Mark Feehan is a guitarist. In the 80s he bummed Floridian punks in Broken Talent. In the 90s he strangled strings and blew minds in Harry Pussy. Currently he is in post-no wave noiseniks Taiwan Housing Project. But these are mentioned merely as bio, as these things- hell, even Mark's lone solo lp (2012's MF on Siltbreeze)- will give you ZERO preparation for the sounds lurking inside MF 2. Moments of surprising acoustic beauty bookend perplexing electronic sound pools, buzzing almost-punk, Germanic vocal narration... It is safe to say this is the weirdest thing ever to appear on this label, and while we don't pretend to understand it half of it, we do know that we enjoy it. For those who welcome befuddlement and bemusement, we salute you! Hop on board.

Abstract Recipe by Mordecai

Mordecai

Abstract Recipe
Richie Records

Fourth full-length (the 3rd issued by Richie Records//TestosterTunes) from Mordecai of the great upper plains. It’s a no-frills rock (punk? garage? post-punk? indie rock? blech. it’s rock) album that oughta perk up the ears of those interested in things like thwarted freedom, advanced mathematics, the Blue Mask, bum notes, and staring at the wall. Though the band grows increasingly competent and confident with each release, these precocious MFers possess a flippant world-weariness typically reserved for no-accounts and has-beens at the beginning of their third marriage.  Recall, if you can, the moment when you recognized life for what it is: a low-key drag, but one interesting enough to wake up for each morning. Mordecai huddled up in Montana with an electric guitar & some drums & a bass and they put that moment on a record and it’s called Abstract Recipe.

Lightly swirling wah. Is-it-wrong-or-is-it-right leads. Intermittent odd percussion flourishes. Songs about shrimp rolls to go. Loosey goosey warbling atmosphere turned to 10. This is the world of Sparrow Steeple, comprised of almost all of Philly's legendary Strapping Fieldhands fronted by noted visual artist Barry Goldberg. Beginning secretly in the last decade by SF mainman Bob Malloy and drummer Jeff Werner to record Barry's inscrutable songs, the band has now become a legit proposition, minus Bob but with SF guitar and bass Jacy Webster and Bob Dickie, keyboardist Dustin Burrows and record maniac Harmonica Dan.  Just as Sir Isaac Newton postulated, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and Strapping Fieldhands fans will find familiar footing here. As for strangers to this weird realm, how about a Tommy Jay more enamored with Incredible String Band than with Lou Reed? Confused? We are too.

Long-overdue long-form platter from Philadelphia’s Spacin’, the low-key torchbearers of both John Sinclair’s bold program and the fuzzy truth that less is often more (much more) as demonstrated by Lou’s time with Morrison & Tucker & Cale. On Total Freedom, guitarist & vocalist Jason Killinger blazes the path, lead guitarist Paul Sukeena & bassist Sean Hamilton vamp on economical electric chugs while drummer Eva Killinger reprises in her role as thee undisputed master of basement motorik. As a handsomely illustrated insert attests, the whole thing is punctuated by flourishes from some of most celebrated talents of this town’s percolating stew. Blast it soon or remain condemned to a billion years probation.

The fractured, ballsy electric guitar pop from Dan DiMaggio’s outfit defines the form. Anybody who has been paying attention already knows that the Home Blitz name is a trademark of quality stamped on a handful of singles and EPs, as well as their jaw-dropping album on the Richie Records label. Foremost & Fair continues the trajectory of those records, achieving heights of fidelity, craft and fretwork dexterity that will continue to elude humbuggers, ham ’n’ eggers, and all the other-butter-users for years to come. DiMaggio and the Home Blitz name have rightfully been pegged to the tradition of prolific, idiosyncratic punk-qua-pop individualists, but if you’re looking for a convenient reference, you won’t find it in this little write-up. Home Blitz stands alone.

