***"Heat Wave" was demoed by E.D. SEDGWICK (aka JUSTIN MOYER) and MIKE ANDRE after ANTELOPE’s dissolution for a project that never coalesced, then sat idle on a hard drive for two years, beloved but homeless. When E.D. Sedgwick went into the studio last November after a European tour, the band decided to record a new version, offer it to friends and family to remix, and give it back to the people as a white-label 12" to be played at 45 r.p.m. The final product features the single plus remixes by GREG SAUNIER of DEERHOOF, TRIOBELISK (SHELBY CINCA of FRODUS and THE CASSETTES), and Philadelphia’s PINK SKULL. It is being released on Mud Memory and Dischord Records. The 11-track MP3 download, which is included free with the vinyl, features additional remixes by GOLD CORNER (Mike Andre of Antelope), DAVIS WHITE, LENORABLE, JOHN MOON (CORNEL WEST THEORY) and THIRD CHANNEL (JASON HUTTO of AQUARIUM).

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork. From their inception in 1988 until their hiatus in 2006, the LUNGFISH music band released 11 full-length albums and played concerts across the United States and in Europe. The band is renowned for intense creative productivity, releasing albums annually from the years 1992–2000. But what is not generally known is that volumes of Lungfish material never saw the light of day. The 1999 A.C.R. session offers a rare glimpse into some of this elusive material and by extension, into the Lungfish creative process. These 10-songs were recorded and mixed by CRAIG BOWEN at Baltimore’s A.C.R. Studios but never released. After the session the band decided to continue writing new songs—ultimately recording at Inner Ear Studios what became Necrophones (2000). Six of these songs were re-recorded and released on Necrophones, while four others remained unreleased, until now.

***THE EVENS are a band from Washington, D.C. IAN MACKAYE plays baritone guitar and AMY FARINA plays drums. They both sing. Their self-titled debut album was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in the summer of 2004 and released in March 2005. Get Evens, the band's second full-length, was entirely self-recorded in the basement of the Dischord House in the summer of 2006. The Evens have toured in the U.S., Europe, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, and Eastern Canada. In 2008 The Evens took a break as Ian and Amy took time to tend to family matters and a new arrival. In 2011 the band once again began rehearsing regularly and in August entered Inner Ear Studios with DON ZIENTARA to record two tracks that will be released on a single in November 2011. The band plans to record a full-length in 2012 and will begin playing regular dates as well.

***PLEASE CHECK STOCK!!! OFFICE OF FUTURE PLANS was never supposed to get any further than J. ROBBINS’ hard drive. The songs began as cathartic exercises, cooked up in the singer/guitarist’s spare time, with no agenda other than to stay sane by continuing to make music after a lifetime playing and traveling the world in D.C.-based punk-influenced bands (JAWBOX, BURNING AIRLINES). The band was hoodwinked into forming when Chicago punk luminaries, The Bomb, invited Robbins to open their Baltimore show in Fall 2009. Cellist/guitarist GORDON WITHERS (BELLS, PAUSES), bassist/multi-instrumentalist BROOKS HARLAN (AVEC), and drummer DARREN ZENTEK (OSWEGO, KEROSENE 454) were all enlisted for what was supposed to be a one-time, just-for-fun gig. And it was fun. So much so that the band just kept writing and arranging at Robbins' Baltimore recording studio, The Magpie Cage, and committing songs to tape as they came to fruition. The result is a richly textured record, by turns bombastic (“The Beautiful Barricades”), tuneful (“Your Several Selves”) and, sometimes, tastefully psychedelic (“Salamander”). Where Robbins’ previous groups were frequently lean and economical, OFP draws from a broad instrumental palate—sweetening knotty guitar riffs with cello and keyboard melodies. The band name is a nod to Terry Gilliam's black comedy Brazil and Dick Cheney's Office of Special Plans, the government committee whose brief was to provide justification for the invasion of Iraq. The theory being: The blandest and most bureaucratic designations hide the most profound evil. In this sense, if only in nomenclature, OFP are kind of a bizarro...

Sessions 1981-1983 by Void

Void

Sessions 1981-1983
Dischord

***New blue vinyl pressing!!! Received a 7.3 rating from Pitchfork. Thirty miles north of Washington, there is a town in Maryland called Columbia, one of the first planned-communities built in the US, and in retrospect, the perfect birthplace for a band as completely chaotic as Void. Their DC debut was in 1980 at the first Wilson Center show, a marathon fifteen-band affair largely organized by the Bad Brains. When Void started a song it was as if each member was playing his own parts as fast as humanly possible, but not necessarily together. Unlike most bands, whose performances become predictable, Void shows became increasingly discombobulated and ever more fraught with disaster. The live chaos remained even as they started to embrace a metal image and sound towards the end of their three-year existence. While to some it may have seemed like complete cacophony, to those in the know it was music on a higher level. While organizing their archive, Dischord came across the four-track of Void’s first recording session. It was done with Steve Carr at Hit and Run Studios in November ’81 and never officially released. The tape was remixed by Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear earlier this year. These embryonic versions of what would become Void classics as well as songs that didn’t make the cut prove just how driven this band was to capture their own sound. Sessions 1981-83 features the entire Hit and Run session along with the first Inner Ear demo (including the Flex Your...

