Eighties Cheesecake by Ellard, Tom

Ellard, Tom

Eighties Cheesecake
Dark Entries

BACK IN STOCK!!! TOM ELLARD is the creative force behind Australian post-punk band SEVERED HEADS. In 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, ‘80s Cheesecake and Snappy Carrion. These cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental Severed Heads’ albums Clean and Blubberknife before the start of something new with Since The Accident. With the advent of the then new Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, Tom began to write more beat driven material. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine, Kawai S100F and SH-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. Two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the B-side of the Dead Eyes Opened single. Fast forward 30 years, Tom was horrified to find that a copy of the ‘80s Cheesecake cassette was listed for an absurd amount of money on eBay. He immediately made all of the material available on CD and eventually digitally as well. There was much discussion over how to best sequence this LP. Most of the tracks from the original two c60 cassettes have been included, as well as some previously unreleased material, finally completed after having been left abandoned back in 1982. This has only become possible with recent digital tools, but every element you hear is from thirty years ago, trimmed, re-aligned, and assembled in the fashion that was originally intended. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley....

Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Vol. 1 & 2
Dark Entries

***We combined both Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 1 and 2 on a single CD! BART is Dark Entries’ compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) made between 1978-1988. Towards the end of the ‘70s, San Francisco’s experimental music scene clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground. By the early to mid ‘80s the DIY music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new wave, post punk, and synthpop, quite similar to New York’s No Wave scene and Berlin’s Neue Deutsche Welle. This compilation connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of eleven forgotten Bay Area bands. BART Volume 1 features a Korg-heavy assault from Danville’s utterly obscure Nominal State; two little-known left-field electronic dance gems from Batang Frisco and Quiet Room; Berkeley’s answer to darkwave, Necropolis of Love; a synth-driven drama fest from drag performance troupe Wasp Women; quirky lo-fi gothic pop from one man band Distant Thunder; a gay Hi-NRG anthem delivered by Danny Boy and the Serious Party Gods; two lesser know gems from SF synth legends Voice Farm and Los Microwaves; and the futuristic pulsing synth-punk of Standard of Living and the Units. BART Volume 2 features slow, dystopian horror from pioneering industrial group Factrix; crushing, motorik noise from acid punks Chrome; amphetamine-driven synth punk from Red Asphalt; an early demo, never released on vinyl, from legendary post punk band Tuxedoomon; chilling atmospheric drone from...

Holland Tunnel Dive by Implog

Implog

Holland Tunnel Dive
Dark Entries

***impLOG was the solo project of DON CHRISTENSEN after leaving New York No Wave group THE CONTORTIONS in 1979. He began making music using found sounds, a Univox drum machine, guitar stomp boxes, Casio keyboards and percussion instruments. Eventually Christensen gave a demo tape to Charles Ball at Lust/Unlust Records, who loved it, releasing “Holland Tunnel Dive” and “On B’way” on 12-inch vinyl in 1980. “Holland Tunnel Dive” is a monotone lament, with a narrator reciting a list of all that is missing in his life over a sparse, mechanical beat. A variable speed Milwaukee drill creeps its way into the song, eventually reaching cacophonous levels. After four minutes of industrial motorik, an upbeat saxophone riff breaks out unexpectedly, unsettling the listener even further. On the B-side is a deranged version of the Lieber and Stoller show tune “On Broadway” featuring lead guitar by JODY HARRIS of The Contortions. The record perfectly captures the dark and seedy vibe of downtown New York in the early ’80s. Both tracks have been remastered from the original master tapes for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the original, featuring on the front cover an illustration of a hydraulic pump against a taxi-cab yellow background. Each copy includes a double-sided insert with lyrics, never-before-seen photos and liner notes by Christensen. (STREET DATE - 9/16/2014)

***Dark Entries is proud to release Uno, a collection of early recordings from seminal Italian electronic act KIRLIAN CAMERA. Keyboardist / vocalist ANGELO BERGAMINI founded the project in Parma in 1979, initially naming it Suicide Commando, before discovering another project using the same name. By 1980, Bergamini had recruited singer SIMONA BUJA, keyboardist FABRIZIO CHIARI and bassist MAURO MONTACCHINI. Their demo cassette Dawn attracted the attention of Italian Records, a popular independent label. The following year, Montacchini left the band and was replaced by GIORGIO VECCHI, and Kirlian Camera recorded their self-titled debut mini-LP. Uno compiles the four songs from Kirlian Camera on Side A and the six songs from the demo cassette on Side B. Also included is the bonus track “Minitech,” originally released in 1981 on flexi-disc. Kirlian Camera’s clean, minimalist new wave is marked by strong haunting melodies, slow-moving synth washes and stark, dramatic vocals. All songs are remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The artwork replicates the original 12” featuring a painting of a royal Italian noble on the front and black and white photos of the band on the back. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a never-before-seen photo of Bergamini and Buja taken from an early concert. (STREET DATE - 9/16/2014)

