In under half hour Canadian bestial death metal cataclysm Prophetic Suffering conceive the unthinkable and create a violent and dark monstrosity bringing together the feral black/death terror of Blasphemy with the gruesome and sanguinary gore-infested death metal of Cannibal Corpse albums like "The Bleeding" and "Tomb of the Mutilated". This obfuscating and chaos-wielding approach to USDM metal had already been observed before within the underground’s most forbidden folds, as exemplified for example through the perversions of cult terrorscapers like Drawn and Quartered or Angelcorpse, but what transpires from Prophetic Suffering’s abysmal vision is something of even less canonical lineaments, and which sets various precedents in the development of this peculiar strain of darkened and ultra-gruesome death metal. Foremost, a pervasive and weaponized use of black metal and technical death-derived dissonance that has metastasized into a torrential maelstrom of gnarled, atonal fretwork destruction. A mind-expanding contrast is created where the guitarwork stretches forward to embrace a mutating modernity still in becoming, while the rest of the band deliberately collapses backward, perpetrating a primeval onslaught of carpet-bombing hammer blasts, searing basslines, and soul-tearing death grunts. This contrast between the album’s transformative articulation and its visceral adherence to primitivism and barbarity is what makes “Rivalry of Thyself” such an abomination unto itself. A cataclysmic hellscape of enigmatic complexity and truculent violence in which impenetrable atmospheres enshroud a monolithic, screaming altar of mutilated bodies and trodden flesh, harkening back to a familiar golden age of extreme death metal just as it evokes sinister presages...

Tales From A Blistering Paradise by Heaven's Gate

Heaven's Gate

Tales From A Blistering Paradise
Beach Impediment

***When most people think of Florida, they might picture retirement villages with seniors playing pickleball, luxurious Lamborghinis cruising to the beach, or leather-skinned swamp folks with a passion for NASCAR. However, Florida is also home to some of the fiercest punk bands imaginable. HEAVEN'S GATE is one such band. Instead of exuding the raw grime of Assück, Heaven's Gate channels their rage into a powerful, concise, blast-beating behemoth. Tales From A Blistering Paradise builds upon the animosity this fearsome foursome shared with us via their debut self-titled EP a couple years back, revealing a grotesque embodiment that has only become more exacting and deadly since that initial release; which is no surprise considering the extensive catalog of these folks, past and present. This record is eight tracks of seething, white knuckle extreme music—nothing more, nothing less.Recorded by Ryan Boesch at Candor Studios, mixed by Will Killingsworth and mastered by Joel Grind, each record comes in a jacket laid out by Steak Mtn and featuring a cover photo taken by drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz nearly 30 years ago of Our Lady of Clearwater.

***Behold! Previously only released on the digital format in the year 2022 as they became available and then via a series of 7"s on the Paranoid Northern Discs and D-Takt & Råpunk Records labels just last year, Beach Impediment is delighted to present these eight tracks on the 12" format to the North American populus. Much like the rest of the offerings from 偏執症thus far, these songs are top notch and thankfully did not fade away into cyber obscurity. Limited to a one time pressing of 500 copies, each record comes in not only a jacket adorned with the stunning art of Joe BB but also features an immense fold out poster by the acclaimed punk artist, serving as quite the visual compliment to the devastating compositions on this slab.

***Hailing from Oakland, CA, Glowing Brain are back with their second album, Memory Distortion, recorded at El Studio in San Francisco, with Phil Becker (Mondo Drag, Big Business) once again at the helm. Mostly fast, always loud, and rarely sober, the trip serve up ten more tracks of self-described "long hair punk." This time around the trio have expounded on that idea channeling their cannabis-induced collective anxiety into a distinctive style of ripping motör-charged hardcore, unafraid to explore the deepest reaches of the inner cosmos. Call 'em punk, call 'em metal, just don't call 'em cold-necks. Pressed on coke bottle clear vinyl.

