Man Or Astroman

Peel Session 1996
Chunklet

Chunklet Industries is proud to announce a breakthrough in broadcasting technology. For the first time, the BBC working hand-in-hand with intergalactic audio pioneers Man…or Astro-Man? present to you seven volumes of their famed U.K. radio sessions. The band’s third session for famed DJ John Peel is their first with Dexter X from Planet Q. And for completists, "Welcome to the Wicky Wacky World of John Peel" is credited that way in the BBC archive, but we all know it's "The Wayward Meteor." For John Peel, who was one the earliest, most visible and most vocal supporters of the band, all four songs that were recorded are being released on this sixth of seven singles.

The band’s fourth session for famed DJ John Peel is their second with Dexter X from Planet Q. Famously, John Peel who was one the earliest, most visible and most vocal supporters of the band, had an Astro shrine set up at his house. Five songs were recorded, but four are being released on this final installment of seven singles.

The band’s second session for famed UK DJ Mark Radcliffe is the broadcasting debut of Dexter X from Planet Q. 1996 was a great year for Astro-Man? Not only were they touring the world supported by the Touch & Go label, Dexter X's inclusion had a band far sharper and tighter. Four songs were recorded and, except for all the interview back'n'forth, all four tracks are being released on this fifth of seven singles.

Released just months after their debut album Dive, "Receiver" finds Lifeguard in a much different headspace. Colder and more direct than anything in their catalog, "Receiver" is the sound of the band fully coming into their own. Kai Slater and Asher Case’s guitars call, respond, and spider web across the track, centered on Isaac Lowenstein’s tasteful mid tempo beat. The splintered finale is the only time the song feels like it’s losing control, collapsing into its stuttered, feedback laced end. B side "Sun Ra Jane" oscillates between time signatures before opening up into a liminal zone that is truly the threshold of where Lifeguard have pushed their sound to date. A new sense of space and maturity saturates these songs, recorded and produced by the band at their Mixed Messages studio.

For the first time, the BBC working hand-in-hand with intergalactic audio pioneers Man…or Astro-Man? present to you seven volumes of their famed U.K. radio sessions. The band’s second session for famed DJ John Peel shows a band in full blossom. That day in March 1995 had Captain Zeno on second guitar and gives a trashier and far more frenetic and less precious sound than earlier sessions. For John Peel, who was one the earliest, most visible and most vocal supporters of the band, five songs were recorded and four tracks are being released on this fourth of seven singles.

"Thirty years ago, a brand new band called Harvey Milk took the stage at the illustrious 40 Watt Club in their hometown of Athens on April Fool's Day and performed the entirety of REM's album 'Reckoning.' There were a few recordings made, but only one survived. It was the audio from famed filmmaker Lance Bangs. Jump ahead to earlier this year, when the Harvey Milk bass player (Stephen Tanner to those taking notes) was at Chunklet HQ, we all began laughing about that performance and well, here we are. An edition of 400 copies and I suspect that'll be it. Each copy has a hand applied dayglo orange sticker on both the front and back."

Rhythm Forward + 2 by Limbo District

Limbo District

Rhythm Forward + 2
Chunklet

The B-52s, R.E.M., Pylon, Love Tractor... The roster of early Athens legends is quite distinguished, but one of their closest peers never so much as put a record out. That band is Limbo District. Active from April 1981 until their unceremonious disbanding in May 1983, there was a grand total of one movie made of them by Jim Herbert entitled "Carnival" while they existed. "They were the band's band," as Mark Cline from Love Tractor so eloquently put it on NPR. While the "Encased" track is on this, the band's first session in the summer/fall of 1981, two other tracks ("Knock Knock Lobo" and "Rhythm Forward") are included. The lyrics were written by vocalst Craig Woodall and songs were arranged and written by the band that included former Factory star Jerry Ayers (neé Jeremy Ayers, Silva Thin) on percussion, from northern France, Dominique Amet on Farfisa organ, Spaniard Margarita Bilbao on guitar and from Dublin, Georgia, Davey Stevenson on bass. This line up of the band existed no more than a few seasons and then went away to be reborn with Tim Lacy (later of Art in the Dark) and Kelly Crow both replacing Margarita on guitar in their own time. Behold the greatest ghost to ever haunt Athens, GA: Limbo District. Expect more. Much more. "Limbo District were an early 1980s Athens, Georgia band who never had any releases while they were around. Henry Owings has decided to rectify this situation. So here is their first release. Limbo...

