***Assembled by Vancouver punk rock journalist and THE EVAPORATORS singer NARDWUAR THE HUMAN SERVIETTE, Busy Doing Nothing! features ANDREW WK, FRANZ FERDINAND, THE CRIBS, FUAD AND THE FEZTONES, KATE NASH, JILL BARBER and SAGE FRANCIS all showing their love for Canadian punk heritage preservation! Side A kicks off with an original collaboration by Andrew WK and The Evaporators. The action continues with Wakefield, England’s The Cribs covering ’70s Vancouver punk band The Dishrags, London’s Kate Nash covering ’90s Vancouver “cuddle-core” band (and Mint Records’ signature act) Cub, and Franz Ferdinand’s rendition of the legendary Pointed Sticks’ “Real Thing.” Fuad & the Feztones, Bobby Beaton and John Davis from Montreal’s veteran garage punk band The Gruesomes, offer their take on The Evaporators’ first single from 1992, and Sage Francis raps on a verse of The Evaporators’ “Hot Dog High.” The Evaporators rule side B, delivering a number of original tunes plus covers of 1970s rockabilly truck driver Doug Rutledge (featuring Andrew WK and Canadian singer / songwriter Jill Barber) and The Pointed Sticks. The album closes with a clip from the first interview Nardwuar ever did with Franz Ferdinand. This fantastic collection also includes a free 40-page 2013 calendar of vintage 1970s punk rock photos taken by renowned Vancouver photographer Bev Davies!

***“We hear a lot about Brooklyn, Montreal and San Francisco, but think Vancouver’s music community is the best around. The CiTR/Mint Pop Alliance Compilation is just that—a snapshot of our rainy city on a Friday night in 2011. It features 11 prominent local bands including NO KIDS, KELLARISSA (P:ANO, THE CHOIR PRACTICE), FINE MIST, SLAM DUNK, APOLLO GHOSTS and many more. The songs, labour, mastering and artwork were donated and proceeds from the record will benefit CiTR 101.9 FM, the campus radio station where Mint Records began. Tiny trimmings from CiTR’s Duncan McHugh’s beard and Mint Shena’s cat’s hair were mixed into the molten vinyl during the manufacturing process (Not really. But you get the picture, this record was made possible by several people with a lot of love).” Hand-numbered edition of 300 copies pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

Just in time to celebrate the 2004 holiday season came Mint Records' second Christmas release, It's a Team Mint Xmas Vol. 2! You may recall Vol. 1, a snappy, now out of print, 7" record that featured five holiday-themed songs from your pals at Mint Records and their friends just four years prior. It's a Team Mint Xmas Vol. 2 contains those five classic songs and piles a few more on to make a 13 song CD that goes well with your holiday stuffing and couple glasses of wine. Best of all It's a Team Mint Xmas Vol. 2 contains a little gem you don't want to miss: The Buttless Chaps' version of Band-Aid's classic "Do They Know It's Christmas"! The track features a variety of Mint artists: Carolyn Mark, Coco Culbertson (The Gay, The Choir Practice), Grant Lawrence (The Smugglers, CBC Radio 3), Ida Nilsen (The Gay, The Beans, Radiogram, The Buttless Chaps) Katie Sketch (The Organ), Tobey Black (The Gay, Maow), Maija Martin (The Gay, The Tennessee Twin, I Mudder Accordion), and Paul and Lucy (Young and Sexy).

***Fabrice, 17 years old, is a minet, or to say it better, a mod from one of the posh neighbourhoods, the 16th district in Paris and such “golden ghettoes” as Auteuil, Neuilly and Passy. Fab’ likes to have his “ronron at the Dugstore”, as Dutronc sang it (an untranslatable wordplay on ronron, “cat food”, and a minet—“a kitten”—purring). Fabrice attends Henri IV prestigious high-school; his father, a businessman who made a fortune selling plastic flowers, and his mother, a former model from Jacques Fath, are never home – a cosy home indeed! With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip. He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles. The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves. We imagine those magic years 1966-71 (with two inclusions from 1976 & 77) to have been as you can hear it here — truly decadent pop-sike, as beautiful as the cathedral of Evry... whether it's the arch-hippie Lolita taking us beyond the limits of pop music, singing songs which make one dream of Anicée Alvina riding her bicycle in a red...