Opera Multi Steel was born during the winter of 1983 in Bourges, a city in the center of France. Originally a trio comprised of Franck Lopez (vocals, keyboards, guitars), his brother Patrick L. Robin (vocals, percussion) and Catherine M. Marie (keyboards, vocals), the band began to record demos utilizing an Elex keyboard, Casio VL-Tone, Roland TR-606 drum machine, guitars and pedals. Layering organ-like keyboards over drum machine snares and a woodwind recorder, they created a unique style of Medieval or Baroque synth pop, and released their self-titled debut EP on their own label Orcadia Machina in 1984. The four songs range from fast and bright new wave influenced by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s Electricity and slower, brooding dark wave ballads like Faith-era Cure that foreshadowed the classic French cold wave sounds of their debut album Catherdrale released the following year.  All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is a die-cut replica of the original sleeve using master templates the band created in 1984 and offset printed on heavy French off-white card stock. Each copy includes an inner sleeve printed with lyrics and 17th century perspective line drawings by Jean Vredeman de Vries. Celebrate the 30th anniversary of these new wave troubadours’ earliest beginnings.

Executive Slacks was spawned in the humidity of post-industrial Philadelphia by restless art students Matt Marello, John Young and Albert Ganss. Starting with performance art in subways, they soon took their angst-ridden act to galleries and night clubs. The trio recorded four songs in the fall of 1982 that became their self-titled EP released by local independent label Red Records in 1983.  On this debut, Marello roars and churns out white-hot shards of guitar while Young’s short-circuited noise machines and Ganss’s industrial metal drums create dramatic body rhythms. The Slacks drew their influences from contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire and Tuxedomoon, but also from extremes like disco and dadaism. Songs were created using heavily modified synthesizers and various percussive instruments: industrial steel drums, a filing cabinet, metal rods and an African drum covered in antelope skin. Executive Slacks’ unique brew of primitive electronics, harsh guitars and aggressive vocals inspired many bands like Ministry, Front 242 and Skinny Puppy. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in the original jacket featuring a painting by Ganss, each copy includes an eight-page booklet with lyrics, photos and press clippings from the band’s archives. As James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem said of “The Bus”: “I always wanted to make a sound like that.”

Dead Eyes Opened by Severed Heads

Severed Heads

Dead Eyes Opened
Dark Entries

Severed Heads are one of the longest standing bands to have emerged from the Australian post-punk and experimental scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, and were an early outfit to incorporate elements of industrial noise-generation, tape-cutting and looping, and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed, song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many lineup changes featuring Gary Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, the project became the solo vehicle for composer Tom Ellard.  In 1983 Severed Heads released a C-60 cassette called Since the Accident that grabbed the attention of Ink Records, a subsidiary of Virgin in the UK. Ellard added a throwaway track at the last minute to fill out the cassette, not wanting to leave an unseemly gap at the end. The song, “Dead Eyes Opened,” was catchy enough to get a lot of airplay on the main noncommercial radio station in Sydney, and the band was asked to make it into a 12-inch single. For this extended version, Ellard and producer Patrick Gibson went to M-Squared studio and passed the multi-tracked recordings through various EQs and delays. “Dead Eyes Opened” features samples from a radio program narrated by Edgar Lustgarten, a crime journalist from England, referencing a double-murder case that occurred in 1924. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine and an SH-1 synthesizer. A KORG PolySix was used for strings and additional atmospheric elements. The lead solo was a Casiotone run through an Octaver...

