***One of the great characters in rock and soul music is JERRY WILLIAMS, better known as the eccentric, idiosyncratic, and always entertaining SWAMP DOGG (no relation to Snoop Doggy Dogg). A Virginia native, Williams invented his own legend by claiming that he had little proper schooling, only to wake up one day and find himself a musical genius (his words). Actually, Williams is very talented, and an early association with Jerry Wexler and Phil Walden led to him working for a number of years as a producer, engineer, and occasional songwriter with Atlantic in the ‘60s. At decade’s end, however, he decided that the time was right to unleash Swamp Dogg’s singular view of the world on an unsuspecting public. The initial result was one of the most gloriously gonzo soul recordings of all time, Total Destruction to Your Mind. Along with living up to its title, it was a renegade chunk of not-quite-commercial music, with an unforgettable (though fuzzy) cover shot of the portly Dogg in his underwear. Although undeniably great, Total Destruction to Your Mind is one of the most obscure soul records ever made. That, however, has nothing to do with the music, which rocks in a way reminiscent of Solomon Burke or Wilson Pickett. The album’s charm may have to do with Dogg’s world view: part libertarian politics; part Zappa-style critiques of commerciality and capitalism; and part horny male, the latter defining for better and worse his view of women. Although he spent years working in...

***PLEASE CHECK STOCK!!! FRANKIE ROSE’s second album of slick new wave pop, Herein Wild, is an improvement on 2012’s Interstellar, her debut solo outing. The album includes thick string accompaniment and firing bass that is reminiscent of The Cure’s late ‘80s output. It is a dark album with an upbeat overtone—perfect for the beginning of Autumn. There’s nothing hidden on the album. The production is top notch and the songs are excellently arranged. It also includes an interesting take on the lesser known Damned song, “Street Of Dreams.” Rose will headline Bowery Ballroom the night before release date and will tour throughout the Fall and early 2014.

***“ROBERT BELFOUR’s sophomore effort for Fat Possum—at 63, he is one of the youngest artists on the roster and is by far the most ‘polished,’ if the Delta blues can ever really be called that—proves his debut was indeed only a beginning. In stark contrast to his labelmates, Belfour strictly plays acoustic blues, but he plays them with the same dark, trancelike feel of Junior Kimbrough, haunting spookiness of Fred McDowell, rhythmic intensity of John Lee Hooker, and sprawling drawl of Lightnin' Hopkins. TED GAINEY aids Belfour on a drum kit. While the first album was all of a piece, and everything but the vocal seemed to be recorded at the same level (and even then, Belfour couldn't always be understood among the ringing guitars and shuffling drums), Pushin' My Luck is nervier, a bit more edgy. Belfour's truly nearly unbelievable singing is a bit more in the foreground, enough to add to the hypnotic repetition in his music, while the drums—played no more elaborately than Meg White's in the White Stripes—are mixed just a tad higher, bringing it extremely close to the punch this stuff has when played in front of a live audience. Fans of Kimbrough's guitar playing will be instantly drawn to the polyrhythmic, droning chords and ambling, elegantly raw, slippery fills that Belfour plays, whether it's on "Hill Stomp," the title track, "I Got My Eyes on You," "Sweet Brown Sugar," or "I'm Gonna Leave," which closes the set. The vibe is the same everywhere; this...

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Better 40 years later than never: The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the IGGY AND THE STOOGES logo—the immortal proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power—as Fat Possum Records releases the all-new Iggy and the Stooges studio album, Ready To Die. Ready To Die finds IGGY POP, guitarist JAMES WILLIAMSON and drummer SCOTT “ROCK ACTION” ASHETON reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time since the legendary Raw Power sessions, with MIKE WATT filling in for the late RON ASHETON on bass. The results are the closest thing to a time capsule to 1973—or at least to Iggy’s subsequent efforts with Williamson, including 1977’s Kill City and 1979’s New Values—that rock ‘n’ roll is likely to proffer in this millennium. The new album’s opening one-two of “Burn” and “Sex & Money” pair sublimely blunt and self-explanatory subject matter with back alley razor-blade guitars and a troglodytic rhythmic stomp as intensely single-minded as Iggy’s lyrical statements of intent. Elsewhere on the album, anthems abound in the form of the most dead-on rallying cry for the lower-working-class dispossessed to date--the succinctly and aptly titled “Job”—as well as a title track that mixes a signature Iggy Pop mission statement of angry desperation with guitar pyrotechnics that recall those halcyon opening salvos of “Search & Destroy.” Just as Iggy exhumed the original Stooges name when he reunited in 2003 with the Asheton brothers, the revival of the Iggy and the Stooges moniker that first appeared on the...

***FRED MCDOWELL was born in Rossville, Tennessee. His parents, who were farmers, died when McDowell was a youth. He started playing guitar at the age of 14 and played at dances around Rossville. Wanting a change from plowing fields, he moved to Memphis in 1926 where he started to work in the Buck-Eye feed mill where they processed cotton into oil and other products. He also had a number of other jobs and played music for tips. Later in 1928 he moved south into Mississippi to pick cotton. He settled in Como, Mississippi, about 40 miles south of Memphis, in 1940 or 1941, and worked steadily as a farmer, continuing to perform music at dances and picnics. Initially he played slide guitar using a pocket knife and then a slide made from a beef rib bone, later switching to a glass slide for its clearer sound. He played with the slide on his ring finger. While commonly lumped together with Delta Blues singers, McDowell actually may be considered the first of the bluesmen from the ‘North Mississippi’ region—parallel to, but somewhat east of the Delta region—to achieve widespread recognition for his work. A version of the state’s signature musical form somewhat closer in structure to its African roots (often eschewing the chord change for the hypnotic effect of the droning, single chord vamp), the north hill country blues style (or at least its aesthetic) may be heard to have been carried on in the music of such figures as Junior...

