Silent Servant's Harm In Hand 12" single, includes exclusive bonus track "Death Of Decadence" for destroying the club. Juan Mendez has evolved to more aggressive and stripped-down acid punk electro dance attacks on Silent Servant's equally vital follow-up, Shadows Of Death And Desire(HOS 613CD/LP, 2018), from which "Harm In Hand" comes.

Engineering Analysis Of Inner Death by Linekraft

Linekraft

Engineering Analysis Of Inner Death
Hospital Productions

***LINEKRAFT is the premier industrial performance unit arising from today's contemporary Japanese underworld. Although active in the industrial stratosphere for many years, Linekraft has quickly developed a reputation as the leading industrial act from Japan through a series of stark, violent, and nihilistic live actions. The roots of these activities surround the lost tradition of "metal junks", a succession of organized and disorganized physical strikes on various oil drums and canisters with long and short metal bars. This existential scrapyard is sped up, slowed down and stained through tape manipulation and layered, replayed, cut apart and reversed in psychic torment of old school analog processes. From this Kafka-esque cage of uninhabitable obstacles an alien and dehumanized voice of pure oscillations cries out equally in anger and despair. Resembling moments of Pacific 231 live recordings from the early '80s. Engineering Analysis of Inner Death is the first full length for Linekraft and it shows he has arrived on record with the same atmosphere of his brilliant performances in the flesh. For fans of Esplendor Geometrico, Vivenza and White Hospital. Deluxe vellum sleeve; clear vinyl.

***Low Jack and Equiknoxx join Dominick Fernow's Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement on a new double vinyl expansion of Red Ants Genesis, originally issued on limited cassette in 2018. Recorded in winter 2017, Red Ants Genesis finds the Hospital Productions boss discovering strength in collaboration following the triumph of his classic Ambient Black Magic (2017), which was conjured with the crucial assistance of Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant. Here, he works with Phillippe Hallais aka Low Jack and of Editions Gravats, who also tags in his pals Gavsborg and Time Cow from Jamaican digidub futurists Equiknoxx for a killer new version of the title track. On the tape's original four tracks, Low Jack transmogrifies Fernow's high volume microphone recordings of synthetic field ecologies with masterful sleight of hand in-the-edits, resulting in a hyperreal detachment and realignment of spatial proprioceptions executed with exquisite textural tactility. It's far more oblique and desiccated than the relatively lush Ambient Black Magic outing, rendering the stark durational immersion of their 30 minute "Red Ants (Mics)" split over the first disc, while Low Jack's percussive edits really come into play on the utterly gutted "Shields Ferns / Brown Pine Magic" and the slow, febrile push of "Papua Land (Live Edit)." No doubt one of the biggest attractions here is the curveball of an Equiknoxx remix of "Red Ants Genesis." Surely one of the first meetings of Jamaican dancehall and dark ambient in existence, it's a spellbinding piece of dub physics that demonstrates the endless, mutable imagination of Gavsborg...

***Two years since his last releases for Hospital Productions—A Gathering Together)—L.I.E.S. Records boss RON MORELLI returns with Disappearer, his third full-length. Disappearer claws and tears its way through 13 tracks at 54 minutes long, touching upon everything from cold, stripped-back electronics, to hints of 1990s Hague scum techno, to grim passages reminiscent of early tape minimalists, the amalgamation forming a nasty sonic narrative that reaches an explosive unsettling apex. This is a definitive return to tense, urgent punk roots; the minimal beat construction, unexpected acid burned vocals, and stark atmospheres touch upon Morelli's full spectrum of influences with his signature rusted razor production. Composed over the last two years in various foul states, the album is a fusion of base level hardware programming, open room mic recordings and extensive computer processing, all finalized in the Paris studio of KRIKOR KOUCHIAN. Compositionally, Morelli has fused the brute immediacy of his then-controversial now-cult debut album Spit with intricate compositional cut-ups of cassette culture, the updated crushing production the product of having circled and lived Europe's nightclub circuit for close to a decade. Presented here as a double LP with new artwork, re-sequenced and edited from its original cassette format.

