Baptized In Goat Blood by Bafomet

Bafomet

Baptized In Goat Blood
Nuclear War Now

***Japan’s BAFOMET formed in the year 2015, but the spirit of their music belongs resolutely in the 1980s. Originally called Sigil of Bafomet, this Saikano trio plays satanic black speed metal in the tradition of the first wave of black metal bands, and does so with a seemingly effortless expertise. On Baptized in Goat Blood, Bafomet shred their way through eleven anthems of true evil metal, with a speed and ferocity rarely heard in modern black metal. The guitar work is razor sharp, the drums relentless, and the bass/vocal onslaught from one Vladphemer the Sodomizer leaves a bloody trail in its wake. Standing firmly in league with fellow countrymen Abigail and Sabbat and recalling the early works of Venom and Bathory, Baptized in Goat Blood keeps the spirit of true black metal alive. First pressing of 250 copies on orange splatter vinyl. Includes 12-inch insert and A3 poster.

Vengeance From Darkness by Death Yell

Death Yell

Vengeance From Darkness
Nuclear War Now

***In the 1980s, South America produced some of the most legendary extreme metal in the genre’s history. While the renowned Brazilian scene undoubtedly cast a long shadow, like minded maniacs in regions like Colombia and Chile were simultaneously creating their own brand of black/death metal. Among the pioneers of the Chilean scene, DEATH YELL stands out as a founding group, and NWN! Productions is proud to present an official reissue of their legendary 1989 demo Vengeance From Darkness. Formed in 1988 in Santiago (after a stint under the name Pestilence), Death Yell played thrashing death metal with a manic intensity with clear influences from Brazilian maniacs such as Sarcofago, Sextrash and Mutilator, with a punk energy that brings to mind Extreme Noise Terro and the UK grind scene. Instrumentally proficient and sonically violent, Death Yell creates a controlled chaos that marries its deathrash roots with a macabre, funerary atmosphere replete with sinister, lurching organ work. Vengeance From Darkness was self-financed and self-released as a cassette by the band, gaining a legendary status in tape trading circles at the time. The prestige of this demo led to some of its tracks being reused on a split 7” with Beherit via Turbo Music in 1991, and another 7” titled Morbid Rites on Seraphic Decay Records in 1992. The band would remain dormant until their reactivation in 2012.

***Sarcasm began in Slovenia in 1987. The teenage trio of Ales Blaznik (guitar), Sandi Dolinar (bass) and Matjaz Kacin (drums) began their career playing heavy metal covers, their first being Slayer’s “Black Magic”. After gigging in their hometown of Kranj, Sarcasm started writing their own songs and added the vocal talents of Osim Cehic, aka Paco. Their initial demos were recorded in 1988 and garnered positive reactions from the Yugoslavian metal community. With the addition of second guitarist Matjaz Hudobivnik later that year, Sarcasm became one of the leading names in the nascent Slovenian metal scene, opening for Motöread and counting the likes of Destruction among their fans. Crematory is the first official full-length from Sarcasm. Originally released on cassette by the band in 1989, this record is a milestone in both eastern European metal and '80s thrash in general. Lightning fast and deftly executed, Sarcasm's attack recalls the best of pure '80s speed with a tonal grounding in classic heavy metal. The guitar work of Blaznik and Hudobivnik is razor sharp, with unreal twin harmonies and truly mind-bending solos (see “The Krueger Story”, for example). Paco’s vocal stylings pay homage to the early works of Tom Araya while remaining unique in their deliberate application. A classic in Slovenia, Crematory belongs in the international canon of classic thrash metal.