The CV on Aye Aye, the long-rumored self-titled debut by Philadelphia’s premier desert blues marsupials, runs deep through the beer-strewn underbelly of Philly rock. The Gibbons Bros’ unmistakable slow-motion, big-chord fuzz will be familiar to anyone who’s taken a plunge into the Bardo Pond soundpool over the last few decades, though a cultivated ear will note more grits and butts and less pedalboard worship here. Ben Leapheart retains his very official title of greatest drummer in Philadelphia—have you shmoes not heard Purling Hiss or Watery Love?—with his innate understanding that the drums lead, not merely keep time. And then there’s the high lonesome harp of Harmonica Dan Balcer, a record hound of profound depth. He’s been the public face of Boogie Witch, blown his harp on records by Jack Rose and Birds of Maya, blasted noise with the Megajam Booze Band, patiently schooled dingdongs from behind the counter at the Philadelphia Record Exchange, and devoted unhealthy decades to an insatiable thirst for true rock spirit. Yeah, yeah, cool, but what does it sound like? OK bub, how about terrestrial crunching rock drifting over a great expanse? Aye Aye is limited to 300 copies on vinyl and includes a complimentary digital download with purchase.

***BACK iN PRiNT!!! "In the never interesting saga to determine Punk's best primitive hooligans, MEN will blog & sputter endlessly about Drunks W/Guns or Brainbombs as martyrs of the cause. And who amongst us would deny either their berth on the altar? As an agnostic, I cannot count the stations of said cross, but I do respect it nonetheless. So it's refreshing to see a band wander into this Garage of Gethsemane & fire up their own corroded engine, pistons wheezing, oil belching, you know how it goes; many are crucified, but few resurrected. Where WATERY LOVE fit into this scenario remains to be determined, but when it comes to archaic beats, they're already dragging their knuckles over sainted simpletons such as Butter Utter, Deutscher Abschaum & Just Urbain. 45 rpm's haven't sounded this hairy in many moons & as debut's go, they don't come more scabrous. Get one now before they learn to talk."—Roland Woodbe, Siltblog

Neil’s Generator by Mordecai

Mordecai

Neil’s Generator
Richie Records

Why does everybody make such a big to-do about Mordecai’s Montana origins? Hell, it’s a place just like any other, just bigger than most. And it’s not like the (true) story of them recording in a YMCA bathroom really offers a proper “big sky” vibe, although it certainly had a more unique aroma than most studios. But on Neil’s Generator, things really do open up in a way where the juxtaposition between huge space / not so huge amount of people really makes sense. If the previous LP College Rock formed a friendly union between noisy Swell Maps-ian clatter, post-garage Fall prickliness, and the all-American DIY basement joy of Mike Rep / Tommy Jay, Neil’s Generator embodies the same kind of loose, ragged glory perpetrated by the Meat Puppets, Rayne, Dead Moon, and the Velvets staring into a cracked and filthy mirror. The guitars—and make no mistake, this is a guitar record, and a damn fine one indeed!—retain a spiky waywardness, like if Robert Quine had recorded a Rough Trade single. But these songs have more space to breathe, and therefore function as a launching pad for some gleeful six-string abandon. Who knows how many rodeos the Bodish brothers have witnessed, but for sure they understand the risky notion that sometimes you’re in control of a guitar, other times the guitar can get the best of you. If they’re not afraid to take the chance, you shouldn’t be either—so hop on board.

***A slight return to the red-hot, fried and twisted garage/psych/punk blasts we’ve come to expect from MIKE POLIZZE’s PURLING HISS. He’s way off the leash on this one, up Hiss creek with nobody to paddle home. Recorded in various Philadelphia-area basements and men’s rooms over the course of 2007-11, the sessions were stunted and aborted as each successive borrowed practice amp blew smoke and crapped out under the strain of Polizze’s fiery fret work. Originally a cassette-only release, but just about every tape was quickly scattered and smashed along the Schuykill Expressway after being left on the roof of the tour van. Edition of 500 copies.

