Over the last several years West Coast band Ash Borer have been recognized as one of the most prominent and active bands in the U.S. black metal scene. Following their critically praised second album Cold Of Ages from 2012, The Irrepassable Gate is produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Marissa Nadler, Wolves In The Throne Room), and is their most dynamic and sprawling album to date. With Dunn at the engineering helm, enhancing the wall-of-sound harshness and their signature expansive time-stretching tracks, the band delivers their most grandiose work. Now, Ash Borer and Profound Lore Records have conspired to reissue the band’s acclaimed self-titled debut, initially released in limited quantities on vinyl and cassette only and now out of print. Available on CD for the first time ever, the 2011 album captures the vitriolic, ambient black metal fury for which Ash Borer is quickly becoming renowned. Arcata’s Ash Borer formed several years ago and in just a short time was recognized as one of the most prominent black metal bands from California. With a style of raw black metal that is bleak and atmospheric as well as harsh and searing, the group is aligned with such elite artists as the (now defunct) Weakling, Xasthur and Leviathan, along with the Black Twlight Circle (Volhan, Arizmenda, Dolovotre, etc.) and the Rhinocervs cult (Odz Manouk and Tukaaria). Their first demo, released in 2009, was just a mere glimpse of the coming sonic storm unleashed over the following years: a split EP with Santa Cruz’s Fell Voices, an acclaimed self-titled debut album, and a series of decimating live shows.  The band’s new album Cold of Ages finds Ash Borer at the height of their powers, one of the most important acts hailing from the American scene alongside the likes of Negative Plane, Avichi, Inquisition, and the aforementioned Black Twilight Circle and Rhinocervs horde. A darker and much more devastating work than the debut, Cold of Ages is a surging, twisted, primal and sprawling epic and will find its place among the most prominent black metal releases of the year.