***Hospital Productions finally compile some of MATTHEW FOLDEN, aka DUAL ACTION's most sought-after material, a set of forays into distorted ambient, mutant house, and jungle—even grime and footwork variants—as released on his hard-to-find Babe, Beer, Bar, and Car tapes, issued between 2014-2016 and compiled here for the first time on vinyl. A core figure on PRURIENT's label, Folden has appeared on numerous and seminal Prurient recordings including the demo version of the groundbreaking Bermuda Drain album (2011), the final tape recordings made at the original hospital productions brick and mortar store as Prurient's Oxidation (2012), and the new released seven-LP of doom electronics Rainbow Mirror. Babe Beer Bar Car takes in signature sluggers that sound like The Haters gone house, through to rolling D&B and footwork rhythms fringing on the grey area, each half-lit by patented atmospheric pollutants. The set builds a murky picture of a character who spends long nights with his drum machine—it's hard to shift the feeling that this is the kind of music—numbly expressive, rudimentary and bluntly driven by urges that someone befitting of the great American lounge-lizard/drifter stereotype might make, or at least listen to, after dark. It's a quintessentially Hospital Productions sound—deeply satisfying in its mix of black humor laced with flashes of demonic genius.

On Bunkerterror, Vatican Shadow and Ancient Methods finally yield two exclusive industrial techno tracks, both offering unrelenting examples of their notorious b2b live/DJ shows from the past 12 months.  Vatican Shadow bosses the ‘New York’ side with Monotheism & Zarqa, offering the VS sound at its most willing and able with stomping kicks piling thru sheets of shuddering white noise. It’s quite possibly the most deadly and dancefloor-dedicated cut in his cabinet of horrors - proper industrial cynicism!  The ‘Berlin’ side belongs to Ancient Methods’ Immured In Supreme Beliefs, a perfectly rictus example of his pitch black war funk, finding intense pleasure in the near-refusal of syncopation, save for pendulous ice pick snares that nail the groove perfectly off centre.  For legion industrial fiends this record is a dream come true. Arriving in Hospital Productions’ 20th anniversary year, it demonstrates the label diversifying and specifying their bonds...

***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!!  PHASE FATALE creates techno from disparate subcultures of dead industrial with a post-punk spirit, bringing back an immediacy and aggressive energy sorely missing in the contemporary electronic landscape. With Redeemer, the debut full-length from Phase Fatale, conceived by DJ and producer HAYDEN PAYNE in New York by way of Berlin, deepens his exploration of the tension—both sonic and conceptual—which begun on his EPs released over the last three years on the Jealous God and Unterton labels. In intent and impact, Phase Fatale bears allegiance to the surreal influence of Juan Mendez, aka Silent Servant, with whom Payne has worked closely in collaboration. A defining trait of Payne's music is his ability to reconcile and integrate the underground character of his past into a precise story on the dancefloor. His subtle incorporation of guitars and vocals never make way for disclaimers or apology. They puncture the face of the mix or recede into the latticework of the sequence, always stalking the perimeter. While maintaining a cold energy that isn't begot with nostalgia, he edits and extracts the essence of his influences into an unapologetic future. His malaise is repurposed for the degenerated present—in his atmospheric universe of minimalist/maximal percussion. On Redeemer, Payne raises a palpable question tracing the circumference somewhere between the despair and liberation one feels standing at the precipice of cynical ecstasy. This is a techno album, but one that is refreshingly punk.

***RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT is the ambient techno project of DOMINICK FERNOW. Focusing on slow paced bass studies and synthetic dub textures, surrounded by collaged and looped field recording environments, RSE shrouds sound over image to target the sector of brain where fear supersedes rationality—the imagination. As RSE appears live for the first time, it has transformed into an entity with rotating contributors on stage and on recording.Ambient Black Magic moves away from the extreme saturation of the early cassettes and the industrial environmentalism of Green Graves (2016), and defines itself simply as contemporary "fear/chill-out" dub. The new album Ambient Black Magic features sound-on-sound processing by SILENT SERVANT, a massive dub remix from SUBSTANCE, and mastering by PAUL CORLEY. The debut live performance of Fernow's most restrained project will feature studies in bass and field recording environments.