***Detroit area psych rockers led by Chris Durham. Heavy 60s freak-beat, Syd-era Floyd meets early 70s Alice Cooper prog-psych vibes."With a pre-Asylum Laurel Canyon vibe by way of those busted Wayne County roads, Play Atlantis deftly splits the difference between the Straight and the Bizarre. Though the committed students of a variety of moldy freaks from the bygone days, Christopher Alan Durham and his Peacetime Consumers have crafted new mutant strains of lysergic choogle to guide righteous outsiders through the dawn's early light."—Nate K. host of Burn It Down! on WFMU"C.hris A.lan D.urham emerges with the Peacetimers Straight Outta Del Ray, Michigan. C.A.D. & The Peacetimers enter a studio and come out with jams akin to early Pink Floyd singles and Easy Action-era Alice Cooper moves. Straight-up NZ jammers like 'Into the Void' or Soft Boys-styled 'Blue Toy'. Some of the best codas I’ve heard in recent years. It customarily comes with a certain amount of his trademark tape hiss, but being that Play Atlantis is an actual ROCK AND ROLL* record by a band with a thunderous yet dextrous rhythm section, the increased fidelity of this release is not only welcome, but utterly necessary. The record starts with the classic sound of a reverberating drum roll, and proceeds to warp idiosyncratically...

***"Living Dream arrived on the scene just when we needed them, diversifying the contemporary DIY underground with ripping, kaleidoscopic guitar pop. With Absolute Devotion comes a step up in production and an articulated vision for the band on display, leaning into a triumphant darkness teased in their understated 2023 self-titled tape. Living Dream share a timeless combination of intertwined guitar melodies, low end pulse, hypnotic tambourine and a dignified dual vocal style.Absolute Devotion sounds like a fully realized effort all their own, drawing from David Roback's paisley underground standouts but here emphasizing a celebration of treble and use of tape sound, reverb, field recordings and wordless vocals. What makes this release even cooler is that it is an unlikely but inherently midwestern endeavor, born out of what must be a tight-knit Indianapolis scene. A dive into Kayla Pappas and Stephen Orban's musical projects reveals a mysteriously prolific, genre-expansive and inspired world (Mudslut, Elk Manakin). These folks absolutely geek over music and it shows."—Allison Error (Dial Error)

***Mercenárias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post-punk. They gained global recognition after being included in several compilations outside Brazil. Recommended for fans of The Slits, DNA, Malaria!, Kleenex, and Minutemen, the group stood out for their rebellious attitude, incisive lyrics, and raw sound that blended punk, post-punk, no wave and experimental elements. This is a compilation of rare tracks from 1983 to 1987, including ten amazing songs that didn't make it onto their two albums; there's also a great early live recording, as well as a "lost" studio session. It has been remastered from the original tapes and includes an insert with previously unseen photos and a short text by Edgard Scandurra. This is a collaboration release with the Brazilian label Nada Nada Discos. Born in the vibrant alternative scene of 1980s São Paulo, Mercenárias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post- punk. Formed in 1982 by Sandra Coutinho (bass and vocals), Rosália Munhoz (vocals), Ana Machado (guitar), and Edgard Scandurra (drums), the group stood out for their rebellious attitude, incisive lyrics, and raw sound that blended punk, post-punk, no wave and experimental elements. Their debut album, Cadê as Armas? (1986), is considered one of the most important records in Brazilian music history.

Durham, North Carolina’s Personality Cult return with their third album (second for Dirtnap) and it’s a monster! Personality Cult started as a solo project by Ben Carr, making their debut in 2018 with a self-titled LP on the legendary Drunken Sailor Records. Gradually morphing from a solo act to the full band they are today, they were in the middle of recording their second album, when they were brought to the attention of Dirtnap through a tip-off from mutual friend Jeff Burke. Recognizing songwriting genius when they hear it, Dirtnap wasted no time in snapping the band up, and the resultant LP, New Arrows, was released to much acclaim in February 2020 (Right in time for you-know-what….)Fast forward three years. Recorded in NYC at The Daisy Chain studios, Dilated was painstakingly produced by Ian Rose and Jeff Burke (Marked Men, Radioactivity). Burke engineered and mixed Personality Cult’s last record, but on this one he really stepped to the forefront and took over as producer, overseeing every detail of the project from its very beginning stages all the way to the end.Of the recording process, Ben Carr says: “I really fell in love with working in the studio on this record. The freedom of time in a space where we had unlimited flexibility to work has changed the way I do things and what’s important to me while recording”Cementing their status as a “full” band, Personality Cult has recently enlisted the considerable talents of Colin Swanson-White (Formaldehyde Junkies, Voight Kampff, and...