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Xymox was founded in 1983 in Nijmegen, a city in the east of the Netherlands, by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitars, synthesizers) and Anka Wolbert (vocals, bass). In April of that year, Moorings bought a TEAC 144 four-track tape recorder and the duo moved to Amsterdam; they began to record songs using a Yamaha CS-15, Korg MS-10 and MS-20, a BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-550, guitar and effects pedals. First layering the drone-like tones of monophonic synthesizers over tape loops and rhythm tracks, the pair recorded guitar and bass without the use of computers. The five-song Subsequent Pleasures EP was released in 1984 and limited to 500 vinyl copies, serving as a precursor to the dark wave sounds they would champion on their self-titled debut on 4AD the following year. Also of note, the track “Muscovite Musquito” was later re-recorded for the compilation album Lonely Is an Eyesore released by 4AD in 1987.  All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jackets have been silk-screened with pink and grey paint, using the original plates Wolbert created in 1984, and each copy includes a foldout pink newsprint poster with never-before-seen photos of the band, lyrics and liner notes by Wolbert and Moorings. ***ART FINE was the duo of FABRICE BELLINI (electronics, vocals) and RUSH BLAKEMANN (guitar, synthesizer) from Turin, Italy. They met in art school and became friends, inspired by New Wave, dance and electronic music. They recorded their only single “Dark Silence” in November of 1984, which was released by Discomagic in 1985.  Fabrice programmed the electronic drums using SCI Drumtraks and added extra tracks on the Simmons SDSV. Rush played electric guitar and the Yamaha piano notes at the start of the song.  Guest musicians SILVANO BORGATTA and RICCARDO ROSA. The “da da da da da" voice effect was done by engineer GIGI GUERRIERI, who cut and spliced a tape rather than using a sampler, which was too expensive at the time. “Dark Silence” tells the love story of beautiful girl who Fabrice saw many times but could not reach. He called her Dark Silence, for her dark hair and eyes and the silence unwanted between them. The B-side features a remixed version with extended breaks and dubbed out bass lines and vocals.  Both songs are remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of the duo and that Art Fine logo in puzzle pieces. ***Dark Entries Editions is excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Italo Disco club hit “Walking In The Neon.” PETER RICHARD was the alias first adopted in 1979 by producer and vocalist WALTER BEINAT. His best known song was “Walking In The Neon,” released as a maxi-single on Italian label Good Vibes in 1985. For this single Richard teamed up with the production duo of GIGI FARINA and FRANCO RAGO, best known for their projects ‘LECTRIC WORKERS, DECADENCE, EXPANSIVES and WANEXA. "Walking In The Neon" was written by Rago & Farina with help from CHUCK ROLANDO, member of Italian disco group PASSENGERS. The track's arrangement was done by Italian disco pioneer CELSO VALLI who wrote club classics for Macho, Azoto, Passengers and Tantra, to name a few.   On the A-side is the “Club Version,” an uptempo classic that sounds like a dream encounter between mid-80s New Order and hi-NRG legends Patrick Cowley and Bobby Orlando. Clocking in at nearly 9 minutes, it is purely dance-floor oriented on an epic scale, with evolving hooks and melodies. The B-side features a shorter dub version with extended breaks and bass lines. Both songs are remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Pressed on neon orange vinyl, as it was when originally released in 1985.

***Pattern Completion is the debut album from San Francisco-based contemporary artist MICHAEL WOOD as REDREDRED. Previously recording as one half of PRIMARY COLORS , Wood started his REDREDRED project in 2012. Taking inspiration from Front 242, Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle, Nietzsche and Sartre, Wood utilizes a simple setup of vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines, and records them on reel-to-reel. Pattern Completion was originally planned as a 4 song cassette EP that was only released digitally. This new full length features those four tracks, remixed and remastered on the A Side, and four unreleased tracks on the B side. The material on Pattern Completion is strongly influenced by Wood's former live/work studio space in the Bayview District of San Francisco, an area surrounded by recycling facilities and water treatment plants. The songs reflect this industrial atmosphere, stacking treated rhythm box patterns, quivering synthesizers, and mechanical vocals. Pattern Completion develops the strain of futuristic, mutant industrial pioneered by San Francisco groups like Tuxedomoon and Factrix, with REDREDRED adding his own brand of damaged angular rhythms. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a jacket featuring photography by MELISSA JOY BRENNER and contains a double sided insert 11x11 with lyrics.