***DOMINICK FERNOW's VATICAN SHADOW returns with a new double-pack for his own Hospital Productions imprint following on from the recent Rubbish Of The Floodwaters 12" for Ostgut Ton. Luxor Necropolitics was once again produced by JOSHUA EUSTIS of Telefon Tel Aviv, and it includes a super rare remix from FEMALE of Sandwell District fame. Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, this is the most substantial Vatican Shadow release since 2016's Media In The Service Of Terror LP and further develops Fernow's creative collaboration with Eustis, who provides a much more lean and dynamic sheen to those highly atmospheric foundations. The opening, title track provides evocative exposition; this is Vatican Shadow at its most cinematic and unreal; before "Intel War" jolts with increased propulsion and bass pressure and a killer soundsystem focus deployed with precision and depth. "Crown Prince Hamza" is much more squashed and feral, before a new "Red Headband" version of "More Of The Same" takes the original into even more anthemic terrain; this is surely the most memorable, enduring, and club-focused Vatican Shadow track of all. As if to further etch it on your mind, the vinyl edition offers a final exclusive track, a reworking of "More Of The Same" from Female, who takes the original and duffs it up, completely discarding that synth hook and instead intensifying the menace, heading down a Sandwell-shaped cave that will reminds you why you've loved pretty much every Female production. Edition of 700.

“Marking their 20th anniversary year, Hospital Productions mete out a brutal package of “violent riot brut noise” by Quebecois artist Pierre-Marc Tremblay, aka Âmes Sanglantes and the mighty Contrepoison, among other titles. A regular fixture on the label this decade, Âmes effectively tops all of his previous work with the sore and and often overwhelming tract of new, previously unreleased material contained in Crackdown. For those brave souls willing to submit to this grimoir of spellbinding noise expression, you will be rewarded in spades of of material, enough to sully a full working day or night spent in its company and effectively gird yourself for a potential summer of civil unrest.Quite patently this set is not meant for the Hospital Productions dilettante or noise hypochondriac; Crackdown is uncompromising in its vision and remorseless after contact - an unflinching body of material awaiting undivided attention.”—Boomkat

“Hospital Productions weigh out 8 hours of incredible, eerie industrial electronics from Max Gudmunson’s Dust Belt, one of the more nuanced, atmospherically charged projects to emerge from under the label’s vast wings. Sitting through a good chunk of this late at night was an experience not too dissimilar to watching the first two episodes of new Twin Peaks in an isolated room - highly unsettling but tinged with nocturnal beauty.Gudmonson has formerly appeared in a number of guises on Hospital as part of Virgin Spring, Virile Games, and K.P., the latter of whom also issued an 8-tape boxset in 2010. Committed to and For The Species Refusing To Consume, Dust Belt’s steeply immersive collection offers a working day’s worth of dark ambient flocking that will make the walls seem to melt and grow towards the listener when experienced under durational absorption. There’s an other energy guiding Gudmunson’s hand here, offering him up as a cadaverous vessel channelling sensations from a next dimension, which he diffuses into a spectral tableaux of intermeshed field recordings and synth strokes revealed with a slow, keen sense of noirish mystery and visceral body-horror intrigue. If you're into anything from Deathprod to Lynch to SAWII, this one comes hugely recommended.”—Boomkat

“One of Hospital Productions’ key players commits a staggering corpus of new, unreleased work to the label’s 20th anniversary festivities with Standstill, adding to his illustrious string of label highlights from the last five years such as American Babylon [2012] and Industriale Illuminato [2014]. By some distance the quietest, most contemplative character on the label, Lussuria’s exquisite atmospheric sensitivity and ritualistic patience is in full effect across this breathtaking boxset.Where other, more orthodox noise makers on Hospital Productions are all about exothermic reaction and violence, Lussuria applies a sort of endothermic induction with the poised, relative stasis of Standstill working like a series of seductive glances caught in a well cut jewel, rather than any sort of staring match or outright violenze. If pushed to pick any from this stunning run of new Hospital Productions, the 8-tape Standstill collection is definitely one that we’ll be devoting time to in the sanctity of our personal listening space for a long time to come.Hugely recommended!”—Boomkat

