***12 years after Hospital Productions released the first Raspberry Bulbs album, the band returns to the label with their most focused offering to date. Gone are the interludes found on their last two albums. This time RB has distilled all their strengths into 11 concise songs. Listeners may be tempted to mention "noise rock" or "post punk" in describing the sound, but RB thinks outside the limits of any genre, and stands in contrast to those whose approach amounts to failed exercises in style. The band spent two years boiling each song down to its essence, while sacrificing none of the power and dynamics found on previous records. Somehow the results are both more metallic and more melodic. The vocals, in particular, are fittingly more venomous this time, with their vitriol aimed at the current narrow-minded, oppressive "underground" landscape. Prepare yourself. Originally recorded immediately after the canonical Gallon Gravy classic, this is pure-—definitive—loop-heavy noise energy and dynamism that would become the signature of Kohei Gomi's electronic studies having influenced two generations of underground electronics since. Hailing from a background of Japanese punk, Kohei Gomi stayed true to the fierce ethos of independence and experimentation that reached its peak in Japan in the late '90s. But make no mistake, Mr. Gomi never stagnated into a single platform, having worked with such diverse labels as Alternative Tentacles, Relapse, Editions Mego, and so on. Composed with a mysterious configuration of constantly flowing noise hardware—always recorded live without overdubs, Gomi went on to risk taking computer explorations into the roots of avant-garde compositions inspired by the likes of Pan Sonic and David Tudor. Having reached cult status and maintaining an air of mystery after an onslaught of now classic and highly collectible tape-only releases, such as the monstrous Cacophony Of A Thousand Pleasures 3xCS which was been cited as an influence for Mika Vainio. Originally initiated for the Merzbow, Kelly Moran, Prurient USA tour (representing three generations of heavy electronics), this archival recording is finally released as 'Chain Reaction At Dusk'.  Moran and Prurient first met in 2018 in support of electronic music luminary Oneohtrix Point Never at his legendary debut of 'Myriad' at the Park Avenue Armory. The two bonded over an unlikely composite of piano, drone and noise synthesis (Moran from John Cage, while early Prurient tapes cut-up Erik Satie). A leader in the realm of prepared piano, Kelly Moran quickly drew attention for her massive and seamlessly complex juxtapositions of plucked icy melodic sequences and deep sub bass compositions, culminating in a stunning 2018 LP, 'Ultraviolet' for Warp Records.  With 3-tracks of continuous intertwining melodic tension, Moran continues her juxtaposition of crystalline single note attacks upon a bed of massive low end prepared drones.  Shattering genre, Moran culls from a broad palate of classical, post-minimalism, ambient and other forms to free the piano from convention pushing high and low frequencies through electronic pairing and coupling. Recorded at her home in fall 2018, Moran’s split side showcases the composer’s prepared piano treated with delays and granular synthesis over a heavy wash of droning, arpeggiating synthesizers. Similarly, Prurient returns with a side parallax-view vocal barrage complimentary to Moran’s fractal modes. E-Saggila - an enigmatic cult producer in electronics constructing soaring calm from dynamic turbulence as the era of domesticated destruction and creation arrives. Conceived by Iraqi-born, Canadian sound artist Rita Mikhael, E-Saggila has quickly established itself as an unapologetic presence in superseding divisionism in underground music. With prior crucial releases on Northern Electronics and BANK Records, the project quickly gained attention among the disparate factions of noise, breakcore, and infrastructure rising outside of the traditional european club superstructure. After delivering a commanding and highlight performance at the 2019 Hospital Fest, E-Saggila forged an alliance with Hospital Productions and now presents her label debut Corporate Cross, an intricate multifaceted double album that requires introspection with its wide spectrum of emotion, coldness and light that defies definition. Combining elements of breakcore, ambient, contemporary composition and twisted rhythms, the album provides a deep headphone listen that can function both as elemental elevation or wreck any club system. Heavy cut-up bass is immediate and but never overrides detailed abstract melodic hooks. E-Saggila creates music that coexists on the dance-floor, the car stereo and the bedroom bookshelf speakers, simultaneously and seamlessly. Written and produced by E-Saggila, the composer took inspiration from social anthropologist Mary Douglas, particularly in regards to her concepts of “dirt” which associates dirt as a form of disruption to order. a key component of the 1990s birmingham techno sound, and co-founder of the downwards label, female's music is as important for everything it doesn't tell you as it is for the pummeling rhythms it forces you to engage with. one of the few remaining examples of an artist with a palpable sense of mystique, female conjures a world that evokes film noir, or even something out of a Burroughs story. the language of this music will be familiar to those who listen to "dance music", but the bare building blocks are often all we get. development within these tracks is subtle, and it's the sense that something is being held back that gives the music its power. the forceful minimalism of