Originally released in 1997 (on the same day as Radiohead's OK Computer), Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space is the third album from JASON PIERCE’s post-SPACEMEN 3 project and his most brilliant work to date. ***Long before Patrick Paige II (The Internet), knew how to rip bass, he knew he wanted to fly. “Since I was little I was obsessed with aviation,” he recalls. “I wanted to be in the airforce until I got older and more conscious—no, I don’t wanna drop bombs on people for no fucking reason. But flying was an obsession that started young.” It’s a fixation that permeates his forthcoming sophomore album If I Fail Are We Still Cool, a collection of tenacious affirmations stitched together with in-flight interludes and an unshakable sense of ascension. What initially began as the makings of an EP quickly amassed into something more like a revelation once he wrote the hook-heavy “So They Say.” “I never trusted myself to write hooks, but once I wrote that, it was like, ‘oh shit, I can do this. I’m done pretending like I can’t.’” Written on the road and recorded in Hollywood at Chalice Recording Studios with the help of friends Chris Bosmith, Sean Matsukawa and Kameron Allen, the album provided Paige with a canvas to define himself. “I wanna stand for something,” he declares on “Who Am I.” “I wanna do it for the kids who got kicked out of class, beating on tables with the pens, they had no drum pads.” These moments of freeform introspection entwine with effortless grooves, such as on “Whisper” featuring Steve Lacy, Allen Love, and Durand Bernar. Elsewhere on the album, he links with Syd, Westside McFly, Saba, Ohana Bam, and...

***Wavves new album Hideaway marks their return to Fat Possum Records. Across its brief but impactful nine tracks, the album, produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, is about what happens when you get old enough to take stock of the world around you and realize that no one is going to save you but yourself, and even that might be a tall order. “It’s real peaks and valleys with me,” Nathan Williams says. “I can be super optimistic and I can feel really good, and then I can hit a skid and it’s like an earthquake hits my life, and everything just falls apart. Some of it is my own doing, of course.” It’s this self awareness that permeates each of Hideaway’s songs, marking them each as mature reckonings with who he is. LP pressed on orange vinyl.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! If Al Green is heads on the Hi Records coin, ANN PEEBLES is tails. The signature female artist on the legendary Memphis soul and R&B label, Ann Peebles rocked the pre-disco '70s with songs of love, lost love, and love straight up taken. Released in 1972, Straight From The Heart preceded by just two years Peebles' über-classic, I Can't Stand The Rain, proving the young, soon to be American R&B icon didn't need worldwide fame and record sales for a license to be fierce and provocative (see the album track "I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home Tonight").

***BACK IN PRINT!!! The 1977 Belle Album was AL GREEN’s first album recorded without longtime producer WILLIE MITCHELL, owner of Green's former label, Hi Records. With Mitchell and his label Green also abandoned the famed Hi Rhythm Section, which had previously played a large part in defining Green's distinctive musical style. This also marks the first instance in which Green plays lead guitar on his records. The Belle Album is one of the last in a string of secular R&B recordings made by Green; he had recently converted to Christianity and had been ordained as a pastor, and thereafter he began creating gospel records exclusively.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! “OTIS CLAY is the kind of blesses, pulsating soul singer that Memphis is known for. An effortlessly funky performer, Clay has found a solid home with producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records. Trying To Live My Life Without You, his first Hi album, illustrates a no-bones funkiness that immediately establishes Clay as a singer of the first rank. Otis Clay has blazed a trail in the gospel and R&B fields with a successful string of accomplishments for the past twenty-six years. In 1946, at the age of four, Otis began a singing career as part of a family gospel group that travelled through Mississippi. After ten years of touring the South, Clay moved to Chicago joining the Golden Jubilaires with whom he came under the direction of Odell Carter. A few years later he became part of a black folk singing outfit, the Blue Jays. Between 1964 and 1965 he was lead singer with the noted gospel act, the Sensational Nightingales. As a solo performer, his first straight R&B effort came in 1965. Signed to One-der-ful Records he had many hits, most notably "Satisfied Just Loving You" and "That's How It Is." His new association with Hi Records and Willie Mitchell is a genuinely exciting merger of two distinctively forceful artists operating for many years in the same territory. Willie Mitchell is the Memphis soul stirrer who has concocted so many fine things recently with Al Green, Denise LaSalle, and Ann Peebles. Over the years, he has...