Vangas has been a four piece based in Atlanta for a while now. Since they were all in high school, these friends have played their own music. Careening between moody, aggressive and melodic, Vangas have been a marvel to witness as they mature from teenagers into young men. Musically, they've become a force to admire. Live performances can vacillate between new jams and complete improv and all of it is lovely to experience. And here we stand, Vangas first vinyl full length. Four of these tracks were on limited lathe singles (also released by Chunklet), but for the first time, an outside engineer was allowed to mix and master Vangas' home recordings. Dan Dixon (Dropsonic, PLSPLS, producer of local acclaim) came in and whipped these tracks into the fury that rests before your feet. So behold. Vangas.

"During’s self-titled debut is a pipe bomb of originality, set to detonate and shake the foundation of the tired post-punk sounds of today when it hits via Chunklet on April 28th. And while some more obvious influences show across the ten track LP—like DEVO, Sonic Youth and Gang of Four—its strength lies in some of it’s wilder ideas and influences, creating a wholly new approach as yet unseen in the otherwise very tired genre of post-punk. 'I've always been super influenced by post punk stuff. The Fall is definitely up there, as well as WIRE and the Urinals, even the Gizmos,' says Fisher emphatically. 'The coolest thing about recording this LP was we didn't know what we were gonna end up with, it just sort of came out the way it came out. So while those influences are there because that's where we come from, none of it is totally clear because it’s jumbled up with so many of our other ideas.' Starting with a dizzying and frantic base, During's sound can best be classified using the hyper-cerebral approach of DEVO, garnished with touches of their more frenetic speedfreak acolytes Minneapolis’ Uranium Club. It’s from there that things drift into territories unseen, with a cold vocal delivery not unlike Mark E Smith, a quirky and free-spirited approach like the Cardiacs, atonal riffing that recalls Sonic Youth, and a mildly funk-focused bed to tether down the madness a la A Certain Ratio or the Contortions. All that comes baked in with...

***“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. ''We are a way for the universe to know itself. Also, y’all are really going to love this latest Man...or Astro-Man? record. There’s definitely some sick new jams on this one.”—CARL SAGAN. Contrary to popular belief, Pulsars aren’t really stars—or at least they aren’t “living” stars. Pulsars belong to a family of objects called neutron stars that form when a star more massive than the sun runs out of fuel in its core and collapses in on itself. This stellar death typically creates a massive explosion called a supernova. The neutron star is the dense nugget of material left over after this explosive death. We presently have five (5) of them for sale. Contact Astro HQ if you wish to inquire about purchasing a Pulsar (not a star). Pertaining to level 1-C operation personnel only, please note: The counter-back, cross-dimensional vector analysis will relegate the following mechanical device in an advanced reconstitution state within itself when all factors considered in Fig. A.613 are in a state of synchronous phase occurrence. Unnecessarily optriculating any diagnostically challenged auto-burst, ionically charged reversal, or any other predetermined encoding vectors inversely positioned to subtrancontaneous articulation, will cause the immediate redux of excessive dimensional system pressure in all spectral areas within the static margins. "Plus 1 Atlanta is a 214-page, full-color love letter to the city I’ve called home for over half my life. Spanning the years 1962 to 2003, the flyers, posters, handbills, ticket stubs, and other junk that make up this book show a city ahead of its time. Among the venues documented herein are I Defy, the Duke Tire Company Warehouse, PJ’s Nest, 688, the Metroplex, the International Ballroom, the Great Southeast Music Hall and Richards, The Point and the White Dot, TV Dinner, the Nitery, the Celebrity Club, C. W. Shaw’s, the Bistro, Whisk ’a Go-Go, Jennings Rose Room, Bedrock Café…and then there are the places you’ve never heard of! I’ve also included a handy two-page index listing the addresses of all of the venues." "And heck, that’s without even mentioning the bands! See early show posters and listings for some of Georgia’s finest: the Black Crowes, the Hampton Grease Band, Ru Paul and the U-Hauls, Mastodon. And there’s unearthed material meticulously scanned from the likes of the Brains, the Fans, Darryl Rhoades and the Hahavishnu Orchestra, Thermos Greenwood, EQT, Nasty Bucks, the Razor Boys, Keith and the Satellites (later to become the Georgia Satellites), Baby and the Pacifiers, Glenn Phillips, the Restraints, and man oh man, so many others that it practically boggles the mind." "With material culled from over 300 individual collections (and even a few from the author’s own personal garbage, thank you very much), Plus 1 Atlanta is a beastly group effort, and it shows."—Henry H....