these tracks creates a narrative that, when combined with their titles and the visual imagery of the sleeves, is at once immediate and yet feels almost impenetrable. this tension is what makes the music so invigorating. It's as if we're hearing blocks of sound carved out from larger monoliths that have no beginning or end. Fragmentation was the third full-length album from Orphx, originally released in 1996 on the legendary Malignant Records label. Rich Oddie, Christina Sealey, and Aron West had founded the project three years earlier, creating pitch black noisescapes inspired by early industrial music and the extreme fringes of metal. By 1996, West had departed to focus on his absurdist noise project Tropism, while Oddie and Sealey began to push Orphx in a more rhythmic direction. Cassette releases on their own Xcreteria imprint (reissued by Hospital Productions and Mannequin Records in 2017) quickly attracted the attention of Malignant Records, who offered to release the next album. Fragmentation was made using the same basic tools as the early cassettes: contact microphones, scrap metal, effects pedals, feedback circuits, a drum machine, a couple of synths, and location recordings and found sounds manipulated by Sealey on reel to reel machines and an 8-bit sampler. While early Orphx recordings were primarily improvised direct to tape, this album places much greater emphasis on carefully constructed layers of sound, shaping their improvisational energy into powerful compositions that combines death industrial atmospheres and brutal power electronics with relentless, hypnotic percussion. Suburban Scum is his devilishly detailed debut of girder-strength techno for Hospital Productions, forged in the image of late '90s hard techno and reverberating strongly with prevailing trends. It's inspired and informed by the artist's deeply held urge to undo the dogma instilled by his religious Christian upbringing. and, as such, it expresses a sense of free will within the context of Satan's fall from grace, fully grasping techno's repetitive excess as a potential path to hedonism, freedom and other ungodly matters. Recorded between 2016-2019, the eight tracks of Suburban Scum find Guilt Attendant in cold control of his agency. While they may possibly make crowds consider their own relationship to god, especially in his use of sampled sermons by his former preacher that crop up throughout, and most strikingly on the closing "Severe Mercy," the majority are more likely to make dancers slam the walls and trample a hole in the 'floor. ****Regarded by Dominik Fernow as the "best US noise project in terms of texture and composition", SKIN CRIME return to Hospital Productions with an immanent inversion of noise convention exploring ideas of tense, slow-burn patience instead of aggressive intensity. Brutally active between the early '90s and mid '00s, Skin Crime took a 12-year hiatus until 2016 and the bloodshed of their instantly sold-out, 20xCD boxset of archival material. That same year they also issued Ghosts I Have Been, a crushingly bleak album inspired by Japanese mythology and ghost stories which have paved the way for this new one, where the band's PATRICK O'NEIL and MARK JAMESON continue to refine their instincts into the dankest brand of organic ambient noise. In key with their ghostly Japanese muse, specifically the Bakaneko (1968) or Ghost Cat movies of the '50s and '60s, as well as the writing of Lafcadio Hearn, aka Koizumi Yakumo, the author of Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904)—Skin Crime's music in Traveller on the Road is all about presence and the suggestibility of hypnagogic and half-awake states. “Back at the start of this decade the underground conversation between noise, techno and ambient music manifested definitively thru Vatican Shadow’s eerily evocative glut of tape releases for Hospital Productions in a manner that resonated with the subversive post-industrial music of Muslimgauze and Whitehouse - who were both key touchstones for Dominick Fernow (Prurient, Vatican Shadow, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement).  The ‘Kuwaiti Airforce’ tape which lends this set its title was only available in an edition of 25 copies at Vatican Shadow’s September 29, 2012 show in LA with Silent Servant, Demdike Stare, Andy Stott, and Kangding Ray. ***The best Vatican Shadow release, bar none, finally lands on vinyl for the first time as part of a long overdue remaster/reissue series for the project's earliest, fêted releases Originally slunk out on tape in 2011, Pakistan Military Academy sees Dominick Fernow (Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) calibrate his night-vision goggles to scan the most potent, affective visions of dark ambient and militaristic techno in his war chest. At the time of release, only months after the capture of Osama Bin Laden by US Army SEAL "Night Stalkers", the project really came into its own as a form of impressionistic reportage, daring to grasp the nettle of contemporary US geopolitics in a way that, as music and art history will only make starker, everyone else broadly avoided at the time. In place of literal lyrics, a mix of quotes from newspapers and official government communiques, together with evocative photo documentation, supply the song titles and narrative/aesthetic framework for what are essentially abstracted emotions related to American military and foreign policy. Depending on how much you read or buy into it, for us at least the music rarely fails to evoke the shadowy unease and precarity of that era, as the sound betrayed an underlying mood contrary to the positivity of Obama-era politics, and that also