Satan Soldier of Fortune by Departure Chandelier

Departure Chandelier

Satan Soldier of Fortune
Nuclear War Now

***With their second album, Satan Soldier of Fortune, Departure Chandelier weave in reverse order the process of Napoleonic battlefield cleanup against self-coronation and the emperor’s ascent to deity whom profited off the fallen of both sides. While the dying are stripped naked to fertilize the countryside, boots and teeth are hurriedly taken for sale in Paris. Blood soaked coins fill the grave robber’s purse, the jangling song heard all the way to Notre Dame. Against the backdrop of the throne Illuminated by the bivouac fires, fallen men, horses and cannon wagons churn like twisted celtic knots across the sea of the battlefield as the coronation begins. Dressed in the gown of swarming Merovingian bees, a wreath of laurel arched above his skull, the Regent diamond flashes in the hilt of the Antichrist’s saber encrusted on the gold scepter—rising in his hand, yet unable to support the weight of Charlemagne’s crown. What is dark if Lucifer’s light? Compositionally wild but rich in melody, the band’s unique combination of perched guitars and impending choral keyboards beneath raw unhinged vocals spearheading lyrics of existential rebellion captures the necro sound of old French black metal. The arrangements are shorn of needless complexity, yet greater than the sum of their parts purportedly recorded on the same 4-track with the old distortions and synths used on Antichrist Rise To Power now immortalized on their Occult Antiquities imprint. Indeed, nearly five years in the making, Their Death Is Alive Again!

***The history of extreme metal in Italy cannot be told without acknowledging the primacy of Fingernails. Formed in Rome, in 1981, by guitarist and songwriter Maurizio “Angus” Bidoli, they started off playing more traditional heavy metal but swiftly shifted toward speed metal before they began recording. After a few years of local gigging, they unleashed a barrage of five demos between 1984 and 1987. Like their closest sonic antecedents, Motörhead and Tank, Fingernails operated as a three-piece, eschewing gimmickry and relying instead on raw passion and unadorned instrumentation. By the time they entered the studio to record their self-titled debut for Cobra Records, they had finely tuned their sound: a lethal speedball of rock n’ roll depravity, manic thrash, punk rock recklessness, and Italian street metal sleaze, delivered with venomous precision. Accompanying Bidoli for the LP were drummer Ricky “Duracell” Lipparini, who played on the demos, and Chris Bianco—known for his work in the heavy metal band Raff. The album captures perfectly their lewd belligerence, with the debauched carnality of Bidoli’s guitars and vocals driven by the prowling, predatory aggression of the bass and drums. After its release in 1988, Cobra Records failed to pay the royalties it owed the band pursuant to their agreement, and, before long, the label went under, leaving the record under-promoted and poorly distributed. Amid the waning popularity of speed metal catalyzed by the rapid ascent of death and black metal, as well as grunge, Fingernails could not get a foothold in the scene, and...

Sex Messiah / Evil / Immortal Death

The Pact of Sex, Evil and Death - Split
Nuclear War Now

***Nuclear War Now! Productions is proud to bring together three underground Japanese metal extremists for The Pact of Sex, Evil and Death. A three-way split featuring SEX MESSIAH, EVIL and IMMORTAL DEATH, this record documents three of the most evil bands working today. Sex Messiah offers three tracks of insane bestial black metal with a sadistic recklessness that recalls “I.N.R.I.”-era Sarcofago. Frontwoman MOENOS' vocals are scathing and spectral, with two of the three tracks recorded live at NWN! Fest Vol. VI. Tokyo’s Evil follow with their unique bestial onslaught, mixing speed-obsessed ferocity with classic metal sensibilities. A standout band, Evil balances truly relentless bestial black metal against tasteful hard-rock riffing with aplomb, with pentatonic solos that bring to mind '70s Judas Priest as much as they do '80s South American black metal. Immortal Death finishes the split with twisted, necrotic death metal, once again courtesy of total maniac Moenos (Sex Messiah). With a raw production and pervasive sense of morbidity, Immortal Death mixes Atrax Morgue-style death ambience with crushing heaviness that solidifies this split as an essential document for fans of extreme music. The Pact of Sex, Evil and Death. is a worthy addition to the canon of classic metal compilations and is not to be missed. First pressing of 500 copies housed in gatefold jackets. Bestial Vociferation
Nuclear War Now