He sang and played with blues artists Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, and Junior Wells in the ‘50s before recording with Jimmy Reed for Vee-Jay in 1959. He made his solo debut that same year with Federal. Johnson toured with Howlin’ Wolf from late 1959 until 1962, when Willie Mitchell signed him to Hi Records. Johnson recorded for both Twilight and Hi in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, clicking with the dance/novelty cut “Come on Sock It to Me” and crackling message track “Is It Because I’m Black?” He had his biggest hit with “Take Me to the River” in 1975, reaching number seven on the R&B charts.

***SONGHOY BLUES is a band whose experiences in Mali have opened their eyes to universal problems plaguing people everywhere. Using the pain and lessons learned from having to leave their hometowns in northern Mali, the band realizes that human rights is a concept that extends far beyond what they have seen with their own eyes and far beyond just the borders of Mali. In order for the band to see their homes restored, they understand the fight must be fought on all fronts, for everybody across the spectrum. They are no longer refugees or exiles or four people with instruments—they are Songhoy Blues, a musical voice for empowerment and equality. Working with MATT SWEENEY, who encouraged Songhoy Blues to make the album they want to make, Optimisme confronts our world today. On “Badala" and "Gabi," the band seeks the empowerment of women, asking for centuries-old misogynistic practices to be done away with. With “Worry,” the band advises both the young and the old that positive vibes and persistence are the best tools to fight our struggles. In “Assada,” the band praises and thanks the everyday warriors who wake up everyday to sweat for the betterment of their communities and in “Dournia,” the band laments the lack of compassion and empathy between humans today in the face of increasing materialism and selfishness. “Bon Bon” warns of being fooled by shiny promises, and in “Barre” the band asks for the youth to get involved at home for change while warning...

The songs on Alphabetland were written in the 18 months leading up to release, except for "Delta 88 Nightmare" which dates back to the late 1970s (a demo track of it was previously released on the 1997 anthology Beyond and Back: The X Anthology and the 2001 reissue of Los Angeles), and "Cyrano De Berger's Back", which bassist John Doe wrote in the late seventies, and which was originally released by The Flesh Eaters on their 1981 album A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die. Additionally, “I Gotta Fever” is a re-write of the 1981 song “Heater.” "Cyrano" was also recorded by X on the first post-Billy Zoom album, See How We Are but the band members were always unhappy with the recording and preferred this version with Zoom's saxophone. Produced by ANDREW SARLO (Big Thief) and featuring BIG THIEF drummer JAMES KRIVCHENIA, along with Big Thief collaborator and TWAIN member MATTHEW DAVIDSON. “Old Flowers is about heartbreak. There are a million records and songs about that, but I did not lie when writing these songs. This album is about loving and caring for the person you know you can’t be with. It’s about being afraid to be vulnerable after you’ve been hurt. It’s about a woman who is alone, but okay with that, if it means truth. This was my truth this year—my nine-year relationship ended and I’m a woman alone in the world, but happy to know herself.”—Courtney Marie Andrews. Pressed on colored vinyl.

***The debut album from Nashville rockers the COUNTRY WESTERNS. Even if you don’t know their names, you likely know their work. Drummer BRIAN KOTZUR starred in Harmony Korine’s film Trash Humpers and was a member of SILVER JEWS. Singer, guitarist, and songwriter JOSEPH PLUNKET led Brooklyn legends THE WEIGHT, with a bass-playing side-hustle for Atlanta’s GENTLEMAN JESSE. Plunket relocated to Nashville ten years ago and opened a bar. It was there, in a town teeming with solo artists and hired guns, that the two bonded over their shared desire to be in an actual band. In 2016, Plunket and Kotzur spent a year in Kotzur’s garage writing riffs and tracking demos. During those hazy, late nights they began to hone their sound. Eventually, with a handful of songs and the encouragement of their friends, they began their quest for the third ‘Country Western’. After some time playing with different lineups, their friend SABRINA RUSH, another rock-n-roller for life, joined them on bass. On their debut album, Plunket delivers his words with a cool, raspy bravado and a hint of twang. The lyrics bend towards poetry and punk rock sneer in equal measure and lines such as “Maybe I ain’t smart, but I ain’t lying” set the tone for the entire album. The songs are full of insistent guitar riffs played on an electric twelve-string, the jangle either mitigating the edge or pushing it further.