spoke to the realignment of borders between musicks and socio-economics. ***VATICAN SHADOW's impossible to find early tapes finally arrive on vinyl, kicking off a completist series of new Dubplate & Mastering remasters with a first volume featuring: Byzantine Private CIA (2010), Mural of Saddam (2011), and Yemeni Commandos (2011). Arriving under a shroud of anonymity in 2010 with the four tracks of Byzantine Private CIA, Vatican Shadow has since become one of the most vital projects manned by DOMINICK FERNOW (PRURIENT, RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT). Daring to grasp the nettle of US geopolitics at a time when nobody else would (and that hasn't really changed), Vatican Shadow hijacked imagery and text from a plethora of news articles, books and government publications, and used them to adorn and title his all-instrumental compositions, re-contextualizing U.S. foreign policy in a way that recalls how original industrial, noise, and post-punk mutants used their art and music to express feelings towards the cold war and western socio-economics during the late '70s and thru the '80s. ***California Black Vows, the new CLAY RENDERING full length, chronicles the group's move away from the comfort zone straight into the dark heart of the west. Since their last album, Snowthorn (2015) the band relocated from the suburbs of the Midwest to the sinister shine of Los Angeles. More change was to follow; a duo for most of its existence, Clay Rendering's core of MIKE and TARA CONNELLY chose to invite two allies into their closed circle: SERA TIMMS of BLACK MARE on bass and JOE POTTSOF SOLLILJA on drums. ***Definitive Hospital Productions artist JIM MROZ aka LUSSURIA, follows duties on Prurient's Rainbow Mirror LP and an appearance on Vatican Shadow's Berghain 09 mix/compilation with a new opus worthy of comparison to his dank ambient classics, American Babylon (2012) and Industriale Illuminato (2014). In the foreboding Three Knocks, Lussuria limns an unconscious, near-death experience based on a tale told by his mother, who was admitted to ER after an allergic reaction escalated into something inexplicable. She was put in a medically-induced coma and administered a breathing tube. When under the effect of heavy sedatives, she spoke of a visit by angels who warned of an impending disaster. She eventually came around, and recounted that her illness was preceded by three knocks at her office door, slow and heavy—proposing that each knock was a mockery of the Holy Trinity; one knock for each crucifixion—but when she answered nobody was there. This omen, and its confirmatory hallucination form the basis of Lussuria's utterly absorbing new album. While Lapke himself may best be known for his production and mastering work, both for such diverse sounding acts like PRURIENT, NOTHING and the HAXAN CLOAK to his audio restoration work for COUM Transmissions and Shizuka, Alberich has achieved a cult on par with many of the legends he works with; Lapke's diverse contributions as a producer are recognizable for the perfect balance of maximalist and minimalist electronics that Alberich has relentlessly authored. Since Alberich's 2010 masterful and highly collectable two-and-a-half hour NATO-Uniformen album, he has become a powerful force of modern industrial music. With only a series of limited tape and split releases, fans have been waiting with bated breath for a true follow-up album. Quantized Angel is Alberich's first full-length album in almost a decade. In the intervening years between albums, Alberich has grown more nuanced, creating atmosphere and tension on par with Silent Servant's classic Negative Fascination LP in regards to production and attention to detail. The results create a newly polished but no less intense vision of modern industrial music. Opium Crop"makes a return to what could be termed a vintage Vatican Shadow sound, steeped in nods to Muslimgauze and modern geopolitics and fringed with an aura of clammy, atmospheric terror. The title piece pushes off across the front with a sort of stately, waltzing rhythm and druggy synth pads recalling John Foxx and DJ Screw as much as Bryn Jones. "Hellfire Hidden Tribes" sinks into the B-side with lagging Dabke rhythm embedded in oily black backdrops, occasionally lit up with vaporous synth stabs mirroring the arc and flash of distant artillery, and leading to an exquisite ambient devotional, "Loyal To The Deceased". “Hospital Productions' hook up with vaunted fashion designer Yang Li for this crazy one-off edition featuring material recorded by Justin Broadrick for Li's by now infamous funeral-themed AW18 Paris fashion week show, plus an alternate 12 minute version, and another 12 minute reworking by Prurient.Not your typical seasonal paean, ‘Christmas’ was inspired by, in Broadrick’s own words; “the onset of the Christmas period and the onset of emotions and feelings of nostalgia, joy and sadness that the period often evokes”. Considered a classic in the Jesu songbook, it'ss now paired with ‘Life Mass’, a new version written for London-based Chinese fashion designer Yang Li’s Paris A/W ’18 runway soundtrack, as well as a killer, keeling, noisy overhaul by Prurient.The dense, chest-bursting post-rock/shoegaze appeal of the original still stands, but, for our money, it’s now bettered by the new material. ‘Life Mass’ is effectively the inverse of ‘Christmas’, catching Broadrick at his most vulnerable and sublime with plangent vox framed by a slow, tear-jerking snowfall of guitars, whereas Prurient renders the title track from a whole other, frosty-window perspective primed for when xmas all gets a bit too much and you need to reset.Epic.”—Boomkat
