***In 2008 punk veterans NOFX released an 8-part TV docu-series called NOFX: Backstage Passport, which followed the band’s ill-fated attempts to take punk rock to the unconquered corners of the globe. The mayhem that ensued was a mix of hilarious moments and crazy snafus that resulted in some shows on the tour being canceled. Over the following four years NOFX set out to make up several shows in Mexico, Peru and Colombia that got derailed on their first attempt. Not surprisingly there were just as many bumps in the road this time around: inner-band meltdowns, shady promoters, tear gas, fires, drugs, an 8.8 earthquake and, of course, riot cops. ***Known for his career with legendary punk band SWINGIN’ UTTERS, DARIUS KOSKI’s abilities as a song writer and musician are undeniable. ***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! By 1989’s Brain Drain, the RAMONES’ eleventh and least compelling album, the band appeared creatively exhausted. Rather than pick up a New York City/CBGB has-been to fill the enormous shoes left by departing bassist Dee Dee Ramone, the band chose CHRISTOPHER JOSEPH WARD, a young punk kid fresh out of the Marine Corps. Christened CJ RAMONE, the band hit the road in 1989 on an extensive world tour that culminated in 1991’s Loco Live album. Clearly reenergized, the Ramones’ first studio record with CJ—1992’s Mondo Bizarro—was their strongest album in over a decade and a return to the classic Ramones punk rock form that they’d slipped in and out of throughout the 1980s in their search for more mainstream success. CJ R sang lead on two songs including “Strenth to Endure,” a true Ramones classic. Singing lead on three songs from 1994’s covers album, Acid Eaters and four songs on the Ramones’ swan song, “¡Adios Amigos!,” including his own tune, “Scattergun” (Joey sang another CJ original, “Got a Lot to Say”), CJ Ramone was coming into his own as a lead vocalist and songwriter. After the Ramones disbanded in 1996, CJ Ramone continued making music, honing his singing and songwriting skills in LOS GUSANOS and BAD CHOPPER before releasing Reconquista in 2012, his first official album as CJ Ramone. ***GET DEAD, the latest band to join the Fat Wreck family, is an electric/acoustic punk rock band hailing from San Francisco. They were originally drawn together by their love for punk rock, joy of acoustic impurities, desire to keep music simple, and on a lesser scale, their shared affinity for the drink. In fact, Get Dead’s first band practice allegedly consisted solely of hollowing out some pineapples, filling them with rum, and “getting sticky”, as SAM (lead singer) puts it. Regardless of their unorthodox start, they did eventually get on track and have since been creating some of the most earnest and satisfying punk rock around. After a couple years of playing famously raucous shows in the Bay Area the band’s song writing ability caught the ear of NOFX front man Fat Mike. He offered to produce their next album, Bad News, and it’s got the melodies and hooks to prove it. Bad News features 12 intriguing tracks driven by Sam’s raspy and captivating melodies. Musically, Bad News walks a genre tightrope melding traditional punk rock and acoustic instrumentation (including accordion, horns, and other accents), yet never losing its balance between the two. In the holiday spirit, everyone’s favorite punk rock pranksters decided to take aim at two of our most beloved celebrations with their new 7” Xmas Has Been X’ed / New Year’s Revolution. Because NOFX didn’t want to play favorites between berating Xmas and New Years, they made the 7” a double A-side, giving both title tracks a shared billing and their own full artwork. “Xmas Has Been X’ed” appeared on NOFX’s most recent album, Self Entitled, while “New Year’s Revolution” was recorded specifically for this 7”. The band also threw in a little bonus by adding a recently rerecorded and refreshed version of the rarity “Wore Out the Soles of My Party Boots”. All three tracks show the whip-smart sense of humor NOFX are known for and are paired with their signature speedy melodic instrumentation. ***As the currently reigning champs of the ska/punk genre LESS THAN JAKE have amassed legions of faithful followers over the years. With their 20th anniversary falling during 2012 the band decided to commemorate this notable milestone by creating a yearlong event, which saw the band travel far and wide (US, Europe, Japan, South America) to bring their wacky, high-flying live show to their droves fans. With so much touring planned Less Than Jake really wanted to make the celebration something special, so they recorded not one, but two different tour EPs. Greetings From Less Than Jake and Seasons Greetings From Less Than Jake were both 5 song eps the band manufactured on their own and sold on CD, exclusively at the shows they played over the course of 2012. After the party had wound down and the year-long anniversary tour came to an end the band had an idea. With the two EPs comprising some of the strongest material they had written in years and given the limited nature of their availability it seemed like combining the two tour EPs into one album was in order. ***After 20 years of dispensing some of the most memorable ska/punk around, touring the world like madmen, and bringing a party wherever they land, LESS THAN JAKE have cemented their status as kings of their genre. Primarily recognized for their blend of fun loving, wacky, high-energy ska/punk, LTJ are equally adept at writing socially relevant songs, and have always continued to progress musically. Never has this unique blend of song writing attributes been executed more perfectly than on their fourth studio album, Borders & Boundaries. ***BACK IN STOCK!!! Note new price. After more than a quarter century as a band, not only are NOFX not slowing things down, but they’re actually getting more aggressive. It’s like they’ve got some sort of Benjamin Button shit going on. Self Entitled is NOFX’s 12th (!!!) studio full-length, yet it feels as potent as any material they’ve ever released. Rather than drifting off into a land of forgettable and mindless rehashes of their older material like many other veteran acts, NOFX approached Self Entitled with a reinvigorated virility. The 12 tracks fully embrace the hostile early LA punk sound while maintaining just the right amount of that trademark technical and melodic sound that NOFX is renowned for. As with all NOFX albums, the subject matter on Self Entitled is diverse (politics, religion, S&M, etc.), but there is a more cohesive mood this time around. The majority of the songs display a more personal perspective from Fat Mike, which lends a more intimate feeling to the album overall. There is little question about what has separated NOFX as an enduring force in independent music, and more specifically, as an institution in the punk scene for so long. Their hallmark sound and style matched with their ability to keep things fresh is unparalleled among their peers. ***MORNING GLORY first became the spark of an idea back in 2001 when EZRA KIRE (LEFTOVER CRACK, CHOKING VICTIM, INDK) took time off from touring and started to write and record some songs in his NYC apartment. Built on the backbone of ska, punk, crust, metal, much like his other work, the songs Ezra wrote for Morning Glory served as an outlet for the expanded spectrum of his songwriting. Though, with all the other bands and endless touring, Morning Glory never evolved very far from its fledgling stages. Until now.