Pythagoras by Pyramids

Pyramids

Pythagoras
Flenser

Pythagoras, the new Pyramids album nine years in the making, is set for release in 2025 via avant-tastemakers The Flenser. Yet another daring study in genre synthesis, the band continues to push boundaries in both sound and aesthetic, blending jagged fragments of black metal and shoegaze as they have done since their influential 2008 Hydra Head Records debut, only this time adding the unconventional layers of reggaeton and neoperreo to both voice and rhythm. Named after the ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras represents the band’s ongoing commitment to innovation, and the perpetual juxtaposition of the delicate and the devastating, embracing complex musical structures and rhythms that both challenge and captivate the listener. At the heart of the album lies an intricate balance between aggressive blast beats and the syncopated pulse of reggaeton’s signature dembow rhythm—a concept born from founder Rich Loren Balling’s own immersion in both extreme music and pop genres. To bring the album’s vision to life, Pyramids enlisted vocalist Emy Smith, whose neoperreo-influenced vocals add a haunting, ethereal layer to the dense soundscape. The album’s cover art, created by Miami-based nail artist Kro Vargas (aka Krocaine), further captures the ominous yet captivating essence of the music, hinting at the fusion of genres and cultures that defines Pythagoras. Pythagoras is not just a sonic evolution—it is an exploration of the cycles of musical extremes. Balling believes that genres, like metal, evolve towards greater intensity until they reach a point of such sonic density and noise that they return to something...

Riding Easy

Here you are in 2025 about to take the Twentieth Trip! A vibe that resonates timelessly, real life ripped out of the haze by real people, fresh and unfiltered right out of the gate. Getting it while they can. These are no mere historic sound recordings, they are life itself! If you’re looking for trouble, you just found it!

Lake Fire by Loscil

Loscil

Lake Fire
Kranky

“Less than a month after one of the most violent fire events in the history of the continent, new shoots had burst through the scorched hardpan, nourished by the still-vital roots of those flayed and blackened trees.” John Vaillant, Fire WeatherLoscil (aka Scott Morgan) returns to Kranky with Lake Fire, a nine-track offering of ash-laden sonics that mine the tension within the cycle of destruction and rejuvenation. Lake Fire is the result of a disjointed creative process. Originally conceived as a suite for electronics and ensemble, most of the original compositions were deserted, save for “Ash Clouds,” featuring James Meager on double bass. The remaining tracks were reshaped and remixed, built anew out of the remnants of the abandoned work. The result is a phoenix, an album burnt to the ground only to be reassembled out of its cinders. Fragments of the original lurk beneath a densely overpainted canvas of sound.Infused into the resulting rearrangements are impressions from a road trip into the mountains marking a personal half-century milestone, surrounded by the ominous proximity of wildfires and dense smoke; celebrating life while the world burns. The album’s title comes from the striking irony that forest fires are often named after regional lakes—perhaps subconsciously referencing ancient lore. The cover photos were taken from this same trip, while sitting in a rowboat staring into the grey abyss of an opposing mountainside outside of Revelstoke, BC, obfuscated by smoke from a nearby lake fire.

