When Robert Schneider, leader of The Apples in stereo and co-founder of the Elephant 6 Recording Co., moved to Atlanta to pursue his PhD in Mathematics five years ago, who could’ve predicted that he’d start a new band as well? Air-Sea Dolphin is the combo of guitarist Matt Chapman and bassist Mike Chapman (a.k.a. the Brothers Chaps from Homestar Runner), guitarist Ryan Sterritt and drummer Jamey Huggins (Of Montreal, Elfpower, Great Lakes), with Schneider singing and writing most of the songs. The band plays only very rarely in the Atlanta-Athens area, including an appearance on Adult Swim's Bloodfeast, but their geeky obsessions flourish inside ASD’s micro-universe: four-tracks, fuzz-tones, an Atari-based synthesizer, and even a series of retro arcade games to serve as music videos. Not to mention Air-Sea Dolphin makes wistful, lo-fi pop so catchy it will make your mind explode.   All tracks were previously released on lathe-cut singles. This single is in an edition of 250. A co-release with Third Uncle Records.  Expect a new EP in the fall!

Sloshy is the preeminent Pavement-facsimile in the Homestar Runner universe, best known for one time tricking Strong Bad into liking indie rock for a few days until he found out they were all just liberal arts dropouts with short hair and glasses. Lineup: Mitch Stockton (vocals), Clark Cross-Country (bass), Doug Tarndner (guitar), Dan DiMinilliditto (drums), Mark D.(guitar).   When Robert Schneider, leader of The Apples in stereo and co-founder of the Elephant 6 Recording Co., moved to Atlanta to pursue his PhD in Mathematics five years ago, who could’ve predicted that he’d start a new band as well? The Purkinje Shift have been an Atlanta powerhouse for twenty one years. Two guitars and drums. Black suits and ties. And those glasses, of course. That’s the Purkinje Shift. Having only self-released two CDs back in the 90s, the band has reconvened in recent years and this commemorates their first vinyl release in almost twenty years. Recorded by themselves and mixed by Mathis Hunter, “Mohawker” and “Mo Ave Tav” continue the regimented construct that these angular geniuses have always crafted. Some would say they’re as influenced by Ayler as they are by, say, Breadwinner, but therein lies the beauty of The Purkinje Shift. Crank it.

The death of Mark E. Smith has hit many a music fan hard. And when Honey Radar were challenged to record a Fall song for a single, they turned it in almost overnight! John Peel’s collection of saying “Mark E. Smith” and “The Fall” was from a YouTube clip. Long live The Fall.

So when bands of such varied yet similar origins as Major Stars and Bardo Pond both surprisingly agreed to doing a few shows with me (or in the case of Bardo, just two), I thought I’d go for the brass ring and have the two bands do a split single. Consider it a personal souvenir of a previously unimaginable rock vacation. Bardo Pond tend to be feverishly recording so I knew that wouldn’t be a problem. When they turned in their track “This Inner Light,” I wasn’t expecting anything other than 100-percent Bardo Pond. And right as rain, they delivered. Like the goddamned pizza delivery guy. Major Stars, on the other hand, appear to be quite reclusive, but I knew that Wayne Rogers wouldn’t be afraid of recording one of their furious sessions and lo and behold, they turned in the stone cold jam “S.L.T.” Recorded on Wayne’s four-track, it’s 100-percent Major Stars—a six piece that doesn’t quite spare a free second in their hyper guitar histrionics. — Henry Owings, Chunklet

Colony Of Taste / Extension Nine by Breathers / The Patient

Breathers / The Patient

Colony Of Taste / Extension Nine
Chunklet / Third Uncle

THE PATIENT:  There comes a time in one’s day to day existence where you egg a friend to get something done. Such is the case with The Patient. Started as a collaboration between co-founders of the Elephant Six Recording Company, Robert Schneider (Apples in stereo) and W. Cullen Hart (The Olivia Tremor Control), they’ve recorded for almost 20 years with nothing to show for it. This release changes that. Chunklet’s A&R staff challenged Robert to finish but ONE SONG and “Extension Nine” is the finished product. Recorded in Athens inside a geodisic dome, “Extension Nine” is more Talking Heads than Syd Barrett, accidental more than deliberate. Hart is on guitar and sound effects, Robert on vocals, Ben Mize on drums and multi-instrumentalist/luthier/wizard Scott Baxendale on guitar, Mellotron and all sorts of whirring noises. All recorded at Scott’s studio in Athens. This is their only release. So far.   When it was suggested that The Patient do a split single with Robert Schneider’s favorite Atlanta band, Breathers, everything came into place quite quickly.   Breathers:  "Colony of Taste" is about displacement as a result of urban colonization. It has been an unfortunate trend in the attempt's to "improve" city neighborhoods by accelerating an unattainable commodity-based culture. In result, this only tends to rob an area of its cultural identity as opposed to improving the lives and resources of those who have made it home for decades. The lyrics also acknowledge as a young person of privilege in...

Plastique / Suffering by Slugga

Slugga

Plastique / Suffering
Chunklet / Third Uncle

In 2016, when Third Uncle originally approached Chunklet Industries about doing a series of co-released lathe singles, the list of artists to approach quickly mounted. However, the first band we wanted to hear more by was none other than Atlanta's Slugga.   Although now broken up, this is their terminal release, but you'd never be able to tell that Slugga had all but packed up by the time of this recording. Raw. Savage. Brilliant.

Moment / Violet Violence by Shepherds

Shepherds

Moment / Violet Violence
Chunklet / Third Uncle

One of the spectacular groups fomenting in Atlanta 2016. The three-piece group Shepherds is spearheaded by aggressive politics and equally aggressive musicianship.   "Just days before the 2016 Presidential election goes down is a fitting time for soulful indie rock trio Shepherds’ to release their brand new “Moment” b/w “Violet Violence” 7-inch. The single is all about the existential dread of being black in America, and confronting the idea that in any moment your life or the lives of your loved ones could be taken away because of the color of their skin."  Bobby Moore, Creative Loafing

Often mentioned, rarely heard. All The Saints have been a glaring question mark in the Atlanta music scene since their inception over a decade ago. Known as the final new band to release a record on Touch & Go, their recorded output has dried up. Until now.   Recorded this spring here in town, "Here" and "Her" are clear signs of a band that hasn't weakened in their time away. In fact, they've become more powerful. The same three guys doing what they do and good god almighty do they do it better'n anybody else.

Summer Band / He Did Send In The Army by Thee Speaking Canaries

Thee Speaking Canaries

Summer Band / He Did Send In The Army
Chunklet / Third Uncle

A perfect one-two punch for these scorching summer months. Recorded back in '04, "Summer Band" was recorded at WRCT in Pittsburgh and is as full-on blast as the Canaries have ever been. The flip side is a red-hot rendition of Gang of Four's "He'd Send In The Army" recorded at WFMU studios, but retitled "He Did Send In The Army" after our then-President invaded a bunch of people in the desert.
