits its own environment, this collection of songs could thematically be considered a modern ‘play for today’, concerned as it is with social and moral conscience. But, it is also about how people are dwarfed by things beyond their control, and how they can be held prisoner or set free by circumstance. Primarily using instrumentation that might traditionally be associated with folk music, Last Harbour hammer and sculpt their sound into unusual and beguiling forms. Understated string arrangements (‘Broken Nail’) and wheeling pedal...

Gabriel’s Horn by Monkeywrench

Monkeywrench

Gabriel’s Horn
Birdman

Celebrating 17 years of a great idea, Monkeywrench returns with a new studio album, their first since 2000's Electric Children. Putting together the progenitors of the modern underground--Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney fame, Tim Kerr (Poison 13, King Sound Quartet, The Big Boys), Gas Huffer's Tom Price, and Martin Bland (Lubricated Goat)--Monkeywrench is nothing less than a punk/grunge supergroup.  The band kicks out the same glorious, fuzz-laden mess that characterizes Mudhoney's work, but there are notable differences here: Monkeywrench has a twisted take on everything from country to psychedelic and offers impressive bluesy guitar playing. There is a Texas roots taste spread through the tracks and the rhythm section lays down a fast and furious groove (Turner's bass playing is outstanding) while dueling guitars engage in a race to the finish line. Then there's Arm's influential rasp--an unkempt, sneering yowl. It's comforting to know these gents haven't settled down.

"The third time's a charm" usually means something has to get screwed up twice before it gets done right. But what if the first two tries are really pretty good? The third one is just so much more... charming.  That's what the third Psycho And The Birds release, We've Moved, is all about. Waaaaay back in mid-2006 (we're talking "Bob years" here), Robert Pollard released two Psycho And The Birds albums. The first, the full-length All That Is Holy, was followed by the EP Check Your Zoo. The concept surrounding Psycho And The Birds is that Pollard writes songs and records them on his infamous boombox (into which every song he has written since the early '90s has been sung), and sends them off to producer/multi-instrumentalist/visionary Todd Tobias, who adds band's worth of music .  This time around they totally nail the process, and if the music world allowed artists like Pollard a chance to have a hit, this album would be chock-full of them. "I Love a Revolution" and "Enon Beach" are filled with undeniable likeability and pop goodness. A perfect combo of playful lyrics and flawless arrangement makes it hard to imagine that one entire half of the song was recorded on an $27 boombox. Pollard even pulls out some lyrics in "She Tears Out," first written, he says, as a kid.  In some ways, Psycho And The Birds are to Robert Pollard's solo albums what Robert Pollard solo albums are to Guided By Voices...

***Suishou no Fune originated in Tokyo's fertile psychedelic scene. After landing a spot on PSF's Tokyo Flashback 5 and releasing Where the Spirits Are in 2006, the group ventured out from Japan and took every opportunity to play across the United States and Europe. During one of these trips in the spring of 2007, the group-- down to the crucial duo of Pirako and Kurenai-- went into a recording studio for a few days and laid down eight massive new tracks. Two tracks, chosen by the group—"Becoming a Flower" and "Till We Meet Again"—appear on this special vinyl edition. Much about Suishou no Fune has had to do with volume, but this new set of duets adds forays into starker songwriting and a languid serenity that works to make one feel as if it were necessary to hold one's breath through the entire album.

We Have You Surrounded by Dirtbombs

Dirtbombs

We Have You Surrounded
In The Red

The Dirtbombs' fourth full-length is jam-packed with more of their soulful, Detroit-style, fuzztone-fueled garage-punk-pop-rock 'n' roll that has made them a popular favorite with club-goers around the globe. Mick Collins and his merry band of miscreants' twelve slices of sonic thud kick the party into high gear and show off a vast array of unexpected influences. In fact, the opening track has been acknowledged by Collins as his tribute to Mark E. Smith and The Fall.  The Dirtbombs are as known for their tasteful selection of cover tunes as much their stunning originals, and this record carries on the tradition with fantastic takes on songs by comic artist Alan Moore, Portland, Oregon stalwarts Dead Moon, and labelmates Sparks. That said, the originals here are what you really want to write home about. From the Stooge-oid "Ever Lovin' Man" to the finger-poppin' "Indivisible" to the extendo free-form psych jam of "Race To The Bottom" to the Euro-pop of "La Fin Du Monde," The Dirtbombs prove once again they are a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with who will have no problem outliving the NME-sponsored hype of their hometown way after ten more trends and haircuts have been built up and torn down.