Impossible To Say / Whiskers by Strapping Fieldhands

Strapping Fieldhands

Impossible To Say / Whiskers
Richie Records

***Back in the rough n' tumble days (and nights) of the 1990s, you'd be hard pressed to find a single slobbering indie-rock drunkard who wasn't a Fieldhands fan.  From the tremendous early Siltbreeze singles to the magnificent Omphalos full-lengths, the galaxy and beyond were charmed by their wayward off-kilter pre/post-skiffle, pre/post-psychedelic, and pre/post-punk avant pop.  Bob Malloy crafted swaying bizarre stories & fables in a fake British accent as convincing as a perfectly fitting Toupée. But aside from 2002's unsung and virtually unheard Third Kingdom, all has been seemingly quiet in Fieldhands land.  But aha! They've only been slumbering, laying in wait writing and recording. Which brings us here.  Two brand new songs. One is a lively and scrappy, yet wistful anthem, perfect for hoisting a pint with the lads.  The other is a tender Ray Davies-ian ballad about a bearded lady.  Hey, you're the one who asked!

***Two-shot blast from this dazzling low-culture, high-impact unit from Chicago. Past the Edge smacks ya around with Martin Rev’s suicidal pulse and the type of twisted fretboard abuse that warrants enough respect to keep us from mocking Helios Creed’s cowboy hat to his face. Grading on a Curve is the soundtrack to an uninvited chemically-induced journey. A bad one.

College Rock is the rabidly anticipated new full-length from Mordecai, the most charismatically tuneful knuckle-draggers in Missoula; quite possibly in all of Montana.    The album cruises and plods across twelve tunes that recall the rougher trades coming out of the UK, the early squall of Cleveland’s proto-punk merchants and the reckless abandon of Will Shatter and crew. This rock trio lacks pretense; their power comes from the electric joy of plugging in and turning up.    Geographic isolation works in their favor, as guys of Mordecai’s talent and vision would surely have been chewed up and spit out long ago by a more populous metropolis. Instead, College Rock proves that at least a few residents of Silver Bow County can teach a lesson in urban detachment.

***BACK IN PRINT WITH NEW ARTWORK!!! Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork. Debut LP from SPACIN', the newly formed Philadelphia act that's bringing together kick-flippers, arm-wrestlers, and hackey-sackers in head-nodding, beer swilling unity. Inhales the same fumes that fuel the Velvets workout at the gymnasium, the Stooges sleazy-fuzz with Asheton on guitar, and the groovy zen of Nigeria '70.   “The first pearl bestowed upon us in the form of a side project from Philadelphia’s finest gnarled-out Psych trio BIRDS OF MAYA  was guitarist Mike Polizzes’ Purling Hiss, and now we have bass player JASON KILLINGER with his very killer and very screwy new project, SPACIN’. Originally a basement-only solo thing consisting of Killinger playing guitar through a pyramid of amps accompanied by a drum machine, Spacin’ has started to squeak itself above ground and into the barrooms of the city with a fully functioning lineup. The dude doesn’t even need the drum machine anymore; he’s got his wife EVA pounding the skins! Sneak previews of their upcoming debut full-length Deep Thuds, shows a unit who knows the economic gain to be had from a good, hypnotic riff. For those who have ever gotten lost for days in the strains of the Velvet Undergrounds’ ‘Sister Ray,’ Jonathan Richmans’ ‘Roadrunner,’ Hawkwinds’ ‘Silver Machine’ or even Deep Purples’ ‘Space Truckin,’’ repeated listening to Spacin’ is required in excessive doses.”—Tony Rettman (Philadelphia Weekly)   Empty Mind...

Yellow Eyes And The Sound Of Vomit by Factorymen

Factorymen

Yellow Eyes And The Sound Of Vomit
Richie Records

More Mensa material from the Rust Belt. FACTORYMEN is a sociopathic, meticulously crafted studio project that centers around Steve Peffer (Homostupids, Folded Shirt, Pleasure Leftists, etc.). It involves the targeted misuse of Rock & even Dance Music instruments and it’s certain to test the patience of your roommate, lover, or father. Yellow Eyes & The Sound of Vomit is an obtuse, off-putting, though catchy mini-album. These are the types of tunes that will roll around in your empty head and you’ll recall them, with horror, as you wait for the bus or write a check for rent or when you beg for forgiveness from your boss after your latest fuck-up. This record is the soundtrack to unpleasantness.   305 copies. Covers silk-screened by Neil Burke at Monoroid.   Includes mp3 download for Yellow Eyes... + Shitman + the debut FACTORYMEN 45 on My Mind’s Eye Records.