***A deeply personal album for bandleader ROB GROTE— all of the songs were written in his bedroom as a means of coping with struggles he was facing at the time with no intention of them putting them on a record. ***REISSUED!!! Cats and Dogs hit the street in June of ’93 and represented a quantum leap from everywhere ROYAL TRUX had previously broadcast from. Their innate feel for disparate styles had been demonstrated over the course of three wildly diverse albums, but Cats and Dogs wove diversity expertly throughout its eleven songs, all united by an interest in rhythmic rock and roll. There was the mulch of grunge, a lean stand of retro-soul, plumes of psychedelic vapor and a thudding post-garage all of which was flung out venomously as if owed to no-one. It sounded like fun—the laughs that had always been encoded in Trux songs were warmer this time around. Their planet had drawn eerily close to earth; we were almost able to read the signs from where we stood.

Originally released when the band was fresh out of high school, they first came to nationwide attention when a one-take performance of their track “Funeral Beds” was filmed at a local Philadelphia studio and skyrocketed to the front page of Reddit, with WNYC noting that the song “showcased an impressive knack (for) memorable vocals and for songcraft that starts as introspective indie rock and builds to a climatic wall of noise.” WXPN’s John Vettesse caught their live set, saying “a thundering swell cuts, leaving a clean guitar arpeggio floating in space as ROB GROTE catches his breath; the verses build in waves, with the heaviness sometimes derived just from BRADEN LAWRENCE’s drums. Grote is an intense, emphatic, occasionally bewildering stage presence—he kicks, stomps and snarls, both at the mic and far away—but guitarist MARK LARSON and bassist CONNOR JACOBUS hold their own, shuffling and bobbing and giving the overall band a dynamic stage presence.” Live, The Districts are a force.

As we steer ourselves away post-haste from the (semi-arbitrary watershed) year 2000 (or 2001, if you’re that kind), many among us are still unsure of which stance to prefer: that of the forward-looking visionary elite or the historically-informed cult of the sentimentalist. Confusing times, but timely times for the reissue of ROYAL TRUX’s 1998 “masterpiece” (according to many, though we are inclined to believe that all of their releases were equally masterful), Accelerator. This album split the difference and intersected both angles to create an ass-kicking music machine that still confronts today with its dialed-out production values rendering ten tunes of glittering platinum hooks and colored by numbers with hooligan-outfitted choruses. ***BACK IN STOCK!!! Received a 7.7 rating from Pitchfork. The long awaited new album from SPIRITUALIZED. From the opening lullaby of “A Perfect Miracle” through to the Morse Code fadeout at the close of “Sail on Through,” Spiritualized wrap layer upon layer of gloriously transcendent sound together to create a mesmerizing and cinematic collection of songs. There are points where the waves of blissful noise are almost overwhelming—the thunderous climax of “On the Sunshine”; the spectral waltz of “The Prize”; the towering guitar solo on “I’m Your Man”—where one can imagine the studio’s speakers vibrating themselves off of the walls. Which is an incredible feat when you discover that the album was conceived and recorded almost entirely by one man—JASON PIERCE aka J SPACEMAN—in an upstairs room in his east London home. Whereas bedroom recording is commonplace for a generation of musicians who’ve grown up with horizon-expanding tech, Spiritualized have long used the studio as they would an extra member of the band—as a vital building block in the construction of some of the most cherished records of the modern era. This time would be very different. With no grounding in digital recording, Jason had to learn everything from scratch. For the listener, the nine tracks on And Nothing Hurt effortlessly replicate the scale and power of Spiritualized’s previous releases, whether it’s the sonic blowback of “On the Sunshine,” the last dime in the jukebox love letter of “Let’s Dance” or the swell of an imaginary orchestra that seems to...

***"After breaking through with a batch of restless, itinerant songs on Honest Life in 2016, Courtney Marie Andrews longs for something more permanent on the follow-up. The Seattle singer spends much of May Your Kindness Remain exploring ideas of home and what it means to have roots, on 10 new tunes that are lusher and more expansive while leaving plenty of room to showcase her astonishing voice. Andrews and her band recorded May Your Kindness Remain with producer Mark Howard, whose voluminous credits include albums by Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris. Howard’s understated aesthetic suits Andrews, who pushes herself toward bolder musical arrangements and a fuller, more soulful sound than the traveling-woman-with-guitar feel of Honest Life. The difference is evident from the start: 'May Your Kindness Remain' opens with the title track, a gospel-tinged number that swells from understated to massive and enveloping. Organ gives way to a solemn overdriven guitar part, and gospel singer C.C. White backs Andrews on the refrain as she lets her voice build, then pulls back until the end, when she cuts loose with a rare blend of power and feeling that can bring you to your knees..."—Paste Magazine