***ON LIMITED BONE VINYL!!! Bleed’s introductory EP Somebody’s Closer was initially self-released by the band through digital platforms in 2021. Despite no physical release at the time, the EP, invoking late ’90s / early ’00s-era alt rock / metal gained the Dallas, Texas-based band a lotta buzz with its gauzy distortion balancing tension and atmosphere, and via several mutual connections came to the attention of 20 Buck Spin. The label issued vinyl and cassette editions in 2022 bringing Bleed’s music to new audiences and wider attention. Since that time the anticipation for the band’s debut full length has built to fever pitch, and at long last it arrives as Spring heads into Summer.Bleed’s self-titled LP maintains the melodic heaviness and tight song structures of the EP, while diving headfirst into the oceanic haze, pushing their sound into territory more immersive, relentless and hypnotically lush. Guitars surge and sway in stacked waves of gravitational angst, overdriven rhythms eccentrically pulsing beneath, and guitarist / singer Ryan Hughes’s voice floating in and out, sometimes distant and detached, sometimes cracked open with desperation. Lyrics move in fragments, alluding to themes of deep interntal struggle, coping mechanisms and hurting those you love most. It’s music that doesn’t so much demand attention as seeps straight into the bloodstream, the kind of album that endlessly loops in the back of the mind at 3 A.M.Bold strides are taken right outta the gate to make the authenticity of Bleed’s universe more expansive in its inspirations and ambitions. For the better part of five decades, Ron House has been dispatching his singular take on the musical landscape of Americana via bands such as Moses Carryout, Great Plains, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apts & Counter Intuits. Yet in 2002 he self released a solo CD, Obsessed, which is the most ambitious effort in his canon. And arguably his most ignored.Obsessed follows the front-to-back tale of an unnamed protagonist as he traverses the landscape of a disintegrating relationship. The honeymoon has long since past & life appears to be in freefall, but it's never over till it's over. It is an opus of maddening despair, wrapped around a Edward Albee-esque drama, played out enigmatically in The People's Court of song. Delivering key musical assists along the way are members of Movieola, TJSA, Jerry DeCicca & Noel Sayre. In the rarefied modus operandi of The Harrisburg Players, the tenor on Obsessed thread a needle through the sanguinity of Townes Van Zandt, Phil Ochs self immolation & the cracker barrel charm of Michael Hurley. And if that's good enough for God, surely it's good enough for you. Now finally made available on vinyl by the folks at Zaius Tapes, file alongside, Tommy Jay's Tall Tales Of Trauma, Mike Rep's Darby Creek Drifter, Don Howland's The Land Between The Mountains & Jim Shepard's, Picking Through The Wreckage With a Stick. Become Nothing / We Live As Ghosts
Redscroll

***One man New Haven noisegrind band CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP (aka: Chopx7 or Chop7times) has been honing his craft for five years, tearing a path up and down the East coast in the process. His newest offering, Become Nothing is his most focused work yet. A unique blend of noisecore and powerviolence all created with digitally programmed drums and bass makes for a punishing experience. Gone are the interludes and samples that occupied the space between songs on previous releases, leaving room for a heavier emphasis on the slow and sludgy side of his sound. Make no mistake though, he still gets up to absolutely blistering speeds as well. All of this with a lyrical focus on the erosion of one’s identity due to outside forces. Since the album comes in at just around 17 minutes, it is pressed in full on one side of the record with his previous album, We Live as Ghosts (previously only available on an out-of-print cassette) occupying the B side; his most popular release to date, this is the first time that it will be available on wax. For fans of Man Is the Bastard / Bastard Noise, Insect Warfare, The Gerogerigegege, Suppression. Edition of 150 copies on dark amber swirl vinyl.

Bathing In The Stone
Sophomore Lounge

***"Bathing In The Stone is the 6th album from Mazozma (aka Ma Turner) and the first for Sophomore Lounge since 2016’s Mazozma’s Fatufairfe. In those ensuing 9 years (if not prior), Turner’s considerable skill-set as a guitarist has been employed in a variety of guises and the amount of range covered by projects including but not limited to Huevos II, Warmer Milks, State Champion and Teal Grapefruit begs the question who else in the underground rock sphere can measure up? The small field is about to get even slimmer with the release of Bathing In The Stone, a shimmering, incandescent riposte to a generation’s worth of troubled (and often tentative) troubadours. Immaculately recorded, deftly played, Bathing is the most fully realized and thoroughly gorgeous work in Turner’s sprawling discography. If, like me, you’re concerned your friends are drowning in a sea of musical mediocrity, the album will well function as a life preserver (NOT LITERALLY, besides you can’t play it after it’s soaked). Is that not the greatest gift you can give? I mean, I once received one of those Sports Illustrated football phones so I think I’m pretty qualified to weigh in on the opposite of the greatest gift. All of that said, many of us feel as though we’re living in a world that’s being pulled apart at the seams (or in the case of the football phone, the stitching). For about 40 minutes, Bathing In The Stone is nothing short of a tonic for these horrible times. If...