***Finland’s WITCHCRAFT have spent the past decade unleashing a series of demos and splits that feature some of the most diabolical black and death metal to emerge in years. In the vein of legends such as Beherit, Blasphemy and Barathrum, Witchcraft play raw, bestial black metal with a total devotion to darkness, from the uncompromising brutality of their music to the necrotic quality of the recordings themselves. NWN! Productions is proud to present Bestial Vociferation, a compilation of previously unreleased rehearsal and demo recordings from 2015-2018. These tracks display an unnerving ferocity from a band who does not simply mimic their influences but injects a manic intensity into the music that makes them worthy successors to the aforementioned hordes. The vocals are exceptionally barbaric, adding a thick layer of cruelty to the already violent atmosphere inherent in the music. The occasional moan of funereal organ further enhances the aura of pure evil, solidifying Witchcraft’s status as one of the most devastating bestial black metal bands today. ***Caixão (“Coffin”) boldly inserted itself into the consciousness of the underground with the release of the otherwise untitled 2020 Demo. Hailing from Portugal, Caixão is entirely the work of one man, referred to as JG, also known for his superb Fall to the Idol zine. Caixão’s debut album, like the demo, exhibits sophisticated composition and musicianship, as well as a staggering breadth of influences deftly woven together to achieve a sound both novel and rapturous. One hears in Caixão the Mediterranean majesty of bands like Varathron, Rotting Christ, Zemial, Kawir, early Moonspell, and Mortuary Drape; the tropical occultism of Mystifier; the hypnotic northern coldness of Beherit and Black Crucifixion; and the outsider unorthodoxy of Master’s Hammer, Root, and Sigh. While this list of prominent names might seem to be too crowded to provide any meaningful sense of Caixão’s sound, it is nevertheless accurate. Caixão’s deepest influences arguably come from outside of music and, for that matter, all the trappings of modernity. One of black metal’s unique traits is how it synthesizes the ancient and the contemporary, harnessing atavistic impulses in the service of a sound that is decidedly modern. “The past is alive” is an axiom upon which the entire genre was conceived. Inspired by the remnants of lost civilizations whose natures remain mysterious, cultural emanations from thousands of years ago form the thematic core of Caixão. The title of the album, Knaga, comes from a language used by Iron Age settlers in the southern part of Iberia. It is...

Paying for Everything
Nuclear War Now

***"Formed in 1985, Магнит evolved from playing prog rock covers of classical pieces to energetic hard rock and, finally, to the relentless power metal of their lone vinyl release, Dies Irae. Following that album, in 1989, the band underwent a schism, and for a while there were two parallel bands operating under that name. Alexander Bobrov, the visionary founder of Магнит, assembled a new group of musicians and recorded a follow-up album called Платим за всё, which was first issued as a reel-to-reel tape in 1990 under the Магнит name, but changed it to Кредо for the vinyl edition. Formally released in 1991 by the Russian Disc label, Платим за всё, the only Кредо album, was by far the most ambitious and technically proficient recording in the Магнит/ Кредо catalog. It represents the culmination of the band’s output, traversing the full spectrum of its sound. Sophisticated guitar and keyboard work permeate the record, with lengthy instrumental passages showcasing the superb musicianship. Платим за всё is not an empty display of virtuosity, however. The presentation of their technical abilities was not an end unto itself; rather, it was simply a tool employed when necessary to achieve a grander vision. Кредо demonstrated remarkable compositional talent, deftly shifting styles and drawing upon the full palate of the band’s influences and a sprawling panoply of musical genres: heavy power metal, often approaching the outer bounds of speed metal; frenetic and complex instrumental prog-rock passages with classical-inspired soloing, symphonic keyboards, and operatic singing; plaintive vocal...

Detective (Детектив)
Nuclear War Now

***Though best known for their magnificent but obscure 1988 album День Гнева, the Soviet band Магнит’s earlier recordings show them in transition as they adopted a heavier sound and moved away from the prog-rock covers of classical pieces on their first self-titled recording. Amid the decline in popularity of classical music and the increasing influence of Western rock ushered in by the opening of the Soviet Union through Gorbachev’s glasnost reforms, Магнит set aside the classical covers in favor of highly technical, melodic hard rock and power metal compositions. Owing to their original release on reel-to-reel tape, the band’s two EP-length recordings from 1987, Детектив (Detective) and Слушай рок (Listen to Rock), were practically lost until their release on CD earlier this year by the Russian label GS Productions. Though classically trained and folk-influenced, Магнит exhibited an intuitive understanding of heavy music. Featuring tempestuous riffing, incisive lead guitars, ornamental keyboard and organ, and commanding vocal performances, Детектив and Слушай рок represent some of the best Soviet hard rock of the era. Unlike many virtuosic, classically trained musicians whose embrace of rock and heavy metal appears ostentatious and pretentious, Магнит did not use rock as a mere vessel to showcase their sophistication and skill. Instead, they channeled their talent and passion into music that was simultaneously aggressive, erudite, and emotive. There is a poetic valence to Магнит’s lyrics. Even a song like “Listen to Rock,” which extols the virtues of rock music, contains lines like “The thunderous ether is shaking the...

