After a period of smoldering dormancy Vanum reappears, blazing and alive, with their third full length album, Legend. Continuing the triumphant march of previous works, but raising the stakes even higher, Legend finds Vanum both expanding and refining their approach, and in turn delivering their most fully realized recording to date. The core of the band’s sound remains unchanged: unyielding and grandiose black metal that traces a hellish through line from the power of mid-era Bathory, through the riff-craft of the Hellenic masters, to the bitter fury of the Slavic greats. But amidst the pantheon of familiar influences, new touchstones become ever more apparent. With Legend, the continuum is charted further back and to new lands. Within the throes of the black metal maelstrom, echoes of classic heavy metal are increasingly recognizable, further bolstering Vanum‘s towering melodic sensibility and epic songwriting. Coupled with a deeper and expanded exploration and use of ambience and synthesizers, the album is imbued with a richness and sense of majesty that underpins each of its five towering compositions. Due to the global chaos of 2020-21, initial recording plans had to be scrapped in favor of extremely detailed demo and pre-production work, followed by a remote tracking process. ***BACK IN STOCK ON LP!!!  Vanum was formed in 2014 as the collaborative project of K. Morgan (Ash Borer) and M. Rekevics (Yellow Eyes, Vorde, Vilkacis). Drawing from the old traditions of the genre, they play elemental and majestic black metal with an unyielding force and passion, showcasing a sharply focused and dynamic sense of composition marked as much by somber patience as arrogant strength. 2019 will see the release of Ageless Fire on Profound Lore Records. Expanding upon the triumphant framework hinted at with 2017’s Burning Arrow EP, as well as the majestic fury of 2015’s Realm of Sacrifice, Vanum’s newest effort sees the band continuing to chart a path of steady ascendency and constant growth. While the album’s overt Bathory-by-way-of-Hellas inspiration is of note, this is by no means a throwback album. The towering songs here emerged organically, and naturally reflect their heavy metal lineage as much as they also reveal the band’s own unique identity. This ability to interpolate influence and individual inspiration into a seamless and deeply resonant whole make this release more than simply an exercise in emulation and further cements Vanum’s place as a singular band, in reverence to the past while defiantly looking towards the future.  Additionally, Ageless Fire is the first to feature the band’s expanded lineup. Vanum is a new band formed by two of America’s most respected underground black metal musicians: K. Morgan of Ash Borer and M. Rekevics of Fell Voices / Vorde / Vilkacis. Over the years, the like-minded musicians developed a comradeship, sharing split releases and touring together. However, Vanum marks the first time both artists have collaborated musically.  With the goal of creating a certain expression of dark atmospheric music with each album, Vanum treads ground familiar to fans of Morgan’s and Rekevics’s respective repertoires. Realm of Sacrifice features some of the most stirring and mesmerizing black metal each musician has ever created and will be recognized as one of the most powerful releases of the year.