“While all of Dominick Fernow’s work is driven by a sense of puristic, tortured expression, his Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement output renders some of the most diffusive, abstract and enigmatic thoughts and feelings in his entire catalogue. Where his other projects are known for intensely saturated sound design, RSE dwells in fathoms of stark negative space; conjuring a rare and arcane kind of acousmatic magick that massages the temples and squeezes open the third eye thru its textured tonal sensitivity and heartrate-slowing temporal pressure, as opposed to anything explicitly aggressive or panic-inducing.Collated as a sort of book of spells - Water Witches works best thru dedicated solo immersion and absorption - just as you would imagine with a mescaline or ayahuasca trip deep in the jungle - only with less physical sickness and actual mosquitos. Although you’re likely to encounter the sounds of parakeets, tarantula wasps and other hallucinatory creatures and tribes populating its dense drone canopies and humid, decaying surfaces.Do not treat this release lightly, and it will reward you manifold in return. Cross its path the wrong way, in a narrow frame of mind, however, and you’re almost certain to get irretrievably lost amid its plasmic moire of recursive energy channels and unidentified spectres, because you’ll find there’s few souls willing to come and repatriate your quickly rotting cadaver from this devil’s lung of mental mantraps. The set collates in their remastered entirety the following releases - Fallen Leaves Camouflaged Behind Tropical Flowers, Green Amulet Crafts Supernatural Qualities, Taking Place...

L’eternité Retrouvée by Vilains Bonshommes

Vilains Bonshommes

L’eternité Retrouvée
Hospital Productions

***Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions hail the obscure, transfixing poetry and exquisite gothic pall of Vilains Bonshommes; a Rimbaud-inspired duo including members of Canada’s Contrepoison and Norwegian BM group, Mare. Éternité Retrouvée (2011) was first released as a cassette on Norway’s Fossbrenna Creations and remains the duo’s only available output. Apparently a further album was promised, yet never manifested, which only serves to heighten the mystery of this one; their lone, exceptional iteration. Stripped to the bare essentials of drum machine, analog synth and vocals rendered in acres of sepulchral space, the 3-track EP draws listeners into a flawlessly realised sphere of dark influence where minimalist, desiccated harmonies and bony rhythms are embedded against unfathomably bombed out, maximalist backdrops - what most would define as unmistakably gothic. Poised, arch and evoking a sense of clutching power from the jaws of despair, the EP’s three tracks speak to life’s loneliest but formative experiences both literally, through the use of Rimbaud’s tortured poetry in the sagging heave of L’Éternité, and metaphorically, through economically authentic sound design in the dirges of Death Shines On Triumphant Days and The Ages Anew which both suspend the listener by icy hooks at the core of it all. It’s a perfect example of the dark imagination’s ability to bypass common sense and broach the depths of the soul...

***Following on from that hugely sought-after Green Graves issue by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement (2016), Hospital Productions re-examine a longstanding tradition of industrial ambient music on this exceptional collaboration between two of the label's most consistently innovative, highly absorbing producers. Originally released in a private press run of handmade tapes in 2016, the collaboration was made in person with both Alberich and Lussuria making use of digital synths in homage to that distinctly European scene of the mid '90s that combined hardcore industrial textures with ambient pulses. It's a sound you'll be familiar with if you've immersed yourself in the most unnervingly quiet sections of the last few Prurient albums, building a kind of futuristic soundscape situated somewhere between David Lynch, Kevin Drumm, and a more dystopian variant of Brad Fiedel's distinctive soundtrack to The Terminator (1984). Alberich's instinct for harsh propulsive rhythms is tempered here by Lussuria's weird topography, the digital rendering adding a kind of artificial foundation quite removed from the throbbing earthiness you'd find on a hardware session. Instead, the more linear trajectory of so many dark ambient excursions is replaced with a constantly shifting landscape, veering from an oddly displaced vocal narrative into pounded, crumbling rhythms at some points, while those sinking sub bass sands keep things resolutely atmospheric for the duration. There are no concessions to that blackened aesthetic here, if you were into Green Graves or want to immerse yourself in one of the most brutally atmospheric albums you'll hear this year, check this out....