***Kentucky singer, songwriter and poet, Grace Rogers, comes from a family of old time, traditional and string band musicians. Her great grandpa Charlie Rogers played guitar in the Kentucky String Ticklers, recorded on the Gennett Record Label in Richmond Indiana during the Great Depression. Grace, herself, has been playing solo shows and traditional music for around ten years. But on Mad Dogs her debut studio album, defying Pete Seeger and his vengeful axe, Rogers has ventured beyond the music she cut her teeth on. Armed with a mid-metal Ibanez S Classic electric guitar that her musician father bought for her on Facebook Marketplace and plugged straight into an amp with no pedals (cause she doesn’t have any), Rogers throws down with the help of a group of skillful, kind-hearted musician friends: Ian Gordon (Grandma’s Boys, Couch Cadet, Family Curse) on electric guitar, Chris Cupp (Ellie Ruth, Restless Leg String Band) on bass and cello, and Fiona Palensky (Eric Slick, Lindsay Lou, Turbonut) on drums and vocal harmonies.Drawing nourishment from the deep roots of her home place in Bath County and watered by the freak waters of Louisville, Rogers has crafted eight original tracks that hum like hymns and drive like rain. Her lyrics are restless, anxious, haunting and hopeful. Steely and resolute. Observing with a poet’s eye, Rogers knows that in the time it takes to tune a banjo, lies a space to tell a story, a story about the places and the people who shaped your being. With a...

***Limited edition 20th anniversary first-time-vinyl pressing of Ultra Pulverize's debut Gorillas In The Fist full-length. Edition of 200 on black vinyl."“It’s just three guys; they have a bodybuilder guy rapping over a drum machine and a synthesizer.” A friend at the time had done his best to describe the opening bands for the evening, one of them named Ultra Pulverize. This unusual description would only be the FIRST time that Chris Vititoe, Andrew Vititoe, and Jared Busch would defy my expectations...I absolutely could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. Andrew’s vocal style and sound struck me more within the traditional punk sphere of John Lydon or the likes as far as how it was meant to cut through with a sinister, snotty, biting humor. He was “rapping” but it sort of upset my musical equilibrium in how original it and he was; he had effectively bypassed the “culture vulture” charge in being a white guy within the vicinity of rap in how he had shaped his performance. Nobody but nobody could have or would have ever expected the drum machine to be played manually and fed through a series of outboard effects. All the while, a synthesizer was carrying so much sonic, melodic, colorful, and occasionally abrasive heft that would ordinarily be accomplished by multiple instruments..."—William Benton, 2025

Crimson Moon Evocations
Dark Descent

***LIMITED BLACK AND VERY LIMITED TRANSPARENT RED VINYL!!! Sepulchral Curses’ third full-length Crimson Moon Evocations paints a vivid portrait of a band at their creative and productive peak. On their Dark Descent Records debut, the Turku quintet demonstrate unmatched ferocity and craftsmanship, cementing their place at the very zenith of the global blackened death metal scene. As with many Finnish death metal pioneers, the band incorporates a distinctive sense of weirdness, blending diverse influences in crafting a sound that’s unmistakably their own. “The backbone is death metal,” states vocalist Kari Kankaanpää, “but we’ve never shied away from exploring new inspirations and influences, which shape the unique edge synonymous with Sepulchral Curse. Music needs to be dark, heavy and furious!” Crimson Moon Evocations marks the band’s debut with Dark Descent Records, a partnership that feels both natural and profoundly significant: “Dark Descent Records has always held a special place in my heart. To join their renowned roster with this record is a true honour.” This new collaboration reflects the Sepulchral Curse's unwavering momentum, arriving merely two years after their bold leap forward with Abhorrent Dimensions “With Abhorrent Dimensions we truly began to find our own sound and style, and Crimson Moon Evocations takes an even deeper dive into who we are and crystallizes the essence of the Sepulchral Curse sound.” To capture their vision, the band returned to Finland’s Oxroad Studios to work with producer Tomi Uusitupa, whose influence has been pivotal. “Tomi is like our sixth member. Smote Reverser (Reissue) by Oh Sees

