West Coast Power Outage II by Dodge Jones Rage

Dodge Jones Rage

West Coast Power Outage II
Charnel Music

***The DODGE JONES RAGE power trio was started in late 2021 as a distributed pandemic-driven experimental-noise-audio collaboration by three long-time grizzled sonic veterans. After sharing some initial recordings with each other, suddenly things started moving quickly, and it was clear that this was destined to be, as they say, A Thing. As of now, there’s a cassette, an LP, and a CD, all named West Coast Power Outage, numbered I, II, and III. This one is of course number II, the LP: four tracks of heavy-duty surreal noise, two long and two short on each side of vinyl. Adorned with artwork by PAUL VAN TRIGT. instilled with audio mastered by GRANT RICHARDSON, it’s a blast of intense, nonsensical, alien-imbued weirdo scuzz. Play it for your in-laws, they’ll thank you. CHRIS DODGE (SPAZZ, TRAPPIST, INFEST, DESPISE YOU, STIKKY, Slap A Ham Records, etc.), MASON JONES (TRANCE, SUBARACHNOID SPACE, COLLISION STORIES, NUMINOUS EYE, TERMINAL STRESS). WILLIAM RAGE (BLUE SABBATH BLACK CHEER, NERVOUS CORPS., AT JENNIE RICHIE, HAPPINESS FOREVER, NEW BLOCKADERS, THE GERMANS, irr.app.(ext.), et al.). Edition of 100 copies.

***Recorded on January 28, 2020, this was the last session the COLLISION STORIES quartet played before, as the title says, the darkness of the pandemic and lockdown brought collaborations to a halt. It was a lovely, lively session and after listening back the band decided to share it with the world as their first vinyl release (6th overall). Improvised and recorded in real time, this session is presented as two side-long pieces with minimal editing having been done. The sounds flow from peaceful to heavy, surreal to grounded, revealing the reactions of the players to each other’s shifts and moods. The instrumentation included electronic and mechanical, new and old. The four members of San Francisco's Collision Stories came together in 2014 after having encountered each other over a number of years, crossing paths here and there as they wove their strands through the experimental, psychedelic, improvisational, electronics, and avant-garde scenes. Due to their varied viewpoints, it’s not easy to draw a line around the territory staked out by the quartet. Entirely improvised, their work shows deep listening and careful interplay that can move in moments from intense energy to wide-open drifting expanses. All of the members have extensive resumes as musicians, composers, visual artists, writers, and creators in general. Edition of 300 copies on black vinyl.

Permanence, Perseverance, Persistence by Jones, Mason

Jones, Mason

Permanence, Perseverance, Persistence
Charnel Music

***After the pandemic sent us all home, live noise shows moved online, and paradoxically made it easier to “play” while giving it all sort of an artificial feeling as we pre-recorded “live” video and then watched ourselves while interacting via chat. Weirdly fun but not quite the same thing. In the process of doing a number of shows this way, MASON JONES ended up with a noisemaking setup in place in the studio, and started constructing an assemblage of pieces recorded direct to stereo. These are almost exclusively played on a “chopped guitar”, a very cheap guitar cut down to fit in a suitcase, with a shortened neck and reduced body size. Played table-top, it provides the physical interaction and organic sound source, then processed through an array of effects. Here and there are occasional other bits of sound: an old analog synth, a full-sized guitar, and even some vocal noises. These intense noise recordings were then cut and assembled into the two side-long pieces presented here: “Permanence” on side A, and “Perseverance or Persistence” on side B. The title refers to an appreciation for the folks in the noise scene finding ways to stay connected and continue sharing and working together even while everyone’s stuck at home. After all these years of creating an international noise community, everyone perseveres. Mason Jones is an avant-garde and psych-noise musician, and owner/operator of the Charnel Music label since 1990. Recording as TRANCE beginning in the late '80s, he founded the band SUBARACHNOID...

***Back in the spring of 2007, NUMINOUS EYE—MASON JONES (SUBARACHNOID SPACE, COLLISION STORIES) and MIKE SHOUN (PEACERS, ex-OH SEES)—had a short tour of Japan planned. All the shows were booked and plane tickets purchased. Then they discovered that DAMO SUZUKI, vocalist from the infamous band CAN, was visiting Japan around the same time, and he was free to play on March 8—the date they would be arriving in Japan! It was providence, so it was arranged for them to play together, and Damo invited percussionist STEVE ETO as well. Playing an improvised show, with no planning ahead of time, after a transcontinental flight, was probably not wise, but it was psychedelic. And it was great. After a sparse opening piece, Mike and Steve were locked in on drums and percussion, Damo was flowing, and Mason found ways to wind the guitar into it all. This album is an edited sampling from the show, including the opening piece, the ending piece, and a portion from the middle. It covers the calm, the heavy, and the experimental aspects. Damo provided the appropriately wild album and song titles. Edition of 300 copies on black vinyl.