Dies Irae (День Гнева)
Nuclear War Now

***Though active for just a few years, from 1985 to 1989, Магнит’s only full-length vinyl release, День Гнева, has since achieved cult status among fans of Soviet-era metal, bringing the band international recognition. As with most obscure rock and metal bands from the former Soviet Union, the details surrounding Магнит’s history are murky. Formed by keyboardist Alexander Bobrov, who primarily acted as the band’s art director and only occasionally performed on the recordings, Магнит evolved out of the Фантазия ensemble, which was associated with the Moscow Philharmonic and, since the mid-1970s, played traditional folk music before gravitating toward more popular sounds. Магнит emerged in 1985 as a symphonic rock band, performing renditions of classical pieces by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Bartok, Prokofiev and Frescobaldi. The earliest incarnation of the band featured three keyboard players, accompanied by a guitarist, bassist, and drummer, all of whom were classically trained. Through the patronage of the Belgorod Philharmonic Society in St. Petersburg, Магнит recorded their first self-titled recording, consisting entirely of classical music played in something of a prog-rock style, which they self-released on reel-to-reel tape—then a common format in the Soviet Union. By that time, however, classical music’s popularity was on the decline as contemporary styles were gaining cultural momentum, causing Магнит to pivot toward a heavier rock sound, shedding and replacing some former members in the process. (All told, more than a dozen musicians contributed to the band during its brief existence.) In 1987, Магнит released Детектив (Detective), a four-song...

The album opens with a sprawling 12 minute track of atmospheric bestiality—the persistent and repetitive nature of which immediately casts a disorienting, hypnotic shroud upon the listener before culminating in a swirling and surreal display of the variegated hues of cataclysmic Luciferian splendor. Filling the interstitial spaces between the band’s hypnotic and opaque deathscapes are otherworldly electronic drone interludes punctuated by convulsive outbursts of Death/Grind violence such that the entire album dilates and contracts with cosmic grandeur. ***REISSUED!!! Stillbirth Machine has long been heralded by many as the greatest ORDER FROM CHAOS release. So highly regarded is it that some have referred to it as the finest work of extreme metal ever produced. Irrespective of such sweeping assertions, no convincing argument could be made which would deny this album a place alongside other classic metal albums of the highest order. After releasing a series of demos and the infamous Will to Power EP, OFC unveiled their first full-length album in 1993 on Decapitated Records amid a storm of controversy regarding the legitimacy of its alternate release on the notorious Wild Rags label. Now, 15 years later, the legacy of this album has been well-established and NWN! is proud to release the definitive vinyl version of Stillbirth Machine produced with the full permission, cooperation, and collective input of each of the members of OFC. To say that this album is flawless, could possibly be considered an understatement. It is a perfect unification of control and chaos, devastation and superiority. Stillbirth Machine opens with a long intro that, on any other album, one might be tempted to skip. Here, however, this passage merely cultivates a neurotic tension in anticipation of the onslaught that ensues when CHUCK KELLER's guitar pierces the aural fabric during the initial seconds of “The Edge of Forever” before the frenetic drumming of MIKE MILLER and the sadistic and wrathful vocals and bass playing of PETE HELMKAMP lead the listener into the depths of war. The Beastly Abyss Will Kill You
Nuclear War Now

***As NWN! continues to unearth Eastern Bloc obscurities and present them to a broader international audience, few albums have generated such enthusiastic anticipation as Varvar’s 1994 masterpiece The Beastly Abyss Will Kill You. While the notion of a mid-90s heavy metal record might repel some would-be listeners, the spirit of this album is more deeply rooted in the sound of 1980s. Varvar was active from 1986 to 1990 but disbanded and reunited three years later to record their first album, only to split up again a few years after its release. With a heavy metal melodic sensibility infused with elements of speed metal, this album is perfectly situated at the nexus of those two genres. Relatively little is known about the band, but owing to both its obscurity and the uniqueness of the sound, this album has long been a Holy Grail of Russian metal among collectors.