Oh Sees

Smote Reverser (Reissue)
DEATHGOD CORP

Crack the coffers, Oh Sees have spawned another frothy album of head-destroying psych-epics to grok and rock out to. Notice the fresh dollop of organ and keyboard prowess courtesy of Memory Of A Cut Off Head-alum and noted key-stabber Tom Dolas, while the Paul Quattrone / Dan Rincon drum-corps polyrhythmic pulse continues to astound and pound in equal measure, buttressed by the nimble fingered bottom end of Sir Tim Hellman the Brave and the shred-heaven fret frying of John Dwyer, whilst Lady Brigid Dawson again graces the wax with her harmonic gifts. Aside from the familiar psych-scorch familiar to soggy pit denizens the world over, there’s a fresh heavy-prog vibe that fits like a worn-in jean jacket comfortably among hairpin metal turns and the familiar but no less horns-worthy guitar fireworks Dwyer’s made his calling card. Perhaps the most notable thing about Smote Reverser is the artistic restlessness underpinning its flights of fancy. Dwyer refuses to repeat himself and for someone with such a hectic release schedule, that stretching of aesthetic borders and omnivorous appetite seems all the more superhuman!

A condensed and intimate collection of five cover songs and five original compositions that embody Sam’s endless depth of wit, absurdity, humility, passion, and heartache. Dedicated to all of the people who were graced to have shared their lives and fellowship with this beloved, one of a kind human being.Compiled by Zeke Howard and mastered by Tim Green at Louder Studios. 180g black vinyl, 500 pressed with Stoughton 28 pt tip-on sleeve.

***Jeremy Bradley Earl is a NY-based visual artist and musician in the psychedelic folk rock band Woods. This four song EP marks his first recorded music under his own name and coincides with his first solo tour outside of Woods. As a longtime champion and maker of psychedelic American music, Jeremy Earl knows how to play it wrong in order to get it so right. He’s spent twenty years on a space echo trail with his band Woods, and while he’s refined his craft, there’s still a gentle chaos inside. These four solo songs blend folk and rock like his band, but left alone his writing cuts a little deeper, the hallucinations homespun, the illuminations ghostly. Includes a cover of "Deep Water" by Ed Askew. Jeremy Bradley Earl (vocals, guitars, Casio, percussion, drums), Sam Cohen (guitar, bass, drums, mellotron), Kyle Forester (piano). Limited edition color risograph 7-inch pressed on black vinyl.

***NOW AVAILABLE!!! "For their third album, The Control Freaks have surprised us with several ballads, a beautiful piano piece that will move you to tears, and a seven-minute operatic number about the pointlessness of human existence. Just kidding! The Control Freaks will always sound like The Control Freaks, and who would want it any other way? Get Some Help is hands-down the album of the year. It's also one of the best records that Greg Lowery has ever played on -- which is really saying something!Get Some Help is 13 tracks of catchy three-chord punk rock full of humor and raw energy. The songs rarely go too far beyond the two-minute mark and lend themselves to a variety of responses such as singing along, dancing in your underwear, and flipping off your neighbors. We'd probably be grateful if Greg were still making records half as good as he did 20-25 years ago, but honestly he's still in peak form with this band. If you were out and about and heard the title track, you might think it was an old Rip Offs song that you somehow missed..."—Faster And Louder

***With their unpredictable live performances and songs such as "Zurück zum Beton" and "Industriemädchen," S.Y.P.H. caused a ruckus at the end of the '70s—as one of the bands that began to write lyrics in German around Düsseldorf's Ratinger Hof. Right from the start, the band broke with genre-conformist expectations and borrowed from rock, punk and kraut just as much as from Dadaism and the reality of everyday life. After the first album and several singles, the band produced two more albums—Pst and S.Y.P.H. (Album 4)—together with CAN's Holger Czukay.