Dark Entries

***Dark Entries is proud to release Versions Of A Life, a collection of recorded works by London, UK post-punk band SKI PATROL Formed in 1979 by singer IAN LOWERY and guitarist NICK CLIFT, the band played moody, epic, angular music. Active until late 1981, Ski Patrol’s musical and lyrical output mirrored the dub-reggae influences of their Brixton and Ladbroke Grove home-bases, the civil unrest of post-punk Britain and the freedom to push aside the rock rulebook as had been done by their peers PiL and Gang Of Four. They self-released their first single in early 1980 with the help of Rough Trade and came to the attention of Malicious Damage, a label & management operation, formed to release the early works of Killing Joke. This association produced the band’s biggest success, the 1980 indie chart hit "Agent Orange" (featuring Killing Joke’s JAZ COLEMAN on synth). Versions Of A Life collects Ski Patrol’s recorded output in one place for the first time. This anthology also shines a light on the darkly comic, paranoid, often elegiac gutter poetry of the late Ian Lowery, who passed away in 2001. Including the band’s first two singles, previously unreleased mixes of their third single and three unreleased songs from their last studio session. ***CRASH COURSE IN SCIENCE are a post punk band that formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, DALE FELICIELLO, MALLORY YAGO and MICHAEL ZODOROZNY, met while attending art school.  They began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat writing. CCIS avoids conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats.Their first single, “Cakes in the Home” was released in 1979 and their 4-song 12" EP Signals From Pier Thirteen in 1981. Pier 13 was an abandoned coal-loading pier along the Delaware River near where CCIS rehearsed. The band went there often and was inspired by the huge silent machinery, shapes, shadows, ghosts and debris. The songs 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns' quickly became club favorites during the early ‘80s. This EP's raw, percussive sound influenced both techno and industrial music in later years. CCIS feel a strong connection to Throbbing Gristle, although they consider themselves as working in a parallel universe rather than being influenced by them. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring stark black and white photos of Pier 13. ***LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS is the electro-industrial project of UWE SCHMIDT aka ATOM™ or SENOR COCONUT from Germany. Uwe Schmidt began making music in the early 1980s, first playing drums, then switching to programming a drum computer after he had heard a Linn Drum on the radio. In 1986 he co-founded the cassette label N.G. Medien, on which his first musical work under the name LASSIGUE BENDTHAUS, "The Engineer's Love", was released. Soon after, he started to work on what would become his first official record release, the album Matter. The recordings and production began in 1986 and took almost 4 years, until the album finally came out in 1991 on the German Parade Amoureuse label. Musically somewhere between late "Industrial" and "Electronic Body Music", yet already anticipating "Acid" and "Techno", this production managed to cause quite a stir, due to its advanced production techniques. Songs pay strong homage to Kraftwerk, approaching the early industrial dance scene with a softer sequential approach than most of his contemporaries. Matter is a hermetic reflection about the relationship between perception, nature, science, technology and labor. This reissue comprises the entire 1991 Matter LP, as well a bonus 7" record containing 2 tracks never before released on vinyl. Re-membering Dwayne
Dark Entries

***At the end of 1981, brothers DARRIN and STEPHEN HUSS and schoolmate DWAYNE GOETTEL performed for the first time as PSYCHE in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their live show was a combination of horror and electronics that was completely unprecedented in Western Canada. Although Goettel and the Huss brothers parted ways before Psyche was to release any material, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel's performances were preserved in the band's vaults. Now, 19 years after Goettel's untimely passing in 1995, Dark Entries records presents Re-Membering Dwayne, the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. All tracks were recorded and mixed on 4-track during a single day in March of 1983. Psyche's early material is visceral and abrasive, a far cry from the sleek, dark synthpop they'd later become known for. Like the body horror films of fellow Canadian David Cronenberg,  Psyche disquietingly conflate the organic and the mechanical, calling into question the limits of the human form. Dwayne, who would join SKINNY PUPPY a few years later, contributes heavily to this more aggressive, disturbing sound.  All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with excerpts from Darrin Huss' diary, unpublished photos of Psyche with Dwayne, and an essay by Darrin reflecting on Psyche's past and the Goettel legacy as well as lyrics. He would be inspired by Joy Division and other Factory releases, The Danse Society and Cocteau Twins. He gathered a some session musicians and a female backup vocalist. They recorded with live drums, TR-808 drum machine, Roland JX3P synthesizer, electric guitar and bass. Eventually Patrick bought a Greengate DE-3 sampler, using the brains of an Apple 2E with a keyboard bolted onto it. He crafted loops made from a deconstructed upright piano, hitting the strings directly with a drum stick. Lè Travo made their first appearance on a split LP with Fred A in 1984. Erring and Errant is their debut 7 song LP originally released in 1985. For the reissue 3 bonus songs from the split LP have been added. The songs are coldwave in the vein of Weimar Gesang, Opera Multi Steel, and Clan of Xymox. Guitar, bass and sample interplay with piano and synthesizers with dark and forbidding crescendos in the fast numbers, and elegaic melancholy in the slow tracks. The vocals are delivered with a sense of urgency, while the lyrics are inspired by avant-garde movements such as futurism and constructivism, as well as science fiction and existentialism. All songs have been transferred from the original reel to reels and carefully remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a...

