I reckon i first started recording this number back when mick flower was sequestered by the volcano. by that i mean his visit to the USA touring with MV & EE as part of the GOLDEN ROAD was extended when his flight home was delayed due to "nature". so we hung around in vermont for several days jamming some more/canoeing/barbequeing…i had a bunch of new songs lined up that were ready to seed so i showed 'em to mick at my home studio maximum arousal farm and we partied on for awhile with "before it's gone". the structure/vibe was there and we slung some hash, basically just letting the fingers do the walking while he sunned himself with the BIG riff. felt groovy…dude is a GREAT artist and i got to sketch with him. so over the next few summers i developed it. my good friend arbitrary signs spectre folk magik marker pete nolan had just moved up to the pioneer valley and i thought it would be cool to get together by having him guest on the tune with some background vocals. i went down and hung out in his fly by night home studio and we got it on. welcome to the hood! he's got such sweet mojo and no one ever really talks about his vocal zone, which i always felt was right there and perfect velvet side of gone. my kinda tone. speaking of killer harmony tone float, jeremy earl from woods was visiting on one...

if I were to give a sobriquet to my one man band/guitar army of one I'd call it wet tuna. live behind the name...but I went vintage like all those private press folk in the loners & stoners bag. went with the MV thing. somethin' about the vibe of those dank 60's/70's singer songwriters nude under their own grace. accountable. I saw de la soul once at a house party on strong island...drove a ways. I dig chill...high and rising. saw the freeport exit on the way between a circus and sewer, cranked a VU boot. I met davy graham once but he said "I'm not the Davy Graham you know". I've always dug jorma...acoustic & electric -> imagine if that's what i named our dog. spectrasound. wet channel, wetware…DIG, back in 1999 i founded a label called THE CHILD OF MICROTONES TERRAN LIBRARY OF EXPLORATORY MUSIC, C.O.M. for short. it was named after a joseph jarman/art ensemble quote…we released "intimate" music, music for one…or 99. back in the day the third "private press" we did on our label was reissued on wax by nemo. this C.O.M. is also on time-lag. #99. go figure. blazing grace, hashtag love.   THIS IS C.O.M. 47!  special guests: spanish wolfman, p.g. six, mick flower, erika elder, j mascis, meg baird, pete nolan, carson arnold, jeremy earl, muskox, rongoose.

Massive, expansive new Matt ‘MV’ Valentine double album “Midden Mound”. Featuring a host of guest performers, including Erika Elder, J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Jeremy Earl (Woods/Woodsist), P.G. Six and Michael Flower. An 11-track combination of sprawling jams including the incredible Rudy Rucker inspired “Freeware” and beautiful songs. A truly wondrous, sun-blinded, summer stoner record that throws its sandals in the duffel bag, lets the sand slip through its toes and tramps off in the direction of a mirage of a gigantic effigy of Ganesh. Availalbe on pro-printed / dubbed cassette and deluxe CDR.

***Received a 7.0 rating from Pitcfork. If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine has released that definitely shouldn’t be filed under a group name (Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone. The gout of LPs, cassettes, CDRs, singles and 10-inches emerging from Maximum Arousal Farm has dwarfed the output of everyone ’cept maybe Sunburned or Thurston. Regardless, there can never be enough MV LPs in the world, and What I Became is a beaut. Most of it is as solo as Satan, apart from percussionist Jeremy Earl (of Woods fame), whose presence is sometimes felt more than heard. Erika “EE” Elder and Mike “Muskox” Smith also pop up on a track, but the general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick Slim. As usual, MV’s tunes and procedures beggar easy generification. Elements of deep forest psychedelia brush against Crazy Horse guitar / vocal flourishes that explode to reveal volk-based form mayhem at its hickiest. My particular fave here is “PK Dick,” a paean to nth dimensional logic in the form of a Swedish psych-folk readymade. My son prefers the haunted-Harvest-vibe (his words) of “ Ave. B.” My wife goes for the Seventh Sons approach offered by “Sweet...