You might be asking yourself “Is this some kind of gimmick?” or “Is this really a racquetball record?” or most importantly, “Is this really Mogwai?” The answer to all these questions is a resounding “YES!” The Crease is the “nom de performance” for Chunklet Industries Janitor of the Year (for seventeen years running, that is), none other than Henry Owings. Spawning from a crazy idea Owings hatched from years of being a racquetball player, he hired a professional recording engineer to come in and document (in all its 8-track spelendor) a racquetball match. Then, the isolated tracks were sent to Barry Burns from Mogwai, and The Crease “vs Mogwai” is the result. Includes a long-winded essay by and sweaty courtside photographs of The Crease.  This is Henry's sophomore release, and the debut of The Crease.  RIYL: Mogwai, Racquetball, sweaty dudes, looking at guitar pedals

"While putting finishing touches on their next full length, we asked Philly’s Honey Radar if they wanted to do a split single with the Bay Area’s Violent Change. And like that, a release was born. The Honey Radar side is a bit of a departure for them. Instead of working as a band, the pandemic offered them each a chance to do their own individual material and it was all folded together into one gigantic Honey Radar suite featuring songs by the members of the band. Sprawling, baby. That’s the Honey Radar way! The Violent Change side is more of their shambolic home recordings somewhere between The Glands and the Swell Maps all crammed into a cassette tape. A love affair of the most innocent variety." Edition of 200.

Miami, Florida’s Dove were a short lived back with Henry Wilson from FLOOR moving from drums to guitar and absolutely raging the way only Henry could. Twenty yeras ago, they walked into a Tampa studio and recorded songs that were released and almost immediately forgotten. Now, for the first time ever, these songs are available on vinyl. Edition of 150 copies.

Birds of Juneau by During

During

Birds of Juneau
Chunklet

We all have our respective misgivings about the dreaded pandemic bands, but with a pedigree like During, how could you not fall in love with them? Steven Fisher from the Wilful Boys, Jordan Lovelace from Pampers/Brandy and Cory Plump from Spray Paint. What could possibly go wrong? We were offered up five songs to choose from and it was a legit struggle to decide which two ended up on this, their debut release. Expect a full length on Chunklet some time this fall. Artwork by Ben from Cuntz (with some help by yours truly) and mastered by Mikey Young.

Preaching The Blues / Sex Beat
Chunklet

Come. The 90s Boston band. You know ‘em, you love ‘em. Back in 1993, they performed a set of Gun Club covers at TT the Bear’s in Cambridge, MA as part of Billy Ruane’s 36th birthday celebration. All these years later, there’s now a vinyl artifact of that special night. “Preaching The Blues” is sung by drummer Arthur Johnson and “Sex Beat” has Chris Brokaw singing. Come is also Thalia Zedek and Sean O’Brien. This is an edition of 250 copies.

Suffer Today / Timekeeper
Chunklet

Gotobeds fans rejoice! While the pandemic and/or parenthood keeps the Pittsburgh four piece at home, guitarist/singer Eli Kasan started a new band called formal wear. formal wear (all lowercase, btw) is a recording project between Eli and Ryan Oxley from London who sings and plays guitar in a band called Wicketkeeper. A chance meeting at the Sub Pop office led to formal wear's inception. Chunklet holds the proud distinction of releasing this single which is their debut.

Record The Mistakes
Chunklet

As often happens at Chunklet HQ, we're turned onto new bands by our loyal base of customers, and well, that's how we were turned onto Germ House. A one-man operation based out of Rhode Island, Germ House is equal parts Shrimper lo-fi trash and Nuggets garage swagger. A single that was recorded exclusively during the pandemic, and lucky for us, it's a gem.

The mid-90s in Madison, Wisconsin wasn’t necessarily the best time to be a band like Xerobot, but thank the gods that they decided to become one. Spastic, hyperactive scrawl evoking the original New York No Wave scene, Xerobot’s recorded output consisted of a CD, a couple split singles and a handful of comp appearances. This self titled LP assembles 37 tracks in almost as many minutes and collects all their releases and even additional unreleased material recorded by none other than Steve Albini. This LP was mastered by none other than Weasel Walter and includes a 16pp booklet featuring photos, first person accounts of the band and lyrics! First edition of 150 copies.  Scott Bonneville: I never knew them to vary the hierarchy of those three sonic components– the skronk guitar, the lurching machine rhythms, Greg’s squeal-howling -- and they executed them as though it were a grim duty. I never knew whether I was feeling excitement or respect. They didn't pander or compromise.  Sarah Hennies: I’m glad someone remembers it - there was so much great music that happened right on the cusp of the internet becoming a thing. The obscure, weird bands that broke up before digital music really took off have often been lost in the shuffle of history and I think it’s never a bad idea to introduce people to a bizarre little slice of history. It doesn’t surprise me at all, I’ve never seen another band like them.  Weasel Walter: Xerobot was...

