Bite The Hand That Feeds by Upchuck

Upchuck

Bite The Hand That Feeds
Famous Class

***Channeling the speed of youth and the heaviness of a fleshy, lived life in equal proportion, Upchuck’s second LP, Bite the Hand That Feeds, is a Trojan Horse par excellence, craftily smuggling in waves of sentimental emotion and clever pop songwriting under a veil of pulsing rhythms and scorching riffs. What binds Upchuck together is a purity of intention, an organic loyalty to a thick knot of uncalculated friendships, struggles, and desires. These are songs about the joy of continuing to live, songs that find each other in the rush of a crushing reality, propelling the listener onward towards a collective release, however brief it may last. Themes of surviving through the night, youth-blinded love, cheap champagne soaked back-alley parties, and chaotic street protests are subsumed under a single unifying thread: the needs we have for one another, our shared hunger for connection. In a world saturated with arbitrary rules and paper-thin moralism, Upchuck offer freedom through sensation, a type of unserious transcendence found through the swirl of bodies melting into one another in the passion of dance. With Bite the Hand That Feeds, Upchuck isn’t trying to tell anyone how to live. Rather, they are simply trying to find a way to make life more worth living for both themselves and their friends—if the music compels you to move, you might as well consider yourself their friend too. Shortly after the release of their debut album Sense Yourself, Upchuck absconded to Southern California to record Bite the Hand That...

***BSCBR is a group of Black Sabbath lovers hailing from New York City. The group consists of Brad Truax (Interpol), Mick Barr (Ocrilim, Krallice), Greg Fox (Liturgy, Ex Eye), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors, Deradoorian). After a music residency in Berlin where Zinner, Deradoorian, and Fox met up, the first formation of the band was created. Zinner had the idea of bringing the music to NYC (when Truax and Barr joined) where the band received immediate attention and sold out their first concert. It was surprising for everyone, but they just kept on playing, and the people kept on showing up. It's been one of their favorite bands to play in ever. The love of Sabbath has brought so much joy to this group and there's no greater feeling than spreading that joy to fellow fans. (STREET DATE - 10/28/2022)

Sense Yourself by Upchuck

Upchuck

Sense Yourself
Famous Class

Upchuck is a five piece band from Atlanta, formed from connections made in skateboarding, construction, and teenage delinquency. The band is lead guitarist Mikey, Rhythm guitarist Hoff, bassist Armando, drummer Chris, and vocalist KT – who combined are inventively raucous and revolutionary. Upchuck shakes the minds and bodies of those seeking a release. With lyricism to prove her intentions, songwriter KT screams of haunting tales of discrimination, ignorance, and life in a doomed generation. Only the wise and relentless will thrive in a revolutionized and radical world, and upchuck is sternly feeding the fuel for a new gen. Sense Yourself is teeming with the sounds of swaggering danger. Songs bearing titles such as “Boss Up,” “In Your Mind,” and “Our Skin” come out of the gate strong, complete with searing energy courtesy of guitarists Mikey and Hoff. Bass player Armando and drummer Chris’ rhythms are driven by a bounding sense of urgency and contempt. The group attacks creative post-punk and indie rock with a compelling blend of high-energy blasts and ’90s alt rock inflections, channeled through a haze of distortion. "Perdido," sung in Spanish by drummer Chris, builds energy around the phrase: “Hago lo que quiero” — I do what I want. With "In Your Mind," the group explores the realities of reaping what you sow. But the album’s undisputed jam, "Facecard," finds KT taking on the superficiality of modern America: “The trifling yuppie fuck, comes out beyond the cut to try and low ball, low ball,” KT sings. Operating...

Portland band Floating Room has been saddled with a multitude of stuffy genre descriptors over the years—shoegaze, art pop, slowcore, baroque pop. But the band’s latest release, Shima, makes one thing clear: this is a rock band. Led by multidisciplinary Uchinanchu American artist and DIY veteran Maya Stoner, Floating Room has featured a revolving cast of musicians since its inception. Their somnolent debut release, 2016’s Sunless, was recorded mostly solo and entirely in Stoner’s bedroom, while the full-length followup, 2018’s False Baptism, captured a louder, more energetic incarnation of the band and was recorded at the legendary Anacortes studio, The Unknown. Shima arrives on the heels of last year’s Tired and True EP, which saw Stoner experiment with symphonic instrumentation and lush, soft-rock textures. Shima, by contrast, is a rollicking punk record that whips by at warp speed, highlighting Stoner’s emo and riot grrrl roots; it’s Tired and True’s photo negative. Opening track “I’ll See You Around” is an unmistakable pop-rock hit that sounds like it could have been written by Adam Shclesinger for the Josie and the Pussycats reboot; “Shimanchu” is both a paean to Stoner’s Uchinanchu heritage and a retort to the condescension she faces daily as an Asian American woman; “Firetruck” is a love song disguised as a ‘60s pop pastiche, and “I Wrote This Song For You” is a message to an inner child disguised as a love song. Shima weds the heavier leanings of Stoner’s earliest work—her first popular Portland band was hardcore three-piece Teeath,...

