She's The Bomb by Control Freaks

Control Freaks

She's The Bomb
Slovenly

***Slovenly Recordings presents the latest full length hunk o’ junk from San Francisco’s last standing Budget Rockers THE CONTROL FREAKS! You should know what to expect here by now, so don’t make us waste our bad breath trying to explain it to you, gum boy. But this time there’s not one, but TWO covers of ‘77 KBD genius—both from Australia, and both by BABEEZ! One of our most worshipped singles ever by a long shot gets the ridiculous(ly enthusiastic) GREG LOWERY treatment on “Dowanna Love,” with newly added C-Freak SHERRILYNN NELSON taking over vox doody for “Nobody Wants Me,” and smashing some cheap keys on the rest of the LP, adding a new layer of scuzz to the classic G-Lo beat! So yeah, like, the new LP is called She’s The Bomb, and IT is the bomb, and it certainly has more to offer than just two cool cover songs. This thing is loaded (and we know “loaded”) with hit after smash hit like “I Hate Your Face,” “Hate List,” and we wish there was at least one more song with “Hate” in the title, but “Creep You Out” is on the level, and you’re gonna need a “First Aid Kit” when this sucker’s done tearing you a new one. But what do we know? We make no claims about being any smarter than this LP. (STREET DATE - 9/06/2019)

***It only took us over a year, but in true Goon fashion we think we've finally figured out how to get a proper version of the super limited, custom made and long sold out third LP from GINO AND THE GOONS into the filthy mitts of the general public. Originally manufactured in China and released in an edition of 300 copies on the band’s own SunWray Records label with photocopied artwork pasted onto garbage thrift store LP covers, the Rip It Up album is now available to the masses on MADE IN THE USA vinyl, with digital mastering handled by TIM WARREN at Crypt Records. Mark Twisitworthy at Razorcake Magazine writes: “...catchy yet snotty, fitting perfectly amongst the big name 'budget rock' titles of yesteryear. This is everything I want in a garage rock record in 2018. Listening to this is like having a full LP of only the Jon Von penned Rip Offs songs—raw as fuck but catchy enough to get stuck in your head an hour later. There’s no doubting their adoration of raw rock’n’roll… If you like your garage punk sounding like it’s straight out of the best releases from 1994, then this absolutely must be in your collection.” (STREET DATE - 9/06/2019)

***The Kritikal Beatdown continues as Black Gladiator and Slovenly Recordings present the second album from Athens via Crete dynamik duo HAND & LEG. The new LP is called Lust In Peace and it advances the post-punk infused concoction of blazing garage and art-driven destructo-rock as established on their grinding debut. Murky shades of sexual negativity plow forth with the help of white hot distortion, alternating between soul crushing fuzz bass dirges, ungodly squalls of noise, and occasional playful rhythmic rituals that offer brief respite from the saturation of musical sadism. ***From the Best Coast of the Great White North, Vancouver’s SORE POINTS have just become our latest Canuck obsession and we’re pumped as fuck to slap the Slovenly label on their latest EP! This new 7-inch, their third release and first for us, is a bonafide banger from the get-go, putting the smack down with a snarling four songs in six minutes wallop, steeped in that radical moment in time where late '70s UK punk and early '80s Ami-hard core collided. From the opening, ear-piercing squeal of “Not Alright,” to the deadly squall of feedback and brain-bashing pummel on “Not Coming Back,” Sore Points fork over breakneck kicks in spades, and guarantees your own rock’n’roll kicks for days. Monsieur Sultan makes autobiographical on the suave and sparse "Filthy Rat," switching gears from slow to GO! on the swinging flip "Heart Attack," harmonizing with his own bad self over a classic teenpunk shuffle beat with the unmistakable goldenthroat that all the crazed kids the world over swoon for. ***Slovenly Recordings is proud as hell to present the debut LP from Puerto-Punk screamers LADRONES. From the gutters of Atlanta by way of the island paradise known as San Juan, Ladrones exist in that undeniably fun sweet spot of punk and rock ‘n’ roll where pogoing and slam dancing all make sense, dedicating album opener “Tropimuerte” to the island’s tradition of el jangueo (simply “hanging out”) - it could easily go unnoticed for what it really is: a declaration of individuality, defying any demands for conformity*. Led by crazed, mic-gripping she-devil VALERIA SANCHEZ, Ladrones goes Reatards in spasmodic bursts of pure aggression, with a respectful nod to Los Angeles legends X and superhero Exene Cervenka while channeling the swinging and playful doo-wop side of fellow countrymen Los Vigilantes, but this is an extra special snot-rocket en Español that they own to the hilt. ¡VAMOS A TRIPIAL!

