***A collection of weird dance music. Solitude need not be a destination. What you’ll find here is the work of six acts who use isolation as an escape hatch into vaster internal realms, zones for transmitting untethered from the mores and strictures of music scene etiquette. The tracks here are not ‘done things’—instead, in bedroom retreat, working feet from where they sleep each night, PATTEN and PROTECT-U, PARIAH and BATCHCRONES, DUNIAN and D’EON are free to conjure impressions of the club’s invisible parts. Those that loiter between its sweating walls, ceilings and pillars. Some hear purity, some hear slime. Some of The Bedroom Club sounds written in the dark hours beyond shut bars, while other moments seem to anticipate the club’s unifying noise and ooze with the wide-eyes found bursting most often from the desirous, waiting skulls of the underage. All of them, by inference, honour the value of the most private portal, where the digital air snares strike into can hold still-quivering cuts of ecstatic rib-meat as easily as they can harbour the chrome heart of some colossal jet. ***“S.S. Records is pleased to present the first vinyl edition of the FM-BX Society Tape Vol. 1. Originally released in 1981 on only cassette, with a limited run of 200, FM-BX V1 was the first in a series of compilation tapes released by the staff of a radio station in Brussels, Belgium. Needless to say, not many tapes made it around, and very few survive today. I’d say that is a shame but with this vinyl release, the word will get out about the bands on this tape, albeit a few decades after its initial release! FM-BX V1 features three bands, two from Belgium, one from Scotland. The Belgium bands are ISOLATION WARD and UNIT 4. Isolation Ward are known in underground synth collector circles, as they had a bit of a run after their debut on this release. Bleak and futuristic, Isolation Ward fuse post punk with early 80s synth sounds and a DIY approach. The stars of FM-BX are the all-woman foursome Unit 4. Little is known about the band or their current whereabouts. No problem because their music is all you need to tell you that they had something special going. By their sound, the influences are obvious: Kleenex, Delta 5, and the Raincoats all reverberate here though less ‘slick’ than any of those bands. Unit 4’s aesthetics are more akin to the Petticoats and, at times, the Shaggs. This is truly wonderful punk rock. From Scotland comes the TOPPLERS. If the name sounds familiar, it is...

Thankfully there are people in this world like Mr. Cherrystones who patiently waited to rock a psychedelic block party from London to NYC with his new compilation Cherrystones Word. Debut release on the Tlon Uqbor label, fierce spawn of contemporary psych repository Holy Mountain.  Reflecting his punk rock roots, but coming out at a hip-hop angle with an astounding knowledge of music and a native intuition of how to tear shit up in clubs, Cherrystones is the sound of psychedelia-soundtracks-folk-rock-prog-noise-moog-and-library-records.   Cherrystones is also an excavator of exciting, seemingly unfamiliar genres. Many heavy sounds that are held in high regard now were first uncovered on his previous compilations Cherrystones Rocks (Lo Recordings) and Hidden Charms.   Cherrystones is a music lover first and foremost, who happens to be a beat-digger par excellence. His compilations have a beautiful flow like a radio transmission from planet dada. This personal-journey-by-DJ is genuinely disarming as he uncovers track after track that thrills through being dusted down for fresh consumption, from the Led Zeppelin-esque qualities of Dead Moon to the crazed, Dylan-like The Deviants. What could be more of an accidental tribute (as this was put together before his sad passing) to the late, great Arthur Lee than the Midnight Circus?  Comps are two-a-penny, but none are as solid or brimful...