***This EP was a personal feat in light of the existential malaise we have been wading through. The songs are surreal and honest. My take on current reality inevitably takes a bit of a nose dive in to spiraling repetition. This isn't new to me as I am by nature an over thinker. I would take the instrumentals on hikes to sort out the lyrics. A blend of physical and mental exhaustion ultimately let me lower the guard. I found the concept of Soft Crime could be the slight of hand that takes place in front of our eyes ... or the small things we let ourselves get away with; either way Soft Crime goes down every day. The Blood Machine turns, and we sacrifice ground to take steps. It's important to remember that by the burning light of the dumpster fire, we can still find the true beauty of our neighbors. We're in it together until the very end. Whether that is tomorrow or was yesterday. (STREET DATE - 10/15/2021)

Singles Club (Remastered)

***"It’s been a few weeks now since Zoë Brecher released Singles Club (Remastered), her debut album as HUSHPUPPY and honestly we’re still recovering. The album completely bowled us over, and it was a mere matter of hours after the 3rd consecutive listen that we started talking with Zoë about vinyl. Favors have been called in, test presses are approved and today we are so excited to announce the vinyl release of Singles Club (Remastered), which will be out on Famous Class Records fall. Singles Club (Remastered) is a collection of shimmering meditations on romance and relationships. The album was written and recorded by the New York City-based Zoë Brecher, more widely known as a versatile percussionist in several NYC-based projects. Outside of HUSHPUPPY, Brecher is also the drummer of Sad13, Sammus, Julian Lamadrid, Kalbells, and Somantha Urbani, and was a touring drummer for Oberhofer, King Tuff, and SASAMI. Singles Club (Remastered) is filled with heartfelt and introspective love songs, with addictive riffs and sweet, sometimes raspy, vocal styling’s. She concedes her lyrics reflect her passionate and playful personality. As she describes the tracks, 'The songs are short and sweet, and mostly about love, which for me is lesbian love. But I wanted them to be relatable to anyone.' The remastered version provides a fresh, polished sheen that brings HUSHPUPPY’s lofi sound to a stronger and clearer place. 'With my music, I want to make people feel good,' she says, 'and I want them to know they are not alone when...

***FUTURE ISLANDS bassist WILLIAM CASHION collects postcards. Years in one of the country’s hardest-touring bands often find him rushing from destination to destination without time to take a deep breath, let alone be present in each locale’s sights and sounds. But bringing home postcards helps coalesce ephemeral moments into souvenirs he can return to and access again. In crafting his first solo record, Cashion experimented in the studio, driven by a potentially infinite riddle: “what is the sound of a song that has no beginning and no end?” Exploring music’s unique ability to distort our sense of the passage of time—or even take us outside it—Cashion welcomed elements of repetition and chance into his process. The sessions were also highly informed by meditation, a new regular practice Cashion introduced to his daily routine during this period. The resulting album builds upon the most intriguing results of months of exploratory writing sessions. Acclaimed UK designer CHRIS BIGG helped visualize the world of Postcard Music, and Cashion’s wife, visual artist ELENA JOHNSTON contributed a painting to the album's inner sleeve. Cashion and Johnston have previously worked together on a series of collaborative paintings and brightly colored, curved neon light sculptures. During downtime between projects, he retreats to the beaches of North Carolina near where Future Islands formed. The eleven songs here were recorded in sessions in the Outer Banks, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and Cashion’s current hometown Baltimore.