"'Play That Beat Mr. Raja' is a gobsmacking compilation of recordings made for the Tamil film industry, taking in all manner of bizarre mid-late '80s sonics in the most beguiling, mindblowing manner. Like Charanjit Singh's 'Ten Raga's To A Disco Beat' or the Tafo Brothers' 'Plugged-in Pakistani Pops' it's an ear-opening exposé of the nascent, yet hugely sophisticated, electronic productions from this part of the world, making for a potently intoxicating experience to these Western sensibilities. To be fair, we're being a bit broad there, as this sound is really most specific to the Kollywood film industry based in the South Indian city of Chennai (formerly Madras) at the opposite end of the sub continent to Charanjit Singh and the Tafo Bros. It was compiled by the obsessives over at Cartilage Records, a team of Parisian bloggers/DJs and runs through eleven ecstatic fusions of truly insane drum machine acrobatics, slashing cinematic strings, the nuttiest analog synth sounds and the most charming vocals with an innate feel for daring structures and delirious composition. The sense of freedom and creativity is utterly endearing, placing familiar western concepts in a whole other context to leave us floored at every turn. Take the almost avian vocals and fractal arrangement of Japanil Kalyanaraman's opening 'Title Music' (1985) for starters, then just try keeping your composure when the machine funk and vocoders of Vikram's 'Vikram Vikram' (1986) hit, because we certainly couldn't! There's just too much to sink into, from the demented drum flurries of Mangamma...

It’s summertime, and the living’s sun-drenched and sleep-deprived on our end. The latest entry in Tigerbeat6’s ¡Andalé! Vol. 4 is a nice little soundtrack for after-hours, before-hours, and between-dreamtime partying. Put this on and ignore your pulls toward natural circadian rhythms and lack of darkness in the day – and if you don’t live as far up north as Berlin, just substitute with plenty of cigarette butts, dry heat and lakeside barbecues. As to the music? TB6 mainstay Luke’s Anger starts it off hyped with “Chronicles Of Funktronica”, with 8-bit squeals and guttery ejaculations (stop giggling) to hit you right in the solar plexus. Continuing with the 8bit trills, there’s the butcher-block beats on “Go Bananas”, from Bruce Stallion. Get smacked with the bowel-emptying wobbles you’d expect from the guy whose last EP featured tracks titled “Drugs = Bad” and “Sunglasses”. Now we’re Frenching a bit, as TB6’s BlattCouture delivers a take on fellow countrymen dDamage’s “JB Savage”, from the latter group’s EP 100% Hate. The pummel of the original is still there, but now you can jump to it (essential for a summer night groove). Baseck finishes things up handily with a track to shout about (literally, he’s screaming himself horse), the vocal mix of “Unbalanced”. You ever eat a bunch of candy and stay up all night playing videogames? Baseck did, and then hooked an IV up to a mixer. Check the blood sugar.

***The era of the Ethiopian big brass bands came to an end in the period of 1975-1991. In the last few years something new is emerging. Young producers have started combining traditional rhythms & strong dance beat production. The result is very original, uplifting & very danceable music. The gurage, wollo, gondar, konso and other traditional rhythms work wonders for this new dance music. And the Ethiopian youth loves it. No Export.

¡Ándale! Vol. 3 kicks off with a newcomer to the Tigerbeat6 family, Vaetxk a.k.a. Rob Clouth, and his stellar offkilter Glitch IDM masterpiece “List of Lists”, with its binaural sound design and beats that refuse to stick to any time signature we know you will be thirsting for more. Obi Blanche is best known for his work with Finland’s New Judas label as well as remixes for Boy 8 Bit, Les Gillettes, Zombie Nation, The Raveonettes, and his sweaty electro DJ sets in clubs across europe. We are quite pleased to present his more experimental and wildside with “Doorombroom”, also on his upcoming “The Lost Tapes” album on Tigerbeat6. Joe Lentini appears courtesy of Miami’s one and only Schematic Records family. He is one of the brightest lights in America’s new crop of underground and challenging electronic music producers, and we are sure he will move onto bigger things with his cut and paste spastic funky club crossover tracks. Duran Duran Duran gave us this killer hard-to-find Otto Van Schirach remix of “Bass Galactica 8” from his vaults and it definitely deserves to be heard again and again and again. Dolby Anol finish things off with the most surprising track they have ever made, “Naboomboo”, featuring UK vocalist Beccakhan. It sounds like The Bug jamming with Modeselektor in a middle eastern harem with a demented female MC on the Mic. And we love it. This month’s cover image comes courtesy of visual artist Paul Mares.

