ASH & HERB is a unit to challenge the very boundaries of duo exchanges within free dankazoid jam fiction. except this is fact, you can blast off. written by one of the medium's most innovative and prophetic voices (matt lajWAH from the mighty herbcraft), he is now found thrice as potent with astral goddess ASH "sister anubis" joining him in sonic rapture, tone and float perfectly realized on a joyous alternative earth. the dual vocal attack reminds me of a look i love & recognize, while the reality of time & death are totally displaced into some kinda homegrown dimension i haven't seen in what seems like an aeon but now is finally here.   and indeed it's all HERE, transportation, extrapolation, whack, zonk machine, action, art, plot, jam, focus…a truly superior work of free folk.   blast off this is C.O.M. 51!  - mvvermontwinter 2017Ash: vocals, Magnus Custom De Luxe (1, 3), Casio MT-210 (2), Rheem Mark VII (4, 6 [organ solo #2], 7, 8), six-string acoustic guitar (4, 8), electric guitar (5, 6 [guitar solo #1])  Herb: vocals, electric bass, 10-string guitar (1, 3, 4, 5, 6), six-string acoustic guitar (2), bongos (2, 6, 8), tambourine (2, 3, 4, 6, 8), shekere (2, 3, 5, 6), dilruba (3), tom (4), mijwiz (5), lid (5), buffalo drum (5), jar (6), electric guitar (6 [guitar solo #2], 8), Rheem Mark VII (6 [organ solo #1]), drumkit (6, 7, 8), waves (7)  Produced and mixed Fall 2016 at Matra...

I reckon i first started recording this number back when mick flower was sequestered by the volcano. by that i mean his visit to the USA touring with MV & EE as part of the GOLDEN ROAD was extended when his flight home was delayed due to "nature". so we hung around in vermont for several days jamming some more/canoeing/barbequeing…i had a bunch of new songs lined up that were ready to seed so i showed 'em to mick at my home studio maximum arousal farm and we partied on for awhile with "before it's gone". the structure/vibe was there and we slung some hash, basically just letting the fingers do the walking while he sunned himself with the BIG riff. felt groovy…dude is a GREAT artist and i got to sketch with him. so over the next few summers i developed it. my good friend arbitrary signs spectre folk magik marker pete nolan had just moved up to the pioneer valley and i thought it would be cool to get together by having him guest on the tune with some background vocals. i went down and hung out in his fly by night home studio and we got it on. welcome to the hood! he's got such sweet mojo and no one ever really talks about his vocal zone, which i always felt was right there and perfect velvet side of gone. my kinda tone. speaking of killer harmony tone float, jeremy earl from woods was visiting on one...

"i was feeling rockets all the time when we were creating and listening to this record. sometimes they were bottle rockets, imaginary rockets, estes, space crafts and gimongous star machines that haven’t been built yet. more importantly i was feeling stages, secondary...tertiary…beyond growth. definitely alotta triangulation with the “eye” and geometric eye in the sky -> always liftoff/ground, fruit/roots. ∞ philosophies. those kinda sounds often bless our head to remind us heads, they peak and peek out of the spectra as explosions. hopefully that translates for you, it will if you are that kind. maybe dig it in headphones if at first you don't succeed. in many ways this LP represents the cosmic fire of orgasm. we waited for a long time…" - matt valentine, maximum arousal farm (vermont 2014)  "Some people have a hard time picking sides, not me, not here: I'll take the flip. It starts high on the crazy horse, all gallop and fuzz, and begins to fray in the most glorious way. When the tambourine starts to shake, the jam goes to shambles — they coulda let it in, coulda make some rock heroism out of it, but they let it soak, standing outside, staring through the window as the storm rages on. It's one of those moments that makes it real clear why MV&EE end up on bills with boundary pushers as often as mellow jammers. Of course, matt and erika being who they are and doing what they do, bring it back home,...

Studio C.O.M.'s from MV & EE have been rare these days with recent rockets being in the form of the most righteous and mighty live excursions into unknown jam galaxies thru song form (dig the heroines, box sets and residencies!). However, time was when the Child Of Microtones sound worlds were exploding with the most unique and highly personalized solar systems of pre-war/post Takoma environs colliding like COMets with black ark pods from the tapers section. On "Shade Grown" sweet new MV & EE are back in that orbit fusing all that they can give and more to keep America beautiful. Go DIY army, this is greenspace…throw away yr armaments and trade the electric mower for headphones. This is perhaps the closest Spectra, Matt & Erika have come to dub, The ONE could get lost in these tunes/jams for many spins. Zebulon Residency by Mv & Ee