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork. “Rarely when formulating combinations of musicians you would like to hear play together do you get to actually hear it. If Brian Chippendale and Ty Segall made a record, would you want to hear it? If the answer is yes, read on. If the answer is no, it’s too bad you ended up canned, suspended in syrup with nothing but other peaches to keep you company. “Ty’s 2019 album First Taste and the new Lighting Bolt album Sonic Citadel are easily some of the best material either entity has ever released so if these two happened to find themselves in the same recording studio, a fan just might entertain elevated expectation levels. In fact, some might actually show signs of enthusiasm, even excitement at the fact that from July 5th -13th 2018, in the air-conditioning free environs of Ty’s home studio, the duo, eventually calling themselves Wasted Shirt, wrecked the joint as thoroughly as you hoped they would. “Prepare To Be Stoked Dept.: The album is exploding euphoria from start to finish. A morphing day-glo rainbow that will bring a smile to your face like if you were on your way to Washington DC for the Million Puppy March. Upon first spin, all boxes are checked and any previously held doubts are completely obliterated. The more you play it, the better it kabongs you upside your head. Hectic doesn’t even begin to describe it. Brian and Ty, two mere particles in the...

Those Who No by Civic

Those Who No

***"Shortly after their debut, Melbourne's CIVIC return with their sophomore EP Those Who No—a fatalistic slab of power pop for the modern set. Recorded on a stint in Geelong, with BILLY GARDNER once again at the helm, Those Who No acts as a counter point to the gutter rock classicism and urban decay romantics of ‘New Vietnam,' and shifts it’s focus towards genre experimentation, bleaker insular realities and modern personal warfare. Over four tracks, JIM MCCULLOUGH, LEWIS HODGSON, DARCY GRIGG, ROLAND HLAVAKA and DAVID FORCIER, dance on the knife’s edge of mythology versus the mundane—an against all odds desperation that flirts with the anthemic yet only stokes the flames. Mid 70s glam and rock n roll tropes are pummeled beyond recognition referencing the past but predominantly pointing to the future. There are forces at work here and Civic aren’t a band merely content to play to their strengths - they are a true sum of their parts who get their kicks testing their limitations."—Ben Hepworth

Plays The Music of The Shining

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Received a 7.1 rating from Pitchfork. Stanley Kubrick has a troubled past with DEERHOOF. An argument over whether Eyes Wide Shut was good almost broke up the band in 1999 and again in 2003. When Famous Class suggested a 7" of music from The Shining, the band waffled for three years about whether they thought they could do it justice. But once a Halloween release date was proposed, Deerhoof couldn't resist. They got the score to Bartok's "Music For Strings, Percussion and Celesta" out of the library, and transcribed one of the 20s songs straight from the closing credits. Music that in the movie echoed from some ghostly, gilded past takes on a more urgent character in Deerhoof's versions, as if to underscore that the horrors of white supremacy, oligarchy, and domestic abuse are alive and well in 2018 America.

***"Standing around guzzling beers at a show at the long defunct Gibson House in the early 2000’s, Brian Foss the booker, mentioned an upcoming show w/ the Evaporators to LARS, JED & I. Quickly surveying the scene & seeing we had a 3 piece at hand & could grab the show, somebody said 'Can we play that? Yeah, umm… we’ve got a new band, it’s sounding pretty good, it’s called ummm… we’ll get back to you with the name.' A band was born. Jed & I might’ve been playing in the INTELLIGENCE then. Lars & I might’ve been playing in DIPERS then. MIN was in the Intelligence w/ us for a time & the A FRAMES w/ Lars. MIKE from DOUBLE FUDGE played in Intelligence, Welcome and later UNNATURAL HELPERS with me. It’s difficult to peel apart all of the bands & be sure which shows you saw, which shows you played, who might’ve playing with who at that time. We were all psyched to be playing music. Energy was high, down time was unacceptable. Forward we moved. We played the show w/ the Evaporators, which was a hoot & then played a party at Jed’s house in Ballard. I remember Jed stole a pool from Fred Meyer for that one. That was it. I don’t really remember why. We guzzled beers & formed bands w/ others that were around? I dig the brevity. I like how tidy it was. We probably never argued or hated that idiots stupid story...

Poetics Of Space / Like The Fly by Walter

Walter

Poetics Of Space / Like The Fly
Famous Class

***Staying true to the interwoven nature of the current Los Angeles music scene, WALTER is a group sewn together from different projects (MEATBODIES, SADGIRL, DUCKTAILS) bent on staking its own claim on the music that their city is so well known for. Comprised of PATRICK NOLAN, MISHA LINDES and ROSS CHAIT, the trio utilizes the stripped down format of guitar/bass/drums to blend Southern California heaviness with quieter, more subtle moments. Pretending like the guitar solo never went out of style in the first place, Walter serves up its own unique flavor of unabashed, self-deprecating smart rock.