***Amsterdam's shattered punk destroyers return with a four-song 7-inch EP of pure raunch rockin' static to destroy your brain cells faster than a stroll through a Carbona factory! Our team of vigilante harbingers of trash is currently composed of fellow mutants: REMI LUCAS and French maestro-bator LOOCH VIBRATO, notorious for his work in the garage punk outfit MAGNETIX—two worthy men if any to join our reptilian hero BONE on his quest for imminent meltdown. "Trooper" is an absolute ripper that kicks the door in and is clearly a bold statement: THE ANOMALYS are still going strong and in fine form,” while “Fire In the Hole" is an explosive mindfucker set to leave you in a daze. ***The YOUNG SKULLS are comprised of three storied head bashers: vocalist and guitarist PETER AARON (CHROME CRANKS, AVONDALE ARIFORCE), drummer CHRIS TURCO (TRANS AM, SCEME CREAMERS) and organist MATTY DREAD (EL FRONT, COUNTY HELL). The trio came together in 2015 in the dimly lit basement of a grimy machine shop next to the railroad tracks in an isolated industrial sector of Kingston, New York, about two hours north of Manhattan. And that’s pretty much what they sound like. Scraping sheet-metal guitar. Howling alley-cat vocals. Bashing, hydraulic-press drums. And wheezing organ that echoes the squealing iron wheels of the crude oil carriers thundering by hourly just outside their bleak practice chamber. They sound like all of that cool stuff, with songs. Catchy songs.

Bay Of Pigs Ep

***"Washington DC band DES DEMONAS exploded into the national consciousness with a debut LP on In The Red a few months back, and they're not letting up now... as diseased organ-soaked and fizz-drenched as it can get. 'Bay of Pigs' keeps it real with it's pounding chorus 'Feeling like a Victim of Tiiiiiime' so naturally this works on many levels. Featuring a guitar player from KID CONGO & THE PINKMONKEY BIRDS, who also did time in THE MAKE-UP, it's got credentials to spare, but this six-foot-five Kenyan lead singer (JACKY COUGAR ABOK, ex-GINO AND THE GOONS) is gonna steal the show for certain. There's a faint Deadly Snakes vibe when the organ tone really hits, too, but this is much, much, heavier and less quaint, with the guttural vocals steering this into a stomping mess of noise. Far more rambunctious and unholy, far more strained and angry."—Todd Novak, Victim of Time

New Pleasure

***"Slovenly Recordings zooms into a new universe somewhere between their trademark trashy echo-poonk and future-shock squalls with New Pleasure by Montreal quintet PRIORS. Hailing, scaling, and wailing from a long-scrambling Canadian scene whose rep is not as revered as it should be, Priors furiously scrunches together lacerating fuzz riffs, maniacal snare drum abuse, skittish analog shivers, and savagely scared shouting that's sometimes double-tracked into microchip-loose robot nervousness. Priors idea of 'letting up' is a quick drum intro like on 'Sunshine,' the plower pop of 'At Your Leisure,' the half-minute instro-intermission of 'Life Part 2,' or, uh... Oh who are we kidding? They don't let up, and they don't kid. A frozen stare into some slate-grey abyss is their 'look'—two minutes of pummel, their 'sound.' Avoidance of nuclear war or any other waste of time their 'career trajectory.' New Pleasure—their leap-ahead second LP—is the next album to convince you that rock'n'roll not only has gas in the tank, but space rocket fuel too, burning off into worlds beyond this square one."—Eric Davidson (New Bomb Turks, Livids; author, We Never Learn) (STREET DATE - 11/16/2018)

***The highly anticipated and way overdue second album from Sacramento, CA freakbeat legends TH’ LOSIN STREAKS has finally landed in the sweaty palms of Slovenly Recordings, and we couldn’t be more gassed! This Band Will Self-Destruct in T-Minus finds Th’ Losin Streaks regrouping after a devastating break-up in 2010—six years after the release of their debut LP Sounds of Violence—teaming up once again with long time friend and producer CHRIS WOODHOUSE (Thee Oh Sees, Blind Shake, Ty Segall) for the sole record he agreed to produce in 2018—the same record proclaimed by mastering engineer TIM WARREN (Crypt Records) to be “'The best American tribute to Freakbeat ever made.”  Let’s be frank for a moment here: what this ain’t is the simplistic and primitive ‘Streaks garage stomp of yore. This band has stumbled upon a sophisticated formula that relies far less on the 1-4-5, as the new “Order of the Day” finds our veteran hipsters in all-out mod-mode, propelled by ace-face Mike Farrell’s freshest and most inspiring melodic tattoo to date - you’ll swear it’s the searing cacophony of shagged-out Limey teens dosed on a fistfull of vitamin E, kicking out a wall of twistable scree front and center at a liquid light show in early 90s Madchester. Genius maniac drummer and fellow MONKS fanatic Matt K. Shrugg works in two hairy shots of beat-punk snarl as a composer / vocalist on this outing, monking up a mutated version of the “Complication” riff on “Falling Rain,” and you can bet...