Contrepoison

Discography 2010-2012
Hospital Productions

***Hospital Productions collect some of the strongest cold-wave pop dirges of a generation with CONTREPOISON's Discography 2010-2012 survey, wrapping up both his self-released tapes and releases for Dominick Fernow's cherished imprint. Since the late '90s, Québécois musician and noise artist PIERRE MARC-TREMBLAY has been recognized as a vital force in nether musical realms with a palette ranging from hermetic black metal (AKITSA) to the bitterest rhythmic noise (ÂMES SANGLANTES), and, more recently, the nerve-bitingly melodic pop of Contrepoison, whose I Keep On Searching 12" (2012)—included here—is a firm fixture. Arriving at the vanguard of a new slew of cold-wave revisionists and fetishists in 2010, his music stood, and still stands, head and shoulders above the rest thanks to an incessant drive and directness that can't be ignored by anyone into the original stuff, or who has arrived via the sound's prevailing, contemporary winds. Vacillating belting vocal pop arrangements with howling, stygian instrumentals of synth, guitar and enslaved drum machines, Discography 2010-2012 drags a perfectly malformed body of work. Dominick Fernow (Prurient/Vatican Shadow) is your shaman for a jaw-dropping journey into the heart of dark, rhythmic ambient music with Green Graves. For the past five years, RSE’s rare flora has quietly unfurled as Fernow’s most reclusive, abstract and unpredictable alter ego, feted for a deeply psychedelic sensuality that sets it apart from practically all his other works, and almost anyone else beyond certain Plastikman, Coil or Demdike Stare records, for that matter. While entirely instrumental, it also proves to be one of Dominick Fernow’s most expressive outlets; a few thousand miles from Prurient, and more arid than Vatican Shadow, a place where his mind turns primal, panther like, stalking thru the undergrowth of his ambient nether worlds. Perhaps most arresting is the sense of scale of his pressure systems, maintaining a heady flux between physical bass and persistent, warm downpours in the 15 minute opener Return Of Yellow Herb Ambient, whereas Watery Grave leans back on a breezy sort of boogie pivot maybe best compared with Actress or NWAQ, and the perfectly portentous title of When Spotted They Are Killed On Sight is matched by the track’s clammy, petrifying nature. If willing to travel farther, we find some of Fernow’s most layered, even luxuriant harmonic arrangements and poised drum programming in Red Protection Against Black Magic, and the closest he’s come to cinematic detailing with Crustaceans Rise From Salt Water For Vengeance, and we find a possible clue to the project’s esoteric, tribal and anachronistic roots in the head-...

Appropriation Stories
Hospital Productions

***GUY ALEXANDER BREWER, aka SHIFTED, is involved in several projects taking in techno, noise and experimental electronics overlaying a once-hidden past in drum'n'bass. Having shunned his previous work in COMMIX, more recently Brewer has learned to look back, even making sideways stabs into breakbeat territory with his COVERED IN SAND alias. The process grows more intricate and subtle on Appropriation Stories. On Appropriation Stories, rigorous processing and studio treatments transform classic breaks into deeply hidden components that add new layers of character to his highly-developed techno sound. At first presenting itself as a dense wall-of-sound underpinned by an incessant pulse, Appropriation Stories at length reveals itself to be a much more complex work. In place of the stark minimalism, razor-sharp digital textures and smeared analog surfaces of his previous output, Brewer offers layered tracks with intricate mixes that reveal themselves gradually over time.