Three years have passed since Black Oni (Ipecac). Four years since Five Suns (Cuneiform). The new album by Guapo is finally here and thus concludes the recondite triptych. Each record has taken on new musical hues and offered disparate ideas and perspectives. However, an upheaval in the line-up, which has been anchored most recently by Daniel O'Sullivan, Matthew Thompson, and David Smith, triggered a change in course when Thompson left the band just prior to the release of Black Oni in 2005.  In the interim O'Sullivan and Smith have been active with an abundance of other projects. Both members perform in the antique-prog band Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses (Mimicry). O'Sullivan's work with AEthenor (VHF), Mothlite (Southern), Grumbling Fur (Aurora Borealis) as well as moonlighting in the live line-up of Sunn O))) has been keeping him extremely busy. Smith created a large-scale multi-media installation for which he made a soundtrack with O'Sullivan and Antti Uusimaki under The Stargazers Assistant moniker. Smith also plays with members of Coil, Cyclobe and Shockheaded Peters in the Amal Gamal Ensemble. Despite these distractions, Guapo has maintained their focus, and Elixirs has been three years in the making. It is unequivocally their most poignant and powerful work to date.  The album transcends any musical antecedents for which Guapo have been acknowledged in the past. Instead, the music here explores the outermost regions of psychedelic composition. Flickers of Popol Vuh, This Heat, Magma, Third Ear Band, Moondog, and early-'70s Miles Davis are present, as the dense...

Little Green Onion Man by Takeovers

Takeovers

Little Green Onion Man
Off

This freaky little beast, the new Takeovers EP, Little Green Onion Man, is a nice mini-movie comprised of four songs (three of which are unreleased Robert Pollard compositions) that warmly straddle the loosey-goosey psych-pop sounds of their first album, Turn To Red, as well as the white-knuckled rock pomp of their second, Bad Football. From the spooky freak-beat of "Rich Man's Girl" to the Ann Arbor beating that "Wigstomper 07" dishes out, you might not want to listen to this in the dark. Also along for the tight little visit of their twisted, lop-sided tunage are John Moen of Stephen Malkmus/The Decemberists, Sam Coomes of Quasi/Blues Goblins and Brian Berg of 44 Long. Little Green Onion Man is pressed in a limited edition of 1000 CDs and 450 copies of 7-inch vinyl.

***The second Profound Lore release from JORDAN BUCK (aka WRATH OF THE WEAK). Alogon is a noisy, loud, repetitive, hypnotic, obsessive, unforgiving, and powerful work of raw ambient black metal art. For fans of Xasthur, Burzum, Weakling, Ildjarn, Velvet Cacoon, etc. Bow down.

Live Target Video 1980-’81 by Flipper

Flipper

Live Target Video 1980-’81
Target Vid

***From the archives of SF's famous Target Video comes this monster release from the classic original early ‘80s line up of FLIPPER. Capturing extreme and scorching performances from 1980 and 1981, this DVD helps form a picture of the band that slowed down punk rock and made the kids suffer in the "louder faster" days of hardcore. An intense blend of noise, punk and drone music coupled with an in your face attitude and performance style made Flipper one of most "out there" bands of the early ‘80s scene. This DVD features stellar performances from Berkeley and the Kezar (San Francisco) and is a (mostly) unreleased and incredible snapshot into the other side of American Hardcore.

Blackest Medicine by Folk Spectre

Blackest Medicine
Woodsist

***Solo tunes by PETE NOLAN of the MAGIK MARKERS, GHQ, VANISHING VOICE, VIRGIN EYE BLOOD BROTHERS, etc. This is music from the American Underground. The feeling is dark and fucked up and somehow sublime. A solid statement of loner homemade goodness. A pop statement from behind a veil of dirt. Black vinyl with silk screened covers. Limited to 500.

***Stevo sez: "3 new songs from both of these Chicagoland bands. The Arrivals have a new record on Recess called "Marvels of Industry" that I highly recommend. I’ll use the shallow plug of “Paddy from D4 is in this band now and on this record” for those of you who enjoy such things, because it’s in your best musical interest to buy this thing no matter what pretenses it’s under. The Brokedowns have no Paddy, but they do have a record on Thick called "New Brains for Everyone" - check it out!"