***NWN! is proud to present this long-overdue reissue of Phantasm's "Keeper of Death" as part of its Eastern Bloc Obscurities Series, thus making it available on vinyl for the first time since its original release on the Russian Disc label in 1993. As with other installments in this series, "Keeper of Death" has been widely underappreciated in the thirty years since its inception, largely due to geopolitical factors that made Russian music more inaccessible to Western cultures of the time. Without knowledge of this context, however, Phantasm and its sole full-length album would likely be mistaken by many to be a product of the Tampa, Florida area death metal scene of the time. Everything from a cursory inspection of the cover art and band logo to the copious amounts of death metal riffs, leads, and growls might lead to this conclusion. ***With this installment in its Eastern Bloc Obscurities Series, NWN! resuscitates Aspid's (Аспид) first and only album, "Effusion of Blood" ("Кровоизлияние"). Originally released in a pressing of 1000 vinyl LP copies on the Latvian label Ritonis in 1993, this masterpiece of Russian dirty technical thrash never received the level of exposure that would have elevated the band to the status of upper-tier thrash that it clearly deserves. On the other hand, those who have explored deeper than the surface of Eastern Bloc extreme metal have granted it the cult status that more than merits this reissue. "Effusion of Blood" moves from the ominous, two-minute-plus instrumental intro, performed by vocalist Vitaliy Kholopov on a Roland-W30, into some of the most evil, technical thrash ever recorded. Steeped in precision riffs and unconventional time signatures, the album showcases the skillful fretboard mastery of Aleksander Sidorchik throughout, ending with the instrumental title track, which clocks in at over eight minutes in length and also demonstrates Sidorchik's versatility in a variety of performance contexts. Given that copies of the original pressing typically fetch around three hundred dollars each, NWN! has rightfully seen fit to finally make it available to the masses.

***"In this day and age, it is highly unusual for a band to successfully and authentically channel the ancient sound of a highly-revered, but otherwise extinct scene in the metal world. One such seemingly irreplicable and legendary movement erupted in Brazil in the mid-1980s with an unmatched ferocity that birthed the likes of Sarcófago, Vulcano, Holocausto, Mutilator, and others of similar renown. Since then, it has been nearly unheard of for a band to establish itself by faithfully capturing the unmistakable sound pioneered by this iconic scene. However, there are always exceptions to rules, and one that has emerged to challenge such a paradigm has done so from the unlikely location of Leipzig, Germany. With its name itself a tribute to Vulcano’s 1986 debut, Bloody Vengeance has deliberately crafted its deadly weaponry of warfare noise over the past twelve-plus years. Nuclear War Now! and Bloody Vengeance first allied themselves to release a long-overdue vinyl version of the 2014 “Destruição Nuclear” album earlier this year. Composed of seven original tracks and two befitting covers of Sarcofago’s “Satanic Lust” and Mutilator’s “Believers of Hell,” this release served to reintroduce the Belo Horizonte scene to the legions of maniacs that saw it exclusively as a relic of the past. Now, less than a year later, Bloody Vengeance and NWN! have conspired again to bring forth “Ruido de Guerra,” the second full-length installment in the band’s arsenal. ***For nearly three decades, Australia’s StarGazer has released some of the most complex, evocative, and profound music in underground metal. Since its inception, StarGazer represents the visionary union of two extraordinary musicians—guitarist Denny Blake aka The Serpent Inquisitor (Martire, Misery’s Omen, Cauldron Black Ram, Intellect Devourer) and bassist Damon Good aka The Great Righteous Destroyer (Mournful Congregation, Misery’s Omen, Cauldron Black Ram). And for the last few years, they’ve been accompanied by the phenomenal drumming of Alan Cadman aka Khronomancer (Tzun Tzu, Ast Voldur, Altars). With their last album, 2021’s “Psychic Secretions,” StarGazer tapped into the aggressive energy of their earliest work while continuing to expand upon the progressive elements that feature more prominently in their recent releases. For the sake of authenticity, most interviews were conducted in Portuguese and then translated back in to English to get the most out of all interviewee, avoiding the usually poor amount of information and correct formulation that the language barriers usually impose on such work. Paimon Gate

Butcher to the Devil's Court
Nuclear War Now

***PAIMON GATE’s debut album—Butcher to the Devil's Court expands upon the groundwork laid out in the Seven Legions demo released last year from this new American black metal cult. For fans of brutal Black Metal from a time long lost, the tapestry of influences that make up this work may be noticed via the likes of Demoncy, Von, old Impaled Nazarene, old Marduk, old Samael and Morbid Angel. From a time when the lines between death metal and black metal were blurred and the potency of dark Satanic music was the focus—Paimon Gate's debut album delivers 30 minutes of scathing Satanic work—executed with an honest and sincere dedication to the evil art of black metal music.