***OTIS CLAY made most of his best-known records in Memphis during the early ‘70s, but he’s still universally hailed as Chicago’s deep soul king. In a city filled to overflowing with legendary blues artists, Clay has become the proud standard-bearer for Chicago’s enduring soul tradition. Like so many of his contemporaries, Clay’s intense vocal style reflects a gospel background. He made the secular jump in 1965, signing with Chicago’s One-derful Records and issuing a series of gospel-tinged soul records that were a lot grittier than the customary Windy City soul sound. Clay inaugurated Atlantic’s Cotillion subsidiary in 1968 with a supercharged cover of the Sir Douglas Quintet’s “She’s About a Mover,” produced by Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals shortly before the singer joined forces with Hi Records boss Willie Mitchell. With the relentlessly driving Hi Rhythm Section in tow, Clay waxed his biggest seller in 1972, “Trying to Live My Life Without You,” later covered very successfully by Bob Seger.

Improving on the characterization of the trademark HI sound, WILLIE MITCHELL's decision to switch from the gritty syncopation of deep Southern soul to a slower and more seductive bass supports AL GREEN at the peak of his powers. There are no false steps here, as every single track on the album is a pillar of the genre, from the opening massive cover version of the Temptations' "I Can't Get Next To You," which is reinvented with a lethal dose of irresistible groove, to the perfect 1-2 pitch of "Tired Of Being Alone," followed by "I'm A Ram." ***Received an 8.1 rating from Pitchfork. “The detachment you can feel throughout our younger records is gone. We felt like it was time to make a bigger, more generous statement.” When describing the new album, Heaven (produced by PHIL EK—Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, Built to Spill etc.), THE WALKMEN lead singer HAMILTON LEITHAUSER portrays a band hitting maturity, comfortable in its mastery, after a decade together. Adds guitarist PAUL MAROON, “when you’re starting out, you’re sitting there trying to come up with a big idea, but after a while, you learn about the process of writing. You learn about your friends in the band and how they work best.” It’s been ten years since the Walkmen made their debut album, Everybody Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone. Ten years since they mixed the lovingly recorded analogue tapes down to the cheapest CD burner they could find. Ten years since lead singer Hamilton Leithauser snapped guitarist Paul Maroon’s arm in a celebratory wrestling match. Ten years since critics attached them to a New York scene they never wanted any part of. But when Leithauser sings “We Can’t Be Beat,” on the opening track of their new album, he means it, like Cool Hand Luke getting up off the floor for one more round. “The world is ours,” he declares. This time, he may be right.

Falco, Tav And The Panther Burns

***“The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, TAV FALCO, was, along with the Cramps, one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly (though his version of the sound lacked the campy horror movie ambience others brought to it), and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade. Born in Arkansas, Falco moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1973 and introduced himself to the city’s creative community as a filmmaker and performance artist while supporting himself with a variety of odd jobs. While making documentary films on blues artists in Tennessee and Mississippi (including a piece on R.L. Burnside shot at his legendary juke joint in 1974), Falco was inspired to pick up the guitar, though his first on-stage performance with the instrument involved him destroying a six-string with a chain saw.”—Allmusic Guide.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Received an 8.4 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork. Twenty-two year old TREVOR POWERS, whose musical venture is called YOUTH LAGOON, has had a long year. Not because he’s been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life—the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living. Throughout the course of 2010, Powers began to write an album about things he had a hard time talking about. He claims that when he tries to talk about it to people, he doesn’t make sense. So he wrote an album about it entitled The Year of Hibernation. Powers explains, “For my whole life I’ve dealt with extreme anxiety. Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird.. bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I’m literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it.” Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic. Powers claims his music is like letting people read his journal. “I don’t think I could...

***AVAILABLE AGAIN ON VINYL!!! “Recorded in one afternoon in the Holly Springs, Mississippi, hometown of 69-year-old blues great RL BURNSIDE, A Ass Pocket of Whiskey documents a single noisy, spirited session with Burnside, his sideman KENNY BRWON, and the punk-bred blues reconstructionist trio called the JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION. The pairing of JSBE, led by a white Ivy League dropout turned downtown New York scuz who poses as a hard-living blues rocker, and RL Burnside, the last of the real down-home badass bluesmen of the Mississippi hills, is strange—perhaps sacrilege to blues purists—but oddly appropriate. And the moments of pure musical chaos caught on this record—both cross-cultural and cross-generational—sound entirely within the realm of both acts. With its unorthodox accompaniment (including wheezy theremin and Spencer's trademark shouts), the album is probably not the most fitting introduction to Burnside. But as the oldest man ever to record for the hip indie-rockers at Matador, no doubt he gladly sacrificed juke-joint obscurity for the chance to appear on MTV's 120 Minutes.”—Roni Sarig

The melodies here are strong, the lyrics full of Van Zandt's razor-sharp insight, and the production is sparse and to the point, bringing to mind the inconspicuous polish of High, Low and in Between. The feel here is a balance between folk and country, with Van Zandt's voice and guitar up front, letting the songs speak for themselves. The tunes are full of heartbreak and hopelessness, making it a great album to put on during, or right after, the breakup of an affair.”

***Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of 4. Actually, it was a Cracker Jack box with a ruler taped to it, and the first of his many Suzuki music lessons involved simply bowing to the teacher and going home. He spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear so when it came time for a restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it wasn't such a giant leap. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has instead opted to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter in the process. Over 100,000 sales of 2007’s Armchair Apocrypha, hundreds of shows including a Chicago homecoming for over 15,000 fans at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion, and dozens of critical accolades and year-end best lists later…
