Artificial Brain

Drawing frequent comparisons to mind-altering progressive death metal acts, Artificial Brain have distinguished themselves from their peers through an emphasis on rich, melancholic melodic figures, contextualizing the harmonic and emotive qualities of black metal within a more aggressive death metal framework. Dissonance is threaded through elegiac, otherworldly chordal structures; saturnine tremolo melodies float along in the high registers of the instruments; guitars and bass traverse distinct paths before locking into harmonic orbit. These elements, anchored by blast beats and bellowing guttural vocals, create a sense of contrast that has come to characterize the band’s sound over the past decade.  Artificial Brain, the group’s final recording with original vocalist Will Smith (Afterbirth), is the terminal instalment in a trilogy that includes 2014’s Labyrinth Constellation and 2017’s Infrared Horizon. Smith’s lyrics on this eponymous album take a retrospective look at the sci-fi mythology developed on the previous records, using these ideas to explore themes of isolation, madness, and the inexorability of nature. Rounding out the recording is an impressive roster of guest performers, including death metal legends Mike Browning (Nocturnus A.D.) and Luc Lemay (Gorguts) as well as long time collaborators Paulo Paguntalan (Miasmatic Necrosis) and Colin Marston (Krallice).

With their second full-length album Infrared Horizon, NY-based death metal band Artificial Brain take their brand of brutal, guttural yet technical and ambient sci-fi death metal to a new galaxial plateau, much more advanced than their lauded debut album Labyrinth Constellation. Once again produced by Colin Marson (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Krallice) at The Thousand Caves, this latest (featuring art by Adam Burke) sees the band traveling towards a sonic realm where the music has become more dissonant, atmospheric, and just overall more otherworldly. The lyrics and themes deal with the concept of a dystopian future in which robots and cyborgs have outlived human beings. Conceived in 2011 by guitarist Dan Gargiulo (Revocation) and vocalist Will Smith (ex-Biolich), rounded out by bass player Samuel Smith (Luminous Vault), guitarist Jon Locastro, and drummer Keith Abrami, the band dropped their debut album on Profund Lore in 2014 to wide praise within the circles of death metal. Along with touring, the band would also have their music played and were even name dropped on multiple occasions in the popular CBS television shows Elementary and Limitless. This latest album sees the sonic architecture laid down by the band go further into the beyond and infinite.

Labyrinth Constellation by Artificial Brain

Artificial Brain

Labyrinth Constellation
Profound Lore

***OUT OF PRINT, LAST WAREHOUSE COPIES FOUND!!!  Now available on vinyl! New York band Artificial Brain was formed in 2011 by guitarist Dan Gargiulo of Revocation and vocalist Will Smith of Biolich (a now-defunct ensemble that included several members who went on to form Castevet). Following up a well received demo and two-song EP, Artificial Brain unleashes their debut full-length Labyrinth Constellation via Profound Lore—a devastating work destined to forge a much-deserved reputation for the band in the American death metal scene. Like such predecessors as Nocturnus, Artificial Brain incorporates sci-fi elements into their twisted, guttural sound. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Colin Marston (of Krallice, Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, etc.) in his Thousand Caves studios, Labyrinth Constellation offers a unique take on the genre, with stunning cover artwork painted by Paolo “Madman” Girardi to complement the dark and dissonant death metal. A cosmic dose of complex brutality, it fits neatly alongside the other denizens of Profound Lore’s twisted death metal contingent: Portal, Mitochondrion, Grave Miasma, Abyssal, and newcomers Auroch and Chthe’ilist.