***A collection of weird dance music. Solitude need not be a destination. What you’ll find here is the work of six acts who use isolation as an escape hatch into vaster internal realms, zones for transmitting untethered from the mores and strictures of music scene etiquette. The tracks here are not ‘done things’—instead, in bedroom retreat, working feet from where they sleep each night, PATTEN and PROTECT-U, PARIAH and BATCHCRONES, DUNIAN and D’EON are free to conjure impressions of the club’s invisible parts. Those that loiter between its sweating walls, ceilings and pillars. Some hear purity, some hear slime. Some of The Bedroom Club sounds written in the dark hours beyond shut bars, while other moments seem to anticipate the club’s unifying noise and ooze with the wide-eyes found bursting most often from the desirous, waiting skulls of the underage. All of them, by inference, honour the value of the most private portal, where the digital air snares strike into can hold still-quivering cuts of ecstatic rib-meat as easily as they can harbour the chrome heart of some colossal jet. It's the idea that counts—here are intimate ones, for you. Windows to auteured territories for you to prise. UK import.

¡Ándale! Vol. 2 jumps off in style with “Ing Zorg 2” from Dead Fader, UK’s truly subversive dubstep/noise duo. It’s a blistering remake of “JBE Zorg”, from their now classic “Corrupt My Examiner” album. Berlin’s Positive Self & Miffy give us “Shindig Nation”, a completely original and unique blending of braindance melodics and hard club beats. Tigerbeat6 veteran Kevin Blechdom joins up with occasional collaborator Ad Hawk for “Frankenstein”, a magical mess of mutant general MIDI madness you can both hum along and dance to. Sweden’s Hakan Lidbo steps out of from his usual dance producer persona for blistering chiptune noise rawk with “Lab-rats.” Most surprisingly, we have Ed Flis – more commonly known for his many recordings as Duran Duran Duran – with his first release under his own name, and it’s a massive glitchy techno stomper, as well produced as it is relentless. The cover image (Untitled Biological Landscape No. 2, Acrylic on wood panel, 25 x 25cm, 2008) comes courtesy of stellar visual artist Ryan Hays.

***“S.S. Records is pleased to present the first vinyl edition of the FM-BX Society Tape Vol. 1. Originally released in 1981 on only cassette, with a limited run of 200, FM-BX V1 was the first in a series of compilation tapes released by the staff of a radio station in Brussels, Belgium. Needless to say, not many tapes made it around, and very few survive today. I’d say that is a shame but with this vinyl release, the word will get out about the bands on this tape, albeit a few decades after its initial release! FM-BX V1 features three bands, two from Belgium, one from Scotland. The Belgium bands are ISOLATION WARD and UNIT 4. Isolation Ward are known in underground synth collector circles, as they had a bit of a run after their debut on this release. Bleak and futuristic, Isolation Ward fuse post punk with early 80s synth sounds and a DIY approach. The stars of FM-BX are the all-woman foursome Unit 4. Little is known about the band or their current whereabouts. No problem because their music is all you need to tell you that they had something special going. By their sound, the influences are obvious: Kleenex, Delta 5, and the Raincoats all reverberate here though less ‘slick’ than any of those bands. Unit 4’s aesthetics are more akin to the Petticoats and, at times, the Shaggs. This is truly wonderful punk rock. From Scotland comes the TOPPLERS. If the name sounds familiar, it is...

***This long-in-development compilation is finally seeing the light of day. Featuring three of Canada’s best post-punk acts coupled with three of San Diego’s, this 12-inch highlights the common ground that acts in both countries share. DEFEKTORS deliver a blast of punk energy with “Not the One”; O VOIDS contribute their lurching “Crawling Machine”; hot off their HoZac and Mammoth Cave Records 7-inch, SHARP ENDS debuts their best track yet, “Whiteout,” a scorching, noisy post-punk anthem. On the US side, San Diego’s ALE MANIA follow up their Volar Records and Hell Yes! Records 7-inches with the great, chaotic “Fawkus”; BEATERS offer up the pulsating “They Don’t Really Care About Us”; and SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY turn in their first new track since their Sacred Bones 7-inch, “Where is the Light”. 45 RPM, 100 on white vinyl, 400 on black, all handmade covers.