***Here's the last gasp effort from VIOLENT STUDENTS, a defunct Philadelphia-based black hole punk / hardcore outfit whose wasters have been and continue to be involved in some arguably more-refined and mature projects. This self-medicated, throbbing set was recorded live at their last gig at a South Philadelphia firetrap before a crowd of black-clad pencil-necked geeks that shrank with each passing tic of the metronome. Most of those intensely posed youngsters left too early to witness an exploratory stomp through “Seekers of the Truth.” The Students here are joined by BLUES CONTROL’S LEA CHO, who was a last second replacement on guitar when JIM WINTERS (of EARTH CRISIS, CONVICTION, etc.) proved tardy. The flip side is A Handy Magician, originally infamously issued as a cassette in 2004 or so. And as a more articulate scribe has famously noted, if you remember a Violent Students gig, then you weren’t there. Insightful liner notes courtesy of TONY RETTMAN.

***“Fucking finally. I just about dug out the grooves from the debut BRAINWASHED YOUTH single a few years ago. It was a boneheaded statement of defiance and thuggery. That one was called Life of Crime. They might as well have called it Hooligans with Guitars. This one is called The Trilogy. It starts off with an outtake from the Bonham solo in ‘Moby Dick’ and then it kicks into some furious punk rock music that's thoroughly indebted to the Queen, the Union Jack, and all the mugs in England. It’s all courtesy of some infamous blockheads who have surfaced in groups like the INMATES, H-100s, WOLFDOWNERS, and even INTEGRITY.”—TestosterTunes

INCLUDES FREE DOWNLOAD COUPON!!!   Well it’s finally here. It’s the new LP by PURLING HISS and it’s called Hissteria. It’s two sides of hi-energy psychedelic punk rock & roll that manages to weld Funhouse‘s dialed-in sleaze rhythms to the hungover excess of Hendrix at Woodstock. Or Ginn at Polliwog Park. It’s full of clanging cymbals, howling vocals, fretboard heroics, and menacing vibes. Purling Hiss is the work of a well-mannered longhair named MIKE POLIZZE, who is best known for his reckless shredding as the guitar player for Philadelphia’s BIRDS OF MAYA. Hissteria is a suitable soundtrack for zonked drives across the dead highways of the USA. Or for predawn paranoid sessions as you pace back and forth in the kitchen trying figure out just what the hell you’re going to do, man. Or just crank it real loud when the party gets strange. Some people will love it and the rest of them can go somewhere else and go fuck themselves.

Negotiating this deal took all types of backroom dealing and late-night, unsavory tactics. Some egos may have been bruised, but the slugfest was worth the coup in welcoming this high-profile act to the RR//TT roster. Out of Phase forges a blazing thirtee- track romp through hard rock, power-pop, and even Oi territories, and it’s got some of the crispest licks since Meat Puppets II (or Priest’s Defenders of the Faith).”

***“Sexy new platter from Philadelphia's only punk band. Yes, that A-Side is a cover of the Remo Voor tune. And they do wonders with it. It's not slathered in distortion and scuzz-bass as you might expect. No, it's more subtle, like a really muscular group finessing their way through a pop song. Still quite brassy, a little awkward at moments, yet very tastefully done. It's actually quite magical. You'll also be surprised to hear JOHN-JOHN actually sings a little bit on this one. On the flip side, fuck, it's back to business. ‘Early Man’ is a stunner reprised from the full length and features these three savages flinging shit at the walls of their cave, drenched in delay and blood. Once again Clockcleaner proves why they are the highest paid touring band on the circuit. Scums stats: only a few, make sure to buy in bulk.
