“These were carefree times. We were young enough to put our bodies to the test every night on the seven-by-seven-mile patch of the Bay. The endless wars seemed less at home. Songs were hanging off the branches heavy, plump and threatening to rot on the vine if they weren’t polished and put to tape. The band was on their third live drummer but the lineup in The Fresh & Onlys’ recording tower was a consistent group of pop soldiers writing, working and whiling away the hours. A beeramid of cheap cans, endless dope smokery and a pretty strong vibe of dudes who would play together into oblivion. 388 rolling, tape spilling over itself, drum kit covered in mufflers, a chest of shitty percussion toys, lots of ideas and multiple secret weapons at their disposal. “Shayde Sartin: the beast from out east, the thud of a heavy slow bomb…the best bass player in the Bay. Unaccredited infinite times on records that were made better by his finely crafted skills. I can pick him out on records instantly. “Wymond ‘The Count’: you can almost smell his hair on his hooks. If there was a stage monitor in your living room his fence-climber boot would be on it. Wymond always has the riff that made the jets of the song take off. Listen and you’ll see what I mean. “Tim Cohen: the man behind the beard. Some would say the leader. In the game as long as Bette Midler. Cohen writes great...

LP VERSION INCLUDES FREE DOWNLOAD COUPON!!! In The Red is proud to announce the release of the new full-length from San Francisco's Fresh and Onlys, Play It Strange. After two albums (on Castle Face and Woodsist, respectively) and too many singles and EPs to count, The Fresh and Onlys deliver their most solid outing yet. Recorded by studio whiz Tim Green during an eight-day session, Play It Strange marks the band's first recording in an actual recording studio. On two-inch analog tape! The results are nothing short of incredible. For those unfamiliar with The Fresh and Onlys, their sound draws from jangly psychedelia, Morricone-style Western twang, dark vibes a la Bad Seeds / Gun Club, melodic '60s sunshine pop and a hint of garage rock swagger. While this disparate list may look strange on paper, it makes perfect sense when you hear it. Play It Strange is the sound of a band that has ingested a wide range of rock 'n' roll influences from nearly every genre and sub-genre to come up with something fresh and immensely enjoyable. "... shambles barefoot through Summer of Love-style guitar and tambourine jams, strewing lyrical oddities and flower garlands along the path that leads, if not to where Syd Barrett lives, at least to Dan Treacy's neighborhood." --Dusted "[T]he Fresh and Onlys traffic in jangly garage-pop, balancing psych-rock swagger with generous dollops of sweetly cockeyed melody. Their recordings are lovingly caked with crud, and their jams sometimes veer perilously close to derailing completely,...

***Another total winner from the Agitated stable, and two blasts of wild pop from San Francisco's finest purveyors of said genre THE FRESH & ONLYS. “Impending Doom” is the band’s their first UK release, and ties in with UK shows, ATP etc. Both tracks highlight the bands abilities in creating pop music thats skewed yet perfect and both are also exclusive to this release. UK import.

***When TIM COHEN told SHAYDE SARTIN he was writing a song called "Be My Hooker," the FRESH & ONLYS’ bassist looked at the singer / guitarist and said, "'There's no way we're gonna have a song with that title, dude.'" But Sartin explains, "Sure enough, he laid a riff down and I was like, 'Jesus Christ, I can't believe you pulled something meaningful out of such a stupid line.'" Welcome to the push/pull dynamic that's fueled the Fresh & Onlys' steady stream of releases over the past year. With so much music hitting shops in such a short time, one might think the band has a problem with quality control. Quite the contrary; Sartin and Cohen are very careful about what they release. The final mix of Grey-Eyed Girls sounds like a natural bridge between the raucous garage rock of the group's debut and the full-on studio record they plan on wrapping for In The Red later this year. Received a 7.5 rating from Pitchfork.