A Merging to the Boundless by Stargazer

Stargazer

A Merging to the Boundless
Nuclear War Now

***REPRESSED!!!! Although the members of StarGazer are among the most active musicians in the Australian underground metal scene, they only infrequently release music under the StarGazer banner. Because of the band’s meticulous approach to every aspect of the music, when they do finally put out new material, there is little doubt as to the degree of quality one can expect. For these reasons, the announcement earlier this year that a new StarGazer album was on the horizon has generated a massive amount of anticipation, and with the release of A Merging to the Boundless, expectations will not only be met, but exceeded. Despite approaching the 20-year mark of StarGazer’s existence, A Merging to the Boundless is only the band’s third full-length album. Each of the band’s releases demonstrates continual growth and evolution, while maintaining the core traits that characterize all of StarGazer’s music. The new album opens with the title track, featuring frenetic, labyrinthine riffs stitched together seamlessly across disparate keys and tempos. While the disorienting fury of the title track may harken back to the more decidedly Black/Death style of band’s earlier recordings, the album shifts abruptly with the somber intro to “An Earth Rides its Endless Carousel”—one of the several standout tracks on the album. Beginning with a lush instrumental passage adorned with shimmering, clean guitars and sweeping bass arpeggios, the song gradually gains momentum before eventually erupting. The track, like the album as a whole, shifts and moves, waxes and wanes, in a thoroughly organic manner, never...

***The return of primitive, barbaric paganism, from the depth of the Finnish woods, drenched in beer and sweat, he strikes with his axe held high. The 4th full-length from this horde is finally upon us, three years after Force of Violence, and might just be the best from the project so far. A project whose lineup is yet to be revealed, but all we know is that it, at least, involves the mighty Harald Mentor (Ride for Revenge, FCoA, Uskonrauha, etc.) and his absolute scorching vocals. With better production, and the drum sound more powerful than ever, Spartan Youth is also often more eccentric, incorporating weirder vocal registers, like the almost Ian Curtis-ish register on tracks like "Spartan Youth,” which is both bizarre and intriguing as it is catchy and ominous. Over 30 minutes of unforgiving, unending stomp, with the Punk-ish riffage, certainly influenced by the likes of ildjarn, Ødelegger and Bone Awl carrying the stoic energy and fury of the warrior, while the drums continuously pummel on the enemy with both powerful and captivating manner. Limited pressing of 250 copies.

Majestic Nothingness by Carpe Tenebrum

Carpe Tenebrum

Majestic Nothingness
Nuclear War Now

***Conceived in the arid deserts of Australia and recorded across the globe in Norway—Carpe Tenebrum’s debut release Majestic Nothingness is undoubtedly a forgotten gem of 90s black metal. Carpe Tenebrum was formed as the solo project by Lord Kaos guitarist Jamie “Astennu” Stinson in early 1994. While Lord Kaos shopped their debut album Thorns of Impurity to record labels, Astennu left for Norway with nothing but his guitar. Once there, he would stay with Head Not Found Records / Slayer Mag founder Metalion and begin recording Majestic Nothingness at the legendary Creative Studios (birthplace of Mayhem’s Deathcrush and the first two Darkthrone black metal albums). The album itself would end up being guitar centric—perfectly spotlighting Astennu’s virtuosic abilities and songwriting prowess. The vocals were supplied by Nagash of Troll and Covenant (the latter of which Astennu would join shortly after the release of this album). While many black metal bands in the late 90s hid their half hearted riffs and regurgitated lyrics with layers of keyboards and vocal effects, Carpe Tenebrum dove fearlessly into chaotic darkness—dragging the listener with them on their respiteless journey. Eerie and sulphuric black metal recorded in 1995 at Creative Studios in Norway (Mayhem/Darkthrone). For fans of early Covenant, Ragnarok and Emperor.