Maritime Tatami
Dark Entries

***BACK IN PRINT!!!  “For our 55th release we are launching a special series called Dark Entries Editions, dedicated to 12" singles made for the dance floor. The first release in this series is VICTROLA, the duo of ANTONIO “EZE” CUSCINA and CARLO SMERIGLIO from Italy. The band formed in Messina, but later relocated to Florence to join the rich musical scene there with Neon, Pankow, Alexander Robotnick and Diaframma. Beginning as a 4-piece combo (two guitarists, bassist, drummer) in 1979, they slimmed down to a synthesizer and guitar-based duo a few years later. Their sole release was the "Maritime Tatami" / "A Game Of Despair" EP, from 1983. Using an array of now-classic Roland synthesizers (TR 606, TR 303 Bassline, Juno 6) plus a Korg Polysix and Fender Stratocaster, they crafted two darkwave ballads. "Maritime Tatami" engulfs the listener with trance-inducing synth lines and melancholic vocals over its epic 8 minutes. Oblique minor-key bass lines provide an anchor while snappy, brittle 606 rhythms propel the track along. The lyrics tell the story of Tatami, a boy from a fishing town who yearns for a new life in the big city. "A Game of Despair," on the flipside, is a haunting crawl through the eyes of a woman left by her lover. An angular guitar riff repeats hypnotically, as fragile icy synth lines chime emptily above it. Each song has been carefully remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed...

***BACK IN PRINT!!!  Received an 8.3 rating from Pitchfork.  Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the cannon of disco music, PATRICK COWLEY created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music coined "The San Francisco Sound." This very special LP features a compilation of restored Cowley productions unearthed in the garage of vintage gay porn company Fox Studio. Spanning nearly 90 minutes, the 11 tracks (originally recorded between 1973 and 1981), epitomize Cowley's forward thinking and his affinity for mixing elements of varying styles of music. Simply put, Cowley was a musical trailblazer ahead of his time. His credits as a producer include SYLVESTER's "Do You Wanna Funk,” PAUL PARKER’s "Right on Target" and collaborations with JORGE SOCCARAS of INDOOR LIFE—this is just the tip of the iceberg. An early victim of AIDS, Cowley passed away at the age of 32; these recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon from us. Featuring over 80 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from two Fox Studio films, Muscle Up and School Daze, never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings, then remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy dual pocket gatefold featuring classic gay porn imagery from the Fox Studio vaults plus an essay from Indoor Life vocalist, JORGE SOCCARRAS. ***BACK IN PRINT!!!  Dark Entries is proud to present the debut album by FIGURE STUDY, a contemporary band from New York. Figure Study is the Manhattan-based duo of NATHAN ANTOLIK and APRIL CHALPARA. They formed in 2009, after meeting through the Wierd Records weekly party, where they would play their first concert soon after. While their debut 7" contained two songs recorded in 2009, this full length contains all new material recorded throughout the past year. For their debut self-titled album, Figure Study utilizes a carefully tailored set up of vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines. Figure Study creates a lush sound where haunting vocals echo over dark melodies that reflect an isolated and disintegrating world. Songs flux between dissonant dance numbers and more sparse, somber compositions, each carrying a sense of urgency and modernism. Figure Study's sound includes influences from such early underground artists as Kirlian Camera, Nine Circles, and The Actor. The album was recorded in their small Chinatown studio using a sparse set-up of analog synthesizers, drum machines and sequencers. It was mixed at The Wave Lab in Brooklyn by AJ TISSIAN and mastered for vinyl at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley by GEORGE HORN. Each LP is packaged in a specially designed jacket and includes an insert with lyrics. Figure Study draw their own model using shapes and forms from the synthetic landscape.

***Dark Entires is excited to introduce the debut album Less Ness from contemporary Bay Area duo, MAX + MARA. Their collaboration began in 2012. Max is based in Oakland and has been a part of various projects most notably BROTMAN and SHORT and his current solo work as BUSINESS ETIQUETTE. Mara is based in San Francisco and is known for her solo work as GROUP RHODA. On Less Ness they worked with a hardware set up: 808 and Elektron drum machine, Moog, MAM, and Sequential Circuits synth with splashes of Mono/Poly and collage elements, vocoder lines and dubbed out vocals. They step away from the the computer as much as possible and prefer that their ideas can be traced back to the tools so that a sense of physicality remains. They find inspiration from all kinds of far out sounds, most notably dub, industrial, and various drug culture tangents. Lyrically the songs revolve around topics such as escapism, looking though cultural windows, and character role development. Some songs are a bit more surrealist in content with elements of hard realism and critical commentary. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a jacket featuring a painting by SHANA WHY. Prepare to turn your gaze to the things in front of you and away from screen generated culture and its mimicry of social participation.

