Y'gotta ask yourself how in god's name can such a spectacular band just keep cranking out single after single? Our good fortune at Chunklet Industries is that Atlanta's own The Purkinje Shift are one of the first bands we saw upon moving to this fair town (over 20 years ago!) and here they are, continuing to blow minds. Or at least ours! And man oh man, the Shift is absolutely incapable of disappointing. No right turn into singer songwriter territory, just mining the same angular instrumental material they're known and loved for. At this rate, expect a Purkinje Shift singles comp in no time! Crank it.

How? Like, seriously. How? How in the world can such an amazing band have a follow up single to their Chunklet debut ready in less than a few months? We consider ourselves very lucky, and well, Vangas...... Where to start? Think Cherubs. Think This Heat. Think The Fall. And that's just to get started! The rate with which Vangas is improving almost makes one wonder where the heck they're gonna go next. Well, look no further than the a-side which is the single note "Every Day Is The Same." Just stand back and let their atonal rush just wash over you. "Sandstone" is more of the same, and that's a good thing. Recorded by the band on analog technology, this is just a further glimpse into where Atlanta is going in 2020. Prepare yourselves. Astonishing. Just simply astonishing.

Josh Mckay, one-man-band writer/producer known for a wide range of projects (most recently as bassplayer in Deerhunter), offers up the debut of a new incarnation, The Corsican, this month via a juicy Valentine’s 7” from Chunklet Industries. This irresistible little platter reveals a widescreen, almost bipolar range, in its bold pairing of sides. The Valentine’s A-side, “Fever Believer”, embodies a loose hi-energy collision of turn-of-the-70s rock splattered with copious redhot Moog freakouts and manic drumming. It’s all throbbing abandon and urgent emotion. The B-side, “Love at First Sight”, is a deeply reimagined cover of the first solo single by iconic Welsh pop innovator, Stuart Moxham, (fka Young Marble Giants), during his short-run incarnation as The Gist. It unfolds in a silky, subtle, slow-dance kind of way, smoldering as if in antidote to the howling swirl of the A-side. A complete Valentine’s package. You ever have one of those nights where you're just picking your butt at the bar and from the next room a noise bleeds out where you go "what in the sam hell is that?" Well, that's how I first heard Vangas. Kids, I tell ya. Kids! Young'ns! 21 year old kids from the North Atlanta burbs. What they do is really bleak. Really odd. Really fresh. I was super excited to work with them and this is the first vinyl release they've made. I'm almost at a loss for who to compare them to, but just know they're very compelling. And yes, a follow up single is already being worked on.

Looking for where it's at in Atlanta 2019? Look no further than Warm Red. To describe them as "frenetic" would be kind. Suggesting a world where Mayyors take over the world and all bands are equally inspired by them, Warm Red hasn't even been around for a year and is already turning every head in town. Or rather, they're turning the heads of those that have gone out to see their furious live performances. After begging to release a single with them, Chunklet Industries is proud to release "Big Tiger" b/w "S.A.M." which barely scrapes the surface of what Warm Red's got. A corker of a single no matter which way you slice it. Essential.

Hovering somewhere amidst the world of psychedelia fostered by such heavy hitters as Loop or Splintered, ADCT went into local recording genius Dan Dixon's RCRD studio and knocked out two jams. You, dear listener, get to capture a glimpse of the majesty of this three piece. Turn it up.

A Tuesday night at the local rock club. I sat down to grab a beer and zone out as I'm wont to do. Bands start playing. As is often the case, most suck, but the first of four piqued my ears. I got up from my seat and went in to watch and was floored. Never saw the band before. Never so much as recognized anybody on stage, but man oh man, did they leave an impression. The name of the band was Uhm. I walked up to the drummer after they played and asked if they had anything for sale. Even a stupid rinky-dink cassette. Nothing. Very hastily, I suggested the Improvement Movement mobile recording unit come and record them at one of their houses in Lakewood, Georgia. Schedules were aligned and the band set up in the dining room of their drummer and they recorded six songs in three hours. Wow! Since that recording session, the band shelved their old moniker in favor of more appealing A Tower To The Stars. All The Saints