Subject To Change Plus First Demo by Faith

Faith

Subject To Change Plus First Demo
Dischord

***The fall of 1981 found the Washington, DC punk scene in one of the first of many fallow periods when a number of active bands broke up at the same time. SOA, Minor Threat, Red C and The Untouchables had all split, and a number of the musicians reorganized. MIKE HAMPTON and IVOR HANSEN from SOA formed a new band with ALEC MACKAYE of THE UNTOUCHABLES singing and another Wilson High School kid, CHRIS BALD, on bass. They called themselves THE FAITH and played their first show at H.B. Woodlawn High School in November ’81. At the end of 1982, EDDIE JANNEY (also a former member of The Untouchables) joined Faith as a second guitarist and six months later they recorded the Subject to Change 12-inch EP. Though clocking in at less than 14 minutes, this record was hugely important, not only to the people in DC but to others around the country and the world that were interested in the music emerging from the nation’s capitol. On Subject to Change, Faith introduced a layered, melodic approach that would blossom fully in later Faith-related bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. Unfortunately, by the time anybody heard Subject to Change, the band was no more. Interpersonal strife proved too much and they played their last show in August 1983. The record was released posthumously four months later. While Minor Threat is often held up as the preeminent DC band of the early years, for many of the locals it was...

***In the spring of 1986 Dischord founders IAN MACKAYE and JEFF NELSON (both formerly of MINOR THREAT) went to England to visit, and were invited by Southern Records founder JOHN LODER to do some recording while they were there. Southern was operated out of a row house in a neighborhood called Wood Green, and John had a 24-track studio set up in the garage. They recorded four songs, including "Me and You," something that the two had been playing together in the basement for many years, and "We All Fall Down," which was written by Ian for EMBRACE, but had been passed on by the band. Having had such a good time recording and hanging out in London, Ian and Jeff decided to release a single to mark the occasion. The name was chosen since it was recorded over Easter weekend. That summer they tried forming a new band called EGG HUNT with ex-members of GRAY MATTER, but it wasn't meant to be. The Southern session would turn out to be the last time the two would record music together. This single is being re-pressed for the first time in over 10 years (on colored vinyl).

Love Gets Lovelier Every Day by Edie Sedgwick

Edie Sedgwick

Love Gets Lovelier Every Day
Dischord

***Through 12 years, three record labels, over a dozen band members, one epilepsy diagnosis, and one filthy dress. E.D. SEDGWICK has seen it all. It wasn't pretty. "'Love Gets Lovelier Every Day' is the 'Smile' of Washington, D.C. drag-punk rock," says Sedgwick, aka JUSTIN MOYER, the EL GUAPO/SUPERSYSTEM bassist who started performing under his nom de plume in 1999. "Everything conspired against this record. A collapsing record industry. Bandmates moving out of town. A couple of grand-mal seizures. Getting evicted from my studio, which was torn down by the city to build—wait for it—another studio. My decision to stop performing in a dress. The discovery of a 13th astrological sign, which means I'm no longer a Pisces, but an Aries (a fucking Aries!). The only thing 'Love Gets Lovelier Every Day' has going for it is really good songs, and a really good band to play them." Recorded in 2009 but caught up in record label, personnel, and personal drama until now, "LGLED" is a poignant memoir of a bad season—and, with a long slate of featured performers, a departure for an reformed electroclash artist who used to make records alone in his bedroom. Dance-y ragers like "Everybody Wants Some" (featuring CHAD MOLTER and MARK CISNEROS of MEDICATIONS on, respectively, bass and sax) appear alongside "He Composed Lines That Frighten Stanzas," a Pixies-ish rocker co-written by ex-Supersystem guitarist RAFAEL COHEN. And there is the titular, 12-plus minute pseudo-psychedelic medley equally inspired by John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and the B-side...

***BACK IN PRINT!!! THE TEEN IDLES (NATHAN STEJCEK, GEORDIE GRINDLE, IAN MAKAYE and JEFF NELSON) founded Dischord Records in 1980 with the release of the "Minor Disturbance" 8-song 7-inch (Dischord #1), so it seemed appropriate that Dischord celebrated its 100th release in 1996 with a second single from the band 16 years later. This record consists of songs taken from practice tapes and early demos recorded in late 1979 to mid-1980. The music on this record was released not because we feel the songs are particularly amazing or necessary, rather it's because we think they are funny and cool, and because they represent us as we were: a bunch of high school punk rockers. The Teen Idles certainly didn't intend to start a label, only to put out a record, but it was a decision that led to at least 30 years of new bands and releases and the documentation of a community here in Washington DC.