***Dark Entries is proud to release the sophomore EP Occupations from San Francisco based synth trio INHALT. Consisting of European and East Coast natives—MATIA SIMOViCH, BRYAN GIBBS, and PHILIP WINIGER—Inhalt’s core operative strategy is of sonic fidelity and integrity rather than nostalgia. Living through the rise of a surveillance society, neo-liberal agendas, and the permeation of the ephemeral into popular culture, Inhalt return with a focused commentary in the form of the Occupations EP. The record was produced over a year and a half, and mixed in both Austria and California, employing the best of modern and vintage techniques and technology. The sound is Inhalt’s interpretation of the border between the voice driven song form and the expansive, extended 12" arrangement. It is informed equally by the soundtracks of John Carpenter, as much as the vastness and sheen of Trevor Horn. Inhalt wrote and produced the EP in their own Bunker Studio in San Francisco. Each EP is housed in a specially designed jacket by Leo Merz and includes a lyric sheet.

***Dark Entries is celebrating its 50th release with LEAETHER STRIP Teenage Demos. Leæther Strip is the solo-project of Danish electronic industrial artist CLAUS LARSEN. Discovered by the German techno artist and producer Talla 2XLC, Leaether Strip quickly built a buzz as one of the most exciting emerging acts in Europe in the early ‘90s. Teenage Demos is a collection of Claus Larsen’s earliest recordings. Nine demo songs recorded between 1982 and 1986 never before released on vinyl. Influenced by Fad Gadget, Depeche Mode and Jean Michel Jarre, Claus began creating synth-pop melodies at age 14. Though the melodies were catchy and upbeat they had a hidden melancholy because Claus knew that he was different than others. “Dreaming” was his first attempt to “come out” to himself as a queer kid. Lyrically the songs reflected what was going on in his head: youth, hope and dreams. Claus used a simple set up: Moog Prodigy, Yamaha drum machine, delay pedal and spring reverb. He would record the bass and drums on a double cassette recorder, without midi, sequencers or preset sounds. By 1985, Claus composed instrumental songs as the final three tracks on this album illustrate. Each song has been carefully remastered from the original masters for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with original photograph of a 15-year old Claus as well as an insert with lyrics, photos and an interview. Teenage Demos is a sneak peak into the world...

***Dark Entries is proud to release the debut vinyl EP from BEZIER entitled Ensconced.  Bézier is the moniker of all-live-analog electronic wizard ROBERT YANG from San Francisco. Enchanted by the Cybernetic Broadcasting System (CBS), Robert started DJing as ROBOT HUSTLE, joining the Honey Soundsystem collective in 2007. Robert writes hooks, patterns and melodies in an automatic, stream of consciousness fashion. Memory and nostalgia play a big part in constructing his music. Ensconced is the follow up to Bezier's debut cassette, released in 2012 on Break-Up records. The tile relates to themes of comfort and safety as well as complacency and entrapment. Influences range from the futuristic landscape of Syd Mead to the melodic energy of Patrick Cowley and the subdued, hidden motifs of My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless." Bézier blends elements of Hi-NRG and dark dance to drive the mysterious underwater instrumentals of "Ensconced." Bezier's studio set up includes a variety of vintage Roland and Korg synthesizers as well as the Italo Disco favorite LinnDrum. These six tracks were written, produced and mixed by Bézier at his home studio in San Francisco between 2009 and 2013. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in jacket featuring a Bézier line drawing illustration by our in-house designer ELOISE LEIGH.  Each LP includes indivual postcards with drawings and liner notes. Hands In The Dark by Dark Day

Dark Day

Hands In The Dark
Dark Entries

***Dark Entries continues to work in reverse chronological order to re-issue DARK DAY’s debut single “Hands In the Dark.” Dark Day is the minimal electronics brainchild of ROBIN CRUTCHFIELD following his separation with no wave band DNA. For the first incarnation of Dark Day, Robin recruited NINA CANAL from The GYNECOLOGISTS and later UT on guitar and NANCY ARLEN from Mars on drums. They recorded two songs for a 7” single, released in 1979 on Charles Ball’s Lust/Unlust label. Off-kilter jerk-like guitar and energetic acrobatic tom-tom tumbling fuse with queasy lurching keyboards and “cold medicine” vocals. This single stepped away from no wave towards what was going on in the UK with The Normal, Robert Rental and Throbbing Gristle. After this single Dark Day would regroup with Robin on synthesizers and vocals, PHIL KLINE on guitar, BARRY FRIAR on drums and guest STEVEN BROWN of TUXEDOMOON on saxophone to record the Exterminating Angel album. In 1981, the song “Trapped” was released as a 12” EP backed with “The Exterminations (1 Thru 6).” For these six instrumental tracks, Robin went back into the studio with the master tapes, flipped them over and played them backwards. Altering track assignments, speed and reverb effects, he rode the faders in and out, creating short “exterminations” of the original songs. The result is Crutchfield’s favorite Dark Day release. All songs have been remastered from the original reel to reel tapes for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in...