***With the release of an EP and two full-length albums between 1979 and 1980, guitarist Kimmo Kuusniemi, known for the crude amateur pyrotechnics of the flamethrower guitar he wielded on stage, had established his band Sarcofagus as one of the few heavy metal acts in Finland, and certainly the most innovative and intriguing. At the time, Kuusniemi had a job doing PR and sales analysis for JP-Musiikki OY, the record label that released the first two Sarcofagus records. By 1981, Kuusniemi was working on a new album, but the label was skeptical of the band’s prospects. Leery of the name Sarcofagus, the label insisted on using Kimmo Kuusniemi Band for the next release—a demand to which Kuusniemi begrudgingly acquiesced. It was just one of several necessary concessions Kuusniemi would make in order to bring the Moottorilinnut album into existence. Despite the name change, the inclusion of keyboardist Esa Kotilainen and bassist Juha Kiminki, both of whom appeared on the two previous Sarcofagus albums, maintained continuity for the band. For the vocals, Kuusniemi sought out singers Kirka Babitzkin and his sister Muska, who had been popular in Finland since the 1970s but had never recorded any sort of heavy rock music. Kuusniemi reached out to Kirka expected him to decline the invitation. But to Kuusniemi’s surprise, Kirka and Muska both agreed to participate, with Kirka contributing vocals on two tracks (“1000 megawatin totuus” and “Veistoksen ajatuksia”) and Muska adding her energetic voice to three others (“Metallinen sateenkaari,” “Elävien hautausmaa,” and “Megakone”)....

***Though they’re often described as Finland’s first heavy metal band, Sarcofagus’ place in the broader context of metal’s emergence in late 1970s and early 1980s is arguably more significant. For perspective, consider the fact that Sarcofagus self-released their first EP in 1979—the same year as Iron Maiden’s Soundhouse Tapes EP. The next year saw the release of not just one, but two full lengths, Cycle of Life and Envoy of Death. Not only did they make an early arrival on the scene, the albums they recorded in 1980 were musically and thematically far ahead of their time. Recorded onto 8-track over three days at Pan Studio in Helsinki, Cycle of Life was an ambitious debut, establishing Sarcofagus among the heaviest bands of that era while simultaneously stretching the bounds of the emergent genre. The first five songs on Cycle of Life form what is essentially a “concept album,” despite only spanning the first side of the record. The songs follow a single narrative, telling the story of a man who, believing himself to be an incarnation of Horus, the ancient Egyptian sky god, is deemed insane and confined in a mental hospital. Pursuing suicide as his only means of escape, he kills himself only to be reincarnated and condemned to suffer life once again. The theme of suicide proved controversial, resulting in at least one claim by a parent, albeit unsubstantiated, that a teenager killed himself after listening to the album. These tracks, written by guitarist Kimmo Kuusniemi—the only consistent...

The Cursed Singles by Death SS

Death SS

The Cursed Singles
Nuclear War Now

***The full story of Death SS is one that spans over forty years, but as with most bands that have had a truly revolutionary historical impact, it is the formative years of the band’s existence that are most significant. "The First Seal,” as it is described by band founder and creative director, Stefano Silvestri, encompassed the years between the band’s conceptual genesis in 1977 and Silvestri’s temporary departure in 1982. During this time, Silvestri envisioned and created an entity that would permanently alter the trajectory of heavy rock, metal, punk, and other related genres. Along with Paul Chain, Silvestri combined elements of horror, occultism and heavy metal to become a pioneer in horror metal and black metal; the musical style is called "horror music" by the band. Sylvester left the band in 1982 and Chain replaced him with Sanctis Ghoram before closing the project in 1984 to start his solo career. Sylvester reformed the band in 1988 (with him being the only original member). This new incarnation of the band recorded their first full-length album, ...in Death of Steve Sylvester. There would be many line-up changes in the years to come, with Sylvester once again being the only constant. The Cursed singles features eight tracks recorded during the band's first era 1977-1984.

***Hailing from Tunsberg, Norway, Vemod (not to be confused with current Norse metal band of the same name) rose from the ashes of Norway's legendary 2nd wave of black metal. Nearly 5 years removed from the genre's murderous peak, brothers - Saargh and Chagrin - formed the band amidst tumultuous times. Though many people are quick to write off the late 90s as an era plagued by corporatization and trend-hopping, demos like this are perfect examples of the mystical black force that was still percolating in the underground. The recording itself is notable for its drab atmosphere and desolate production—somehow perfectly blending the styles of groups like Emperor and Lycia. Experimental in its compositions and boundary pushing in its influences, Vemod would truly lay their cards on the table with this single release. A must listen for those drawn to dark and sorrowful music of any genre. Highly recommended for fans of Limbonic Art, Odium and Emperor.