“Regolith” is a term used by lunar scientists to describe the loose scree of stones covering the solid rock of the moon. From the scrappy fuzzabilly of the Leisure Birds’ “Burn the Beach” to Moonstone’s pontificate-n-jam, Moon Glyph have found an apt title for their first compilation of local bands. Regolith Vol.1 is a wide sampling of songs scattershot across a solid foundation of rock by artists committed to the exploration of new vibrations and frequencies. The listener will find all forms of psychedelia on this record: laid back odes to laid-back women from Magic Castles and Velvet Davenport (with a little help from Ariel Pink and Gary War), a rave-up from Vampire Hands, a spaced out war-drum workout from the Daughters of the Sun, and a pair of face-melters courtesy of The Blind Shake and Skoal Kodiak amongst others.

The Widower is a surreal black romantic comedy featuring familiar faces like Jello Biafra, Joey "Shithead" Keithley, Ani Kyd and Nardwuar the Human Serviette. It’s a creepy, kitschy comedy about love and death, blood, cops, and donuts, that has some surprisingly sweet touches among the corpses, punk rock and out-sized characters! This here is the incredible previously unreleased soundtrack! The previously unreleased soundtrack CD features Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, DOA, The Smugglers, Chris Houston, The Astronuts, The Loudmouths, Huevos Rancheros, Bughouse 5, Coal, Thee Goblins, Elvis Love Child, The Mach III's, Sarcastic Mannequins, The Problematics and The Colorifics. The soundtrack is not available as a separate CD - rather it comes bundled with the DVD or as digital download only. About the movie : With The Widower, director Marcus Rogers has created an instant cult classic. Inspired by the sinister visions of David Lynch and the colorful, comic book camp of John Waters, the film is a cartoonish world of decay in a timeless, nameless city, where the very fringes of reality are starting to unravel. This is especially true for Milton, the nebbish romantic widower who is unable to face the reality of his wife's demise... But why should he? She still talks to him.

***Received a 7.0 rating from Pitchfork. It's true--the sons and daughters of Homestead, Xpressway and first-wave Drag City (et al.) are now making good music. The '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s are all there, bound together by shitty tape machines, reverb and easy chord changes, but melody is back and so is the joy of jamming a perfectly mangled pop song. Welcome Home might hit some new kids the way Human Music or Nuggets did back in their day. In any case, it's one of those rare compilations you can play straight through and over again. --Glenn Donaldson All tracks (excepting WHITE FENCE’s “The Love Between”) are exclusive to this release.

"All of them sparkling clean digital hand-jobs (of late) got me to thinking about the years I spent renting a room above a former farmer's garage, dubbing tapes when my better-minded friends were going to college and/or fucking with crystal meth. Time flies (except when you are constantly typing in 0s and 1s to get someone's laptop to cum) and certainly somewhere, a 16-year-old kid is online awaiting some hilarious critiques of the 20th anniversary Shrimper compilation Smooth Sounds: The Future Hits of Wckr Spgt double-CD: 36 exclusive songs specifically written for this project by Wckr Spgt and then given out blindly to the artists participating. With close to 200 releases under our belt and hundreds of artists that have recorded for the label, it was near impossible to choose bands for this project, so blindly into the depths of the third circle went we. "Smooth Sounds features key Shrimper acts (Soul-Junk, Sentridoh, Joy, The Mountain Goats, Simon Joyner, Jad Fair), recordings by artists from the surrounding environs that influenced the label (Norma Tanega, Kurt Ross, John Harrelson) and over a dozen new bands to keep intact the spirit of what a Shrimper compilation is supposed to be. The first pressing features covers lovingly hand-decorated by artists who have recorded for the Shrimper label, as well as extensive liner notes by Franklin Bruno. There are a number of festivals set to take place on July 24th, the official 20th anniversary of Shrimper, in Southern California, Virginia, England and New York,...