Misty Lane paves a path to Dark Entries to deliver some quirky Quebecois disco pop. In 1983, producers Michel Bibeau, perhaps best known for his work on Pluton & Humanoids’ “World Invasion,” and Fitz Roy aka Ralph Mashats teamed up with singer Elaine Desjardins, the eponymous Misty Lane. Mashats reminisces about bringing his Roland TR-808 and TB-303 to Michel’s Studio 21 in St. Eustache, two units he regretted later selling for “a slice of bread.” Michel added hooks with his Roland Jupiter 4 and various studio effects. Their sessions produced “Energy” and “Contrôle,” two cuts of slinky synthpop with French-Canadian flair. “Energy” pops off with proto-house vibes thanks to snappy 808s and Desjardin’s naive-but-enthusiastic vocals, and would fit right into a mid-80s WBMX Radio mix. “Contrôle” is a mid-tempo groover with tropical atmospheres, sitting perfectly next to to Junior Byron’s “Dance to the Music,” which was another Bibeau production. Energy comes in a sleeve featuring Elaine at The Chivas Club in Montreal. Fans of Italo, Canadian disco, and oddball wave will rejoice in these artfully produced gems.

Creatures Of The Night by The Vacant Lot

The Vacant Lot

Creatures Of The Night
Iron Lung

The Vacant Lot are a first wave punk band from Canberra, started in 1978, that released just one EP in 1981. They played a few gigs and broke up shortly after but not without having a full set list of free-thinking, anti-establishment, Wire/Magazine/Buzzcocks inspired tunes to call from. And call they have! 'Creatures of the Night' is a collection of songs mostly written in '78/'79 but never recorded. Now with a fresh line-up (including Alien Nosejob's Jake Robertson!) they finally see the light. We asked singer George Howson about where the impetus comes from and he shot back with: "Writing songs is something I have to do. I wanted bring life some of our earliest songs which were never recorded, and to pair them with lyrics that did justice to their energy and power. A lot of my working life outside the band takes place in that edge territory where bush intersects with farmland, which provides much of the setting for the lyrics, inspiring the images and sensibility. My interest is in exploring internal and outer landscapes, and to try to make sense of the complex interplay between the two. This EP is also a tribute to Bruce Hart (now deceased), with whom I co-wrote most of our early music; finishing off unfinished business, layering new sensibilities on old, and honouring that original creative partnership."The Vacant Lot combine high energy garage music with potent lyrics, telling impressionistic stories as truthfully as they can through the juxtaposition of stark images transcribed directly...

***Years past the space time of Automaginary, Bitchin Bajas and Natural Infor- mation Society have reported back at last from beyond. If the new title doesn’t clue you, Totality brings good news. Since their first collaboration, the path- ways that lead from Natural Information Society’s ecstatic all-world jazz to Bitchin Bajas’ microtonal soundscapes have grown ever finer in their articulation. Across the spectrum, the septet balance a deeply searching mood with wonderfully in-pocket production feel. This makes for collective aural transport of the highest order to all those listening in. Four beautiful, spaced-out tracks that bubble up where rhythm meets ambience.

***The Age of Nümonia is the first LP by Montreal new-wave duo Nümonia, featuring artist Ani Kalemkerian on vocals and synths and multi-instrumentalist Jon Asencio (Doughboys, Pest 5000). The Age of Nümonia is a concept album that combines a passion for vintage sci-fi pulp novels, experimental film, and 80’s new wave aesthetic. The album was mixed by the legendary Montreal producer Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth). For fans of Anne Clark, Visage, Gary Numan and John Carpenter’s Horror film soundtracks. The two travellers sit motionless in the empty compartment as the silver neurotrain glides silently through electronic space. ***Samiarus (or Samyaza as more widely known in aramaic) is the arabic name of the leader of the Watchers in apocryphal abrahamic scriptures, a rebel angel who shared knowledge with men and birthed the Nephilim, becoming a danger to divine power and law, or, the absolute usurper. Conceived from within the SF Bay Area punk and metal underground (by current and past members of Abnutivum, Meth Sores, Flesh Dungeon, Doomsday, Slaughteruin, Abstracter and Mentor), emerging black/death metal terrorists Samiarus embody their namesake concept of abysmal occult usurpation to the boldest through their debut EP “Reign Destroyer”, twenty three minutes of blown out bestial sonic upheaval fuming from the iron jaws of terror. While deliberately embracing the cruelty and darkness of the so called “war metal” movement developed by bands like Blasphemy and Archgoat, Samiarus’ own formulaic design for the gruesome deposition of all oppressors has brought in a number of other influences to further weaponize their subversive terroristic vision. These influences mainly come from punk and hardcore bands like G.I.S.M., Doom, Raw Nerve, Cult Ritual, Discharge and Siege, as well as from some of the band members’ interest in certain strains of industrial noise, a concoction of retaliative audial tactics that has ultimately shaped an anarchic war-torn sonic scourge with a vitriolic and blown out sound, seething with dismal reflections on the human condition and on society’s worst embodiments.