***XEX were an all-synthesizer band from South River, New Jersey in the late 1970s. The band formed when a trio of high school misfits with funny names (WAW PIEROGI, THUMBALINA GUGIELMO and ALEX ZANDER) teamed up with some friends from Rutgers College. They released their debut album group: xex in 1980 which Dark Entries reissued in 2010. We were lucky to discover the master tapes of their unreleased second album xex:change in Waw's basement. xex:change takes a leap from where the band left off at the end of 1980. DAVID ANDERSON left the group making xex a quartet. With the help of producer ZIGGY RODBERG, xex further developed the aesthetic of the first album. The seven songs here are more complex and hypnotic than the synthpunk outbursts of group:xex. Their new synthesizers, a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and a Minimoog, evoke the high-tech utopia of Patrick Cowley and proto-techno of Afrika Bambaataa. Thumbalina's vocals have a detached, icy quality. Lyrics revolve around species-specific adaptations for copulation, robot love and the Jersey shore. They titled the album "xex:change", a multiple entendre that refers to the evolution of the group since its first album, group interaction in the creative process, and underlying sexual ambiguity. The group did not have the funds to release the album and it sat in obscurity for over 30 years. All songs have been remastered from the original reel to reel tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in jacket...

***BELABORIS was born in 1982 as the brainchild of Finnish producer KIMMO MIETTINEN. What Malcolm McLaren had been to The Sex Pistols, Miettinen was to Belaboris. He would put together an all-girl band that looked great in photographs but were backed by professional musicians. The first line-up was VILMA VAINKAINEN on main vocals, SISKO VAINKAINEN and RITA on back-up plus JAKE and MARI who did not sing at all. The backing band behind Belaboris was a local New Wave group called TYHJAT PATTERIT (which translates to Empty Batteries). The main songwriter was ESA IJAS (guitar, synthesizer) along with his bandmates ARI IJAS (bass) and MARTTI JALONEN (drums). Belaboris' debut 12" single "Kuolleet Peilit" was released in November 1982. It was followed by the "Odotus" 7" single in February 1983. The B-side was a cover of the Serge Gainsbourg song "Baby Pop". The band broke up and posthumously released a mini-LP called Olipa Kerran in 1984. WIthin a few months, an all new Belaboris line-up was put together. This version was a trio consisting of SAARA SOISALO (lead vocals), SALLAMAARI MUHONEN (backing vocals) and MINNA SOISALO ("moral support"). They released a 7" single "Rakkauden Jälkeen," an atmospheric electronic version of ‘60s Scandinavian pop hit by Carola. Shortly thereafter this line-up was quietly shelved and no further efforts were made. ***KITCHEN AND THE PLASTIC SPOONS formed at a basement rehearsal studio in Stockholm, Sweden during the spring of 1980. The band consisted of ANNE TAIVAN (vocals), HELENA LONGQVIST (synthesizer), IGGO KARLSSON (synthesizer), JACIE PAZDA (bass), and MATS WIGERDAL (drums). After a few concerts, Kitchen booked some free studio time and recorded their first single "Serve You!" in two days. Six months later PATRIK LINDVALL (guitar) joined the group and the band recorded their second single "Ice Cream To God" in early 1981. Kitchen's sound was getting darker and heavier and so was the mood in the band. Anne shortly left and was replaced by IODINE JUPITER on vocals. This new line up recorded a few songs for local compilations. The band broke up in November 1981 before recording their debut LP. Screams To God" collects Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons two 7" EPs, two compilation tracks as well as three demos from 1980 never before released on vinyl. Kitchen were part of the new DIY generation starting bands, making self- produced singles and rapidly breaking up. Dark Entries