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received an 8.1 rating from Pitchfork. THE LUNGFISH BAND, from Baltimore, Maryland, has been performing and releasing albums on the Dischord Records label for more than 20 years. The Unanimous Hour was the band’s 8th full-length album, appropriately released at the begining of the new millenium, June 1999. For many The Unanimous Hour represents the band at its peak, incorporating DANIEL HIGGS’ wild lyrical imgery with the band’s signature focus and repitition and spining them to new levels of tension and release. Lungfish is now, as it often has been, quasi if not entirely defunct. However, since the release of the band’s last album in 2005, Feral Hymns, singer Daniel Higgs (who is also an accomplished visual artist) has embarked on a burgeoning solo career, releasing albums on Northern Liberties, Thrill Jocky and Holy Mountain and showing his artwork both in the States and The United Kingdom. ASA OSBORNE is currently recording and performing solo material under the name, THE ZOMES. The Unanimous Hour (which has been out of print for years) is being reissued on CD and LP, both remastered from original tapes. LP features a free download.

Rites Of Spring

All Through A Life
Dischord

***BACK IN STOCK!!! 1984 was a time of redefinition within the punk scene in Washington, DC and RITES OF SPRING more than led the charge. Rites of Spring not only challenged the macho posturing that had become so prevalent, but more importantly they defied musical and stylistic rule. The people that followed the band made it a point to try to never miss a gig, as ROS seemed to approach every show as if it was their last. The results could be explosive, often resulting in the destruction of their equipment, and this may well be one reason that they ended up playing only about 15 shows. It was the boldness of this band that really contributed to the swell of energy, often referred to as "Revolution Summer," that swept over the DC scene in 1985. In their brief existence Rites of Spring released one full-length, End on End, and a 7-inch, All Through A Life, both on Dischord Records. The End on End album has remained in print on vinyl and CD over the years, but the All Through A Life 7-inch fell out of print years ago.

Joe has released two albums on Dischord Records, There to Here in 2006 and Nothing is Underrated in 2007, and has toured extensively in the USA, Europe, Brazil, Japan and beyond. Joe’s albums and his tours have until recently featured a large cast of collaborators including his Fugazi mates, members of Capillary Action, Zu, Melvins, and others. On Joe’s newest album, Why Should I Get Used to It, he has settled on a more permanent line-up featuring his current touring mates, guitarist ELISA ABELA and drummer EMANUELE TOMASI. ***After only three months of playing shows, DAG NASTY went into Inner Ear Studios with IAN MACKAYE. Dag With Shawn was recorded on Halloween Day 1985 and features the original line-up of the band with SHAWN BROWN on vocals. Initially songs from this session were to be released as a four-song 7-inch on Dischord, but shortly after the recording Shawn left Dag Nasty and the tape was shelved. In early 1986 the band re-recorded the entire album with new vocalist DAVE SMALLEY and released it as Can I Say. Shawn went on to form the much loved SWIZ and Dag Nasty went through several more line-up changes over the years, including another vocal switch when Dave Smalley was replaced by PETER CORTNER. This original session has only been previously available as partial out-takes and unauthorized bootlegs and, until now, has never been released in its complete form. Complete Session Nov. '81 by Artificial Peace

Artificial Peace

Complete Session Nov. '81
Dischord

***“ARTIFICIAL PEACE lasted barely a year, but in that short time managed to become a leading band in the early DC hardcorepunk scene. PETE MURRAY had played in the short-lived RED C while MIKE MANOS, ROB MOSS and STEVE POLCARI were in a band called ASSAULT & BATTERY. Towards the end of 1981 they formed A.P. and began playing around town. They were tight, fast, and aggressive, prerequisites for most of the DC bands of the time, but also had a unique sound and surprisingly catchy songs. I loved the band and offered to record them at Inner Ear Studios. In November 1981 the studio was still a 4-track in the basement of DON ZIENTARA’s family house. The ‘live’ room was actually his children’s playroom, and the mixing desk and tape machine were set up next to the furnace in what could be described as spacious closet. A.P. knocked out their 17 songs in almost no time. I think we recorded, mixed, and sequenced the tape in two or three days and were very happy with the results. There may have been some discussion about putting a few of these songs on a 7” EP, but at that time all of the label’s resources had been put into releasing Flex Your Head, our first full-length album. FYH was a compilation documenting the DC punk scene and since A.P were one of the great young bands coming up at that time, we included three songs from their session. There never was...

Boycott Stabb Complete Session

***“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with GOVERNMENT ISSUE to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the...