Look Like You're Going Somewhere

The path of All The Saints is one of a band that has almost deliberately hid in plain view. The story is simple: three Alabama kids raised on a diet of Crimson Tide football and loud “college rock” move to the big city of Atlanta in the early aughts. From here they were noticed by stalwart label Touch & Go and hold the distinction of being the final band being “signed” to the label before Corey Rusk decided to shutter daily operations. The next decade showed a band not just improving what they do, but instead almost expanding their performances to cinematic war zones. For a three piece, closed eyes would lead one to think a batallion of marauders were just around the bend. For those who relished their gigs, their live performances became infrequent occurences. Then in a moment of weed-inspired clarity, Chunklet decided to step in and suggest to the band recording a full length with producer Jason Kingsland. Kingsland is noted for recording records by Deerhunter and Band of Horses, amongst a zillion other credits. Recorded in three days in the Maze Studios over in Cabbagetown, the band plowed through tracking and overdubs. Over the following months, the record was finished. In parts sounding like Spacemen 3, The Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth and Sleep all rolled into one, Look Like You’re Going Somewhere is the record that All The Saints was destined to make.

This past fall, Josh from the Birmingham, Alabama band Schizos moved to his new home of Nashville, Tennessee. Upon moving there, he kept on saying how I should check out Part Time Filth. So I did, and loved what I heard. A nihilist one man band in the vein of, oh jeez, name it. Tony just destroys everything in his path. Damon Che is nothing short of a creative polymath. Don Caballero shows his mastery at the drums, but Thee Speaking Canaries? Well, it’s anybody’s guess, but his guitar histrionics show a musician who is practically bursting at the seams with crazed ideas and sounds. About two years ago, Che sent Chunklet a box of DAT tapes. His instructions? Find something that hadn’t been released. And well boy howdy, Chunklet found quite a bit. Almost an hour worth of material. All unreleased. All incredible. All the Canaries. Some was recorded with Al Sutton in 1995. Some in the early aughts. Some others recorded by Che himself. All a mash up. To those who remember the “other” Canaries album that Chunklet released (Platter Base Must Be Constructed Of Moon Rock to those keeping notes of such things), consider this album a companion piece. Instrumental. No vocals. Totally bonkers playing.

2018 marks the year Dasher ended. Dasher is dead. Long live Dasher. However, before they packed it up, Kylee Kimbrough suggested recording their terminal show in Atlanta to capture their raw, swirling savagery. Do they play “Rambo”? “Soviet”? Nope, all new material. None of it had ever been recorded and none of it will ever be recorded again. Last show, remember? Anyway, recorded in a hodgepodge mix between a field recorder and iPhone, Dear Humans is a love letter for fans, but also captures the Bloomington, Indiana trio line up at the height of their powers. The cover is a photo of the stage shortly after they levelled one and the type? Well, it’s all handwritten by seven-year old Charlotte Owings. Yep, it’s a family affair.

“I think one of the first dozen or so bands I saw upon moving to Atlanta in 1997 was The Purkinje Shift. Within moments of seeing them perform, I was in love. The band fizzled out in 2000 at a final show at the Moreland Avenue Tavern (MoAveTav), and a couple projects popped up afterwards. Moreland Audio and Home of the Wildcats. They were all great, trust me.  Then, more than a few years ago, the guitarists (Ben and Gary, for those keeping notes on such things) decided to start jamming with Lee “Cricket” Corum on skins and The Purkinje Shift was back in operation.  “Threads” is the band’s fourth full length, but their very first to be on 12” vinyl. Portland Oregon’s EYELIDS release their new 7” (and 11th vinyl release within their 5 year history!) via the legendary Chunklet Records (Zach Galafinakis, Pylon, Olivia Tremor Control, Apples In Stereo). Bringing together what Eyelids does best matching beautiful music to bummer vibes or what they simply call “lopsided rock”. We think it’s their catchiest release to date but it also has the heaviest lyrical weight to date capturing the current mood of hope and hopelessness.   The band is also putting out the new record to lead into their extensive 2019 touring schedule and both songs are exclusive to this 7” (their 3rd full length, “The Accidental Falls”, was produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M. and will be out Fall 2019). They also have a new video to go with this 7” (their previous ones have premiered on pitchfork, tidal, big takeover and mojo) and will be premiering before street date.  Eyelids were formed from members of Guided By Voices, The Decemberists, Malkmus/Jicks & Elliott Smith’s band. They’ve toured all over the world with Dream Syndicate, The Charlatans, Rain Parade, The Cribs, The Drive-By Truckers and Fruit Bats.