***INFORMATICS were a post-punk electronic band from Melbourne, Australia formed in 1981. MICHAEL TRUDGEON, VALEK SADOVCHIKOFF, STEVE ADAM and RAMESH AYYAR met in the experimental sound studio while attending the same art school. PHILIP MCKELLAR later joined the band in 1983. Between 1981 and 1985, Informatics recorded numerous tracks, mainly in a garage, using a four-track tape machine and any electronic gear they could get their hands on. The band held a fascination for contemporary visual art and moving images and videos would accompany their live performances. The production elements in the videos reflected Informatics' philosophy on sound composition: the footage was entirely pirated from television ads, manipulated and then collaged to create new narratives that reinforced the music. Between January and November 1981 the band recorded their debut 4 song Dezinformatzia EP but it was not released until 1983 . The track "Proximity Switch", later renamed "Accidents in Paradise" became popular in parts of Europe and was re-released in 1985. Dance To A Dangerous Beat collects all 4 songs from the first EP, 2 songs from compilation appearances as well as 6 unreleased tracks on vinyl for the first time. Informatics early songs have a brittle, cold, disconnected feel made by a Roland SH-101, Korg MS-20 and a lot of processed guitar. The later songs utilize newer technology and ambient, synthesized melodies closer to their country mates Severed Heads. All songs have been transferred from the master tapes by Informatics and remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios...

***ALTRES are a band from Dundee, Scotland who originally formed in 1983. They were playing mostly instrumental, improvised electronic music at a time when very few bands, if any, were making this type of music in the UK. The band's influences included Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Philip Glass, Throbbing Gristle, Faust and many others, but their sound is clearly their own. After a few months of recording the band had a lot of material on tape, so they decided to release their first cassette Rise in 1984. Within that year the band managed to release 4 more cassettes: Live at the Tayside Bar, Archive One, Archive 2 and Angel Chords & Devil Chords. The band also appeared on the audio magazine, INKEY$ – No10 cassette. Dark Entries has chosen their favorite tracks from each of the cassettes for this special 7 song compilation album entitled Archives. DAN STIELLOW MORTAZAVI wrote the lyrics and sang while KENNETH NEUHAUS composed the music and played the instruments. They met in the Autumn of 1982 and recorded their sole album Alive Again over a weekend. It was self-released on cassette in 1983 and limited to 50 copies. Alive Again features 11 songs recorded in two short live takes directly onto one cassette. The Product employed a basic set up of Micromoog, Roland JX-3P and TR-606 Drumatix. Nine of the songs employ only these two synthesizers and drum machine while two songs feature a guest bassist. With these three instruments they crafted melodic, icy electronic rhythms with detached vocals. They were influenced by UK post-punk bands Second Layer, This Heat, Wire, Gary Numan, Fad Gadget and most noticeably The Cure's Pornography and Faith albums. Lyrics revolve around growing up in broken homes, alienation and romance. Each song has been carefully remastered from the original cassette master for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. ***Dark Entires is honored to reissue the long out of print debut album Elevator to Eden by LIVES OF ANGELS. Lives of Angels was the brainchild of GERALD O’CONNELL from London, England. In 1974 he worked at CBS studios mastering recordings from tape to disc. By 1977 he joined his first band MYSTERY PLANE, led by school mate Mark Harvey and later joined by his soon-to-be wife Catherine. Gerald branched off in 1980 forming Lives of Angels as an outlet for his own compositions. He recorded, produced and played all of the instruments on “Elevator to Eden” between 1981 and 1983, using a primitive set up of drum machines, one keyboard, guitar and a tape echo. Influenced by the Krautrock sounds of Neu! and Amon Duul II as well as US psychedelic rock, Lives of Angles crafted their own unique post-punk sound. Elevator to Eden was originally released in 1983 on cassette by Color Tape Records, the label started by Gary Ramon of Modern Art. ***“DEATH DOMAIN, a contemporary one-man band out of Baltimore, who might as well have been releasing work in Belgium circa 1983. The two tracks here fall between two somewhat obscure sounds—Kas Product (who you might recall doing the title track to the So Young But So Cold compilation of French coldwave from the '80s) and Leather Nun (in particular the Slow Death single recorded for Industrial Records way back when). Death Domain have the aggro rhythms of Kas Product cranked through the most primitive of drum machines, and the life-support system synths that Leather Nun provided for that one single. ***STRESS is the duo of ALAN RIDER and PHIL CLARKE from West Midlands, England formed in 1981.  Alan was editor of Coventry fanzine Adventures in Reality, and Phil was editor of Nuneaton fanzine  Damn Latin. Stress combined electronic rhythms and keyboards with bass guitar, vocals, percussion, and cut-up samples. They created catchy electronic pop songs that fused accessible & experimental elements with a pointed lyrical edge in the vein of Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode and Joy Division. Their first two albums were cassette releases on Alan’s own Adventures in Reality Recordings label. Help Comes Too Late in 1982 followed by Restraint in 1984.  In July 1985 Stress released The Big Wheel album and appeared on numerous cassette and vinyl compilations worldwide.