***Hell 2 is not the first album from Austin’s Blank Hellscape, but it’s certainly the most fully-realized. OK, at least it’s the LONGEST. The three-piece nightmare band knocked around the claustrophobic end of the house show circuit for a longish spell but right around pre-‘dermic times, the trio of Ethan Billips, Max Deems and Andrew Nogay morphed into a multi-dimensional synapse-snapper with little regard for genre nor their own self-preservation. On that front, Hell 2 was echelons in the making; it would not be an exaggeration to say the writing / recording / editing process was arduous and lengthy enough it nearly took Blank Hellscape out of the game for good. But before you declare, “better luck next time”, strap yourself in to your favorite listening chair / apparatus and bask in this sprawling double album, to these ears, an uncanny musical & lyrical representation of the confusing, scary and thoroughly oppressive state we currently find ourselves in (not specifically Texas, but yes, Texas, too). I could not be more proud to dub this their long-awaited MAGNUM OPUS, and not simply because doing so will totally fuck shit up for whoever puts out their next album.

***BACK IN PRINT WITH NEW COLOR JACKET ART!!! Liquid Mike is an indie power pop rock band from Marquette, MI, in the Upper Peninsula. Liquid Mike began in 2021 after Mike Maple’s locally beloved college band, We Should Be Laughing, called it quits once several members graduated from Michigan Tech and subsequently relocated. Liquid Mike highlights Mike Maple’s (vocals, guitar) pop-rock song writing. The band features a fluid cast of U.P. standouts including Monica Nelson (WSBL) (synth), Dave Daignault (Charmer)(guitar), Zack Alworden (Charmer) (bass), Cody Marecek (drums). From 2021-2022, Liquid Mike released their 2 full lengths locally on CD, as well as an EP and 2 singles digitally. Mike employs a 4-track TASCAM, recording/producing/mixing all the band’s output. In 2023, he released “Self-Titled” on cassette, which quickly went viral online in Midwest Emo/indie rock circles, and later on vinyl via Upper Peninsula label, Kitschy Spirit, which was well received by critics.Liquid Mike inhabits a sweet spot in the musical pantheon: catchy, well-crafted guitar and vocal hooks that will snag any fan of power-pop/pop rock. Heartfelt melodies that will melt the hearts of any Midwest emo fan without being ham-fisted or overtly schmaltzy. Liquid Mike invokes a relatable feeling of nostalgia with everyday lyrics of the quickly-receding flavor of Big League Chew bubblegum, drinking beer from used marinara sauce jars in college, and every 4th hand rust-bucket of a car you ever drove in a Great Lakes snowstorm.

***Aside from spending the last couple summers teaching music on a remote New England island, David Alexander Shapiro has spent the rest of his time playing with various New Haven heads such as Headroom and Center, as well as accompanying the legendary Kath Bloom at local and various regional tours. To showcase his unique style on a variety of stringed instruments, David presents here, a side of banjo tracks, and a side of mandolin tracks. Continuing on his long tradition of untitled, or barely titled, releases and songs, this release only includes the information banjo side and mandolin side. You can figure out the rest. For the banjo side, one can hear vague echos of Billy Faier's Banjo record on Takoma and the Labyrinths LP by George Stavis from 1969 minus the occult trappings. Avoiding the usual bluegrass hammering of the instrument, opting for almost-classical style melodies, with sweet nostalgia. For the mandolin side, these somewhat looping, dream-like tracks can be compared to the sweeter mandolin passages by Ray Jackson on the early 70's records by Newcastle based band Lindisfarne. Beautiful, descending arpeggios, visualize floating dust in the rays of sunlight, projected late in the day.