Media In The Service Of Terror
Hospital Productions

***DOMINICK FERNOW laces up his VATICAN SHADOW boots for the project's first set of drills since 2014 and one of its finest ever transmissions, trampling in the wake of his fierce new PRURIENT record, Unknown Rains (2016), for Hospital Productions. Reflecting on a world much unchanged, even intensified since his last dispatch, Media In The Service Of Terror works classic Vatican Shadow signatures, measured with increased momentum and propulsive energy, divided into seven parts and imbued with that dramatic melodic arrangements that works beyond the club. Stepping farther away from the floor, he's in scowling, contemplative form with "Ziad Jarrah Studied Mathematics" and at his best when working between spheres, as with the industrial reggaeton roil of "Take Vows" in both its versions, and particularly the pensile atmosphere of "Interrogation Mosaic." One of the best Vatican Shadow drops, bar none. Originally released as a limited cassette in June of 2016, this is Media In The Service Of Terror's first vinyl edition. Features new artwork. ***A vinyl issue of PRURIENT's Unknown Rains, originally released as a limited edition cassette in 2016. Utterly destructive and heart-wrenching power noise and catharsis from the don gorgon of Hospital Productions, making his first album confession since the release of the stunning Frozen Niagara Falls (2015). Taking almost 40 minutes to spell-out a litany of ills that mark up as classic, pain-saturated Prurient in contrast with the more layered, nuanced narrative and more complex production values of his last album, the set boots-off with the infernal backdraft and flagellating vox of the album's most succinct piece, "Let Your Mind Free (Whip The Corpse)". Sharp blasts of noise distortion conceal a forlorn Fernow vocal, like that classic Lynchian conceit of obscuring dialogue at the most crucial moment, perversely enhancing narrative through obstruction. It's a brilliant, disturbing, opener. Sore chord progressions and those same distanced vox crushed by needling distortion fill the nine minutes of "Before Rain Becomes Snow" with much emotional impact; revealing a sort of disturbed and buried shoegaze appeal that sounds like a Grouper x Prurient recording session from another dimension. However, the album's most captivating track comes with the gaping black-holer, "In The Ruins Of My Brother"—where the distortion dissipates to the edges, allowing vast blooming bass flares and slithering high registers to wrap around the neck with a spacious, full-spectrum dominance that recalls Prurient's Pleasure Ground classic, before "Red Poppy Laughter" slips back into an opiated sort of naval-gazing noise bliss.

***A Gathering Together is RON MORELLI's second full-length for Hospital Productions: a ‘techno’ cacophony brought to its granular detail and reduced to its most elemental tonal depths. A cohesive fusion of surreal and feverish deja vu loops, brittle noise, fucked rhythms, scrap metal percussions, pro-one metal synths, and an injection of near-buried, Drano vocal samples, it’s a fearsome celebration of brokenness, of amplified surroundings. Stereo-shifting drones and driving rhythms that tell the stories of those now gone, more a soundtrack for a wake than 4/4 crafted for the dancefloor. There’s a naked anxiety at work that doesn’t turn away from loss, but runs with an excited melancholy that looks to a future that won’t exist. The boldness of the gestures are not to be confused with exuberance. With this effort Morelli has shown remarkable restraint and patience most notably highlighted on title track ‘A Gathering Together.’ An intense cut born from rapid-paced dead-end urban environments that force people together. It’s a calling to do more, include more, and celebrate the many forms within those inconspicuous places. Upon numerous listens, it’s clear the sound design is a reflection of heavy compositional themes that suggest a greater whole. This is hard, dirty techno--humid, reduced, bare bones, yet dense and dissolved to its electronic soil. Heavy without being oppressive, it is the culmination of many elements pulled from all spheres of modern electronics, eaten, digested, and spit back out. Produced at the end of 2014, with final mixdown and additional production in spring...

Industriale Illuminato by Lussuria

Lussuria

Industriale Illuminato
Hospital Productions

One of the most intriguing artists on the Hospital Productions roster, Lussuria came to prominence with the release of three tapes as part of the ‘American Babylon’ series in 2012 which were eventually compiled into a double vinyl edition last year. His opiated atmospheres brought together the ritualistic appeal of late ‘70s and early ‘80s Italian industrial music crossed with the claustrophobia of early material from The Cure and the decadent, voyeuristic compulsion of Pasolini flicks so enamoured by Coil.   Having been in the works through late 2013 and in post-production for several months since, ‘Industriale Illuminato’ is in some respects the first release by Lussuria conceived as a standalone album, and is perhaps his most unique, unsettling body of work to date.  Inspired by Deconstructionism and an overriding sense of anxiety, the album revolves around the dislocated narrative of album opener ‘Boneblack’, a dense and evocative fade into shadowy realms inspired by composer Giacinto Scelsi and the enigmatic mind-tricks of Alain Resnais’ ‘Last Year at Marienbad’.  ‘Petra Marina’ sees Lussuria use real drum sounds alongside electronic ones for the first time, layered through with odd, foreboding drones constructed out of handmade Japanese music boxes, feedback manipulation and mangled tape loops which together sound like an industrial, shadowy counterpart to the hazy nostalgia of Boards of Canada.  ‘Venus In Retrograde’ was inspired by and evokes the paranoid narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’, making use of snatches of barely tangible dialogue to form an unnerving backdrop, before ‘Breath Of Cinder’ brings...