Mv & Ee

Zebulon Residency
Child Of Microtones

Fantastic sounding/looking collection of the very hard to find 7 disc set from their residency at the very groovy "zebulon" in january 2012. This is the BOMB of the tapers pit to date, we can call it a "section" now because we have moved into the realm of COMpartmentalization regarding the "MV & EE" live sound. This document rises above the sonic meniscus of the prior efforts (april flower/suub duub) as we have brought the multitrack into the form and we thank YOU for that! Why not run hi-fi tape recorders, insist on soundboards with room mics as well as collecting audience recordings from some of the bands greatest "tapers"? Who else would do that for you but C.O.M. -> and the others weren't quite "lo-fi" and raw, and we LIKE that! We dig B-movies, B-music, global primitive…but we went beyond here. YOU are treated to intimate, extremely detailed and often synapse bending renditions of some concert classics and more than a handful of debut live songs. This is the stuff dreams are made of, not only the up close nature of the performances captured in glorious MVspectrasound but the varied moods of acoustic/electric/environments. Intimate duo exchanges, legendary trios and full on Golden Road, mellow chill and life/luv smoke. Cork, tea and burn all around…Special guests/The Golden Road: rongoose/smokehound/herbcraft/steve gunn/andre vida/willie lane/p.g. six/jarvis taveniere/jeremy earl.

Originally released in 2007, "Eye in the Pines" is an outer limb exploration of one of the highest peaks of the MV & EE sound, it is also the first appearance of "Get Right Church" in a gutbucket style that would make will shade moan proud. Space blues crash against lonely tones of the purest amber tinted maple circuit and there is SPECTRASOUND out the ying yang. The material is predominantly the core duo exchange of Matt and Erika but Rongoose shows up on a coupla tracks to let rip some wicked precision bass and Ruth Garbus (of Feathers, Happy Birthday) lays down some wicked-solid awesome traps with vocal calls to ensnare even the furthest depths of MV's sasquatch guitar. Together, they all bag the beast within and in the deepest dub of the forest you can hear Jerry with Lee Perry, Blind Willie Johnson, Jo Ann Kelly, Jorma, Sonny Sharrock and good ol' Neil mellowin' all minds round the campfire. Come on by and roast one.   This was COM 30 issued in an edition of 99 copies packaged in metallic gold paper with hand painted covers by Matt Valentine with insert. 3 colors of paint were used along with a pinner for the grass. His offer took me by surprise, as the Child of Microtones imprint wasn’t known for keeping a stable outside the Tower axis.  Nevertheless, I hit my flanger with some pot cleaner and headed north to Guilford, relishing the idea of my own edition of 99. The recording process was country-simple: I spent the day and night riffing in the skyhouse while MV massaged the signal on its path from dov electronics to Tascam.  No prepared material; I just played what I felt, depending on the Slopbucket quotient, and tried to serve up enough raw meat to render a COM-worthy loaf.   EE furnished me with an exquisite sruti bedrock for the Fender-driven ragas.  When frets were fried we adjourned to McNeill’s, where, incidentally, I was hired on the spot to deliver...

“Used to be a time when MV & EE's main means of expression was their Child Of Microtones. Tons of full length albums would be released every year on that label, but nowadays, we're lucky if we get more than one per year). True the band seem to permanently be on the road so there is less time to record anything at the Maximum Arousal Farm. The Heroine Celestial Agriculture label has now gone on to become the main outlet for their live recordings (these seem to pop up everywhere like weed—no pun intended) and I'm not complaining really, but I do miss all the elaborately packaged albums from the early years. Hick Smoke is the first CoM release for 2009 (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more) and is an interesting mix between the band's bastardized Neil Young clones, their LSD-laced folk tunes and the infamous extended freak-out jams. Sure wish there would be more like this, cuz Hick Smoke is definitely a must for fans.”—The Reall Nitty Gritty.

Fantastic String Music (Ragas & Rainbow Blues) by Matt Valentine & Erika Elder

Fantastic String Music (Ragas & Rainbow Blues)
Child Of Microtones

"howdy lunar listeners, this was the 11th Child Of Microtones release from the good ol' moonphase known as 2003. we made 'em by hand, recorded it in spectrasound and it was originally issued in an edition of 99 numbered copies. it was sold at farmers markets, yard sales, through the great mail order services of that time (much obliged to YOD and ed the head!) and of course at gigs. we were known as the "mv & ee medicine show" during that period and much did flow. this was one of the orange sky peaks of our exploratory "fingerstyle noise/space" years and we were taking alotta love in, senses were wide open and the connections were running deep green. this was our 2nd year in vermont and we were startin' to settle into a groove, barely holdin' on with survival tactics thru sonics but the flannels and saris were startin' to have just the right amount of notions, much like the ragged ragas and blues within. stay awhile while flying. peace ∞, mv"