Running Out of Red by Zig Zags

Zig Zags

Running Out of Red
Famous Class

***NOW AVAILABLE ON CASSETTE!!! Los Angeles-based bonehead savants Zig Zags are no-nonsense ’80s style thrash with a magpie eye for deep-fried pop culture detritus. These guys give so few fucks while they are out ripping faces that it’s tough to say much about them that hasn’t been said before—they shred so that we may raise beers in non-ironic salute to their Voivod worship, to a world in which young heshers subscribe to Heavy Metal and practice early Slayer solos while watching daytime TV, to waking and baking as you watch the world burn. Running Out of Red is the soundtrack to getting high and driving around in your shitty car in your small town, occasionally getting laid…occasionally getting laid out at the local liquor store by an older dude. Gang vocals: check. 1-2 pit beat: on lock. Shredder solid state guitar heroics: ripping, and so should you, the bong is packed and I think there’s still pizza in the fridge. I can smell your pants from here, dude. (STREET DATE - 5/20/2016)

***“I always wanted to have a band that would just come up with real pop songs on the spot,” explains A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS front man OLIVER ACKERMAN. “This is that minus the pop and plus the fucked up rock and roll. This is our raw, uncut, thought-of-on-the-spot A Place To Bury Strangers. The inspiration is you. You have inspired us to kick you in the ass and make you dance or at least flail your arms around until you puke. These five? tracks were created in five? different locations throughout the world in the middle of the crowd with people breathing down our necks and stepping on our feet. Sometimes someone would grab the microphone away and bark like a chicken and sometimes grab our collective ass. Here is the soul squeezed from the past years of the band’s existence on this platter.” One-time pressing packaged in two-color screen-printed jackets. (STREET DATE - 4/08/2016)

***Through the toxic foliage of the American slicked back hairdo there emerges the essence of the underground weirdo. Dance! Kiss! Lick! Love! SPIT! TOUCH ME BABY! IM REAL! Suggestions on the highway spiders up the pillar. Kill the fake, MOVE what's inside you. MOVE what you got! MOVE YOUR "MEATBODY!" KEVIN BOOG, CHAD UBOVICH, PATRICK NOLAN, sometimes BOOG CHAD PAT, usually THE MEATBODIES, also known as MEATBODIES. What was ONCE a solo affair for Mr. Chad has now turned into 3! conjoining hands, conjoining rhythms. GETTING UP FOR THE TONGUES. Clapping in the distance. Make yourself a MEATBODY. Hear the noise you weren't meant to hear 'til the end of the song. (STREET DATE - 3/18/2016)

***MIKE POLIZZE, recording as PURLING HISS, has a fuzz-glazed output full of poppy pearls. On the Something EP, Polizze returns to the original Purling Hiss approach, a vibe harking back to Lounge Lizards and Public Service Announcement. He has collected here four self-recorded tracks made at his home in Philadelphia on which he tackles all instrumentation, giving you a brief peek inside the power pop process. Three tracks along with a bonus cut on the download.

***Los Angeles scuzz punks ZIG ZAGS are back in action! Famous Class Records releases 4 songs bursting with more metal, punk, hardcore, pop and 7 Seconds covers, than your human mind can handle. Beware of Cronenberg-style head explosions! Opening track, “Gröth” kicks things off with fuzzed-out bass over hardcore riffing. Next comes “Slime” which sounds like early Metallica fighting off a gang of Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers! The B-side finds Zig Zags veering into classic pop/punk territory with the irresistible, “Sunken City,” an ode to San Pedro and their heroes in The Minutemen. And finally—the worship culminates in a cover of the 7 Seconds track “We’re Gonna Fight”—this one recorded alive and on the airwaves. So turn up the stereo… and flip the fuck out! (STREET DATE 8/11/2015) Zig Zags started in a room lit by a single green light, going on to record a song with Iggy Pop and an album with Ty Segall, from playing house parties for pizza to staring off the stage at the Fillmore West. Theirs is the nightmare of the insane and the all-too-normal, the Bermuda Triangle between sci-fi and lo-fi and no-budget, the Twilight Zone twist ending where it turns out everyone ELSE was an alien the whole time. When Cliff Burton wore that Misfits shirt? Zig Zags. When the Emergency Broadcast System interrupts that John Carpenter movie? Zig Zags. When a soggy pile of Thrasher mags and Jack Kirby comics spill out of a dumpster behind the Sunday School? Zig Zags. When...
