***With her ethereal voice laid majestically over myriad ambitious harmonies built with synthesizers and looping pedals, LARISSA LOYVA’s sophomore album is a looming presence on the horizon of the Canadian music scene. While critics adored her work with P:ANO, THE CHOIR PRACTICE and on her lauded 2008 debut Flamingo, KELLARISSA (Finnish for "in the basement") bares her soul more honestly and nakedly than ever on her epic opus Moon of Neptune. Recorded with producer/synthesizer enthusiast JOSH STEVENSON at Otic Sound from June to November of 2010, with additional drum programming by CERTAIN BREED’s DAVE REYNOLDS, this unique album took shape during the aftermath of a long-term relationship. Others might not have undertook such a project at such a vulnerable time, but Larissa embraced this opportunity to channel her energy into being productive and reconnecting with her first love. Her lyrics and inflections betray her tribulations, while her songwriting reveals her influences, including her Scandinavian heritage, films, ancient Egypt, Nico, outer space, and eccentric Australian designer, Florence Broadhurst (1899–1977), whose artwork graces the cover of the album. Though the weight of transmutation hangs heavy over much of the album, there are moments of triumph and extroversion. The organ may lend a somber quality to "Sisu" and its Finnish lyrics, but a translation unveils a story of resistance, having the chutzpah to persevere despite hardship. Running almost seven minutes, "Niagara" captures the space and nature themes running through the record, with Loyva's delayed vocals solemnly proclaiming the end of the world over a...

1996 Vancouver punk band's only full-length album, 21 minutes in length, notable primarily for being Neko Case's debut as a lead vocalist, although her loud, punk-rock singing on this project is not typical of her later style. Case shares lead vocal duties with bandmates Tobey Black and Corrina Hammond. Many of the songs are about partying. The album's best-known song/music video, "Ms. Lefevre", celebrates the character "Renee Lefebvre" from Woody Allen's movie What's New, Pussycat? Also includes covers of songs by Wanda Jackson ("Mean Mean Mean") and Nancy Sinatra ("How Does That Grab You?").

Basically it's a local album in every city. Down home country singing and songs. Like Neko, this girl can belt it out, with style and charm to spare.

***CAROLYN MARK and N.Q. ARBUCKLE are cooperators, consensus builders, confederates and collaborators. Having worked together back in 2005 on the track, “Fireworks,” for another of Carolyn's collective recording projects, Just Married: An Album of Duets, they were not alone in noticing that there was some, for lack of a better word, "magic" there and decided to reunite in 2009 for Let’s Just Stay Here. Joining the team for this outing were some of Arbuckle's favorite co-conspirators (aka his band) including The KESPER Twins, PETER (guitars) and MARK (drums) as well as JOHN DINSMORE (bass, wine glasses, charm), as well as guest CORB LUND (mandolin), LILY FAWN (musical saw), JENNY WHITELEY (harmonies) and MIRANDA MULLHOLLAND (violin). Of the twelve songs, six are originals by Mark, thre are originals by Arbuckle and the remaining three are covers chosen for the important places they occupy in each musician's personal cosmology. LP includes a download.

***THE PACK A.D. could be anti-social outcasts who have trust issues or they could just be honest to a fault. When we live in a world of social networking where people offer up mundane details masked as intimacy to "friends" and "acquaintances" alike, where everyone looks like everyone and everyone can do everything... what's left? Following through on 2008's devastating one-two punch (January's Tintype and August's Funeral Mixtape), we kill computers is The Pack a.d.'s third album and it marks a bold departure away from the blues and headfirst into straight up garage rock/pop/punk. Recorded live off the floor to analog tape at Hive Studios in Vancouver by JESSE GANDER (Japandroids, Bison b.c.) and then mastered at GhettoRecorders in Detroit by JIM DIAMOND (Dirtbombs, Detroit Cobras), We Kill Computers is a rapid fire assault of 13 heavy, heavy songs. When The Pack a.d. plays a show they hand the audience their guts. That's why We Kill Computers, a full year in the making, captures that same live energy—fierce, unapologetic, and loud as hell. Lyrically, The Pack a.d. offers up their general mistrust of humans and their motives, while tipping off that animals have got it right. Sonically charged and relentless, The Pack a.d. don't play a song so much as attack it—and we kill computers is them coming at you at a run. LP pressed on 180-gram vinyl and includes a download.

***“We hear a lot about Brooklyn, Montreal and San Francisco, but think Vancouver’s music community is the best around. The CiTR/Mint Pop Alliance Compilation is just that—a snapshot of our rainy city on a Friday night in 2011. It features 11 prominent local bands including NO KIDS, KELLARISSA (P:ANO, THE CHOIR PRACTICE), FINE MIST, SLAM DUNK, APOLLO GHOSTS and many more. The songs, labour, mastering and artwork were donated and proceeds from the record will benefit CiTR 101.9 FM, the campus radio station where Mint Records began. Tiny trimmings from CiTR’s Duncan McHugh’s beard and Mint Shena’s cat’s hair were mixed into the molten vinyl during the manufacturing process (Not really. But you get the picture, this record was made possible by several people with a lot of love).” Hand-numbered edition of 300 copies pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

Named after Vancouver pioneer Captain John Deighton who got his nickname "Gassy" from talking non stop rather than farting, The Evaporators new release will attempt to school you the listener on how to Shake with the Shaggy Shaker and how to do the Eggbeater.