Divisadero / Still Well

“I buy a lot of records and, more often than not, records sit here and then when I'm lucky, a band like Reverends just bonk me square in the noggin. Think Brian Jonestown Massacre. Think Calexico. Think the desert. A local band that sound like they should be riding around on dune buggies. "Divisadero" was the most listened song at Chunklet HQ for a good two months before I asked Reverends if we could do a release together. I'm thrilled to be releasing this.”—Henry Owings

"This is an archival single by Essex’s trash rock/no-fi geniuses Stirling. I was fortunate enough to release their only song “legitimately” back in the 90’s on a Chunklet comp CD, but this is five songs pressed and given to you as a bit of a gift. Pete (the drummer) is probably one of my oldest friends on the planet, John was from punk legends Understand and guitarist Sam Knee is the brain trust behind “A Scene In Between” and serves as a lovely glimpse as to what depraved sounds they’ve got going through their equally depraved minds." - Henry Owings

Live At The Earl by Black To Comm

Black To Comm

Live At The Earl
Chunklet

I had a gigantic four-day blowout for my 50th birthday a couple years ago. Apropos of nothing, I contacted Wayne Kramer to see if he’d come and perform again with the Atlanta backing band from a couple years prior. Wayne responded almost immediately saying that he was beyond flattered that I asked, but that he’d be celebrating his own 50th anniversary of “Kick Out The Jams” around the world. So without giving it a second thought, I asked the guys (Adam, Shannon and Adam, or as I call them The Three Adams) if they’d play some MC5 songs and let me sing. You know, let the birthday boy have some. Without a second hesitation, they all said yes. “Twist my arm,” said Adam McIntyre. My goal was to just hear “Black To Comm” live. Just to hear the riff on repeat and smoke a joint in the front row while it just goes on a loop. I should also add we got Van Bassman from the Buzzards of Fuzz to join us on second guitar filling the roll of Fred Smith. We opened with “Ramblin Rose” with McIntyre singing. Then, me with my absolutely hoarse voice from three days of partying at my 50th birthday behind me, we went into “Kick Out The Jams.” Then we did the rather obscure MC5 song “Gold” which they wrote for a movie towards the end of their career. I played toy piano. Then we did “Rocket Reducer (Rama Lama Fa Fa)” which was...

A man that wears many hats and an amulet around his neck, Mathis Hunter has been making music in Atlanta for decades. From his youthful outings with '90s punk stalwarts Quadiliacha, to the indie electronic/garage staple The Selmanaires in the '00s, to co-founding the disco-trap production team Noot d’ Noot, and countless bands in between, his resume looks schizophrenic at first glance. Curiously, it is his solo albums that tie all his previous work together through a heavy bias towards his first instrument: guitar. This new album, Mood Lighting, jumps through a dizzying array of guitar textures from the low rider funk of “Clone It Off” to the MPC-looped Manchester madness of “Love Becomes”, the text book classic rock of the title track, to the John Martyn-acoustic guitar run through an Echoplex inspired “She Had Designs” there is a guitar texture for everyone. It may be the lyrical content and vocal delivery that ties all these styles together as Hunter seems to be exploring the dissolving of a long term relationship. Wrestling with all of the anger, sadness, loneliness, as well as the temporary highs that come with the trauma of separation, the arc of the record is a direct one-to-one reflection of that process that provides quite a ride for the listener.

When left to our own device, of course we all want more Honey Radar in the world! "Bonus Snow" collects five songs performed live at three different WFMU sessions and one track of the band performing "Prole Art Threat" at Henry Owings's 50th birthday bash. Fittingly, Henry is singing. What an attention hog. All songs are live performances of songs that originally appear on the new Honey Radar singles comp. Except the Fall cover, although they cover a different song on the comp.

Sing The Snow Away: The Chunklet Years by Honey Radar

Honey Radar

Sing The Snow Away: The Chunklet Years
Chunklet

"Gimme nothing but jams." That was how Chunklet challenged Honey Radar upon the beginning of their long, torrid love affair back in 2015. What was turned in, and continues to be turned in, is nothing short of bedroom psych pop brilliance. "Sing The Snow Away: The Chunklet Years" shows a band that went from a one man recording project into the more sophisticated (yet still home recorded) band you hear on this album. Three proper singles, a smattering of split singles and some bonus tracks constitutes "Sing The Snow Away." Covers by The Monkees and The Fall? Yep, we've got you. All mastered by Drew Crumbaugh and the artwork constructed by Jason and Chunklet. Liner notes by esteemed scribe Byron Coley. Let the love affair continue.

This is one of those records that kinda just dropped in our laps, and we couldn't be happier. Southern California's Shark Toys are pals with OUR pals Terry and Rhonda who took it upon themselves to get their pals to work together. And lo and behold, we've got a humdinger of a single. "Out of Time" is an original and "Advice on Arrest" is a Desperate Bicycles cover. Yep, so that gives you a pretty good idea where this is heading. Don't dawdle, this won't last long. Pressed on colored vinyl.
