***74 minutes of ass-kicking, ultra-intense free jazz with an all-star group of seminal East Coast and European heavies! Fans of Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Peter Brotzmann, Masayuki Takayanagi and Milford Graves will cry tears of joy as they are smashed upside the head by this killer release! This is total energy music: a restless, relentless searching for new heights of sound and fury. Firestorm is a document of total speed and violence that never loses sight of articulation and interplay. The music here is about power, excitement and frenzy created by the dripping sweat and blood of its members’ manic performances. This music is 100 % abstract improvisation—no rock or or other idiomatic clichés here, just dense, furious modernism! Recorded in February 2007 in Philadelphia and New York City, Firestorm features performances by three special ensembles put together specially for the trip: 20 minutes of material (“Firestorm”, “Continual Rage” and “Refraction”) feature the legendary 83 year-old SUN RA ARKESTRA leader MARSHALL ALLEN screaming past infinity on his alto saxophone, bolstered by the rhythm section of WEASEL WALTER and bassist DAMON SMITH, and CECIL TAYLOR alumni ELLIOTT LEVIN on tenor saxophone. Another 20-odd minutes (“Ignition” and “The Shock Troop”) features music by a monolithic double trio formation featuring Walter, Smith, Levin and a trio of more Cecil Taylor cohorts—MARCO ENEIDI alto saxophone, LISLE ELLIS on bass and electronics and master drummer MARC EDWARDS (also formerly of the DAVID S. WARE QUARTET). The remaining 30 minutes of the disc is performed by a quartet with Walter, Smith, Eneidi and mythic Austrian saxophonist MARIO RECHTERN, a member of the REFORM ART UNIT and a leather lunged blower on par with Peter Brotzmann at his heights.