Again Shall Be / Alone Walkyng by Hades

Hades

Again Shall Be / Alone Walkyng
Nuclear War Now

***A reissue of the band's first album from 1994 along with their debut demo from 1993. Countless words have been written about the black metal scene that flourished in Norway during the early 1990s, usually focused on the same few bands—Mayhem, Immortal, Darkthrone, etc.—that have come to be synonymous with the phrase “Norwegian Black Metal.” If those bands formed the nucleus of the scene, HADES was in tight orbit around them. After playing in AMPUTATION and IMMORTAL, guitarist JORN INGE TUNSBERG (who was also playing in OLD FUNERAL at the time) united with drummer REMI ANDERSEN to conjure a new entity known as Hades. Bored with bands more focused on speed than songwriting, the two took a multi-dimensional approach, slowing down the pace and emphasizing atmosphere and composition. Together with bassist and vocalist JANTO GARMANSLUND and second guitarist ANDREAS NAGELSETT, they recorded the three-song Alone Walkyng demo in 1993. Rather than settle for crude production, Hades recorded the demo at the legendary Grieghallen Studio, which Tunsberg knew from having previously recorded there with Amputation, and where many prominent Norwegian bands recorded their early material. Among those who ended up with a copy of the Alone Walkyng demo was JON JAMSHID, who had recently founded Full Moon Productions, one of the first black metal labels in the United States. Via handwritten letter, Jamshid expressed his desire to put out Hades’ debut as one of the first releases on the label. The band agreed, and, in 1994, following Nagelsett’s dismissal, they recruited...

The Dawn of the Dying Sun by Hades

Hades

The Dawn of the Dying Sun
Nuclear War Now

***A reissue of HADES' second album from 1997 with two bonus tracks. In 1992, on Christmas Eve, Hades guitarist and founding member, JORN TUNSBERG, along with COUNT GRISHNACKH, set fire to the Åsane Church in Bergen. The police investigation lasted about a year and it took another year for Norwegian authorities to convict Tunsberg. He began serving his two-year sentence in March of 1995, just a few months after the release of Hades’ debut album …Again Shall Be. Though his time in prison stalled the band’s progress, Tunsberg and his bandmates remained committed to the work they’d begun with Hades. Tunsberg’s prison sentence meant the band could not tour; however, while incarcerated, Tunsberg and bassist/vocalist JANTO GARMANSLUND continued writing. Due to the comparatively relaxed nature of the Norwegian penal system, Tunsberg was able to rehearse with the band—both in the prison and at their rehearsal space—and was even allowed to play a show in Bergen in May of 1996. A couple months later, the band returned to Grieghallen Studio to record their monumental second album, The Dawn of the Dying Sun, featuring the core lineup of Tunsberg, Garmansland, drummer REMI ANDERSEN, and second guitarist STIG HAGENES. Released in December 1997 on Full Moon Productions, The Dawn of the Dying Sun represented the full bloom of Hades’ sound. Featuring vigorous riffs ensconced among cascading windswept melodies, The Dawn of the Dying Sun is compositionally darker and more aggressive than the band’s debut album. The densely layered production and complex songwriting give...

***Approximately three years after it first arose to haunt the domain of the living with Those of the Catacombs, Scolopendra again emerges from its Italian tomb to deliver its second full-length album, VM18. Much like its predecessor, VM18 draws notably on an inherited tradition first established by the band’s compatriots in Death SS, by evoking a grotesque atmosphere that would befit an old RG horror comic of the 1970s set to motion picture. In fact, the cover art on both VM18 and the debut are more than a subtle nod to this literary genre. Musically speaking, Scolopendra deviates from the style of Death SS to some degree by heavily incorporating the sound of ancient U.S. death metal, as perhaps most reflected in the work of Autopsy and Necrophagia. The tempo is primarily in the higher range, with occasional dives into doomier interludes. Driving bass lines are dominantly featured in the mix, as the guitars chug along with them and occasionally rise above with a well-timed lead. Of course, it is almost impossible to imagine a horror-based musical form without keyboards, and Scolopendra makes very effective and judicious use of them without going overboard. Finally, aside from their omission in the two instrumental tracks (not including the short intro), it is perhaps most likely the vocals that will leave the greatest impression on the listener. It is this element that contributes most to the overall grisliness of the sound, as the lyrics are seemingly disgorged from the decomposed vocal tract of...