These cheap imitators can't comprehend that the Nation of Ulysses derived their awesome power from their unswerving commitment to secession and havoc wreaking, and not to the banal and unimportant pursuit of fame and wealth. The N.O.U. is probably the most important development to beset music since electrification, as they were the first to articulate intent through written manifestos and stage hystrionics, refuting rock'n'roll's traditional policy of posturing rebelliously while aping parent culture values. ***DEVIN OCAMPO and CHAD MOLTER have been musical partners, swapping instruments and bands, since their high school days in Los Angeles. Both eventually migrated east to Washington, DC where they formed the highly influential FARAQUET in the late 1990s and were again reunited when they formed MEDICATIONS in 2003. The recording of the new Medications album, Completely Removed, documents a new phase for the band with Chad and Devin covering all the writing and most of the instrumental duties following the departure of drummer Andrew Becker. Happily both are accomplished multi-instrumantalists and are joined live and in the studio by longtime friend and musical swingman MARK CISNEROS to flesh out the arrangements. Not surprisingly Completely Removed represents a bit of a departure from the band's signature off kilter rockers. This is not to say they have lost their edge. In fact, the new material dives headlong into new musical territory with thrilling results. Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork.

Flex Your Head
Dischord

***REISSUED!!! Flex Your Head was first released in January 1982 and was the first full-length album released by Dischord Records. The compilation features thirty-two songs by 11 DC area bands and went a long way towards “putting DC on the map” as one of the era’s great punk scenes. This new edition, which has been re-cut features a cover image of the DC Flag stars and bars (on a red field), an image so associated with DC punk that many mistake it for a made-up symbol for straight edge. This cover image was also used (on a black field) for an edition of the album briefly pressed in conjunction with Alternative Tentacles in the ‘80s. Tracks from MINOR THREAT, TEEN IDLES, SOA, G.I., YOUTH BRIGADE, VOID, IRON CROSS, ARTIFICIAL PEACE, and more. Includes a free MP3 download coupon,

Take It Back by Gray Matter

Gray Matter

Take It Back
Dischord

***REISSUED!!! GRAY MATTER officially formed in the summer of 1983 but GEOFF TURNER, MARK HAGGERTY and DANTE FERRANDO had been playing in bands since their early middle school days. By early 1983, Dante and Mark were playing in IRON CROSS, but when when the band's image began to reflect it's supporters more than the members themselves, Dante quit. Soon after Mark also left and the two reunited with Geoff and Iron Cross roadie STEVE NILES and started playing shows around Washington, DC as Gray Matter. The band's first album, Food For Thought was originally released on R&B records in 1985 while the members were still in High School. Food For Thought was the name of Dante’s father’s restaurant (and Gray Matter’s rehersal space) and was soon to host many of the shows by Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, Embrace, etc. that gave rise to DC’s Revolution Summer in 1985. The Take It Back EP, released in September 1986, was recorded in the immediate afterglow of Revolution Summer and features that era’s raw melodic energy contained only by Gray Matter’s impeccable song craft. Pressed on colored vinyl. Includes a free download.

***THE AQUARIUM is a duo featuring JASON HUTTO on keyboards and vocals and LAURA HARRIS on drums. Jason's layering of overdriven electric piano and keyboards creates surprising depth and ample texture for Laura's rollicking back-beats. The Aquarium only plays a handful of shows each year yet have attracted a dedicated following with their hypnotizing instrumentals and frantic vocal compositions. In addition to performing with The Aquarium, Laura also plays drums with BENJY FERREE (Domino Records). Jason has toured with Edie Sedgwick, and played guitar in Motor Cycle Wars. In 2006 Dischord released the band's self-titled debut full-length. The Aquarium’s newest release is a two-song 7-inch, mixed by BRENDAN CANTY (Fugazi) and produced by Benjy Ferree.

***MARGINAL MAN was formed in 1983 after the break-up of ARTIFICAL PEACE, a seminal DC hardcore punk band. Featuring former AP members STEVE POLCARI, PETE MURRAY and MIKE MANOS, and joined with KENNY INOUYE and ANDRE LEE, Marginal Man released one EP (Identity), and two LPs (Double Image and Marginal Man), along with a couple of appearances on compilations (Alive and Kicking, and State of the Union). During the band's five and a half year existence they toured North America twice, toured extensively up and down the East Coast, and played numerous shows in the DC area, culminating in a farewell show on March 24, 1988 with two sold out sets at the 930 Club. Identity was recorded in 1983 by IAN MACKAYE and DON ZIENTARA at Inner Ear Studios and was originally released as a 12-inch EP in 1984. Although Identity was reissued on CD in 1997 the vinyl has been out of print for many years. In 2009 Dischord sent the tapes to be remastered at Chicago Mastering Service and have now reissued the LP along with an MP3 download.

Includes a free download coupon.