It is from this posture that Puerto Rican power-trio DESAHUCIADOS espouses their hardcore gospel of human ruin. Tough sounds for tougher times, born of a pack of rabid jackals disgusted with socio-political realities. ANMLS are ready to ruck! (STREET DATE - 3/09/2018)

***Slovenly Recordings proudly presents the debut vinyl offering from Greek punk prankster GEORGE FOTOPOULOUS, doing business as electro-punk outfit NOMOS 751. This self-titled LP houses more music than should be legally permissible on a single album, with 17 tracks of tricky compositions propelled by rinky-dink synth and programmed percussion ranking at zero acidity on the PH scale for Phat Beats. Having previously rotted our minds in the mid-aughts with his Thessaloniki budget rocker crew KOMODINA 3, Mr. Fotopoulos has developed and perfected a seizure inducing sonic smorgasbord of complicated and hilarious racket and punk rock polyrhythms that sounds like your favorite Stranglers LP played at 45rpm, or perhaps backwards, or at least in Greek. In fact, the tongue is so twisted that it’s barely recognizable as humanoid, and we therefore spaced adding the Mondo Mongo imprint to the jacket. Enjoy the gibberish whatever you’re capable of computing: there’s a giant, full color newsprint poster housed in the jacket with lyrics printed in both Greek and English, for the curious and / or literate.   (STREET DATE - 2/23/2018)

***"Originally released as a limited 7" on the band's own Wau Records label, this WAU Y LOS ARRRGHS!!! single sold out in a flash at their farewell gig in May 2017. Copies of the OG press are selling for stupid bucks online, so we reissued it, this time around with brand new cover art from Canuck lo-brow illustrator hero DARREN MERINUK, and souped up vinyl mastering by Crypt Records honcho TIM WARREN. These are, without a doubt, two of the most action packed punk blasts we've ever heard from Wau and the gang, and it's now available again, worldwide for the first time." (STREET DATE - 2/02/2018)

***Greek freak-rock has finally slithered its way into the Black Gladiator stable after years of us trying to keep everything as America-centric—as the birthplace of rock’n’roll—as possible. Sometimes you just glom onto a sound that stimulates your cochlea in such a manner that its origin becomes as meaningless as rock’n’roll itself. Athens duo HAND & LEG is the unit that has popped our intercontinental cherry with their debut, self-titled album of throbbing arthouse post-punk, sonically akin to the more stripped-down elements of the French glue-wave scene. IRO (bass guitar) and STELIOS (drums) bleed gross distortion over grinding sex beats with precision, alternating vox on tributes to unlikely American folk gods Dave van Ronk and Lester Bangs, while channeling the traditional, Minoan minimal music of Crete to complete their primitive manifesto: The Kritikal Beatdown. LP is limited to a one-and-done press of 500 copies.

***Our global travels searching for the wildest rock’n’roll sounds in existence has so far only yielded one release from a Japanese band (Raydios), until now. To commemorate Slovenly 200, we present, from Kobe, GŪTARA KYŌ, and their self-titled vinyl debut on our Mondo Mongo imprint. Gutara Kyo (roughly translated: crazy slovenlies) reminds us of our earliest experiences with hardcore punk as teenagers, pulsing blood to the skull and clotting. There is a youthful fury and hilarity in every track, with painful, ear-piercing skree from start to finish, harnessing both the loose garage punk swagger of Teengenerate and the blistering hardcore attack of Los Crudos with MATSUMOTO-SAN shrieking in Japanese for the duration. Previously only available as a CD on Bakudan (JP), this new edition comes on a large-hole 10-inch platter and features an insert with lyrics translated to English by GREG SNAZZ. Mastered for vinyl by TIM WARREN. (STREET DATE - 12/01/2017)

***This is the second album by THE MONSIEURS, from Brookline, MA. It is called Deux, and if you were expecting anything other than the heaping pile of distorted real rock’n’roll mess that you’ve come to know and love from ANDY "CALIFORNIA" MACBAIN and crew, then you’ve got another thing comin’ pal o’ mine. You get NOTHING new here but a fresh batch of tunes that somehow hasn’t been pulled out of the pop swamp song book ass until now, delivered with the violent abandon of a dirty rat front man and the two bruising blonde foxes that are his driving force. It’s never not a good time to slap a record like this on, and it’s always a good time when you slap a record like this on. (STREET DATE - 12/01/2017)

