Sarah Coolidge is back with WITCH, the Double EP. Released by indie label Rocks in Your Head, WITCH combines two EPs recorded three years apart into an intimate encounter with a singular artist.On the heels of Coolidge’s debut album Call Me When You Get There (2023), WITCH showcases a newfound swagger and maturity. Coolidge swirls the everyday details of her life and relationships into lo-fi garage-pop anthems, sometimes detouring into some downright bluesy Americana licks before threading everything back together with the band’s trademark fuzzy slacker riffs. Bolstered by Tennessee Mowrey’s sturdy infectious backup vocals and lively intricate basslines, Coolidge invites us into her rich cinematic universe. It’s a world populated with MFA students studying “the art of artistry,” long road trips, summer detours, phone calls to old friends, and the maddening, comforting, perpetual companionship of her own internal monologue. Her lyricism sways comfortably between a witty self-aware antifolk sensibility and wide-eyed sincerity. Mixed by Maryum Qudus and Beau Sorenson, WITCH has a warm vibrant sound, and drummers Swen Hendrickson and Chris Olson give the songs an understated rollicking restraint.Coolidge’s casually eviscerating guitar riffs tangle throughout—playful, angsty, and earnest.