As the good fortune of Omni continues to soar, Chunklet is fortunate to release yet another single by this Atlanta three piece. Recorded exclusively for this single, “Sunset Preacher” and “Confessional” are a resounding one-two in the gut reaffirming, yet again, that Omni are far and away one of the best bands going right now. Frankie and Phillip continue to tighten the screws in their song writing and effortlessly bounding further down the path started by their masterpiece records on Trouble in Mind. Hot off the heels of their second full length on Sub Pop and a singles collection on Comedy Minus One, Pittsburgh’s The Gotobeds do a verbatim song-by-song remake of Redd Kross’s infamous debut EP. Although originally released as a 12-inch in a disco jacket, this version is handily redone as a 7-inch. The band has performed this EP quite often, and even a couple times with Chunklet’s owner on vocals. Limited (as to avoid potential legal headaches), it’s further affirmation of what an exceptional band The Gotobeds have become.  There will be a grand total of one release show in Pittsburgh in December along with Chunklet labelmates Honey Radar from Philadelphia and Henry Owings doing selections from his debut single “Micro-Impressions Vol. 1”.  Edition of 200.

Material Girls owe nothing in the way of explanation. This is realized as soon as the first of six pairs of heels hits whatever stage you are lucky to be standing in front of. Boasting tenebrous bass-lines, libidinous horns, snarling guitars, and perpetually rotating vocalists, this sextet has proven that the “rock ’n’ roll band” has become a tired algorithm in a world where the populus is scrolling and swiping their lives away. After performing their first show in November of 2016, it only took a matter of weeks before word of their lipstick-stained, wine-drunk calamity of a live show spread up and down the east coast as the band played to enthusiastic crowds in New York, Philadelphia, DC, Nashville, and their native Atlanta. From streets paved in chicken bones and swisher guts, the eighth circle of Hell, East Atlanta trash babies in dollar store eyeliner, Material Girls have a heel on the throat of modern entertainment.

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  The Elephant 6 Collective’s family tree is beyond diverse. The first seed to take hold was E6-001, the 1993 self-titled EP (referred to by fans as the Tidal Wave EP) by The Apples in Stereo, then known simply as The Apples. It was recorded and produced on four-track cassette by Elephant 6 co-founder Robert Schneider, who would soon apply his genius to the records by Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Minders, Beulah, and countless others in the E6 pantheon. In 1994, the renamed Apples In Stereo released a subsequent EP on the Bus Stop Label along with a peppering of seven-inch split singles before their first full length, Fun Trick Noisemaker, came out in 1995. The band has consistently stated that vinyl is the primary medium for, in the words of the Summer 1993 E6 catalog, their “dense chiming classic pop... soaked in fuzz.” Long out of print, Science Faire collects these earliest recordings as originally released, how meant to be heard: on seven-inch vinyl! Complete with posters, stickers and books, Science Faire has been lovingly reproduced. Each side stretches to the sonic limit with maximum music per side, just as with the originals. And as with the original 1996 pressing of this collection, there is never-before-seen artwork (for the “Time for Bed” single) from the early ’90s by Elephant 6 co-founder W. ***At the height of their powers, PYLON performed their final show at the Mad Hatter in their hometown, Athens, GA, in the winter of 1983. Two enterprising gentlemen professionally filmed and recorded this show as a pilot for a potential Austin City Limits-style show, but quickly abandoned the project. ***December 1991. Mere months into their existence, a 3-piece DON CABALLERO drove to the Carnegie Mellon campus & knocked out 11 songs.