Leisure Opportunity by Proto Idiot

Leisure Opportunity

***Welcome to the rock’n’roll manifestation of Eddie Murphy’s 1987 Raw concert. If you haven’t seen it or listened to it lately, it’s a remarkable, rapid-fire onslaught of hilarity that rages with new ideas and jokes that you hadn’t heard before at every turn, and Eddie never misses a beat. Enter Leisure Opportunity by PROTO IDIOT—né ANDREW ANDERSON, also of Manchester’s THE HIPSHAKES, and his pals CALLUM DARLEY (drums) and MICHAEL SEAL (bass). “If you like that, then you’ll love this” is the maniacal chant on “I’m An Artist.” Hear it enough and you’ll believe it! The Eddie Murphy parallels shouldn’t be too much of a stretch, but if it seems a bit obtuse, think Ray Davies with Attention Deficit Disorder. Better? Either way, Leisure Opportunity is no comedy album, per se, but it’s riddled with humor on both the musical and lyrical fronts. (STREET DATE - 11/03/2017)

The Night Is So Dark by Sites N' Sounds

The Night Is So Dark
Slovenly

***Black Gladiator and Slovenly are back with another archival '60s punk release, this time from an impossibly rare Delta, Pennsylvania 45 by SITES N' SOUNDS. Gigging from Baltimore to York to Hershey in the mid-60s, including an appearance on Baltimore's Kerby Scott TV program, Sites n' Sounds were students at Kennard-Dale High School when they recorded this absolutely genius single at Courier Recordings studio in Fremont, MD, releasing it on Ohio's CEI Records label in 1967. We dug up this 45 towards the end of 2016, listened to it about 100 times in a row that evening, and began researching the band the next day, which resulted in locating organ player MIKE MCFADDEN in our own backyard. He provided insanely cool band photos—two of which are reprinted in full color for the 7-inch insert. When we alerted Crypt Records honcho Tim Warren to the discovery, he declared it an "unknown MONSTER mooder!" and applied his loving and astute mastering touch for re-release. We couldn't be more proud to present this haunting teenbeat single to the world 50 years later.

A Gut Feeling
Slovenly

***Slovenly Recordings is proud to present A Gut Feeling—the fifth foot-long (their 3rd for us!) from Sardinian rhythm ‘n’ beat powerhouse THE RIPPERS! Super tough mod-punk snarl and freak-beat floorstompers with galloping tom-toms on “Pain” recall Billy Childish‘s Native American worship channeling Buddy Holly, while “No One Cares” delivers hair-splitting harp wail in the grand tradition of Slim Harpo’s finest Excello Records sides as interpreted by The UK’s sharpest degenerate 60s rockers. “Stop to Drive Me Mad” is as fresh a sound as you’re ever gonna hear from these musical luddites, and tipping the hat to The Creation is as proggy as you’ll get from our heroes primitivi.

***BACK IN STOCK!!! At long last, Black Gladiator and Slovenly boldly present the first ever reissue of the infamous Eat Hot Lead LP from San Fernando Valley’s PUKE SPIT & GUTS! Fully authorized by the band’s surviving members, this is a ten-years-in-the-making project that was originally slated for re-release by Alternative Tentacles.   A crew of spirited So. Cal. weirdos, as opposed to mere punks, Puke Spit & Guts released the LP on their own Important Records label in 1980. Members DONNY DEATH, CAPTAIN WORM, DICK HEAD (real name!), MARIE MANSLAUGHTER and STUICIDE assembled this absurdist and raunchy LP with the unholy shrieks of human beings being fed into a countertop blender between each track. On the opening cut—the 'PS&G Theme'—Death declares most bizarrely and brazenly 'Sex Pistols couldn’t hold their liquor, Ramones wear tennis shoes! Alice Cooper is a party pooper, we’re the punk band for youuuu!' On 'Kill for Kicks' he proclaims 'I’m so tired, I’m so bored, I don’t wanna live no more! Life is a fucker and I’m a whore!' And it only gets weirder from there. Marie Manslaughter lets you know if you wanna get some of her fine lovin’ you gotta get with some self-mutilation on 'Send Me Your Ear,' and even then, anal sex is outta the question on 'You Ain’t Never.' We’re not even gonna attempt to tell you What Captain Worm is yelling about on the title track.   This one-in-a-million scumbag rarity makes a killer companion to your...
