***JAS is JEROME RAISIN (guitar and effects), ANNA KOALA (Moog) and STEVE PAINTER (guitar and effects). Jerome and Anna are from Paris and play in MAGNETIC MEMORY. Steve is from Boston and plays and records with 12 CENT DONKEY and DARK SUNNY LAND. This recording was done over a few summer nights in Jerome's living room in Paris. The band had never played as a trio before and there was no rehearsal. The first thing they played was "Hypno Time" and it's on the record. The band’s intention was just to get together, play, and record the experience as friends for their own memories. “We wanted to approach our instruments in a fresh way, so that our playing would surprise both ourselves and each other: detuned guitars, Moog as percussion, unusual effects combinations, etc. Also, we did not want to allow comfortable grooves to develop, and agreed to toss in sonic monkey wrenches to disturb the apple cart as needed. Somehow we were able to get big sounds out of small cheap amps and not disturb neighbors that had been known to complain. We recorded only with a mini-disc player and one microphone. Thus there was no opportunity to do any mixing of levels but we were lucky to get a great mastering job, so sonically it's happening. We were surprised and happy when we listened to the recordings, all spontaneously improvised sound conversations. Bands whose music was in our heads at the time were Sun Ra, Sonic Youth, No...
