Did you ever used to scare yourself to sleep? Here’s betting that Raoul Sinier did. Fitting with the Edward Gorey-esque illustrations of childlike urban macabre that are Raoul’s signature in his line of visual art, the music of “The Melting Man” comes from a dark, exciting, and pervasively innocent place. The City of Lost Children dreams of spiriting away near a warm fire, while the rain from a black thunderstorm slams the harsh tin roof above them. “We Fly” enters dreamland through a sinister dusk that showcases Raoul’s surprisingly calm vocals. Having covered Thom Yorke’s “Cymbal Rush“ on his last solo release, Raoul unleashes a similarly personal and beautiful crescendo, as noisy guitars bully their way through the fragile sing-song refrain into “We Fly part 2”. Following a vocal coda, “All Night” is another nightmare, this time in an electro vein. Finally, the title track quivers out under further washes of distorted organ. Yes, this is The Human League spending the night in a haunted house. Raoul Sinier has previous released music on Ad Noiseam, Planet Mu, Coredump, Sublight, and Teams, with past collaborators including Venetian Snares, μ-Ziq, Hecq, and Vast Aire. “The Melting Man” marks his Tigerbeat6 debut. Rumor has it that the Tigerbeaters slept with the lights on and a Joker-gas grin for a week after receiving the masters.
