***After closing out his landmark Cinderella Sound trilogy, Mickey Newbury headed down the road to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and into Chip Young's Young 'Un Sound. The result was 1974's I Came To Hear The Music, a warmer, looser record than the albums before it, but no less adventurous. The sound effects and sweeping suites give way to something more direct. The songs stand on their own, with Newbury's tender, unguarded voice right at the center. This is the sound of an artist at ease in his own skin: reflective, full of quiet grace, and a reminder that Newbury could break your heart without raising his voice. Long out of print and passed between collectors for decades, I Came To Hear The Music has been transferred from the original master tapes and remastered by Clay Jones (Al Green, Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse). ***Recorded at Chip Young's Young 'Un Sound in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 1975's Lovers was Mickey Newbury's final album for Elektra and perhaps his most versatile. It moves easily between country, blues, gospel and the lazy, rolling feel of New Orleans, sometimes within a single side, all held together by one of the great voices and pens in American music. Radio didn't know what to do with an artist who refused to stay in one lane. Heard today, Lovers sounds like exactly what it was: the work of a writer following his muse wherever it led, regardless of what Nashville expected. Long out of print, it has been transferred from the original master tapes and remastered by Clay Jones (Al Green, Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse). Produced by Chip Young.

***MICKEY NEWBURY was a songwriter’s songwriter at the dawning of the era of the singer-songwriter, yet he was also an unknown name on the Billboard charts. Mickey Newbury found early writing success in Nashville, enabling him to pave the way for his friends and contemporaries like Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and David Allen Coe. Even to this day, Newbury continues to influence the most championed songwriters. His songs have been recorded nearly 1400 times by more than 1000 performers including Johnny Cash, Scott Walker, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, the Box Tops, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Nick Cave. He is the only songwriter ever to have number one hits (with different songs) in the pop, country, R&B and easy listening charts within the space of one year (and three of those songs were in the charts simultaneously!). In “Sunshine” the vermillion hues of ’Frisco Mabel Joy give way to shadows and light. Additionally, two classics from the Newbury songbook were in the flow: the soaring ballad “Sweet Memories” and the bluesy shuffle “Why You Been Gone So Long.” The title track raised his lyrics to new levels of poetic expression.