Comprised of eight tracks, Periscope Blues is the culmination of a mission gone wrong. Music for the stranded, the lost, those backed into a corner with nowhere to go, or maybe a reflection of sad individuals panicking on a tropical vacation gone awry. Somber yet very tense drifting off radar machine electronics that feel like a blistering sun beating down on decaying beach remains as time crawls on. That or the equivalent to working the grill summers at Jones Beach and stealing from the register just to get a little more...

Ron Morelli returns to stare down the ‘floor with four pieces written during the stress-busting sessions for ‘Spit’. The muggy, droning welt of ‘Public Consumption’ kicks off with the sound of New York techno shot from the hip, while ‘Another Hit’ vents a vintage era-Regis style built on skull-chipping snares and effluent acid modulation. The album’s writhing batacuda banger, ‘Crack Microbes’ reappears here as an extra-ferric extended Version, sustaining the hypnotic intensity for nine minutes of panic attack acid and febrile cowbells, while ‘’Rushing Again’ escorts us to a close with triplet techno shook down by railgun snares and a grotty synthline.

***When You Are Crawling is a 35-minute companion piece to VATICAN SHADOW’s recently released Remember Your Black Day album, the iconography and tracklisting concluding its narrative, with a musical focus more directly aimed at the club bolstered by additional production from JUAN MENDEZ aka SILENT SERVANT. The centerpiece of the EP is "Atta's Apartment Slated for Demolition (Bouthayna Engineering)," a previously-unreleased 15-minute production that builds from tempered percussion to a more driving denouement. The EP also includes the previously-unreleased "Al Qaeda," plus an alternate version of the album's title-track. Mastered and cut by MATT COLTON.

***There’s so much that could be said about RON MORELLI, his L.I.E.S. label, or the fact that his debut album comes to you via Hospital Productions, but instead, here are some words from the man himself. “I’m a regular guy, enjoy a good steak, drinking beer, and occasionally a game of pro basketball, Republican talk radio... you know...all the good stuff.....” “The music on this record is about immediacy, pressure, monotony and stress. A great deal of the feelings conveyed within come from the fear and repulsion of basic human interaction....like if someone sitting behind you on the plane sneezes on you or being forced to shake the clamy hand of a stranger and the intimate paranoias of the mind and dealing with it or not. Not to make some deep intellectual fuck show of this, as it is not...it’s just stress music...jammed out quick and recorded. Last year, I was staying in an area where all the hookers did their work...all they would do is smoke cigarettes, read the paper, talk on their cell phones, and spit. They would spit...A LOT. I would step in that hooker spit on the way home, often tracking it into the apartment building as I entered. This is where the title of the record comes from.”

Remember Your Black Day by Vatican Shadow

Vatican Shadow

Remember Your Black Day
Hospital Productions

***Remember Your Black Day is the debut album proper from VATICAN SHADOW, the first material conceived and produced as a full-length by DOMINICK FERNOW for the project following almost a dozen tapes (mostly released on Hospital Productions) and vinyl editions (released by the likes of Blackest Ever Black, Modern Love, and Type) over the last three years. None of the eight tracks included have been released before on any other format. At a time when the scene is saturated with "noise techno," the album is almost celebratory by contrast, balancing caustic licks of distortion and oppressive bass with cleanly mixed synth tones and ricocheting claps in a shell-shocked, surreal soundsphere. With production assistance from JUAN MENDEZ (SILENT SERVANT), the album includes the most direct and propulsive Vatican Shadow material yet, continuing an evolutionary shift away from the complex, collage-based narrative of those cassette releases into more visibly direct contact with the listener. There is a functional connection to dance music here, honing in on the human element embedded within a subject matter so fraught with inhumanity.
